In this episode, Dan and Julia discuss whether no-mow May is good for our gardens and discover the many magical properties of copper tools. Julia advises on how to look after tomato plants while waiting for the weather to warm up, and Dan highlights Calycanthus, aka Carolina allspice, an increasingly popular shrub that produces exotic-looking flowers and a culinary spice. The pros and cons of not mowing in MayPros:Reduces time spent mowingRequires no fertilisers, pesticides or watering Allows some wildflowers to bloom freelyEncourages insects, birds and mammals that like to shelter or feed in longer grassIt can look attractive and even romanticIt Increases the cooling of the surrounding air and locks up more carbon dioxide than short grassCons:It may take a while to restore the neat appearance of a lawn, depending on the weather in JuneReduces space to play and walk in a small space. It doesn't increase biodiversity long-term. It's a gesture rather than a long-term commitment. It may increase the number of weeds, especially dandelions, that appear in adjacent beds and borders. Some birds, insects and flowers prefer a habitat with shorter grass. Our conclusion - a mix of grass lengths maintained all year round is probably better than not mowing for a month. We are in the depths of winter, and whatever the weather may - or may not - have in store for us in this traditionally chilly month, Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy turn their thoughts to the year ahead. Often mistaken for a quieter season, there are plenty of winter tasks to complete and projects to initiate. Winter pruning, leaf clearing, renovations and new plantings will all be discussed (we can't promise that conversations about biscuits and lists won't also appear...). Whatever the topic, the duo hope to prime us all for the unfolding gardening seasons. We've all enjoyed those visits to gardens where we've left with bellies full of cake and an imagination full of ideas, so why not become a significant part of that hugely rewarding process? Opening your garden for charity can feel like a daunting process, but inspired by the National Garden Scheme's recent 2023 media launch, Lucy and Saul discuss the many benefits it can bring. Talking to an NGS county organiser, and overcoming any hesitancies you might have, will help raise funds for brilliant causes and give your garden a motivational focus.Twitter links:Lucy @HeadGardenerLCSaul @GardeningSaulIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Support the show

In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast which is an open garden feature, I talk to Conall O’Caoimh from Ardán Garden in Howth Co.Dublin. Its a really interesting chat about Ardán Garden and how it is a series of different gardens within the main garden. Originally the garden was broken up with hedging to provide shelter from costal winds, but this breaking up or dividing also created garden rooms which could all be planted in different styles. Conall mentioned a book that inspired himself and Nuala in designing their garden and while the book wasn't accessible during the interview because it was being used to press flowers!! The name of it as promised is "The Essential Garden Book" by Terence Conran and Dan Pearson. Nuala Doherty and Conall O’CaoimhAddress: Ardán, Windgate Road, Howth, Co. Meandering paths tempt the visitor in varied directions, each revealing another space, a different planting style and a change of mood. As you move from the house with its formal ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ herbaceous borders around the lawn, the design becomes more contemporary and the planting less formal. It includes a rock outcrop planted with alpines, water garden, vegetable garden, productive glasshouse and a small copse of trees underplanted with shade loving plants.Accessibility: includes steps and some gravel pathsEach area includes opportunities to sit and lingerThroughout the garden are spread unique ceramic sculptures hand-made by Conall in his home studio, and usually some are on sale to visitors. In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast which is an open garden feature. I talk to Jimi Blake Huntingbrook Gardens. Jimi has one of the largest and most diverse collections of plants in Ireland and the gardens did not disappoint they are fantastic from start to finish in a brilliant mix of colour, unusual foliage and distinct structural planting. We walk through the gardens and talk about the gardens and also about Jimi's online courses, and in person classes which sound really interesting.About Huntingbrook: Situated on the sunny, south-facing flanks of the Lamb Hill in the foothills of the lofty Wicklow mountains, Hunting Brook garden is the boldly idiosyncratic creation of Jimi Blake, the noted Irish horticulturist, teacher and plantsman who first came to prominence during the 1990s as the head gardener of the historic Airfield Gardens in Dundrum, Co Dublin. At the heart of this excitingly contemporary Irish garden lies Jimi’s Wicklow home, a modest timber house that he built in 2002 and where he now lives with his two friendly dogs, Doris and Billy. Not just a home, the house is also the informal headquarters and classroom for the many different gardening and health and wellbeing workshops held at Hunting Brook, as well as the highly regarded plantsperson’s courses that he runs there twice a year. Hunting Brook is one of Ireland's largest private collections of plants and surrounding his home are many examples of the fiercely colourful and theatrically beautiful, large-scale planting combinations for which Jimi has become so well known. These fill Hunting Brook’s sunny beds and steep banks and tumble down along the edges of its curling pathways. Hidden at the bottom of a secret, shady gorge that lies just west of the house is the chattering mountain stream that gives Hunting Brook its name and which runs through it like an artery, tumbling its way over granite boulders and through a tranquil woodland that Jimi has begun to clothe with an understorey of choice shade-loving plants. From here, a zigzag of rough-hewn forest paths and a simple wooden bridge lead visitors across the stream, before winding steeply upwards into a sunny hillside and a wild meadow where a solitary Bronze Age standing stone keeps watch over the watery west Wicklow landscape. You can find Huntingbrook Website: http://www.huntingbrook.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/HUNTING-BROOK-GARDENS-326862913473/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jimiblake_huntingbrookgardens/?hl=enThere will be a blog post on this episode very soon on my website. In this weeks episode of Master My Garden Podcast I am joined by Kevin Begley from Coolwater Garden. Coolwater garden is the third open garden feature on the podcast and although I haven't yet visited it sounds like a really interesting garden, unlike other open gardens it has no lawn or large herbaceous borders. Instead Coolwater features many native plants, a large pond area and a huge amount of alpine plants which have found their home in some of the 70 throughs and many containers in this garden which is open to the public all year apart from 2 weeks over Christmas/New year and is a garden I will certainly visit very soon. About Coolwater GardenA small private garden set on half an acre, which is open 12 months of the year, by prior arrangement, to groups. Distinctively different, Coolwater Garden, overlooked on either side by Skule Hill and Rockstown Castle, is designed for year round structure and shape. Its highlights contain a really cool water garden, a large number of landscaped Alpine troughs, covered Arid section, combe bordered with thyme running between two ponds, fern dell, juniper escarpment, Lewisia outcrop, Japanese Maple bed, bamboo, heath, etc, etc. Lizards, newts and frogs love the garden and have made it their home. In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast I talk to TJ Maher from Patthana Garden in Kiltegan, Co.Wicklow. This is the second open garden feature and I plan to do one every month mainly because open gardens are a source of inspiration for many gardens. Patthana does not disappoint on the inspiration front, its smaller size makes many of the elements feel like they are attainable to every gardener. From the use of pots in the lower patio area, to the beautifully colour coordinated island beds in the upper garden. Patthana is beautiful, ever changing with something new around every corner and it features in Shirley Lanigan's The 100 Best Gardens In Ireland. I chat with TJ about the garden, he gives lots of great tips and advice that gardens can use to Master Their own garden. I also talk about TJ's gardening course which is a great concept and students get to see the garden unfold over the whole growing season. We finish talking about the new garden which is being added at present and I look forward to re-visiting in the future to see this part of the garden. Patthana is an award winning small village garden set over a third of an acre and is home to T.J. Maher and Simon Kirby, in Kiltegan, County Wicklow. The garden comprises of a lower cobbled courtyard with its Potting shed and a sunken meditation room leading to the main courtyard with a small wildlife pond. Both these areas house an extensive collectionof plants from the hardy to the tender and exotic. Circular granite steps lead to the upper terrace garden with its borders of herbaceous perennials, annuals and unusual shrubs and trees carefully chosen for a small garden such as Euonymus Planipes and Cercidiphyllum Japonicum ‘Heronswood Globe’. Patthana is gardened organically with many plants chosen for their attraction to wildlife. You can find Patthana on Website https://www.patthanagardenireland.comFacebook https://www.facebook.com/Patthanagardenkiltegan/Instagram https://www.instagram.com/patthana_garden/Email patthanagarden@gmail.com Address Kiltegan, Co. Open gardens provide ideas and inspiration for many gardeners. So I have decided to add in a new feature into Master My Garden podcast where once a month I highlight an open garden. In this weeks episode of the podcast I am featuring the first of these open gardens. In a great interview with Mary Keenan from Gash Gardens, Co.Laois in the midlands Ireland. Mary tells us all about the very interesting history of Gash Gardens and describes beautifully how the garden looks today. Mary also gives many tips to help people Master their own garden. She also describes the plant sales area which doesn't sell the run of the mill plants rather focussing on quality performers from Gash Gardens. I also live in Co.Laois but hadn't heard of the gardens until recently so I'm super excited to visit over the coming weeks below is a description of the garden from Gash Gardens website.http://www.gashgardens.ieNothing outside the garden gate suggests the extent or beauty of Gash Gardens. Once inside you are greeted by an amazing oasis packed with interesting and unusual plants to lure and inspire both the keen plants person and the garden novice. Colourful herbaceous borders, a large rock garden and a well established collection of trees, shrubs, rhododendrons and deliciously perfumed old style roses combine to present a succession of colour through all the seasons. Visitors can sit inside a small rocky cavern known as the Moon House and watch gushing water cascade from above or enjoy the soothing ambience of still ponds and meandering streams. A hidden walkway leads through the fernery and on to the tranquility of a looped walk along the banks of the River Nore where nature abounds. Whether you are a keen gardener, an armchair gardener or a visitor looking for an enjoyable day out, then Gash Gardens is for you.Check in with Gash Gardens facebook page for information on opening times and regular updates on the gardenshttps://www.facebook.com/gashgardens/After I visit Gash Garden in the coming weeks I will write a blog to tell you all about my visit. He worked in the mobile communications world for approximately fifteen years where he honed his product management skills at different traditional mobile operators such as Blackberry and Sprint. During his time at Blackberry, he became unsatisfied with the manner traditional operators conducted business, which sparked a desire to try something different, something that would alter the communications business and completely disrupt the established centralized approach.

China remains the leading destination for clean energy investment as of last year as global investment continues to decline. A report in the United States says China remains the leading regional and global clean energy market, attracting over 50 billion U.S. dollars last year. The report says the worldwide investment in clean energy kept declining last year after reaching its peak in 2011. It was mainly dragged down by the curtailment of incentives in regions including Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Clean energy finance in the European region slid sharply for the second consecutive year, by over 40 percent. However, Japan, Canada and non-G20 markets witnessed quick investment growth. Japan experienced the fastest growth in the world by increasing 80 percent last year to almost 30 billion dollars. The report also found more solar than wind energy was installed globally for the first time last year. Solar will be the leading clean energy technology in both investment and capacity for the next few years. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Children's literature writers in China have been urged to produce more outstanding work and boost their presence in the global market. The call came amid International Children's Book Day which fell on April 2. April 2 is the birthday of prominent Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. It is an annual event featuring writing competitions, book fairs, awards and talks. Founded in 1967, the day is sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People, an international non-profit organization. The China Society for the Study of Children's Literature says Chinese children's literature has developed its own characteristics in recent years. Children's authors stick to the values of truth, goodness and beauty so as to help children obtain valid philosophies and life values. However, experts also pointed out that the quality of children's books varies greatly, and China needs excellent kids' books with international influence. A new mobile messaging application called FireChat is empowering nearby smartphone users to stay in touch even when there's no cellular service or Internet connection. In just two weeks since its release on the iPhone, FireChat already has already provided a flicker of hope for people pining for more effective, secure and affordable ways to communicate. That's because the free messaging app harnesses a technology called wireless mesh networking, which might one day allow a myriad of devices to connect like links in a chain. The technique might one day be used to tie together thousands of devices with built-in radios and make it possible to be online without having to pay for the access. It could also enable online communications in remote areas or disaster zones without Wi-Fi or cellular signals. Furthermore, the conversations in these so-called "off-the-grid" networks can't easily be hacked into by spies and mischief makers or shut down by governments trying to stifle free speech. Michael Benoliel, CEO of Open Garden, the maker of the FireChat app, says they are trying to create networks built by the people for the people. Open Garden, a San Francisco startup with just 10 employees, has released a FireChat app for Android phones. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The European Parliament has voted to stop Internet providers from charging for preferential access to their networks. This is a step cheered by consumer groups and startups, but bemoaned by the telecommunications industry. The bill on "net neutrality" forces Internet providers to treat all traffic the same regardless of its source. The European Commission has hailed the overwhelming vote as "historic", saying it will help to get rid of barriers and to make life less expensive for consumers. Small companies, consumer groups and online freedom activists cheered the vote. But large European telecommunications companies protested, warning of dire consequences if net neutrality is enacted in all European countries. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Turkey's government has lifted its ban on Twitter a day after the country's highest court ruled that the block was a violation of freedom and must be restored. Turkey blocked access to the social media website a few weeks ago after some users posted links suggesting government corruption. The government also blocked access to YouTube following the leak of an audio recording of a high-level security meeting. The leaks were posted on Twitter and YouTube in the run up to local elections on March 30, which gave the ruling party a decisive victory. The moves sparked international criticism and the ban was challenged in several Turkish courts. However, the high court decision was limited to Twitter. Access to YouTube remained blocked.
