HAHAHAHA!! ELAINE HAS NO MONEY!!! HAHAHAHA!! That is my impression of Jerry and George from this episode. While the main storyline of this episode involves Elaine, she gets very little substance and none of the comedy. Still, in his first episode as a Seinfeld writer, Peter Mehlman does provide a solid episode and captures that Seinfeld flavor perfectly... just wish Elaine wasn't left in the bland corner.

Peter Mehlman went from writing sports to writing Seinfeld and gave us characters and catchphrases we'll never forget. In this episode, comedian Dan Rosenberg interviews Peter about his journey from playing basketball in college to writing some of the funniest moments on one of the funniest shows ever written. After years on staff writing for Seinfeld in New York, he went moved to sunnier skies and palm trees, writing for another hit show, “It's Like, You Know," and has even written a few books in recent years. Catch up with Dan & Peter and have a few laughs along the way in today's episode: “The Catch Phrases” Born in Queens, New York. Attended the University of Maryland. Interned, then worked at The Washington Post. Wrote & produced the TV series “SportsBeat” with the great Howard Cosell. Freelance magazine writer in New York. He moved to Los Angeles in 1989, bumped into his friend Larry David. Showed him a humor piece he wrote for the New York Times. Jerry Seinfeld liked it too and yada yada yada, he gets on the show.  Peter wrote and produced Seinfeld for six year. He's best known for his classic Seinfeld-isms: “Spongeworthy,” “shrinkage,” and “double-dipping.” He joined DreamWorks in 1997 and created the TV show “It's Like, You Know…,” a scathing look at life in Los Angeles. He punched up the animated kid flick Madagascar and gets a hypochondriacal giraffe named after him. He's still writing. Screenplays, novels, op-eds, lists. He dabbles in stand-up and doodles subconsciously. He shoots hoops and lives in LA with his dog Ike. Dan Rosenberg was born in a tiny suburb of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania called Beaver Falls (more like a suburb of that suburb called Chippewa Township) and lived in the third unit of a duplex. His father was a self employed auto parts peddler that loved baseball and apple pie with cheese on it. He would often work late in his parts store trying to invent things that already existed, like the telephone or thumb tacks. His mother was a florist, an artist and a part time immigration attorney focusing on citizens of Armenia and West Virginia. He graduated in the upper 10% of the lower third of his high school class and was an active member of the "Tall Guy's That Can't Play Hoops" club as well as the Jazz Band, where he was fourteenth chair tenor tuba. Several years ago, he walked into a comedy club and his life was forever changed. “The club was also a cult and they ‘recruited' me to serve as their light bulb changer.” He's done stand-up comedy and writing ever since. he's written several spec scripts, like, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "The Office," and a killer "Too Close for Comfort." ("Monroe Gets a Job") He's also written for several radio shows as well as two books. The first "The Book on Hosting: How Not to Suck as an Emcee" and "The Book on Vacuums: The Joke Sometimes Writes Itself.” Check out Dan's comedy special on Amazon Prime.

I had a lot of fun taping this episode, which starts out with a story about technical glitches and then, as if to prove my point, is full of technical glitches. So, my apologies for any “drop outs” in this episode. However, a few dropped words aside, we did manage to have a great conversation with author and former Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman, who’s hilarious novel It Won’t Alway’s Be This Great comes out in paperback on October 5th. This book is not only as funny as you might expect, but it’s also a touching story about family, as well as an insightful glimpse into the life of a seemingly ordinary suburban podiatrist who suddenly finds himself in a life altering situation. Next up we have comedian/actor Mateen Stewart, who brings us a pillar of colonial literature, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Unfortunately, we have one of our glitches just as Mateen says the name of the book, so my apologies, but it was a great conversation about a really important book. This book, the story of a man faced with the destruction of his family and his nation by the forces of colonialism is a haunting tale, made all the more frightening by it’s connection to reality. Some real life horrors are worse than any fiction, and this book is both a great novel as well as a great testament to the truth of colonialism. The horrors in our next book, brought to us by our returning favorite, Hannah Gansen, are of the freak show variety, as we discuss the very popular Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. This is a book that comes up over and over it seems, people keep recommending it to me, and they seem to have a deep connection to this twisted tale about a family of freaks. And I suppose that’s what this show’s all about, getting a good recommendation for something you might not otherwise read, and so after my talk with Hannah, I’m looking forward to diving into this one! All in all, another fun episode! I hope you enjoy! Steve Cooper talks with writer Peter Mehlman. Peter's first job out of college was as a writer for the Washington Post. He slid to television in 1982, writing for SportsBeat with Howard Cosell. From 1985-90, he returned to forming full sentences as a writer for numerous national publications including The New York Times Magazine, GQ, Esquire, and a multitude of women’s magazines. In 1989, he moved to Los Angeles, where he bumped into Larry David, whom he’d met twice in New York. David, developing Seinfeld, invited him to submit a sample script. Having never written one, Mehlman sent a humor piece he’d written for the Times Magazine and got an assignment, which became the first Seinfeld freelance episode, The Apartment. Over the eight-year run of the show, he rose to executive producer and coined such Seinfeld-isms as Yada Yada, spongeworthy, shrinkage and double-dipping. In 1997, he joined DreamWorks and created It’s like, you know… a scathing look at Los Angeles. In recent years, he has written screenplays, a novel, and humor pieces for NPR, Esquire, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times, several of which were published in his collection, Mandela Was Late. In addition, he has also appeared on-camera for TNT Sports and the Webby-nominated Peter Mehlman’s Narrow World of Sports, while also starring in his short film BLANK, for which he won best writing at the Los Angeles Comedy Festival.

Peter Mehlman, former writer for Seinfeld and author of Mandela Was Late, is the guest on this week’s episode of The Mike & Judy Show. Mike Edison and Judy McGuire sit down with Peter to talk about getting his foot in the door with Larry David, and how dramatic writing differs from composing essays and journalistic pieces. Find out why Peter likes Los Angeles, and why Mike hates it. What memorable Seinfeld quotes did Peter coin? Hear how Peter feels about Lena Dunham’s Girls, and whether not Seinfeld is a Jewish comedy or not. This program has been sponsored by Roberta’s. “I think the average person is closer to a celebrity more than ever because everyone needs so much attention. There’s so much attention-seeking from the most anonymous people, that the gap is closing.” [6:20] — Peter Mehlman on The Mike & Judy Show

In their 2nd official comedy writers roundtable, @theNuzzy & @theguydf welcome to the show a couple of the creative minds behind 2 of the funniest shows ever... Seinfeld and Modern Family! Yes, Seinfeld's very own Peter Mehlman returns for his 2nd stint on DecentlyFunny.com and does not disappoint... And new comer to the show, the brilliant and hilariously funny Emmy Award winning Modern Family writer, Danny Zuker leaves the roundtable in stitches. We learn a lot about comedy writing, for example comedy writers don't want to read your scripts because you're not funny... also comedy writers don't just write for one character, they write for them all... only an idiot would think that. A few questions you will enjoy the answers to... Which Howard Stern Show staffer was Danny Zuker's roommate for a while? Which actress/reality star does Nuzzy issue an apology to? What is Peter Mehlman's next project? ...and maybe most importantly, how do you pronounce poinsettia? So listen to Nuzzy, Guy, Mehlman and Zuker... a real Podern Family!
