Robertson is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Direction of Innovation in Surgical Innovation in the Department of Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She drives efforts within the surgery department to develop curricula and assessments to support medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. Additionally, she serves on the leadership of multiple teaching and clinical research courses within the Harvard Medical School's Postgraduate Medical Education portfolio. Sleep deprivation in medicine is part of the deal, but why is it? Dr. Laura Vater shares her experiences and the experiences of others that have dealt with the grueling reality of sleep deprivation and working within a culture that rewards sleep deprived residents and trainees. She discusses the dangers she has personally faced, the mental health struggles associated with sleep deprivation, and what it will take to create a healthier system that promotes the health and well-being of practitioners. Laura Vater, MD, MPH is a Hematology Oncology Fellow at Indiana University. Throughout her career, Laura has remained interested in preventive health, humanism in medicine, and promotion of clinician health. In 2017, she developed a tool to help patients and clinicians simplify and prioritize health (the SMILE Scale). This tool is being used in schools and clinics in the US and UK. ​Laura earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Indiana University. Dr. Deyana Lewis' academic career began at the University of Illinois where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Planning and Administration. After leaving the University of Illinois, she worked at Washington University’s McDonnell Genome Institute where her analytical and computation skills played an integral part in mapping the Human Genome Project. She then continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she received a Masters in Public Health Genetics as well as a PhD in Human Genetics. Dr. Lewis is the first African American woman to graduate with a Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health in Human Genetics with a specialization in Statistical Genetics. Currently, Dr. Deyana Lewis is serving as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Computational and Statistical Genomics Research Institute. She has a passion for investigating the genetic mechanisms underlying diseases that disproportionately affect African Americans in comparison to other races/ethnicities . Dr. Laura Gieraltowski leads the Foodborne Outbreak Response Team in the Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA. She leads the team that helps coordinate the national network of epidemiologists and other public health officials who investigate outbreaks of foodborne and other enteric illnesses. ​Laura is a graduate of CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service Program. She received a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and has a Masters of Public Health degree in behavioral health sciences from Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. She has worked at the CDC since 2009 and has been involved in numerous multistate outbreak investigations leading to the identification and recall of food products. Rev. Francene Young, Christian Tradition Wednesday, December 5, 2018 For the month of December, the Rothko Chapel presented a contemplative practice on the topic of "Justice," led by Rev. Francene Young of St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church. Rev. Young led participants in reflections on passages related to the theme of justice from three different interpretations of the Bible, while providing prayers for families on the border. About the presenter: The Rev. Francene Young is the current Transition Minister for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and the Vicar at St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church. While working as a Vice President in Human Resources for a global energy company, she attended the Episcopal Diocese of Texas Iona School for Ministry. After successfully completing the three-year program, Francene was ordained a Transitional Deacon in 2011 and a Priest in January 2012. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, she attended the Baptist church until being introduced to the Episcopal Church at age seventeen. After participating in a citywide Episcopal youth group in the Diocese of Ohio, Francene and her five younger siblings were confirmed in the Episcopal Church. When she was a junior in college, she led a parish on Cleveland's near west side during their transition between vicars. In the church, she has served as Senior Warden, Treasurer, Head of Lay Ministries, Verger, Christian Formation instructor, and Lay Eucharistic Minister. Francene has a master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and an undergraduate in Social Services from Cleveland State University. About the series: Since September 2005, on the first Wednesday of each month at 12pm, the Rothko Chapel hosts a contemplative practice focusing on different spiritual or faith traditions featuring teachers and religious leaders from throughout the greater Houston community. Dr. Nelson holds a PhD and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and specializes in the field of science, technology, and society. She has recently finished serving as a co-principal investigator on a National Science Foundation grant to explore the societal perceptions of biometric technology in collaboration with Bojan Cukic, PhD (WVU); Stephanie Schuckers, PhD (Clarkson); Michael Schuckers, PhD (St. Lawrence University); Anil Jain, PhD (Michigan State); and Larry Hornack, PhD (WVU). This research has be published in America Identified: Biometric Technology and Society (MIT, 2010). She has also written several articles in journals including I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society, Public Administration Review, and the University of Chicago Policy Review. Dr. Akira Sekikawa, assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, discusses with host Dr. Larry Kaskel the results of his recent study showing how fish consumption may protect against heart disease. They explore the benefits of fish oil, and the unique attributes of this study compared to other studies examining the relationship between fish intake and heart disease.
