Gary Webb was an investigative journalist whose 1996 "Dark Alliance" series exposed the connection between the CIA, Nicaraguan Contras, and the crack cocaine epidemic in the U.S.. Published in the San Jose Mercury News, Webb's reporting detailed how CIA-backed Contra rebels smuggled cocaine into the U.S. during the 1980s, which was then funneled into Los Angeles' crack cocaine trade—devastating Black communities. Stubborn, determined and tenancious, Gary Webb was the quintessential investigative journalist. In his work for a newspaper called The Mercury News, Gary explored the relationship between right-wing revolutionary Contras in Nicaragua, the crack cocaine epidemic in the United States, and the actions of the Central Intelligence Agency. While the series was published, multiple mainstream newspapers joined together to write editorials criticizing him, and ultimately his own editors turned on him, as well. Gary Webb later died from two gunshots to the head. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th study session on James B. Stewart's Blind Eye: The Terrifying Story of a Doctor Who Got Away with Murder. Stewart is an awarding journalist, attorney, and celebrated true crime author. He nabbed a Pulitzer Prize for his work on "insider trading" and stock market malfeasance during the 1980's. Stewart also hoisted an Edgar Award for his 1999 book investigating the "smooth, good looking" but deadly Michael Swango. This White serial killer is caged at a Colorado supermax penitentiary and is suspected of having killed approximately 60 people - although no one truly knows how many lives Swango extinguished. Last week, we heard about a troth of evidence suggesting powerful White medical workers wield extraordinary influence over White lawmakers. This impacts the price of medications and how much citizens/patients know about healthcare workers. This provides nearly impenetrable protection for the surprisingly large number of unscrupulous or criminal White doctors. Stewart cites the work of former Plain Dealer reporter Gary Webb. This is the deceased White journalist who exposed the CIA for peddling crack to black people in the US - a number of White doctors were also stealing prescription medication. Even after serving more than two years in prison and being convicted of felony battery, Swango was able to forge government documents and smooth talk his way to the University of South Dakota's medical school program. The prison-industrial complex (PIC) is a term, coined after the "military-industrial complex" of the 1950s, used by scholars and activists to describe the relationship between a government and the various businesses that benefit from institutions of incarceration (such as prisons, jails, detention facilities, and psychiatric hospitals). The term is most often used in the context of the contemporary United States, where the rapid expansion of the U.S. inmate population has resulted in political influence and economic profits for private prison companies and other businesses that supply goods and services to government prison agencies. We have a dandy doozy of an ep for ya this week friends, a real ripsnorting pistol whipper. We got a zany audio tidbit, believe that. Also included are two original altered states of consciousness-casts,  the first of their kind on the BNP - but certainly not the last.  Someone who isn't me gets a hoot out of recording content from a seat in their pineal gland. The meat n potatoes of this week's ep weaves a sordid tale of rampant government corruption, cover-ups at the highest echelons of power, and rogue intelligence agencies. We hear from investigative journalist Gary Webb, who sacrificed his career (and eventually his life) in order to paint a detailed portrait of how the CIA and assorted other 3 letter agencies worked intimately alongside Colombian drug cartels, Nicaraguan right-wing para-militiamen, and inner city dope dealers in order to flood U.S. urban centers (starting in E. L.A., then fanning out from there) with cheap cocaine. This cheap blow could then be cut into crack, making a high price drug suddenly affordable in low income neighborhoods. This highly addictive and socially destructive substance blossomed forth an entirely new drug market. The result was a public health apocalypse, with crack cocaine causing generationally devastating effects throughout urban America and filling the prisons with young black men, who because of racist sentencing legislation were put away for twice as long as their richer, white-collar counterparts selling powdered cocaine uptown. Gary Webb's 1996 expose was entitled Dark Alliance, and it ran in the San Jose Mercury. It's now quite difficult to find online, however currently you can access it here.  Download while you can.
