Best known as the ‘doctor who cured himself’ ('Doctor Cure Thyself,' NY Times), Fajgenbaum went from being a beast-like college quarterback to receiving his last rites while in medical school and nearly dying four more times battling Castleman disease, a deadly cytokine storm disorder. This approach is saving his life (https://nyti.ms/2kzaTet) and other patients' lives too (https://youtu.be/xeA1rbkhtZE). Now, he is spreading this approach to other diseases ('His method could save millions,' CNN) like COVID-19 and sharing lessons he learned about living from nearly dying through "Chasing My Cure," which has been translated into five languages and named one of the “Best Non-Fiction Books of 2019” by Next Big Ideas Club. In this episode we discuss: David’s journey with Idiopathic Multicentric Castleman’s Disease, a very rare disease that almost cost him his life, and how after exhausting all treatment options he started researching potential solutions for patients with his disease. Whitney Catalano is a Registered Dietitian specializing in intuitive eating for driven and passionate women who are ready to reclaim their life by breaking up with dieting. She adopts an anti-diet view and stresses connecting with your body’s food preferences, hunger and fullness cues, and finding a weight that is effortless for your body. In this episode we discuss: How social trends around body image set us up for a bad relationship with food, how these things can be passed down from parents to kids. Kids are sponges, and if they see their parents engaging with food in a negative way they will likely develop the same negative food mindsets. The restriction vs binging pendulum. If you are struggling with binge eating , it may be because you tried to over restricted yourself in the past and vice versa. Body size is not necessarily an indicator of self control or laziness. Biases todays body size and how bigger people are shamed from multiple different areas of life , most notably healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, etc) The inner bully - being a bully to yourself / shaming yourself when you make a bad food decision, the importance of recognizing these thoughts exist, and not always taking them as gospel. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Katie Duke left in her mid 20’s to pursue a feeling inside her that there was “something greater out there”, and that feeling led her to New York City. Ms Duke has 15 years experience in Nursing, with the last 4 years spent working as a Board Certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specializing in Inpatient Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in New York City at one of the Nation’s top hospitals, Mount Sinai Hospital. In addition to her full time career as an NP, she also serves as a clinical preceptor to NYU ACNP graduate students, editorial contributor, motivational speaker, mentor, agency represented social media influencer, hosts the “Bad Decisions Podcast”, and is the founder of the “Duke It Up Event” which is an empowerment and mentoring workshop. For the last 6 years she has been dedicated to leading others by sharing her good and bad experiences and lessons, and empowering others to embrace and grow from their not so glorious moments. In this episode, we discuss: - Katie’s story about when she was fired for “trying to do too much” and/or an “insensitive” social media post, how it affected her and fueled her to expose a punitive culture for nurses, and to help others in similar situations - Katie’s entrepreneurial journey with her online brand and message for those that don't have it all together (because no one really does) - Her advice for HCPs who want to utilize social media to share their story: Know your hospital’s social media policy, be authentically you, be ok with the ups and downs, and don't feel like you need to conform to what’s popular or trending. Stephanie Essenfeld has been dedicated to the study and practice of family psychology and therapy for the past eight years. She loves working in collaboration with her clients and helps them take advantage of their strengths to solve their problems. She focuses in effective communication, empathy, rebuilding self-esteem, boundaries, decision making, overcoming traumas, and mindfulness, in order to be able to form and maintain healthy relationships with others and most importantly, with themselves. She uses her instagram account @therapyuntangled to offer tools for personal growth, facilitate psychoeducation, and encourage self-reflection in those who do not have access to therapy or who want to use her content as a supplement to their own therapy. In this episode we discuss: Radical acceptance - Accepting that pain is part of life and rejecting pain can hurt you the same as genuine suffering. Reject the idea that if we're feeling pain then we can not be OK at the same time, or that we're not supposed to be sad or angry when things don’t go well. Accepting pain of any kind, big or small, with all your being , is the key to moving forward. You can still be happy with pain in your life. Open yourself up to rejection because it has nothing to do with your worth as a person. Treat it as feedback that tells you what you can do differently to succeed in the future. To move forward we have to accept the events of our past , the events of our present, that everything has a cause, and also that we have limitations in the future. Life can be worth living even with painful events in it. To stop self sabotage ask "What’s the best that can happen?" not "What’s the worst that can happen." Also, recognize the self fulfilling traits of labels others have placed on you. Understand that these labels come with a certain set of characteristics that don’t have to define you if you don't let them. Interpersonal effectiveness skills - There are 4 types of communication: Aggressive, Passive, Passive-Aggressive, and Assertive which is the most effective.
