Tamara Fowler has dedicated her career to babies, children, and their families. As Founder and CEO of Wiggle Giggle Playtorium, this indoor playground and event venue is just the latest of her pursuits to help children develop, and to support their families. With Bachelor's degrees in Biology and Nursing, and a Master's in Secondary Education, Tamara has done everything from teaching high school Chemistry and Physics, to Nursing in Labor and Delivery, and Fertility and Family Planning. As a wife and mom to a 3 year old, when she created Wiggle Giggle, Tamara did so with a vision of kids learning, growing, and playing all day, and parents in Marietta, Georgia having a safe place for their children to explore. Raised in Roswell, Georgia, Tamara was a student athlete in high school and attended Spring Hill College on a basketball scholarship. She also coached various sports when she taught at Stone Mountain High School, and was a leader for Black Girls Run in its early days. Thus, she knows first hand that children learn more than techniques of a game and use of motor skills through play. They're being exposed to community building, networking, empowerment, and mutual support in the time they spend interacting with newfound friends. Moreover, parents benefit from the same thing. While their kids imagine-up big adventures, they're exchanging stories and tips, and finding people who understand their lived experiences as parents. When Tamara and her partner returned to Georgia with an almost 2 year old, after spending 7 years away, living in California, Virginia, and then Maryland respectively during that time, these were the things they sought out. They would drive for miles, exploring places where their daughter could practice using her courage and social skills, and parents could engage in dialogue with one another, which meant they spent a lot of time commuting with a toddler. With Wiggle Giggle as the only indoor playground within a 10 mile radius, Tamara recognized and seized the opportunity to fill this need other parents in her immediate area seemed to share. With party bookings taking place before Wiggle Giggle's doors were opened by neighbors and classmates from their daughter's school, attendance of over 400 people at the facility's grand opening, a collaborative partnership with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, private event reservations from her Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. members, local public figures, and more, Wiggle Giggle has received an outpouring of support, the Fowler family is overwhelmed with gratitude for being embraced by the community.Riverside.fm A platform for podcast interviewingBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Back in the day, if you watched any television, it was hard to avoid Ronald McDonald and his McDonaldland friends. Every time you turned the channel, you'd see Mayor McCheese, Grimace, and the Hamburglar. But most of them disappeared years ago. You might see them on a Happy Meal box or in the Play Place, but they haven't been on TV in years. But that's about the change, as the Hamburglar will soon make a return... On today's Awkward Moment, we talk with a dad who had to deal with a lot of angry parents because of a dirty diaper and a slide.
It's nearly March 2022, which means it's time for the last episode recorded in 2021, and it's one that starts pretty real and raw before pivoting into cookie shoptalk and the usual nonsense. Brendan Mulligan (Nike Tees Graphics and @coolkidbrendan) joins Sean to talk about what they want on their Tombstones, sneeze guards, and the nightmarish realm that is the McDonald's Play Place. What even is design? We're just talking about specific pastry vendors at the Portland State University Saturday farmers market. Serenity now! You can find Brendan at @coolkidbrendan on many platforms! You can find more about his work at coolkidbrendan.com! You can find Did I Do That? on your podcatcher of choice, or through our website, dididothat.design! You can also follow on both Instagram (@schuseanmacher) and Twitter (@designbycmte)! Yes, I do know this is a confusing, bad way to do things! If you enjoyed this show, despite the large body of evidence against such a thing being possible, why not share the misplaced love? Write us a review on your podcasting service or share it with a friend! These things help a new show out bunches, and this thing needs all the help it can get.

Dog parks have really become a big deal. They are used daily by hundreds of families with dogs. They romp, run, play and wrestle. Sometimes, they just hang out. It often reminds me of McDonald's Play Place. Throw a bunch of random kids together and they're bound to hit it off, right? As a child, it was my favourite restaurant to eat in. A Kid's Meal with a toy and a place to play with bouncy horses, ball pits, Merry-Go-Rounds, and slides. McDonalds knew that if they built it, the kids would come - and the kids would bring their family! It was brilliant marketing on their part. The kids, after all, are typically the ones who get to choose where. The parents were happy because after eating, they got to chat while the kids played in the little windowed cell - safe and contained. What kid wouldn't love it at the Play Place? Well, there are some. The ones who get bullied by other kids. The ones who get hurt. As a kid, I remember an incident where I was pushed from behind by a child on the slide. I didn't know him. I wasn't sure if he was impatient and I was taking too long or if he truly was looking to bully me. All I know is I ended up with a goose egg on my head and a fat lip where I bit down hard. My mom came running in to help me and after attending to my immediate needs, she turned to find both child and parent had vanished. They were nowhere to be seen. That was early on in the days when McDonalds first realized that marketing to children was beneficial. We saw exciting colours and fun and wanted to be part of it! We didn't have access to the information we do now. We made decisions based on different factors back then - the Play Place seemed safe and magical! Fast forward to today and the accessibility of details at your fingertips. Google "Play Place Accidents". I got almost 5 million results in less than one second! Now, I'm quite certain that not all 5 million results are horrific incidents, but likely, a few of them are. Now Google "Dog Park Accidents".McDonald's Not quite as big a list at 1.5 million, but still a lot of incidents includiing Spectator articles about dogs being killed. We don't recommend the traditional use of Dog Parks. With the lack of structure and complete anonymity, it can be a powder keg just waiting for a spark. With the stories that we are privy to, we know that it's not worth the risk. None of our staff would ever go to one. Check with any vet and I'm quite certain that they've all seen tremendous injury as a result of Leash-Free Dog Parks as well. So, the question is, are you willing to take the risk? There are, of course, a balance of facts. Probably most days go by without incident at the Dog Park. With a little planning and some rules to follow, it can be a fun experience. So, how do you decide if the risk is worth it? I would break it down to the points we talk about in this episode. Host Romy Gingras talked with Shell Jones, who is President and CEO of this facility located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Jones shared what inspired the idea for Play-Place and her goals for the future. The facility is meant to be a safe place where children and their parents are free to play, relax, and relate to those who understand the challenges of living with and raising a child on the Autism spectrum. Romy gained an understanding about the various revenue streams this social enterprise is developing, and the services they provide. Shell Jones says she looked for a place that would encourage social involvement of her son who is on the Autism Spectrum near where she lives. But, she came to the realization that the teaching by play concept place that she desired wasn’t available. So, she set out to create a special place that caters not only to the kids, but also to all members of their families. Bonfires host Romy Gingras explores the commercial and union enterprises, teachers and social scients who are donating time, treasure and talent to build The Play-Place for Autistic Children.
