Cullen Roche, CIO of Discipline Funds and author of Pragmatic Capitalism, returns to The Julia La Roche Show for episode 123. Going into 2023, Cullen's big call was disinflation, which was a largely correct call. In this episode, Cullen shares his views that it might take a full year for the Federal Reserve to hit the 2% target. Because of that, the Fed can't start signaling rate cuts without risking a resurgence in inflation. Therefore, Cullen believes the Fed will remain tighter well into 2024, increasing the risk of a hard landing or credit event as we get deeper into 2024. This week, one of Dan's favorite guests returns for his fourth Stansberry Investor Hour appearance... Cullen Roche is the founder of portfolio-management firms Orcam Financial and Discipline Funds. He is also the author of two of the most widely circulated research papers in finance and a highly rated book named after his popular financial blog, Pragmatic Capitalism. But first, Dan and Corey examine the biggest news events of the past week. And some have gotten a little too close for comfort to the extreme scenarios in the "Top 10 Potential Surprises for 2023" episode. As for our guest's economic outlook, Cullen discusses why disinflation could be this year's theme... why it's too early to be picking bottoms in the "huge, slow-moving beast" of housing... and why he thinks the Federal Reserve is likely to hike rates a bit more before adopting a wait-and-see approach... ➡️ Watch Here

Cullen Roche, CIO of Discipline Funds and author of Pragmatic Capitalism, joins Julia La Roche on episode 50 for a wide-ranging discussion of the macro environment and Housing — the risk keeping him up at night. In this episode, Roche raises the point that when it comes to macro research, many economists argue that the U.S. economy is a housing economy, meaning when the housing market slows down a lot, it filters through everything else. “It's really up in the air… Does this environment look more like a 2008-type of slowdown? Is it more like a 2002-ish type of long drawn-out slowdown that nothing really crashes, but things persistently adjust lower?” Roche said on the show. Roche is in more of the 2002 scenario camp, but he notes there's still an outlier risk of a credit event lurking that's more akin to a 2008-style event, but that's a big outlier. In this episode, Doug and Greg talk with Cullen Roche, Founder and Chief Investment Officer at Discipline Funds. Aside from advocating for rebalancing portfolios with low-fee, tax-efficient funds, Cullen also writes about the macroeconomy and investing strategies through his blog, Pragmatic Capitalism. Cullen also advises on the overall impact of inflation in the current market. Cullen talks with Doug and Greg about inflation, economic cycles, and countercyclical indexing with ETFs. Key Takeaways [00:47] - What causes inflation? [03:02] - How COVID impacted the direction of inflation. [07:08] - Bank reserves vs. direct payments to individuals. [09:40] - Has the inflation already peaked? [13:35] - Are inflation and inflation rates correlated? [20:16] - Hyperproductivity in the US economy. [23:31] - How inflation negatively impacts everybody. [26:40] - The midterm elections and market predictions. [34:06] - Cullen's insights on portfolio allocation. [39:25] - Is global market investing a good idea? [44:12] - What is Discipline Funds ETF? [50:11] - How is Disciplines Fund ETF designed to last long term? Quotes [20:20] - “The thing about deflation is it tends to occur, especially the really traumatic ones, inside of debt bubbles like the housing crisis. The thing that made that so frightening was that you had balance sheets collapsing from debt deflation, and that is really traumatic because it's the exact opposite of money printing — it's money destruction. And that is a very unnatural process inside of any long-term economic period.” - @cullenroche [38:52] - “A lot of people get in trouble because they get overly confident about potential outcomes and they start saying, ‘Oh, well, hyperinflation is coming, the government's ruining everything, so I need to just own nothing but Bitcoin.' And those sorts of maximalist positions can be really damaging because if you're wrong, your outcome is asymmetric in a really potentially catastrophic way.” - @cullenroche [41:59] - “I'm not just an advocate of diversifying globally. I'm actually an advocate of diversifying globally based on what the actual full market capitalization is.” - @cullenroche Links Cullen Roche on Twitter Cullen Roche on LinkedIn Orcam Financial Group, LLC Pragmatic Capitalism Discipline Funds Everything You Need To Know About Inflation by Cullen Roche Further Evidence on Greenspan's Conundrum Joe Manchin John Bogle Tesla Vanguard ETFs S&P 500 Connect with our hosts Doug Stokes Greg Stokes Stokes Family Office Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts LagniappePodcast.com Disclosure The information in this podcast is educational and general in nature and does not take into consideration the listener's personal circumstances. Location: New York Date: Saturday 5th December Project/company: Pragmatic Capitalism, Orcam Financial Group Role: Chief Investment Officer In the 1980's, Harry Browne devised an investment strategy designed to perform well in all economic conditions. It is referred to as the Permanent Portfolio. Investments are equally allocated to stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. The objective is for the portfolio to perform well in all economic conditions. But Harry Browne's strategy was developed in a period when short term boom and bust debt cycles were still a feature of economic systems. Since the global financial crisis of 2007, the debt cycle hasn't been allowed to function properly: recessions have been mitigated through unprecedented governmental monetary and fiscal stimulus programmes. In this new paradigm, where inflationary pressures cast a large shadow, what are the best investment strategies to take? Certain Bitcoiners are all in on the new form of money designed for these times. This does not fit everyone's risk appetite. But, having a portfolio that lacks exposure to Bitcoin risks missing out in a market that could otherwise be devoid of alpha. Then there is also a geographical variable at play: the US has certain inherent strengths that are not available to citizens of other countries, significantly affecting investment decisions. In this interview, I talk to investment strategist and founder of the educational website Pragmatic Capitalism, Cullen Roche. We discuss the drivers for inflation, the role of government, investment strategies during uncertain times, and the place for Bitcoin in asset portfolios.

Inflation is probably the most talked about topic in investing today. Some think it has become a major problem. Others (including the Fed) think it is transitory. While still others think we are headed for a repeat of the 1970s or even hyperinflation. But many of the opinions on both side are not informed by the facts. So we wanted to do an episode where we started with the basics to help us understand what is going on now, and what might happen in the future. To do that, we couldn't think of a better person to talk to than Discipline Funds founder and author of the Pragmatic Capitalism blog Cullen Roche. We look at inflation from the ground up. We discuss: - the various ways to measure it and how they are different - the history of inflation in the US - why quantitative easing didn't cause inflation, but fiscal stimulus did - the major forces that have kept inflation down - the differences between now and the 1970s - what hyperinflation is and why it is very unlikely We hope you enjoy the discussion. With so many moving parts, it’s difficult to develop a clear view of the US monetary system. Today we speak with Pragmatic Capitalism author and Founder of Orcam Financial Group Cullen Roche, leveraging his expertise to build a comprehensive understanding of the monetary system. We open our interview with Cullen by asking him the deceptively simple question, “what is money?” We then explore where money comes from, the role of the central bank in securing our money supply, and why poor capitalization restrains banks. After discussing where the value of money derives from, Cullen shares his insights on how decentralized digital currencies are challenged by their lack of flexibility and credit options. We talk more about the role of central banks before diving into quantitative easing; what it is, why it’s used, and how interest rates impact its usage. Following this, Cullen unpacks whether quantitative easing leads to asset inflation along with the influence that stimulus policies have on inflation. Reflecting on the relationship between the Federal Reserve and US Treasury, Cullen shows why the US government is in no danger of becoming insolvent. We touch on the dollar’s purchasing power, Cullen’s view that time really is money, the role of gold in your portfolio, and why Cullen is such a big proponent of global investing. We wrap up our informative discussion by asking Cullen how he defines success in his life. Tune in to benefit from Cullen’s clever and concise explanation of our modern economic system. “This is going to be life and death for many advisors. Legacy firms with massive overhead and fixed high fee AUM structures will struggle to compete with the coming change in fee structures. Firms that are able to move to a leaner and more tech based platform will outperform as they make up for lost revenue with fatter margins.”Cullen Roche who blogs at Pragmatic Capitalism has been a mainstay of the financial blogsophere for over ten years now. Michael Covel speaks with Cullen Roche. Roche is the founder of Orcam Financial Group, a financial services company based out of San Diego. He also runs a very well-known blog called Pragmatic Capitalism (pragcap.com). His new book, Pragmatic Capitalism, was just released. Roche takes apart the soundbites of the media and gets at how things really work. Covel and Roche talk about entrepreneurism; investing in yourself; the advantages of starting a blog; why the word “pragmatic” is a word that has become central to Roche’s universe; eliminating your biases; why the US going bankrupt is a myth; the myth that central banks exist to enrich bankers; Dr. Laurie Santos and her work with monkeys; bringing risk down to something we can measure; Warren Buffett; and hedging your bets. Michael Covel talks about "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. Covel defends studying the book as a psychological manifesto for "navigating the trend following waters". Halfway through the book Covel realized how it sounded like all the trend following traders he's studied over the past fifteen years (even if it wasn't the author's intention). Covel isn't out to get you to start singing kumbaya and burning incense; he's just out to get you to look at the world differently so you can profit. Covel discusses Cullen Roche, author of the "Pragmatic Capitalism" blog, who posted some quotes from Warren Buffet recently. Covel acknowledges that Buffett is one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the history of modern man, but has no problem criticizing the myths that surround him. Buffett noted that Berkshire has $40 billion in cash on hand, but "prices are difficult right now". So, what does that even mean? Why is Buffett on CNBC? He's talking his "book", he's creating the aura, and perhaps confusing people into making decisions based off his advice. Or perhaps he simply needs his ego stroked. So, what do you buy based on that advice? How do you make buy and sell decisions? Trend following doesn't rely on vague statements, and the positive performance dates back to 1903. With trend following price is price. That is an under the radar concept though. Most people simply know Buffett's value investing, buy and hold world. However, there are inherent problems in value investing and Covel investigates by quoting David Rosenberg and John Hussman along the way. From their fundamental perspective Rosenberg and Hussman lay the foundation for trend following without thst being their intention. Covel also goes on to discuss "Finding Peace with Uncertainty" from the Zen Habits blog and announces a new $500 gun shooting video contest.
