Ever wonder why markets seem to overreact to news we all saw coming? Cullen Roche challenges conventional wisdom about market efficiency with a refreshing perspective: "The price is always wrong." This fundamental insight transforms how we should approach investing during uncertain times. When tariffs send markets plunging, investors face the classic struggle between what they intellectually know they should do versus what feels right in the moment. Roche expertly dissects why traditional risk profiling fails most investors—everyone knows the "correct" answers on questionnaires, but real-world market volatility triggers emotional responses that make seemingly irrational decisions feel completely logical. As uncertainty surges during market corrections, even legendary investors can get caught in this psychological trap. The conversation introduces a powerful framework called "defined duration investing," which quantifies investment time horizons to match appropriate assets with specific financial needs. The stock market, fundamentally a 17-year instrument, cannot be forced to behave like a money market fund without consequences. This misalignment explains why many investors struggle behaviorally with market volatility—they're trying to "turn water into wine" by expecting short-term stability from inherently long-term assets.Particularly enlightening is Roche's analysis of treasuries as "deflation insurance" and his critique of popular income strategies. The discussion on dividend stocks versus total return challenges mental accounting habits that separate yield from capital appreciation, while his examination of monetary policy reveals how interventionist approaches can create unintended consequences.Whether you're navigating current market turbulence or building a portfolio for the long term, this conversation provides critical insights into aligning your investment approach with both market realities and your own psychology. Cullen Roche says that markets are losing sight of the fact that things were “already dicey” economically even before tariffs. He calls the next 12-18 months “pretty worrisome.” He doesn't think consumers are “strong enough to bear the brunt” of this. He thinks Powell will be extra cautious going forward because it will be uncertain whether tariffs are a one-time price increase or inflationary. He also doesn't expect big companies to reshore manufacturing, but just to wait out the election cycle.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Tilson notes that fundamentals are strong and the U.S. has the best-performing economy in the world, so investors have correctly priced stocks at rich levels; while that makes it harder for Tilson — a value investor — to find great companies that the market has knocked down or mispriced, it doesn't make the market scary or mean that a big downturn is building.   Do you believe the U.S. government is going bankrupt? It's becoming more of a common question as our national debt levels have ballooned to epic proportions.  It might even conjure up emotions of fear if you listen to mainstream media sources. However, if we go beyond the headlines, we will find that the U.S. is not going bankrupt, and we should likely be thankful for the wealth we have created in part from our increase in national debt. I call on my friend and economic expert Cullen Roche's writing to help us see that America's fiscal health is far from critical.  Why the government, with its monetary might and 'printing press' capability as seen during the COVID crisis, cannot go bankrupt like a typical household. CFRA's Stovall: Market will 'surprise' investors for the rest of this year

Sam Stovall, chief market strategist for CFRA Research, says that he expects the stock market to surprise investors in 2024 "the way it did in 2023," producing the kind of double-digit gains that are typical of the second year of a bull market. Once the market gets into the third year of the current bull run -- in 2025, after the presidential election -- he expects a turn because "that's when bull markets tend to die an early death." Stovall notes that while he thinks the market could take a pause or minor correction before resuming its climb, he expects leadership to change from large caps -- which he says are trading at a 30 percent premium to the Standard & Poor's 500 average price/earnings ratio over the last 20 years -- to small and mid-cap stocks, which have been trading at a steep discount. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, picks a specialized sector play -- the VictoryShares WestEnd U.S. Sector fund -- as his ETF of the Week, and Cullen Roche, chief investment officer at the Discipline Funds, talks exchange-traded funds in the Market Call.

The U.S. national debt recently crossed $34 trillion. Without causing some serious pain, paying off this debt is nearly impossible to do. We would have to dramatically cut spending in some VERY important areas, increase taxes, or both. This debacle has led many to label this situation as catastrophic... ...as a "building that we're stuck in that will need to collapse on us before we can leave." But is it really as bad as some make it out to be? Is $34 trillion of debt truly an issue?  Should we really be focused on paying down (or paying off) this debt?  To help answer these questions and shed light on this complex topic, I'm joined today by Cullen Roche, monetary economic expert and CIO of Discipline Funds. ----- WANT MORE RETIREMENT PLANNING TIPS? In this episode, Cullen shares his views that it might take a full year for the Federal Reserve to hit the 2% target. Cullen Roche, CIO of Discipline Funds and author of Pragmatic Capitalism, joins Julia La Roche on episode 50 for a wide-ranging discussion of the macro environment and Housing — the risk keeping him up at night. In this episode, Roche raises the point that when it comes to macro research, many economists argue that the U.S. economy is a housing economy, meaning when the housing market slows down a lot, it filters through everything else. “It's really up in the air… Does this environment look more like a 2008-type of slowdown? Is it more like a 2002-ish type of long drawn-out slowdown that nothing really crashes, but things persistently adjust lower?” Roche said on the show. Roche is in more of the 2002 scenario camp, but he notes there's still an outlier risk of a credit event lurking that's more akin to a 2008-style event, but that's a big outlier. Am I providing my family with the best possible life I can?  That was the question that Cullen Roche, an accomplished author, writer, and expert in global macroeconomics, behavioral finance, and monetary theory, brought to our attention during our conversation. We also discussed the topic of inflation, what it is, how to understand it, and where it is going.  Do you ever wonder why the US government is not bankrupt because of the national debt?  It's because the US government is not your average household, and we talk about why that is too.  Cullen and I also discuss the critical aspects that a wealth advisor provides, which do not involve stereotypical investment management.  There is nothing sexy about helping people to allocate their savings to support their wealth management plans.  However, it is rewarding life work to see families have the protection they need from unforeseen circumstances and help them through the transition of retirement or putting their kids through college. The most interesting part of our conversation for me focused on defining what is "enough?" As Cullen put it, if we could simply put into perspective what we already have, our definition of "enough" would look wildly different than it currently does today. And as a parent, listen to Cullen's closing remarks on how being a parent for him is like re-living his youth. Please enjoy my conversation with Cullen Roche. Location: New York Date: Saturday 5th December Project/company: Pragmatic Capitalism, Orcam Financial Group Role: Chief Investment Officer In the 1980's, Harry Browne devised an investment strategy designed to perform well in all economic conditions. It is referred to as the Permanent Portfolio. Investments are equally allocated to stocks, bonds, gold, and cash. The objective is for the portfolio to perform well in all economic conditions. But Harry Browne's strategy was developed in a period when short term boom and bust debt cycles were still a feature of economic systems. Since the global financial crisis of 2007, the debt cycle hasn't been allowed to function properly: recessions have been mitigated through unprecedented governmental monetary and fiscal stimulus programmes. In this new paradigm, where inflationary pressures cast a large shadow, what are the best investment strategies to take? Certain Bitcoiners are all in on the new form of money designed for these times. This does not fit everyone's risk appetite. But, having a portfolio that lacks exposure to Bitcoin risks missing out in a market that could otherwise be devoid of alpha. Then there is also a geographical variable at play: the US has certain inherent strengths that are not available to citizens of other countries, significantly affecting investment decisions.     In this interview, I talk to investment strategist and founder of the educational website Pragmatic Capitalism, Cullen Roche. We discuss the drivers for inflation, the role of government, investment strategies during uncertain times, and the place for Bitcoin in asset portfolios.
