May marks Wildfire Awareness and Preparedness Month—a time to reflect on the profound impact wildfires have had on California. Since 2020, over 7 million acres of our state's lands have been scorched by relentless blazes, causing immense destruction to communities and ecosystems. For ranchers and farmers, the toll is deeply personal. From the loss of grazing grounds, crops, and precious livestock to even more dire circumstances, these fires leave indelible marks on our food systems and local communities. In response to this crisis, agricultural advocates and legislators have united to enact crucial measures aimed at mitigating future wildfire devastation. Significant strides have been made calling for an increase in prescribed burning, along with the creation of the Livestock Pass Program and the Prescribed Fire Liability Pilot Program. Helping to lead the charge is the California Cattlemen's Association's Fire Sub-Committee—a coalition of ranchers, firefighters, researchers, and concerned citizens dedicated to safeguarding our state from future destruction. In this episode, Michael Delbar, podcast host and CEO of the Rangeland Trust, is joined by the Chair of the Fire Sub-Committee, Anthony Stornetta. Together, they discuss the committee's priorities, along with Anthony's personal experiences as both a firefighter and rancher along the Central Coast of California. If you are interested in learning more about the Livestock Pass Program or burn boss trainings, please feel free to reach out to Anthony directly at 805-423-6406.

This Labor Day weekend, as folks whose jobs were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic take on the extra burden of finding new work, we'll open replaying a June segment with a representative from the Workforce Alliance of South Central CT to review new and enhanced online training and resources. Then we'll learn how the COVID-19 pandemic is taking a toll on folks trying to work through recovery - or who continue to experience mental health challenges. September is National Recovery Month, and there's nobody better to discuss the current state of recovery practices than with the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and principle at Aware Recovery Care. September is also Preparedness Month, and with our local communities already experiencing tropical storms, tornadoes, extended power outages, and even some flooding, we're going to close chatting with the Ready campaign director at FEMA - the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency.

Mary McGinley, Wendy Sheridan, and Robin Renée are back from their end-of-summer vacation. On the 18th anniversary of 9/11, they return from a relaxing time away to some very serious topics. Each share their memories of the shock of September 11, 2001, how they dealt with it spiritually and emotionally, and how they experienced the world around them in response to the attacks. The conversation segues into the originally intended topic, gun control: What are the gun laws in your state? Can we not only mourn the losses to gun violence, but also affect change? Which norms are changing? Could a shift in our cultural story make a difference? Have you participated in gun control activism? In the News, Wendy describes coming out of her blanket fort only to be bombarded with the madness, including the latest on Brexit, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson finding himself in the minority (He may be out in a Scaramucci or two.), and confusing British politics in general. In other news, the American president is the self-appointed Chosen One, parodied expertly by Randy Rainbow, and poor Moscow Mitch doesn't like his hashtag. Later, Wendy lets us in on one of her vacation pastimes and gives her impressions of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Mary preferred watching the more peaceful, less eventful Travels by Narrowboat. In good times, we have the luxury of modern medical facilities and advanced techniques to isolate a sick patient from healthy people. If we ever find ourselves in a grid-down scenario, most of these advantages will go the way of the dinosaur, and we will be placed in, essentially, the same medical environment we experienced in the 19th century. It should be possible for the medically prepared to put together a “sick room” or “hospital tent” that will minimize the chance of infectious disease running rampant through your community. It’s important to care effectively for the sick while keeping the healthy out of the reach of contagion. Joe and Amy Alton tell you the basics of what makes an effective sick room for epidemic settings off the grid, plus discuss a number of infectious diseases that might become rampant in survival settings. Also, new fires on the California/Oregon border, 20 people sickened on a 14 hour flight from the Middle East, and much more! Plus, September is National Preparedness Month! Don't forget to get your medical kits up to snuff with Nurse Amy's entire line at store.doomandbloom.net!
