Reggae legend King Kong, also known as Dennis Thomas, emerged in the early 1980s Jamaican music scene alongside other iconic artists like Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty. His talent was quickly recognized by the legendary producer King Tubby, who brought him on board to record several singles for the Firehouse label, including "Step On Dem Corn," "Aids," and "Babylon."As digital music began to reshape the soundscape in 1985, King Kong collaborated with Anthony Red Rose on the hit song "Two Big Bull Ina One Pen." He later joined forces with producer King Jammy, churning out successive hits like "Legal We Legal," "Trouble Again," and "Mix Up" between 1985 and 1986. King Kong's versatility was further showcased during this period through his work with other labels including Black Scorpio, Bunny Lee, and Prince Jazzbo. In the late 1980s, King Kong's career took him beyond Jamaica to the United States and Canada, where he established his own label, Conscious Music.King Kong continued to make his mark in the late 1980s with a tribute song, "He Was A Friend," dedicated to the late reggae artist Tenor Saw. He then set his sights on new horizons, traveling to London in the early 1990s. There, he collaborated with several prominent figures in the reggae scene, including Mafia & Fluxy, Fashion Records, and Gussie P. He also linked up with the New York-based label Massive B.King Kong's creative spark remained evident in 1990 when he recorded a dubplate, a custom-made reggae record, titled "Call Mr. Madden." While initially unreleased, the song's potential was undeniable. Two years later, producer Bobby Konders decided to share "Call Mr. Madden" with the world, and it became a dancehall hit. Interestingly, the Fugees would later draw inspiration from this title for their smash hit "Fu-Gee-La" released in 1996.Despite these successes, King Kong's reggae career maintained a sporadic presence on the global stage.Reggae Reignited: Later Years and Continued SuccessAfter facing legal troubles in the mid-1990s, King Kong returned to Jamaica and reconnected with producer King Jammy, releasing tracks like "Seize All Guns" and "Break Down The Walls." However, it was the New York label Massive B who truly reignited his artistic fire. Collaborations with them produced inspirational songs like "Jah Is My Best Friend," "Earth Is The Lord," and "I Feel A Joy."King Kong's adventurous spirit then led him to Ethiopia in 2007. This new chapter culminated in the 2012 release of his 10th album, "Ethiopian Dream," a collaboration with the Dutch label King Shiloh. Singles like "Sweet Rub A Dub" and a cover of "Door Peeper" kept the momentum going. In 2017, he dropped an EP titled "In The Old Capital" featuring five tracks and their dub versions, produced by Old Capital Records.King Kong's artistic wellspring continued to flow in 2018 with the release of the acclaimed album "Repatriation" on the Irie Ites Records label. With a career spanning over 35 years and boasting an impressive discography of 12 albums and countless singles, King Kong remains a force to be reckoned with in the reggae world mark the minds of fans of the artist!https://www.irieites.net/https://www.facebook.com/irie.ites/https://soundcloud.com/irie-ites-recordshttps://www.youtube.com/user/IRIEITESMANAJAHhttps://twitter.com/IRIEITESRECORDSWho Needs a Superhero When You Have Whipped Body Butter?Dry, itchy skin? from the album MESSIAN DREAD - DANGEROUS DISCOMIXES http://www.dubophonic.com/2023/05/messian-dread-dangerous-discomixes.html https://ffm.to/o5jq9qj The concept of a DJ chanting over a riddim and singers jumping in and out is not new, not original, not uncommon. Where many styles and genres have incorporated the concept, no one can take away the fact that this all started in Jamaica during the 1970's and even before that. No one can deny that Roots Reggae music, mixed in Dub style, is a perfect foundation for a DJ to chant over and exactly that is what you can find in the new showcase album of Messian Dread. When the B-sides of Jamaican singles gradually changed from a mere instrumental version to a complete dub work-out by ones like King Tubby's, all of this paved the way for the maxi-singles or twelve-inch vinyl records: the extended mix containing both vocal and dub version in one long stop mix, often called discomixes. Dangerous Discomixes honors this tradition with nine traditional discomixes, all created by Messian Dread in his Dubroom studio between the years 2014-2015. Some material was pre-recorded in studio's like ARIWA, the vocals were legally obtained and licensed, but everything was completely re-arranged and fit into original Dubroom riddims. It includes nine traditional Roots Reggae discomixes, digging deeper into the vast ocean of the vibes of Messian Dread. All tracks are original Dubroom productions. The vocals (Kojak, Horseman, Seamus, Clifton, Dillinger, U-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Dillinger, Trinity) are legally obtained and licensed, the music and vocal arrangement created and mixed by Messian Dread with real horns, real this-and-that and of course real, authentic dub mixing. Nine extended tracks, with the first half carrying the original Reggae riddim with full length lyrical content, followed by its dub version. Experience how dub is actually transforming a Reggae track into a spaced-out piece of ear candy.

The Cables are a Jamaican rocksteady/reggae vocal trio led by Keble Drummond, who recorded for Studio One in the late 1960s. The Cables  led by Keble Drummond, backed by harmony singers Elbert Stewart (baritone) and Vince Stoddart (tenor).Cables were first formed in 1962.After recording a single for Sonia Pottinger around 1966, they recorded a string of singles for Studio One, and these were later collected on the album What Kind of World in 1970. "What Kind of World" has been described as "a classic...a low-key showcase for some of the most under-rated vocals of the age".Studio One boss Clement "Coxsone" Dodd built up demand for the "Baby Why" single by limiting it to sound system plays for four months before releasing it.The rhythm tracks were later employed by Dodd on several tracks by other artists. Unsatisifed with the lack of money received from Dodd, The Cables recorded for Harry J while they were still under contract to Studio One, with Drummond altering his voice and the single released under the name "Herbie Carter" (a real singer who recorded for Harry J) to avoid Dodd finding out. By 1970, The Cables had left Studio One. "(Everybody) Feel Alright" was entererd into the Festival Song Contest in 1971, losing out to Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby". "Baby Why" formed the basis of deejay tracks from both Dennis Alcapone and Prince Jazzbo, and the rhythm was used by The Gladiators for their 1974 track "Rearrange"

With the classic recordings “Baby Why” and “What Kind of World” the legendary Jamaican harmony vocal group The Cables secured their place in music history. It was in 1968 when the group rocketed to stardom when Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd took them into Studio One recording studios. Founded by lead vocalist Keble Drummond, along with harmony singers, Vince Stoddart, tenor, and Elbert “Stewie” Stewart, baritone, the Cables brought with them the lyrics and the upbeat, lilting melody of “Baby Why”. The tune was a sensation on the Jamaican sound system circuit before being released on Coxsone's Studio One label where it soon established itself as the number one hit on all charts for four weeks. Also recorded on the same session was “What Kind of World,” a Vince Stoddart composition. Coxsone continued as The Cables' producer, and the result was a long string of consistently strong tracks. The Cables first LP, “What Kind of World”, released in 1970, is a compilation of their Studio One achievements. Since then the album was re-released on Heartbeat Records in 1987 and is now a steady international seller in CD format. “Baby Why” is the first track on Heartbeat's sought after “Best of Studio One” disk, and “What Kind of World” is featured on Heartbeat's “Full Up, More Hits From Studio One”. The tunes are entrenched in Jamaican music consciousness as the rhythm tracks have been revitalized by dee jays such as Dennis Alcapone and Prince Jazzbo, as well as other vocal groups and singers, including the Gladiators, The Mighty Diamonds, Freddie MacGregor, Sanchez, Morgan Heritage and Barrington Levy.   (c) 2013 copyright www.caribbeanradioshow.com/www.crsradio.com  All Rights Reserved

Prince Jazzbo is a Jamaican DJ and was very successful as a Producer in Reggae music with his Ujama record label. Jazzbo started as a DJ on Killa Whip sound in the Homestead area of Spanish Town. At A dance between Killa Whip and Ruddy's Sound in 1971, Jazzbo "clashed" with the great I-Roy. This clash was the start of some of the first musical "beef" between artists - well before Beenie and Capleton and Tupac and Biggie. More importantly, it was a patron by the name of Coxsone Dodd who was at that dance, that invited Jazzbo to Studio One to record the very next morning. Jazzbo was there at 5:00am waiting for Coxsone. Prince Jazzbo is from the original school of toasters in Jamaica - alongside U-Roy, I-Roy, Big Youth, Lizzy, Dennis Alcapone, and others. The style of Dj'ing has a unique sound and style in that era. At the time of this interview Jazzbo was actively producing the artists Horace Ferguson, Horace Andy, Buzz Parker, Little Jazzbo (his son), and Black Thunder out of Belgium. 20 - Reggae Lover Podcast - Lee 'Scratch' Perry Exclusively

Reggae Lover

Welcome to Episode 20 of the Reggae Lover Podcast, my first "dubwise" edition. This mix was specially requested by Ras Jamal in Savannah, Georgia and features the musical productions and performances of Lee "Scratch" Perry exclusively. One of the pioneers in the development of dub music and remixing in addition to numerous other innovations in production, Lee 'Scratch' Perry truly paved the way for the EDM, Hip-Hop, and Reggae movements of today. Show Notes. We start off in the 60 - 70 BPM range with The Upsetters' Curly Dub and move into a couple different dub versions of Satisfy My Soul featuring Bob Marley and The Wailers. The Upsetters' Super Ape is up next, leading into a "Vibrate On" medley. Augustus Pablo, Max Romeo, Hugo Blackwood and Dr. Alimantado are featured on the riddim alongside Perry and The Upsetters. A cool blend transitions from there into Bob Marley dub once again with "Live," a Lively Up Yourself dub version and then a Screw Face dub version entitled "Face Man." Junior Murvin can then be heard singing "Roots Train," followed by his massive hit tune "Police And Thieves." I selected 3 tracks from Perry's "Arkology" box set on the same riddim. The voices of Glen DaCosta and Jah Lion are featured in this set along with some wicked Saxophone and the masterful instrumentation of Lee Perry dubbing out on the board. For the next few tracks I go into the Jungle Dub album, my favorite album of Perry's work. The very heavy-weight Super Ape album, Ras Jamal's highest rated Scratch Perry album is also a focal point of this mix. Other noteable selections served up are "Bad Walking" with Tommy McCook and "I Chase The Devil/Croaking Lizard" with Max Romeo and Prince Jazzbo. Please email me (reggaeloverpodcast@gmail.com) if you want the full tracklist. My wish is that listeners will hear this mix and go looking for Lee Perry's music to purchase. Dub music should be a part of every reggae lover's music collection.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
