Our exit today has us realizing that our one vice is that we're too nice. This week, we are looking at a double feature of films of men behaving badly and "learning to be better people." First, we will talk about Tomcats, written and directed by Gregory Poirier. Next, we will talk about Shallow Hal, written by Sean Moynihan and the Farrelly Brothers and directed by the Farrelly Brothers.Along the way, we talk musicals we walked out of, The Royal Tenenbaums, lots of Farrelly Brothers, Dakota Fanning, Monkeybone, lazy filmmaking, and lots and lots of awful men. But our final reviews may surprise you a little!Thememusic by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.
Get ready for a wild, surreal ride through the twisted corridors of early-2000s cinema as the Reel Comic Heroes crew dives headfirst into Monkeybone—a film that's part dark fantasy, part slapstick comedy, and entirely confusing. In this episode, we unpack the strange journey of cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser), who finds himself trapped in a bizarre limbo world filled with oddball creatures, bad decisions, and one very horny monkey. We'll explore the film's chaotic tone, the surprisingly impressive creature design by Stan Winston Studio, and ask the big questions—like “Who exactly was this movie for?” and “Was Hollywood just... okay with this?” We also look at director Henry Selick's jump from The Nightmare Before Christmas to Monkeybone, and how the film's troubled production and studio meddling might've buried its potential. Expect laughs, bewilderment, and a healthy dose of 2000s nostalgia (and regret). Spoiler warning: monkey business ahead. What happens when Henry Selick, the Director of a Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, and James and The Giant Peach decides to create a live action film? You get the insanity that is Monkeybone. This dark fantasy/gross out comedy stars Brendan Fraser, Bridgette Fonda, the voice of John Tutoro, and zombie Chris Kattan and when it released in 2001, it failed at the box office and marked the short end to Henry Selick's live action career. But does this movie deserve all the hate? And are there elements of Monkeybone that critics in 2001 just didn't get? We'll find out today with our special guest ANASTASIA ELFMAN returning to lend us a hand as we explore the dark world of Monkeybone. Our exit today has us trying to control the manifestation of our childhood trauma. This week, we are discussing Monkeybone, written by Sam Hamm and directed by Henry Selick. As they try to decide whether the movie is worth it's poor reputation, they also discuss the too short career of Bridget Fonda, Henry Selick, Tim Burton, Beetlejuice, David Lynch, Giancarlo Esposito, Blank Check, the upcoming Snow White movie, and whether Robert De Niro is a good actor or not. You folks remember that early 2000's movie about two people switching bodies and it becomes a whole fiasco of them trying to get back into their original bodies and chaos ensues and affects their families and careers? We're not talking about the 2003 film Freaky Friday, we're actually talking about the 2001 Henry Selick film, Monkeybone. Brought to you by the director of Nightmare before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline; is an odd mix of stop-motion animation, puppetry, and a live-action Brendan Fraser as he attempts to reason with the will of the fates and reclaim his life that was lost. Oh and there's a perverted farting monkey in it.

Just in time for Brendan Fraser's big comeback, we're taking a look back at his misguided collaboration with Henry Selick - 2001's bizarro flop MONKEYBONE. Justin McElroy (no relation to Bridget Fonda's Dr. Julie McElroy) returns to the podcast after having watched this film a whopping seven times (!!) to unpack all the madness. Why are there no rules or logic to the film's “Dark Town” underworld? What was the appeal of Chris Kattan's “Mango” character on SNL? Was this film the nail in the coffin for the kitschy retro-revival genre of projects that dominated the 1990s? Can we write the money we spent to rent this movie off on our taxes? This movie is a mess and Hollywood decided to blame the person who's fault it was not - Brenden Fraser. This movie is a non-emotional corny mess even down to the Looney Tunes TM sound effects. What should have been a man's struggle to return to life from a nightmare world, instead is packed with flat laughs and stupid bits. And we can't even talk about Whoopi Goldberg who is phenomenally terrible.Hate Watching is the show that is not the go to show.#henryselick #brendenfraser Been playing a new game on my phone Pikmin Bloom. Its not new to the world but it is new to me. As I walk around I plant flowers and am then rewarded with Pikmin who then go do jobs for me which leads to them getting fruit which I feed to them to get more flowers. Rinse and repeat. But I love it. Ive got my own little army that follows me around and does what I see. I now why people yearn for power. I have it now and I will never give it up. Until I get bored and move on to the next thing.

The movie that fools you twice. Once by making you assume there is going to be way too much Chris Kattan when he’s hardly in it and then fooling you […]
