For Episode 10 of the Historical Belfast Podcast I've been chatting to Professor Richard Grayson, head of history at Goldsmiths University London. Richard Grayson has many publications to his name, too many to list here certainly, but I will mention two in particular: Dublin's Great Wars  - The First World War, the Easter Rising and the Irish Revolution, published in 2018 and one that I know listeners of this podcast would enjoy.  And secondly, Belfast Boys – How Unionists and Nationalists Fought and Died Together in the First World War, published in 2009, it is a book that I have leaned heavily on over the years, it's become almost like a bible in the sense that it's the one book that I keep going back to in order to find solutions for my own research conundrums and it generally always comes up with the answers.Belfast Boys fundamentally changed how I approach the writing of history. It led me into a world of history by numbers, an scientific approach to the craft which is underpinned by statistics. However, Richard has cleverly taken that scientific approach and weaved through it the individual and local stories which make it relatable for the reader. The late Professor Keith Jeffery, my one-time supervisor at Queen's described Belfast Boys as ‘An extremely important book. This work of humane scholarship deserves to become a classic'. For me, 12 years on from its publication, it is already a classic, and as relevant today as it was when it was first released.

Violence Series #4 of 4. Though they’re rarely at the fore of the story, the women of Ireland’s 1916 Easter Rising were essential to the rebellion. They carried messages and supplies, provided cover fire in battles, and served on the front lines. In this episode Averill and Sarah dive into the historical treatment of the women of the Easter Rising, and the failure of the Free State after Ireland gained its independence to adequately honor the sacrifice of those women. Get the transcript and Further Reading recommendations at digpodcast.org Bibliography Mary McAuliffe and Liz Gillis, Richmond Barracks 1916: we were there: 77 women of the Easter Rising, (Dublin City Council, 2016). On this episode John Dorney interviews Richard Grayson on his recent book Dublin's Great Wars, which examines Ireland's capital city's experience both of the First World War and nationalist revolution from 1914-1923. They discuss the varied motivations and social backgrounds of the recruits. Their experiences at the battlefronts. How the war came to define rival and mutually hostile brands of Irish nationalism and republicanism. How the war veterans fared on their return to Ireland, challenging assumptions about their presumed political allegiances and treatment by republicans and how commemoration of the war is a far more complex story than simply wilful 'forgetting'.

No olvides dejar tu opinión. Nos vemos la siguiente!

Critical Dialogue

As a curator and artist, Richard Grayson explores the operations of narrative: how we generate them to help us understand the world around us and how in turn these narratives generate worlds of their own. Orthodox and heterodox belief systems for scientific, religious and political constructions of the world are investigated and their contemporary resonances explored both through his own work as an artist and exhibitions of works by other contemporary artists.

The Orange Book: Clegg's Political Lemon?

The Orange Book, published in 2004, is a collection of political essays by leading Liberal Democrats. Although the writers come from a range of viewpoints, the book has been seen as an attempt by party right wingers to reclaim the party's economic liberal origins in the nineteenth century and give it a new modern emphasis. But for some leading Liberal Democrats these ideas are now closer to tenets of Conservative thought. So will the Orange Bookers bind the coalition ever closer together or lead to fractures and even splits in Liberal Democrat ranks? Edward Stourton talks to one of the leading Orange Book Liberal Democrats, David Laws MP, about the philosophy behind the book and why they were so keen to publish it. He discusses the consequences for the party of the gap which has now emerged between public perceptions of where the party stands on major issues and where its leadership's inclinations lie. And he discusses what the longer-term implications of the Orange Bookers' relationship with David Cameron's Conservatives will be. Among those he talks to are Baroness Williams of Crosby; the former Conservative Shadow Home Secretary, The Rt. Hon. David Davis, MP; the historian and newly-elected Labour MP, Tristram Hunt; the expert on political leadership, Professor Peter Clarke; and the former Liberal Democrat policy director and Orange Book sceptic, Richard Grayson.
