This misconception has existed for ages, but here's the truth: Tarot has nothing to do with black magic.If you are new here, welcome to the "Memorizing Tarot Cards" podcast, your three-minute lessons on learning and memorizing each card using symbolism. Today, we're exploring common misconceptions about tarot cards. We have done two complete rounds of three-minute episodes, where we learned the cards upright and reversed. Before we jump back into it, I wanted to switch gears for the holiday season and share my opinions on some common tarot misconceptions. Let's get started.So, Where does This belief come from?The idea that Tarot can be linked to black magic may stem from misunderstandings about its use and origins. Here are three reasons why.The first reason is Fear of the Unknown.  For centuries, anything mystical or misunderstood was cast aside.  In some cultures, practices like divination were associated with witchcraft, which was feared and condemned.The second reason could be Pop Culture Stereotypes. Movies and TV shows often depict Tarot as part of ominous rituals or spooky fortune-telling scenes. This has created a dramatic but false image of Tarot as something sinister.The last reason is the Occult Connections to it. While Tarot was used in occult practices, the word "occult" means "hidden" or "mysterious." It doesn't mean evil. Tarot is a tool, and like any tool, its purpose depends on how it's used.Next, let's talk about What Tarot Actually Is. Tarot is a system of cards designed to help with self-reflection, guidance, and storytelling. It's a way to tap into your intuition and explore the energies and situations around you. People use Tarot for different reasons, such as Personal Growth.  The cards can help some people gain insight into challenges or decisions.  They are also used for Creative Inspiration.  Tarot can help with Developing ideas for art, writing, or problem-solving.  Some people also use Tarot for Spiritual Practices.  The messages can be used to explore inner wisdom or connect with higher guidance. In truth, there is nothing inherently dark or magical about Tarot.  It is a neutral tool that reflects the energy and intentions of the person using it.A misconception like this can be harmful because it can deter people from exploring Tarot if they feel drawn to it.  It creates unnecessary fear around a practice meant to empower and inspire people.  It perpetuates a stereotype that can disconnect Tarot from its true purpose. The Bottom Line is that reading Tarot isn't black magic.  Tarot is a mirror for your intuition and a tool for self-discovery. Let's get started. So, Where Did This Belief Come From? The idea that you shouldn't let anyone touch your tarot cards stems from concerns about energy transfer.There are three common myths. The first, is that a person's energy could disrupt your connection with the cards, Or, their touch might "taint " or weaken the card's power. Some also believe that only the owner of the tarot cards should handle them to maintain the spiritual alignment.While these beliefs come from wanting to protect your connection with your cards, they're not universal truths. Letting someone handle your cards won't automatically ruin their reading or your cards. Next, let's discuss why letting others touch your Tarot cards is okay. First, Shared Energy Builds Connection. When someone shuffles or draws cards, they share their energy and bring it into the reading. This makes the reading feel more personal to the querant. Second, Remember that the cards are tools.  Their effectiveness comes from your intuition and connection with the cards.  It is not discounted because a person touches them. And Third, your comfort level is really what matters. Whether or not others touch your cards is a personal choice. If you're okay with it, there's no rule against it.How do you approach this when you are reading cards? If you decide to let others touch your cards, Invite Them to Shuffle.  Many readers ask their clients to shuffle the cards or cut the cards. This helps them feel involved and invested in the reading.  The other way is to Set the Tone by asking the person to set an intention, such as asking them to focus on their question as they shuffle.  Another way is to keep things flexible.  If someone's nervous about touching the cards, offer to shuffle for them instead.Where I am at, is that I have no problems with someone shuffling my cards. If they want to, I allow them to shuffle until they feel ready to pass me the deck. I lay out the cards from there. The reason why, is because that is how I learned to read cards. None of these myths were communicated to me. I never started this practice worrying about these things. Also, I have been the sole person touching the cards. That is when a girlfriend of mine calls me up wanting a reading. In that case, I am the only one in the room. Both methods have worked well when I am reading cards. In my experience, it hasn't made a difference. The Bottom Line is that no tarot law says others can't touch your tarot cards. It's all about what feels right for you. Some readers love the energy exchange, while others prefer to keep their cards private. Maybe you've seen those readers who seem to know every single card by heart and thought, "I'll never get there." Here's the truth. Tarot doesn't have to take years to learn. Let's get started.So, Why Does This Myth Even Exist?  The idea that Tarot takes years to master is likely due to two factors.The first reason is the Sheer Number of Cards.  With Seventy-eight cards in the deck, each with an upright and reversed meaning, it can feel overwhelming to memorize everything at once. People assume they have to know it all to get started.  The truth is when I started, the ones I had the most trouble remembering were the court cards.  Even when I thought I knew them, I would draw a blank.  Even though I didn't read them perfectly back then, I shared what I knew.  I focused on the suits, which I knew, and the colors in the sky, which I knew, and identified them as a person influencing the story in the cards.  In other words, I didn't know everything about the court cards, but I weaved what I knew into the story.  Also, I didn't read reversals initially because I was still mastering upright.  It was where I was at, and I still had powerful readings with others.  I believe that because of their reaction and the dialogue from the cards. The second reason is the complexity of putting the story together when you look at all the cards in a spread.  Tarot is rich in symbolism, numerology, astrology, and mythology. Some think you must master all these systems to be a "real" tarot reader.  As mentioned, this takes time and Practice.  But here's the thing.  You don't need to know everything to start reading Tarot.  You can start from where you are, with the symbolism that you know across the cards, and begin to pull the stories together in the cards little by little. Build your knowledge and start from where you're at.So, how can you learn Tarot without the pressure of not knowing enough?First, just Start Small. Focus on a few cards at a time. For example, pick one series and explore its theme, like Cups for Emotions.  Remember, the journey from Ace to Ten is the same sequence in every suit.  If you learn one, it's easier to learn the rest.Second, Use Your Intuition if you get stuck. You don't have to memorize every card's meaning perfectly. Look at the imagery, colors, and symbols. Use what you can remember, then ask yourself, "What does this card feel like? What story is it telling me?"And third, of course, Practice Regularly.  Pull one card daily and reflect on how it connects to your life. This simple habit builds confidence and familiarity without overwhelming you.  The truth is, Tarot doesn't take years to start.  Your connection with the cards and reading Tarot will deepen over time.Next, I want to share an example of how I observed my own progression with learning tarot, after I took my course. At this point, I didn't have the cards memorized. I just had the foundational knowledge to fall back on. First, I started seeing patterns in readings across the cards.  For example, if I was reading for someone and they were starting a new career, I wouldn't only see the Ace of Pentacles for new beginnings on money, I may also see the Fool for a leap of faith and a Page of Wands for someone young in their journey.Second, my intuition grew stronger when I shared the stories I saw in the cards.  With time, I could see the stories in the cards more easily and discuss them, using symbolism as my guide.And speaking of symbolism, the third thing I noticed is that my understanding of symbolism started expanding.  That happened because I revisited and sought content to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.  It was clear where I was getting stuck, which was court cards.  I took the time to learn the court cards better, making my readings much smoother.The Bottom Line is that you don't need years of experience to start reading Tarot. You only need curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a deck of cards. For me, the journey with Tarot has been continuous, but I practiced with friends as soon as I took my course, using the little book when I got stuck.  With time, I stopped using the book and just told them what I knew about the cards in their positions.  So, grab your cards, shuffle, and get started.That's all for today's episode.  Remember, to memorize Tarot, keep practicing Tarot. Maybe you've seen beautiful silk wraps in shops or heard it from someone in the tarot community. It's a nice idea, but here's the truth. Before we jump back into it, I wanted to switch gears for the holiday season and share my opinions on some common tarot misconceptions. Let's get started. So, Where Did This Belief Come From? This idea likely comes from a mix of tradition and symbolism. The First reason is silk's historical value.  Silk has long been associated with luxury, protection, and spiritual practices. It was once considered rare and precious, so wrapping tarot cards in silk added an air of importance and care.The second reason may be the mystical symbolism associated with silk.  Silk is often seen as a "pure" material, believed to shield energy. Some practitioners thought silk could protect the cards from negative energy or help "charge" them with positive vibrations. The third reason is the Victorian Mystique.  During the nineteenth-century revival of mysticism, Tarot was often paired with other rituals and traditions, including elaborate storage methods to elevate its perceived sacredness.While wrapping your cards in silk can feel luxurious and intentional, it's not required for the cards to work effectively. Tarot is a tool, and the energy you bring to it is far more important than how you store it. In fact, you can store your cards however you like.  Some popular ideas are to store your cards tucked in its original package.  Or, you can store them in a wooden box or bag.  I keep my favorite in a cranberry-colored velvet pouch.  Also, you can simply store them on a shelf or a desk where they are easily accessible.  What matters is that you store your cards in a way that feels meaningful and practical for you.  If silk resonates with you, go for it.  If not, that's perfectly fine. What really matters, is that the way you store your cards should reflect your relationship with them.  For some, that means silk.  For others, it might mean a favorite hand-sewn bag or nothing at all. Ensure that your choice takes into consideration what is practical for you.  Not everyone resonates with pulling your cards out as a ritual. I have about thirty sets of tarot cards, and I have them displayed on a shelf in my office so that I can quickly grab the ones I wish to use.  They also look amazing, and I know exactly where they are.  Most are in their original packaging, and the rider cards that I use most often is in a velvet bag.  However, one of my dear friends, who also reads cards, loves the ritual of pulling out a wooden box that stores her tarot cards.  They are wrapped in silk, and she unwraps them, pulls a candle out of the box, and lights it.  She does the whole thing, and she loves it.  And its fun getting my cards read by her, and her process is part of the fun.  I don't feel that she takes it more seriously than I do.  I just think that we have different ways of expressing it.The point is that there is no right or wrong way to store your cards.  If silk feels right for you, embrace it, as my friend does. If it doesn't, know that your cards will still work just fine. The bottom line is that tarot cards don't need silk.  They need you. Your intentions, energy, and connection to the cards are what truly matter. Let's get started.So, Why do People Think You Can't Ask the same question Twice? This idea likely comes from the belief that Tarot provides the "right " answer the first time, and asking again might confuse the energy or seem like you're second-guessing the cards. While this might sound logical, Tarot is a tool for reflection and insight.  It's not a strict, one-and-done oracle.I want to share three reasons why asking again for more clarity is okay. The First reason is when the first answer felt unclear or overwhelming. Asking again gives you a chance to refine the question or focus on a specific aspect of the situation.  For example, asking a question about what to expect in the coming year may give you a lot of cards that aren't related to your concern.  Asking again in a way that zeros in on your problem, such as, " What can I expect in the coming year in my love life." That question is more specific. That makes it easier to interpret all cards in that context. The second reason why it's okay to ask the same question again is because your energy, or the energy of others, may have shifted.  When I first took my tarot card course, I was in my twenties, and the focus of many tarot card readings with my girlfriends was romantic interests.  I found myself doing readings for one friend several times a week, and the question was always the same.  Needless to say, her mind was changing, so the same question could easily show a different result two days later.  Pulling cards again can offer fresh insights from a new perspective.The third reason is that it may be part of understanding how the cards see the situation you are asking about.  For some people, repetition helps them connect with their intuition. Asking the same question differently can deepen your understanding of the situation. For example, if I am doing a reading and I am asking about a job prospect, it may start as a yes or no question.  For example, am I getting the job I applied for or not?  Sometimes, the card that comes up isn't entirely clear.  I may start asking questions about the process.  I may ask what the work environment is like in the company I am interested in.  Next, let's cover some tips on how to ask the Same Question Twice.First, Change Your Approach to the question.  Instead of asking the same thing, rephrase the question to focus on a different angle. For example, instead of asking, "Will I get the job?" try, "What can I do to improve my chances of getting the job"Second, wait a while.  Give yourself time to reflect on the first reading before asking again. This will prevent you from falling into an endless loop of seeking answers without taking action.  Wait a day or two and see if the energy changes.  If the answers don't reflect your first question, I wouldn't discount the message.  There may be something in there that hasn't happened yet.And third, Be Honest with Yourself.  Are you asking again because you genuinely need more clarity? Or are you asking again because you're hoping for a different answer? If it's the latter, take a step back and explore why the original response didn't sit well with you. After all, Repeating the Question Isn't Helpful if a person obsesses over the outcome and ignores the cards' guidance.  Multiple readings might just muddy the waters.  Tarot works best as a tool for reflection and guidance, not reassurance.The Bottom Line is that you can ask the same question twice.  Tarot isn't going to punish you for it. The key is to approach your question with intention and self-awareness. Each reading is an opportunity to explore your question from a new angle, deepen your understanding, and connect with your intuition. So, the next time you're tempted to reshuffle, ask yourself: "What am I really seeking?" That little pause might be all you need. That's all for today's episode. Today, we're exploring common misconceptions with tarot cards. We have done two complete rounds of three-minute episodes, where we learned the cards upright and reversed. Before we jump back into it, I wanted to switch gears for the holiday season and share my opinions on some common tarot misconceptions. Let's get into it.So, where Did The idea Come From that we can only gift tarot cards? The belief likely started as a tradition. In some folklore, a tarot deck was passed from a teacher to a student, almost like a rite of passage to practice tarot. Over time, this tradition became a superstition. It seems like it may have got out of hand, with someone needing to “choose” you before you can start reading tarot. And sure, that sounds mystical and romantic, but I don't believe it is true. I will get into why I believe that in just a minute.I want to explain three reasons why I feel you can absolutely buy your own tarot cards if you want to.First, when you choose a deck for yourself, you're drawn to its artwork, its energy, or even its theme. You are connected to those cards for a reason. You open it up, you flip through and read the little book to get familiar with them. Really, that connection is what makes the deck work for you, not how you acquired it.The second reason buying your own tarot cards won't curse you or mess up your readings, is because the magic of tarot is in the symbolism, and your interpretation of the cards as the reader. The cards themselves are not a superstition or anything evil. If the person has pure intentions, that is the energy of your reading. And the third reason is because gifting yourself is taking control of your own desires. Think of it this way. When you buy your first set of tarot cards, you are saying, “I'm ready to begin this journey.” It's a gift from you to you, and that's pretty powerful. The Bottom Line, if you're waiting around for someone to gift you tarot cards, you might never get started. And the truth is, there's no rulebook. Tarot is not about gatekeeping.On a final note, I not only bought my first set of cards. I bought all of them, except one! My dear friend, Shelli, use to read my tarot cards. I wanted to learn how to do it myself, so I bought a course, and I was told which tarot cards to buy so all students were on the same set. I walked into Chapters and I bought it. That was decades ago, and it was an awesome decision for me! I have about thirty sets of cards, but I mostly use my Rider deck for readings. When The World Reversed appears in a reading, it's a sign to examine where you might be holding yourself back from completion or success. If you are feeling any fears, doubts, or unresolved issues, be advised that addressing these blocks will bring your journey to a satisfying conclusion. It may also indicate that you're avoiding closure in a situation, whether it's a relationship, project, or personal goal. The reversed World encourages you to take the steps needed to tie up loose ends and embrace a fresh start. What is the best way to memorize The World card in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed World card experience is remembering all of those itty bitty details that must be wrapped up when you leave one opportunity for another.  I must ensure that my desk and tasks are up to date and handed off.  It is even more important that my employer feels things are tied neatly in a bow.  I ensure I do that on all contracts, but I always have fears and doubts that I missed something.  Ensuring any loose ends are taken care of makes the endings and new beginnings sweeter.That's all for today's episode. For example, my reversed Sun card experience was when I had many obstacles seeing the Sun in a situation.  I was working for a software company in 1998, and this company was before Y2K.  We had a number of stressed-out clients, and this was the first time I ever had a job with this much pressure.  The obstacle I had trouble overcoming with my Reversed Sun card situation was learning to cope with the pressure.  The majority of that experience was a sun upright for so many reasons.  It completely changed the direction of my career, for starters.  It was really where my training career started.  Further, at the time, training was done in person, so I traveled all over North America as a young woman for work.  My light dimmed because I couldn't see through the pressure. I was missing all of the experience I was gaining, and all the travelling I was doing, for free. Twenty five years later, I still reflect on that time as such an incredible opportunity. For example, my reversed Moon card experience was when a truth was revealed about someone I was close to.  Unbeknownst to many of us, this person was splashed across the news, sharing that they were involved in organized crime.  The headlines and story attached to it sounded like something out of a movie, and this group of people were going to jail, including a female lifelong friend.  What??!!  None of us who knew her realized this person was into these illegal activities as a side hustle.  Our upright Moon was simply under the illusion that they primarily kept to themselves, and they appeared to have a problem with alcohol, drugs, or both.  When the Moon reversed, we saw the situation was much worse.  Unexpectedly worse.  This revelation challenged my previous perceptions, and to a certain extent, I mourned who I thought she was. For example, my reversed Star card was when I moved from my parent's home in Ontario to Western Canada when I was 19.  The first year I was there, I had a lot of trouble making friends.  I was a nanny and didn't have a car, so I spent a lot of time in the home taking care of three children.  Outings with the kids were limited to parks in the area that we could walk to.  I was lonely and isolated, and I felt like it was Groundhog Day every day.  Even though I wasn't into tarot cards back then, I needed to recognize the energy of the Star Reversed and get back to why I moved across the country.  I found myself back in the Star Upright by taking control of the situation.  I started volunteering after hours to try to meet people.  I also contacted the nanny agency that placed me and asked if any other nannies were interested in play dates with their kids.  These actions started turning that Star card upright.That's all for today's Star Card Reversed episode. It's about understanding the consequences of our actions and striving to align with integrity and honesty. When Justice appears reversed, however, this balance is disrupted. It can indicate dishonesty, unfair treatment, or an unwillingness to accept responsibility. The reversed Justice card often points to a need to examine where accountability is lacking. It may be within yourself, or in the situations and relationships around you. It's a call to confront truths, no matter how uncomfortable, and to work toward restoring balance and fairness. When Justice reversed appears in a reading, it's often a sign to reflect on your actions and decisions. The card asks you to own up to mistakes and take steps to make things right, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and integrity. For example, my reversed Justice card moment was ten years ago.  I was in a contract with a large company, and the program manager was asking someone on my team, directly, to do something that would have gotten them fired.  I will not go into the details, but it was indeed a bold ask, and this was a young person, who was working the second contract of their career. What makes this a Justice Reversed is that I had to advocate for fairness for this team member in a very unfair situation.  Sadly, Justice was not served for this program manager, but the team member was not put in harm's way by executing the request, which could have been damaging to her and her career at a very young age.That's all for today's Justice Card Reversed episode. The reversed Wheel of Fortune often points to a period where you may feel as though luck is not on your side. You also may experience delays and obstacles that disrupt your plans. So what does that mean when we see the Wheel of Fortune card reversed in a reading? When The Wheel of Fortune reversed appears in a reading, it's a sign to accept that some things are beyond your control. For example, my reversed Wheel of Fortune card moment was when I was off work for six months.  I couldn't seem to get traction on a new contract.  It was when there was a slump in the economy, and there weren't many new contracts.  I was flipping between panic and determination as I kicked up side hustles to keep money flowing.  Finding those ways to adapt to the situation financially while still looking for work gave me a sense of control over a problem that was, quite frankly, out of control.  What was in my control, was staying patient, positive, and productive on finding a new role, and keeping money coming in part-time. It's a call to evaluate whether you're moving in the right direction or if external forces are pulling you away from your goals. So what does that mean when we see The Chariot reversed in a reading? When The Chariot Reversed appears in a reading, it's a sign to reassess your approach. This card suggests that it's time to pause, gather your thoughts, and decide how to regain control over your course of action. It also indicates a need to let go of rigid control and accept that not everything can be forced or driven by sheer will. The Chariot Reversed asks you to find a balance between determination and adaptability, knowing when to push forward and when to allow things to unfold naturally. So, what is the best way to memorize The Chariot in reverse? Tying the card to a personal experience helps me remember it. For example, my reversed Chariot moment is a pattern I have with contracts that are not in flow.  I do give it my all when I am in a contract.  It's easy when everything flows with team collaboration, and the client is happy with the content.  Most contracts are like this.  However, it is easy for my Chariot to become reversed for the odd contract that is not in flow.  I then need to ask myself how I can create more flow in whatever part is not working. The other option of course is to endure, and to look for another contract upon expiry of the difficult one. Once I have adapted and have made a decision on the next course of action, my chariot can become upright again. For example, my reversed Lovers moment was around challenging decisions.  That, for me, was the time when I had to decide where to put my dad when he needed hospice care.  I don't mean which care center, I mean what city.  He lived on the east side of the country, and I lived on the west side.  We are talking a 24-hour drive away.  If I had moved him to my city, he would have only had me.  He didn't have his other family members or friends nearby.  At the time, I was in my late thirties and traveling extensively for work, which would inhibit my ability to spend regular time with him.  Making that decision was for sure a reversed lover because I needed to look at what he needed and what I could do around my career.  I was stuck on what I "should do" in this situation.  As you can see, The Lovers card is not only about romantic relationships but all relationships, commitment, and inner conflicts.That's all for today's episode of The Lovers Reversed. For example, my reversed Magician moment was a person my husband and I were dealing with, and we were trying to help this person out.  My husband works in the winter and has the summer off, and this person worked with him on his crew in the winter.  This person was a bit of a fast talker and always seemed to be hard on his luck.  The story around this person was that he wanted to operate a landscaping business in the summer in the off-season.  He was a charmer and, in my opinion, a dreamer.  He spends lots of time sharing his big plans and creating trust with people through his stories.  Unfortunately, we helped him by lending him some equipment to start things, and he disappeared with it.  Someone we used to talk to regularly, vanished off the face of the earth with equipment.  No more returning calls, texts, or emails.  This person was just gone.  We believed in this person's potential, but at the end of the day, they acted out of integrity.  It's been close to five years since we talked to this person and we never did get the equipment back. That's all for today's episode of The Magician reversed. If contracts were available, I did not want to burn bridges by accepting an employee position.  The short story is that I decided to take the employee position and not be tempted by the contract world unless something happened to my job.  The company was sold after a few years, which led me back into the contract world.  But I did stay true to my decision. This is the mental prison we create sometimes, where we can't see a way out.  Often the barriers are self-created in our minds through our view on something. However, when the Eight of Swords appears reversed, this energy shifts toward freedom and empowerment. It's about breaking out of these mental constraints and realizing we can change our perspective. The reversed Eight of Swords encourages us to let go of fear and self-doubt, allowing ourselves to step into a place of greater clarity and courage.So what does that mean when we see the Eight of Swords reversed in a reading? The ace of swords reminds us that effective communication is critical to navigating challenges, and sometimes, we need to take a step back to get us there. In this case, the North Star was our project goal. We needed to remember that we were all hired for a reason. We were hired for our expertise, experience, and commitment to excellence.Remember, the key to mastering tarot is practice.
