Mystery cloaks this beautiful representation of the Goddess, Isis, or is she the Mother, Sophia? Representing the spirit of female wisdom, The High Priestess is the first Divine Feminine energy that is introduced in the Major Arcana of the Tarot. The High Priestess rules the subconscious mind and she is able to receive the blueprint of manifestation which is foundational energy for a witch's practice. Join April and Maggie as they dive into her energy and the history of the illustration by Pamela Colman Smith. Pamela was gifted in her psychic abilities and her artwork has stood the test of time in the collective consciousness. Tarot cards were initially used for playing games in Italy in the 1430s. The first tarot decks were created by adding a fifth suit of 21 cards called trionfi ("triumphs") and an extra card called il matto ("the fool") to the existing four-suited playing card deck. Wealthy families commissioned customized card decks from artists as a status symbol. Tarot cards were not used for "divination" -- the practice of attempting to foretell the future or gain insight into a situation through the interpretation of omens, signs, or events-- until into the late 18th Century when the idea was introduced by Antoine Court de Gébelin, claiming that tarot cards originated in Egypt and were used for divination. The classic Rider-Waite Tarot is the best known Tarot deck. The vibrant cards, featuring full scenes with figures and symbols, were drawn in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith under direction of Arthur Edward Waite. On this week's episode of Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl my good friend Michelle Morgan looks into the cards to see what could be in my future. "Metaphysics Today: Soulful Conversations for Nourishing Your Spirit" hosted by Aeson Knight and Fire Fly invites listeners into a sanctuary of self-care where the essence of metaphysics is explored in today's context. Aeson Knight, with over two decades of metaphysical exploration, guides listeners on a profound journey alongside Fire Fly, also known as Hazel, whose deep immersion in divination enriches their discussions. Together, they bring spiritual leaders from across the globe to share wisdom and stories, offering listeners a chance to nourish their souls and embrace their inner depths. In "Exploring Tarot Reading Systems: A Comparative Analysis of Rider-Waite-Smith, White Snake, and Thoth," the article delves into the rich history and diverse interpretations of tarot cards. The Rider-Waite-Smith (RWS) Tarot, created by Pamela Colman Smith and A.E. Waite, stands as the most widely recognized deck in the Western world. Its illustrative imagery, structured symbolism, and intuitive interpretation make it accessible and versatile for practitioners of all levels. Contrasting this, the White Snake Tarot, crafted by Jessika Fancy, offers a contemporary interpretation, drawing from diverse cultural influences. Its eclectic imagery and emphasis on personal interpretation celebrate cultural diversity and emotional depth, inspiring creativity and introspection in readings. Finally, the Thoth Tarot, born from Aleister Crowley's esoteric philosophy and Lady Frieda Harris's visionary artwork, offers a profound journey into the subconscious and divine realms. With its esoteric symbolism, astrological correspondences, and Thelemic philosophy, the Thoth Tarot serves as a tool for spiritual transformation and inner alchemy. Each system—RWS, White Snake, and Thoth—brings unique strengths to the table, catering to different preferences and needs in divination and self-discovery. RWS excels in accessibility and tradition, while White Snake inspires creativity and personalization, and Thoth delves deep into esoteric symbolism and spiritual transformation. Together, they represent a rich tapestry of tarot's potential, offering seekers a diverse array of pathways to explore the mysteries of the soul. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pcspnetwork/message
This week we welcome back to the show Susan Wands, author of the Arcana Oracle Series. We're looking at the extraordinary lives of Florence Farr and Ellen Terry, two incredible women who broke all the rules of Victorian society. Divorce! Affairs! Illegitimate children! And best of all—careers! Ellen was an incredibly successful actress, and Florence was an artist and theater producer who became a high-ranking magician and head of the Golden Dawn. Not only did women like Ellen and Florence exist, but their lives were stranger (and better!) than fiction. We also discuss the possibility that Florence and Ellen inspired Pamela Colman Smith's High Priestess and Empress tarot cards. Susan's new book is High Priestess and Empress, and it's out May 14th.

Welcome to The Tarot Table, the podcast where we explore the mystical world of tarot, delve into the secrets of the cards, and talk about all things spiritual with a no-nonsense, no-BS lens. I'm your host, Miriam Rachel, psychic medium and tarot reader, author of Overcoming Echoism with Tarot: Using Tarot for Boundary Setting and Stopping People-Pleasing, and freelance writer. I am so glad you are here as you are listening to the pilot episode! What to Expect From the Tarot TableWhat will you expect from The Tarot Table? Well, I have a lot of cool stuff planned. You know you will get so many goods on tarot! Yes, I will sometimes talk about individual tarot cards, but not in order, and they will be randomly chosen based on significant events or life themes that are relevant at a time. So, I will not discuss all 78 cards for 78 weeks in their order. So, don't expect me to talk about the Fool next week, the Magician the week after, and so on. I will, however, be writing about that on my Substack soon, which I will announce at the end. I will also cover a lot of mystical content, in general, and I will constantly point out the problems with the New Age community, the harsh realities of spiritual bypassing, and toxic positivity. Oh yes, and I will also talk a lot about mental health! Because that is one topic that needs to come up often nowadays, the stigma of mental illness keeps getting smashed. Eventually, likely not long after the New Year, I will start interviewing awesome guests while tying their connection to the tarot card that best fits them! Like anything else, this podcast will evolve the way it is meant to evolve over time, which will be exciting to see!Now that I have that covered, why should you even listen to anything I say? Hey, you don't have to listen to a thing I say! That is your choice. Only know I am the Queen of Swords because I tell you how it is! I don't tell you what you want to hear. As I said, I only share a no-BS approach to spirituality. As someone who has faced a lot of scapegoating, bullying, and other trauma throughout most of my life, I have been forced to dig within and stop people-pleasing and become authentic. A Little About MeI came into this world with a lot of karma to balance, and I see that now, but the energy I came into this world was highly sensitive, and that is why I was a bully and scapegoating target. Because of that, I became an echoist, which is a pathological people-pleaser. I explain much of that in my book, but I did reach a point where I had no choice but to shed my echoism. And here I am, speaking the truth and calling out the BS that needs to be called out in the New Age community regarding societal problems. However, I have always been drawn to life's spiritual aspects and mysteries. After the birth of my daughter in 2002, I began learning astrology and tarot, and it all grew from there! In 2006, I received my astrology certification through Samuel F. Reynolds, who has an astrology school. However, I do fewer astrology readings today than I did back then. Though, at times, over the years, due to burnout and poor mental health, I did break from it, it is very much a part of me now. Now you know a little bit about what to expect with this podcast and a little bit about me, let's dig into the world of tarot! Since this is the pilot, let's go over the history! The History of TarotDid you know the tarot started in 15th-century Europe, mainly Italy and France? Theories suggest that tarot cards were initially used as playing cards in various card games. The earliest known tarot decks were hand-painted and consisted of four suits, similar to modern playing cards, with additional trump cards. These trump cards eventually evolved into the major arcana, the most recognizable and symbolic cards in a tarot deck. However, from their inception around the 17th century in France, tarot cards were used for divination purposes. It is believed that the cards were used by fortune-tellers and occult practitioners to gain insight into the future or to provide guidance and advice. In the late 18th century, tarot cards gained popularity among occultists and esoteric societies, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. These groups developed elaborate systems of interpretation and symbolism for the tarot cards, greatly influencing the modern understanding and use of tarot.During the 20th century, tarot cards became more widely known and used for divination and self-reflection. The Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, created by Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith in 1909, is one of today's most influential and widely used tarot decks. This deck introduced new imagery and symbolism, becoming standard in many tarot decks.Since then, tarot has continued to evolve and gain popularity, with countless variations and interpretations of the cards. I have my Penguin deck based on Rider-Waite, which I created in 2020 since I have always loved penguins. Today, tarot is widely used for self-reflection, personal growth, creativity, and divination by individuals from various spiritual and esoteric backgrounds. Now you have it! I will talk to you again next Friday. Don't forget to subscribe to my Substack! Follow me on Medium at msmir.medium.com, and check out my site at miriamreadstarot.com and my Instagram. Next week, I will discuss tarot cards with similar meanings but subtle differences, such as Lovers and Two of Cups! I will have you thinking of that one! Until then, ciao for now. Pamela Coleman Smith, nicknamed “Pixie,” was a British artist responsible for every single illustration on all seventy-eight cards of the A.E. Waite and Rider Tarot Deck. She was involved heavily in the 1920s Suffragist movement in London. She created many of the posters that were hung throughout the city to let women know where they were gathering, to meet and discuss their rights, where they could get together to support each other, and the Suffragist movement, and to push the government in the direction that they wanted them to go. Pamela was a very wild and super individualistic in a period in time where women didn't really have a lot of personality. She didn't care who looked at her, what they thought, how they interpreted her actions or her behaviors, because she was very eccentric, and she just wanted to define herself as the woman, the witch, the feminist, the suffragist, the lesbian, and the mixed race female that she was. Pamela illustrated over twenty books and she wrote and illustrated two books about Jamaican folklore as well as illustrated Bram Stroker's novel, The Lair of the White Worm. Today we looked at the four aces in tarot decks, using the line art from Pamela Colman Smith. The coloration of the art has been done by Gretchen Short. Each ace in the tarot represents a beginning, something new, or an abundance—even just the raw material. All card meanings change due to the nature of the question and the context in which they appear. Still, there are solid guidelines ALL cards must adhere to. Welcome to Weird Web Radio! This episode features the dynamic duo from Weiser Books who brought us a new way to see the Tarot Deck we all know and love! I'm speaking of Judika Illes and Kathryn Sky-Peck. That deck? These two came together and their inspiration to the Waite-Smith Deck that was created by the artist Pamela Coleman Smith. You will hear the history if this world changing Tarot Deck, why they were so inspired, and how they may have actually made the deck finally look the way Pamela wanted to see it. I highly recommend getting The Weiser Tarot deck! It's my favorite new way to see the Waite-Smith deck! Here are the Bios. First Judika: Born in New York City, Judika Illes is a lifelong lover, student, and practitioner of the magical arts. She is the author of numerous books devoted to magic spells, witchcraft, saints, spirits, and the paranormal including the best-selling Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells and Encyclopedia of Spirits. Her other books include Pure Magic: A Complete Course in Spellcasting, Magic When You Need It, Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, and Daily Magic, a perpetual calendar of spells, rituals, and feasts. Judika is also the curator of two books of occult fiction. Someday she will publish some occult fiction of her own. Judika is a certified aromatherapist and has been a professional tarot card reader since 1988. Judika has worked as an editor for Weiser Books since 2015. Before that, she worked for The Witches' Almanac. She teaches about spell-casting and other topics in the US, internationally, and virtually. Her website is under construction, but Judika is easily found on-line at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AuthorJudikaIlles Instagram: @judikailles and Twitter: @JudikaIlles And Now Kathryn: Kathryn Sky-Peck has been a life-long student of the esoteric arts. Currently Creative Director at Red Wheel/Weiser, she has been with Weiser books off and on since 1981 when she first began working with the publisher. She is an award-winning poet, a fine artist, and—when the grace of youth allowed it—a modern dancer. She sees all these art forms interconnected, finding color and movement in words and music in poetry. She has been the sole proprietor of Sky Peck Design for the last 27 years, where she maintains a select group of clients, most notably The Witches Almanac and Ibis Press. In her role as book development director at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she authored Who Has Seen the Wind? and The Poet's Delay, both compilations of poetry based on the museum's art collection. She loves the anonymity of being in the background, from where she's had the honor to work with, support, and learn from some of the occult world's best-known authors. Not a fan of social media, she lives at the edge of a New England wood with her cat Milo. Enjoy the Show! Stay Weird, my friends! Want to know what Judika and Kathryn talk about in the BONUS Audio?! Author Judika Illes and Researcher/Designer Kathryn Sky-Peck join me to discuss the reasons why the Rider-Waite-Smith deck needed a fresh look. From the publisher's website: The Weiser Tarot is a new edition of the most popular and influential Tarot art ever created, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, first published in 1909. The cards have been newly repainted—while, of course, preserving Pamela Colman Smith's original line art—creating a fresh, flowing aesthetic. Additionally, the cards provide Hebrew and astrological correspondences to the Major Arcana—not included in the original Rider-Waite-Smith deck—for those seekers who have interest in Qabalah and astrology. The Weiser Tarot was created to speak to your own personal Tarot needs and desires. Whether you are new to the Tarot or a seasoned card reader, you can use The Weiser Tarot for divination, fortune-telling, self-transformation, spellcasting, or any other purpose.
I am thrilled to have as my guest on the podcast, the female multi-disciplinary artist and educator Jamie Smith. The artist's visual expressions are an "engulfment" of her female experiences. ."Smith's monochromatic drawings, wooden wall-hanging sculptures, and installation work incorporate personal and culturally-resonant symbols in an attempt to reckon with the fragility of life, new beginnings, the passage of time and the depths of loss." .This episode focuses on her new passion project; design of Mother Time tarot card deck, inspired by the imagery of the Rider Waite Tarot. We're walking you thru a multi-episode exploration of the complete history of the Tarot (or at least what we know of it)! Playing card origins, erased Romani culture, occult misunderstandings, modern day innovations - we're weaving it all together to create the most comprehensive story that two self-described Tarot-nerds-turned-amateur-historians could ever hope to tell. CHAPTER ONE: Origins & Tarot de Marseille - Where and how did the Tarot come to be? What exactly do people mean when they talk about "traditional Tarot decks?" Who invented the Tarot de Marseille and why? We'll cover these foundational topics and more, including a discussion on the first artist to illustrate the pip cards (spoiler: it wasn't Pamela Colman Smith). In this episode Ariel talks about the power of tarot, its history and how the divination technique works. https://apple.news/Awy0lpBzwRzmr6ChYmvD7-A This article details the creation of the art of the Rider-Waite deck, an influential deck in the early 20th century that was actually designed by a woman, Pamela Colman Smith, who got no credit for her work. "Now, over 70 years after her death, the creator Pamela Colman Smith has been included in a new exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York highlighting many underappreciated artists of early 20th-century American modernism in addition to famous names like Georgia O'Keeffe and Louise Nevelson." This show at the Whitney Museum is curated by Barbara Haskell. She was interviewed and quoted for the article quoted, below. "Tarot has been around since early 15th-century Italy, spun off from traditional playing cards. The 78 cards are split into two groups called the Major and Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana features allegorical characters like the moon, sun, the fool and the lovers, while the Minor Arcana is divided into numbered and face cards in four suits: wands, swords, cups and pentacles. While prior decks were less pictorial in nature, Smith's is filled with lush imagery that makes their interpretation easier for the reader." Divination is an art, not a science. It also takes time to develop your ability to be divine. These cards empower your ability to intuitively sense the flow of energetic, spiritual, physical, emotional and archetypal influences in your life, and how they have manifested in your past, present or future. If you work with these cards regularly, their energy as well as the practice will assist you. It is important to clear the cards before and after each reading. Use the Violet Flame, Reiki, prayer, White Light, crystals, or any other preferred method. Set your intention before each reading, or portion of a reading. “Please let the cards tell us what we need to know in this situation, for the Highest Good for All.” Or, “Please give us insight into the people involved in this situation (name the situation.)” Or, “Where is this situation taking us?” Be as specific as you can. “Please tell us what we most need to know.” You can set the cards in specific locations to do a reading, and then you can also change their locations as you discuss options or suggestions to help a client address issues associated with a situation. This shifts energy when you do this. Remember that if you are doing a reading for yourself and you are attached to the outcome, it is important to do your best to release the attachment or have someone else do a reading for you so the information can be clear. Avoid doing readings if you are not clear energetically or emotionally. KEY TAKEAWAYS The art of the Tarot cards was done by a woman, Pamela Coleman Smith, who had synesthesia, which is a neurological condition that causes the person to see shapes and colours when they hear sounds. The art itself is from the symbolist tradition, influenced by English artist Aubrey Beardsley and the Pre-Raphaelites. They work with archetypes which all people can relate to, all of your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, influences and beliefs exist as energy patterns in your auric field. As you move through your life, the universe scans your energy and it knows what you’re thinking, feeling, believing, what you think is true, what’s coming to you, all of those things. It reads those energies so that when you hold a clear deck of tarot cards and you set the intention “please let me know what I need to for my highest good” your energies are read, and it selects the information that you need to know and shows you pictures of what’s happening using the images on the cards. You may not always understand what the cards are saying, you may have to let it settle in, sometimes you need have to let yourself know what it means a week later, because it could be reading what’s coming to you along your timeline, like a psychic, or what has come to you, or what you’re experiencing right now. People can have thoughts, beliefs, emotions, perceptions and then when they alter and change them, they can get a totally different result in their external life. That’s why a lot of people talk about using affirmations and changing your thoughts and belief systems to create or manifest different results in your life. It’s different from magical thinking. BEST MOMENTS “People who have lived with Christian influences are often told that divination, which is thousands of years old, is influenced by negative energies. That’s not true if you set the correct intention.” “Tarot cards can read events from your past, your present and your future provided that that’s what you set the intention for.” “It’s important to work with a skilled practitioner who’s energetically clear themselves. You can read the cards yourself, but you need to be unattached to the outcome to get more accurate information.” “Divination is an art not a science, obviously. It takes a long time to develop your divine ability to divine.” ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. In this episode, Jessica Dore discusses how tarot cards can be used as a psychological tool in creating meaning and finding connections in our lives. Jessica is a writer interested in meaning-making through symbol and image, with a special focus on Pamela Colman Smith's art in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. Her first book, Tarot for Change: Using the Cards for Self-Care, Acceptance and Growth (Penguin Life, 2021) is a set of reflections on the Tarot that draws from the fields of contemporary psychology and behavioral science, among others. It was called “generous, practical and gently radical” by The New York Times Book Review. Jessica's weekly newsletter, Offerings, braids together ideas from a range of fields including but not limited to psychology, philosophy, mythology, folk tales, religion, spirituality and social work with the images, characters and symbols from Smith's art in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot. Though Jessica hold a masters degree in social work and is licensed as a social worker in Pennsylvania, she does not consider herself a therapist. Prior to social work school, she worked several years in clinical psychology, self-help and behavioral science book publishing, where she spent time with the founders and developers of acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT. What she learned during that time informed much of what went into her book, Tarot for Change, and other writing. These days, she continues to study things that interest her: old stories—especially Mediterranean and western European—behavioral psychology, process and liberation theologies, poetry, ecology, growing vegetables, learning to ride a horse as an adult, and ceramics. She was born and raised on the north shore of Massachusetts and currently lives and work outside of Philadelphia on land that was cared for by the Lenape people for more than 10,000 years prior to European settlement.
