Today, I've something exciting to share with you. You know how you get excited when a lost Beatle or Nirvana track is found, well the extraordinary Alexi Boyd uncovered the audio of a panel discussion from Sydney Xerocon PreXerocon 2023. I honestly thought I'd never hear it again, and then mid March she sent me a copy - making me a very happy podcaster cause I get to share it with you. The panel discussion was held at the beautiful Hinchcliff House at Circular Quay. Unfortunately the room was a little noisy on the day of the event. However much to my surprise the audio quality is really quite good.     The topic for discussion was “Unravelling the future of AccounTech”.   If you are a regular listener you will know, I value bringing diversity to these tech conversations: The moderator Alexi Boyd ran a BAS and Bookkeeping business for 8 years. She is the Radio Show host of Small Biz Matters and now works in policy strategy and government relations. Her background led her to take the conversation in an interesting direction, consumer data rights and restrictions on data and innovation and the differences between data protection laws in Europe, UK, and Australia.   This event was the first time Sabby Gill, the new Dext formerly Receipt Bank CEO, had spoken in Australia. Sabby had literally just got off the plane. London based Sabby Gill brought an overseas perspective, as well as his 35 years in the UK technology sector. Aly Garrett is a modern, technology savvy accountant, from South Australia. She represented accountants, their small business clients, and living outside the major Australian cities, brought a regional perspective to the conversation.   Roger Gregg brought that unique energy that comes with being a Fintech founder, plus his expensive knowledge of the hospitality and brewing industry, which certainly flavoured the conversation.    I shall add in some recent relevant news, congratulations are in order, 10 months after recording this, it has been announced that the Access Group Has Entered Into an Agreement to Acquire Pioneering AP Automation Provider, Lightyear    Let me fill you in on a bit of a backstory. The Gregg brothers were one of the original App partners, with their solution InvitBox. I'm thinking within the first ten years? InvitBox won Xero emerging app partner in 2013. Then in May 2014 Intuit acquired InvitBox. The very blue boys turned green overnight. Several years later, in quite an unprecedented move, they bought InvitBox back from Intuit for a single dollar! And relaunched as LightYear.    Here we are ten years later, and they have sold again, this time to The Access Group.    Read more here: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7194623580830105601/  https://heathersmithsmallbusiness.com/2024/06/06/unravelling-the-future-of-accountech-sydney-xerocon-2023/ Contact details: Alexi Boyd https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexiboyd/  Small Biz Matters https://smallbizmatters.com.au/  Aly Garrett https://www.linkedin.com/in/alygarrett/  Sabby Gill https://www.linkedin.com/in/sabbygill/ Roger Gregg https://www.linkedin.com/in/rogergregg/  Accounting Apps newsletter: http://HeatherSmithAU.COM Accounting Apps Mastermind: https://www.facebook.com/groups/XeroMasterMind  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/HeatherSmithAU/  YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/ANISEConsulting  X: https://twitter.com/HeatherSmithAU

Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #236 Broadcast date: 4 June 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guests: Roger Gregg, Sabby Gill, Aly Garrett We all know that data, in the wrong hands can be destructive. But we also know the power of data to make us more efficient, save us time and the potential to make us better advisors and business owners. There's a tug of war going on right now. As small businesses, advisors and Fintech companies, how do we work together to simultaneously embrace data's potential and control its misuse? How do we take into account the needs of businesses and consumers and the advisors in the middle? And who owns the data anyway? In today's panel we unpacked all this and more including AI's impact on small businesses and software development and what Australian policy makers can learn from the rest of the world to resolve the issues around data privacy. We're lucky to have such an esteemed group of guests. Our expert panel consists of leaders in the fields of accounting and small business, Fintech Founders and renowned international software, data and AI policy experts. Roger Gregg - Hospitality leader and founder of software companies like LightYear Sabby Gill - CEO of Dext and Chair of the international Digital Leaders professional network, Aly Garrett FCA - All In Advisory Architect and Accounting Adventures Podcast host. This podcast was recorded back in 2023 at the Xero Mastermind Community Precon and co-hosted in collaboration with Heather Smith, Host of Accounting Apps podcast and international speaker on AccountTech. PEOPLE –  - How should or could advisors embrace AI to make their practices run more efficiently (yes we do include some good practical examples). What is the reality and do small businesses in different industries even have the time to implement AI and what happens to them if they get left behind? POLICY -   Potentially, we could be looking at more regulations placed on accountants and bookkeepers as government knee-jerk-reacts to community concerns. What will be the impact on advisors and clients if regulations tighten in data privacy with the number and severity of cyber attacks? PURPOSE -   The impact of CDR consumer data rights could have been disastrous for advisors and their clients; luckily we dodged a bullet here in Australia but it's a great example of how too much restriction can strangle innovation. From the perspective of those who rely heavily on data to function (the advisors and their clients) what would happen? Roger Gregg is a seasoned professional with a diverse background in management accounting, manufacturing, retail, fintech and hospitality. Born in Northern Ireland, prior to moving to Australia, Roger was involved in the manufacturing sector in Belfast, and was Chairman of the Northern Ireland Furniture Group. Then when he moved to Australia in 2007, Roger was recruited to be Director of Operations for Keystone Hospitality Group, taking the group to win the prestigious Australian Group Operator of the Year award in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  It was there that he saw (and felt) the need for Accounts Payable automation and in 2011 he co-founded the Accounts Payable tech start-up invitbox with his brother Chris.  Despite neither of them having any tech experience, invitbox was awarded Xero's Emerging App of the Year for Australia in 2013, just prior to being acquired by Intuit in 2014.  Building upon their previous success they founded Lightyear in 2018 to continue their mission of solving Accounts Payable headaches for SMEs. The company operates both domestically and internationally, with a staff of 60 offices in Belfast and Sydney, servicing 6,000 businesses across 22 countries. In addition to Lightyear, Roger is involved in a number of hospitality businesses as a partner in House Made Hospitality, as well as helping Bondi Brewing Company take it to the big guys. Aly Garrett FCA is a multi-award winning fellow chartered accountant, tax agent and podcast host (check out Aly & Andrew's All Aussie Accounting Adventures) who founded All In Advisory Pty Ltd in 2018. All In has won Boutique Firm and Start up Firm of the Year at Accountants Daily and are Xero Cloud Champions of the Year. Aly has worked in the accounting industry for 30 years, with big, small, traditional and innovative firms and everything in between and has helped many of them work through their digital journeys.  She knows the challenges and opportunities this can present and likes to use her experience to bring positive change in our accounting and bookkeeping communities. Sabby Gill was appointed CEO of Dext in October 2022 and brings more than 35years' experience in the technology sector, spanning sales, operations, development, support and customer service.  He has spent his career supporting businesses of all sizes with technology that looks to unlock their potential—both at home and in international markets. Prior to Dext, Sabby was CEO of Thomas International, which is a leading talent assessment and psychometric provider.  Other past roles also included UK & Ireland Managing Director of Sage, in addition to senior executive leadership roles at Epicor, IGT, HP, CA Technologies, Oracle, PeopleSoft and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).Sabby currently is a member of the UK's Digital Economy Council with Secretary of State, and the Chair of Digital Leaders Advisory Board, which has over 180,000 members across the UK. Roger Gregg, who wrote, produced, and directed, shines a bright light on our own world as he tells this story of the doomed people of Moloch. There are leaders that can't speak without a teleprompter, newspeople more concerned about their own appearance than news, and citizens that should be angry but aren't. Into this world, a messenger is sent to tell all of Moloch that they are doomed unless they change, and, since change is not an easy route, the harbinger is met with resistance. What he didn't't know at the time, is that during the same period he was also developing a Stage IV cancer that had spread to vital organs. Shooting and Cutting: A Survivor's Guide to Filmmaking and Other Diseases (his brand new book) alternates between the journey of Stephen's life-changing treatment, his renewed sense of purpose in current work projects and war-stories from twenty years of filmmaking. It's available in Easons and all good book stores and available online. The Hollywood Reporter described 'Noble' it as “a joyful and rousing affirmation of the human spirit which resounds widely,” and it is still among the highest-rated films on Amazon Prime. Nobel was shot in Vietnam and England, starring Deirdre O'Kane (IFTA Best Actress), Brendan Coyle, Liam Cunningham, Ruth Negga and Sarah Greene (IFTA Best Supporting Actress). Stephen wrote and directed his first film reaper in 1995. It was selected for competition at the Venice film festival and the same year he co-produced guiltrip (dir. Gerry Stembridge) which also screened at Venice. Stephen set up Temple Films with Oscar-nominated producer Ed Guiney and wrote and directed his first feature Sweety Barrett (1998) starring Brendan Gleeson, Liam Cunningham and Andy Serkis. It was selected for world cinema at Toronto film festival and official competition in San Sebastian. Stephen's second feature was the comedy-horror Boy Eats Girl (2005), starring Samantha Mumba and David Leon, which was briefly banned and then subsequently distributed worldwide, including by Lionsgate in the USA. Stephen has also directed three feature-length documentaries, many award-winning television programmes for RTE, TV3 and TG4, and stand-up comedy shows for Universal and EMI. Today RDR from the Vault launches a series of episodes highlighting Roger Gregg, playwright master of Dublin, Ireland.Roger pioneered his own audio sound, a wacky blend of Captain Beefheart sonic assault and an intimate, fine theatre sensibility. He produced for RTE - that’s the public radio of Ireland- for the better part of a decade and since parting ways with them has continued on mostly on stage but ocacsionally gracing us with an audio piece. What we’ll hear today is one of the latter types, from the post-RTE era of Roger’s work, done during his work as a theatre instructor at the Gaiety school of Acting in Ireland. This is “Heart of Morphine”Morgan O’Brien hangs in limbo between life and death, and finds the afterlife a much wilder place than he imagined. Confused, frustrated, and alone, he is forced to confront the reality of his actions made while alive. But is there still time to go back and change things?

This week on the show we welcome back the work of Roger Gregg with a piece created in cooperation with the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland. Well partner, it's a sad story of that Seany Boy, but when Audio Gothic arrived in the mail a few weeks back thanks to the generosity of Roger Gregg, I couldn't help but put my ears on it and reschedule everything to get it out on the show. This tale, referred to cleverly in “The […] The post Episode 61: Along the Dusty Trail with Crazy Dog appeared first on Radio Drama Revival.

After an amazing month playing The Last Harbinger, I had the absolute honor and pleasure of speaking to Roger Gregg, whose work with Crazy Dog Audio Theatre is about as original, compelling, and well-produced as it gets. In this discussion, we get to learn about the grit that drives him to write what he does […] The post Episode 34: Roger Gregg Speaks appeared first on Radio Drama Revival.

Episode #13Aired: 11/29/2005We may walk roads of darkness as well as light, but we spend most of our time drifting in shadow. Crazy Dog Audio Theatre has a proven track record of high-end sonic soundscapes, and this week on the Society we are pleased to present one of our favourites, "Gerry in the Dark Passage." The Dark Passage in this story is a video game, but it could easily be many other escapes that modern life affords. As we sit in our consumer-driven lifestyles most of our relationships are moderated around products. Stylized video games and songs, downloadable movies, and "cool" political rants- but do they really change the world, or even the way we think? Has humanity become as disposable as the products we've come to rely on? One thing is certain, each week we present audio gems that are from a rejuvinating art form, and here in the Society we love to create. Stand by in the intermission as we talk about the Consortium Comics project here in the Society, and later an interview with Roger Gregg from Crazy Dog. Our action packed meeting ends with one of the last episodes of our continual serial "Robots of the Company" by Dream Realm Enterprises... listen in to recognise a familiar voice or two.Crazy Dog Audio TheatreConsortium ComicsPromo: The SignalDream Realm Enterprises
