My guest in this episode is Dr. Roger Parrott, the President of Belhaven University for more than three decades. Over the years, he has thought much about the value of a college education, how higher education has changed, in some cases drastically, and the real cost of a college degree. I've invited him to share some of his wisdom with us.    In this podcast we discuss: How higher education has changed over the three decades he has been a university president The four “S” features most public universities use to recruit students The four “C” features that define most Christian universities The causes of recent trends in public higher education The spectrum of colleges and universities identifying as “Christian” The difference between Bible departments and religion departments and what it says about a college or university How to cut through the PR and fancy brochures when considering schools The two essential questions to ask to choose the school that is right for you Answering a common objection to Christian higher education The downside of requiring students to sign a statement of faith to be admitted The real costs of college and how to navigate the financial challenges The problem with “tuition resets” The importance of calculating living expenses, textbooks, and fees into the total cost of college Understanding good debt and bad debt How important graduate-level education is today The number one quality employers are looking for, and how the college years can help prepare you for this   Resources mentioned during our conversation: Roger Parrott, “The Real Cost of College: Insights of an Insider” Belhaven University

Episode Description: Sometimes, our long-term plans change, and we must adapt to lead by capturing the opportunities that come our way. This week, Bobby welcomes, Dr. Roger Parrott, the president of Belhaven University and author of Opportunity Leadership: Stop Planning and Start Getting Results. Roger shares his insights from 34 years of his role as a president in higher education to help us as leaders capture opportunities and trust in God's plan. As Christians, we are called to steward the opportunities, resources, and people that come our way. This is something that takes patience, and we may have to learn the skill of anticipatory waiting in the moment as we trust God for the future. This is a paradigm-shifting conversation that will challenge and encourage you in what may be a new way of leadership for many of us.   On this episode, Roger and Bobby will discuss: How “Opportunity Leadership” is Biblical and powerful. How Belhaven University shifted from long-range planning to focus on opportunities. Trusting in God's plan and timing to bring us to the destinations he has prepared for us. Shifting from long-range planning does not abdicate operational planning. Learning how to adapt to capture opportunity. Learning how to be patient in the process. The importance of empowering your people. Belhaven University's commitment to walking in truth and grace.   ____________________________________________________________ About the guest: Dr. Roger Parrott is one of America's most experienced university presidents, leading Belhaven University, a doctoral level institution, highly regarded as one of only 36 schools in the world working at the highest level of collegiate Arts programs. Belhaven was named in 2021 to “Best University to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Roger   was recognized as one of the “The 10 Most Visionary Education Leaders of 2021” by Education Magazine. He is the author of Opportunity Leadership: Stop Planning and Start Getting Results, and The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders.   Roger has been a sought after consultant to over 100 different ministries, and has experience serving on boards of international, national and local ministries and non-profits, as well as higher education leadership organizations.   About the host: Following a successful career as CEO, Bobby sold his business to a publicly-traded company.  In what he calls his "second half of life", Bobby seeks to pour Biblically-based principles into growth-minded business, church, and non-profit leaders.   Through Values-Driven Leadership, Bobby serves as an Executive Coach and Training Consultant for organizations.  He shares many of his principles and practices through a weekly blog, the True North Leader podcast, and through three books he has authored:   Principled Profits: Outward Success Is an Inside Job True North Business: A Leader's Guide to Extraordinary Growth and Impact The Freedom Paradox: Is Unbridled Freedom Dividing America?   Find out more at valuesdrivenculture.com

The second most listened to episodes in the nearly five years of this podcast is titled “Working for God or Working with God,” episode #205. A key insight there is that our work or our ministry is not so much something we do for God, and then hope for his blessing after the fact. Our work is a gracious collaboration with the God who initiates and is already at work. Today, I'm talking with Dr. Roger Parrott about his book Opportunity Leadership. In it, he makes what some leaders will consider a radical proposal: Many of our assumptions in long-range organizational planning are misguided. He wants to argue for a way of leading that is paying attention to opportunities God's Spirit is bringing across our paths now rather than projecting futures we can't possibly predict. Certainly Covid-19 showed us that long-range plans don't predict the future for any of our lives or our organizations. Dr. Roger Parrott is one of America's most experienced college presidents and was named among the 10 Most Visionary Education Leaders of 2021 by The Education Magazine. Dr. Parrott is a third-generation College president and was one of America's youngest college presidents first elected at age 34. Do you feel your organization's approach to strategic planning is inflexible and ineffective? Do you feel like you're missing untapped opportunities? Well, listen in as today's guest suggests a new counterintuitive approach to traditional planning, an approach that shows you how unexpected opportunities may be the key to your future success. There is a leadership adage that says, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” But what if there's a different paradigm of leadership that embraces the need to be flexible rather than strictly adhering to a plan? Certainly, the future we lead into will not look like the past, which impacts our ability to plan. Today's podcast might challenge our thinking and practices, but it will also give us insight into opportunities and possibilities that God brings our way.      I'm delighted to welcome Roger Parrott, who is the President of Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi. Roger has deep experience in leadership in college settings. He also is the author of several leadership books. Today we'll focus on what he calls Opportunity Leadership, based on his recent book by that title.   Find full show notes here: https://bit.ly/S7E25rogerparrott Share the love. Learn about opportunity leadership as Chris talks with Dr. Roger Parrott about the importance of working in unison with God and his plan, instead of being blindsided by one's ego. The two share experience on how they navigate their team and company through uncertainty. Dr. Parrott talks about Opportunity Leadership, urging leaders to stop overplanning and start believing in the process of God. Using the example of David slaying Goliath, Dr. Parrott explains that opportunity leaders do not expect success at first but are willing to adapt and change are always quick on their feet, and never dwell on any decisions. Starting as a Pastor, Dr. Parrott worked with the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization before serving as President at Belhaven for 33 years. He received an M.Ed in Education Administration and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at the University of Maryland. Dr. Parrott is also the author of The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders and his new book Opportunity Leadership: Stop Planning and Start Getting Results, is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Dr. Parrott is a third-generation College president and is helping to shape even more competent future leaders. After becoming president of Belhaven, Dr. Parrott had undertaken numerous leadership reforms to the university that helped solidify its position as a top Christian private Liberal Arts University. Belhaven offers all students undertaking dual degree programs a free fifth year and a free master's degree to all undergraduate students. Utilizing opportunity leadership, Belhaven had adjusted to social changes and unforeseen circumstances to generate impressive results, including its partnership with universities in China to offer master's degree programs, as well as its unplanned creative writing department that fostered Nobel writers such as Angie Thomas. Dr. Parrot explained, using a metaphor of a powerboat versus a sailboat. Instead of fighting the current stubbornly and blindly chasing one's desires, it is often faster to follow the current and appreciate wherever it will take us. Taking the Long View Dr. Roger Parrott pt 2 Each of us has a calling by God. Each of us has our own path we need to follow, designed by God. Each of us needs to understand that unique calling and strive to serve the Lord as best we can and to impact as many people with the Gospel as we can – no matter the calling. To help folks in fulfilling their calling, we often pursue higher education in the process. Our guest today is Dr. Roger Parrott, President of Belhaven University in Jackson, Mississippi, one of the fastest growing and most innovative colleges, serving over 5,000 students. Dr. Parrott was named among the 10 Most Visionary Education Leaders of 2021 by the Education Magazine. As one of the longest serving college presidents in America, Dr. Parrott is a fountain of knowledge for Christian parents and business leaders alike. He is also the author of a couple of books, the latest release is titled, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders.”) In your book, you discuss how, over the last 30 years or so, the expectation of business leaders has been short term profitability instead of the long term growth. You reference things like the dot-com bubble and the Mc-mansions that fueled the housing crisis. This type of short term success driven policies has even influenced ministries and churches, correct? I would venture to say that God had the “long term view” in mind when it came to spreading the Gospel around the world in the lead up for the return of the Lord. How can we, as ministry leaders, turn this ship around and refocus our teams on the long term rather than short term gains? Especially when the short term gains are usually the easiest to measure? In the opening to your book, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders,”)  you describe an idea for a new reality show. I loved the example. Would you care to share this idea with our listeners? Perhaps some Hollywood producer is listening… Well, Dr. Parrott, this is all so interesting. Your book, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders,”) how can someone obtain a copy of this book? Is it on Amazon? How can someone get in touch with you? I will put links to this down below in the show notes. Folks, this has been a great and insightful interview. We definitely need to shift our focus, especially our Christian outreach focus, from short term gains, though they are important – but we need to keep our main focus on the future. The long term gains. A smaller short term gain will allow us to lay that solid foundation for huge long term gains. No matter the area of concern we are looking at. I highly recommend Dr. Roger Parrott's book, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders”) to you. You can go down into the show notes and order your copy today. Do it right now, while you are thinking about it. In fact, this would make a great gift for your pastor or a Christian who is operating a business. Praise God. He is also the author of a couple of books, the latest release is titled, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders.”) First question I always ask is this. Other than that very brief information I just provided, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Roger Parrott?” Dr. Parrott, there are a couple of things I would like to talk with you about today. The first question I have, we see a lot of push going on right now in trying to provide free college for those that want to pursue further education. The reason is because graduating students are entering the workforce with a ton of student debt.  What is the reason college tuition costs are so high? Where would the money come from to pay the expenses if you cannot obtain the tuition from students? You are not only one of the longest serving college presidents, but you were also one of the youngest when you first started at about the ripe old age of 34, correct? How did you handle the job of leading faculty members who probably had been at the university for decades and you were probably younger than most of them? Again, in your book, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders,”) why did you write this book at this time in your career? I loved the part where you said that Toyota had implemented a long term plan over 50 years ago what is now being realized today: they surpassed GM and other US automakers. You also referenced that employees with the Japanese automakers are there for the long haul.  We have shifted away from the “30 years with a pension and a gold watch” standard here in America. Is it too late for the culture of this country to shift and embrace the long term approach to anything? But if there are changes that need to be implemented, how do you recommend a new leader proceed that would motivate the unofficial chain of command to accept the changes. Belhaven University is one of only 35 schools in the world that has earned accreditation in all four of the primary Arts – Theatre, Music, Visual Art and Dance. In addition, other majors of Creative Writing, Graphic Design, Arts Administration and Film Production. These things can be obtained at many colleges or universities. What is the value of a Christian college education? Why should parents – and, of course – students, consider a Christian University? Some people do not understand what that accreditation really means. Can you explain that for us please? In your book, https://amzn.to/3rHFGIa (“The Longview: Lasting Strategies for Rising Leaders,” )you discuss how, over the last 30 years or so, the expectation of business leaders has been short term profitability instead of the long term growth. You reference things like the dot-com bubble and the Mc-mansions that fueled the housing crisis. This type of short term success driven policies has even influenced ministries and churches, correct?
