In recent years, there's been a definitive uptick in tribalism, extremism, and extremist violence. But is the same true inside the church itself? Former counterterrorism official, Elizabeth Neumann, is back on the pod today to provide a fascinating look into the process of radicalization that has crept into evangelicalism. She starts by discussing “Trump loyalty tests” (a story worth the listen in and of itself!) and how Trump's demeanor and rhetoric may have influenced violence and extremism in Christian circles. She explains extremism and walks through the step-by-step process of radicalization. She details why she believes that far-right extremism is far more common than extremism on the far-left. Plus, how close is the average evangelical to extremism? How can we love someone who's trending toward radicalism and violence? Listen now! Please note: This episode was recorded before the assassination attempt against former President Trump last weekend. It contains honest, authentic criticism of President Trump's administration's policies from Republicans and former Republicans, including an expert who served in that administration. This criticism is based on the real outcomes of actual policies, and we think it's fair and important for our audience to hear it. This is how we address the differences in our political views. Violence is never a way to resolve our differences, political or otherwise. We deplore it. The events of July 13, 2024 underscore the central question we've been asking on this program: How can we do better at talking about politics and religion without killing each other or is it even possible? In this special edition, we provide comments by several prior guests of TP&R as well as a number of other leaders from both parties. We included statements from David French, Monica Guzman on behalf of Braver Angels, Fred Guttenberg, former Congressman Joe Walsh, Elizabeth Neumann, Pete Wehner, Mike Madrid, and former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, all of whom have appeared on this podcast. We also shared statements from former President George W. Bush, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, President Joe Biden, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer. There are other posts that are counterproductive at best, and arguably dangerous, from the likes of Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance, Tim Scott and MTG. These are referred to but are not worth giving any credence as we choose to focus on, as David French puts it, "recover(ing) our sense of decency and basic respect for the humanity of our opponents..." at such a time as this. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/07/09/opinion/thepoint?smid=url-share#trump-shooting-healing-america https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/trump-pennsylvania/679004/ We're on Patreon! Elizabeth Neumann served as the Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the Bush Administration, and came back to the White House again in 2017 to serve in the Trump Administration. Her job was to counter emerging right-wing extremism, fueled by long-standing anger, resentment, white supremacism, and Christian nationalism. By April 2020, she had resigned from the Trump Administration. Citing a failure of leadership and his imperiling of American security, she signed an August 2020 statement with 130 other Republican national security officials, boldly stating in no uncertain terms that Trump was unfit for office. In this episode, Elizabeth opens up about this experience, told in her recent book Kingdom of Rage: The Rise of Christian Extremism and the Path Back to Peace. As a person of Christian faith with over two decades of experience in public service and national security, she offers a fascinating inside take on the inattention to domestic terrorism; she elucidates the emergence of a new and Christian extremism, grounded in rage and willing to take violent action; she explains the Jan 6 attack through the perspective of homeland security; and she reflects on Christian resources for responding to the chaotic, politicized anger characterized in right-wing extremism and how we might act as instruments of peace.About Elizabeth NeumannElizabeth Neumann served as the Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during the Bush administration, and came back to the White House again in 2017 to serve in the Trump Administration, publicly resigning in 2020. Christian extremism is on the rise in the United States. Elizabeth Neumann joins us to talk about what is happening, why it's happening, and provides some pathways back to peace. She discusses how some churches have shifted away from Jesus' message of love towards a message of fear, grievance, and a desire to assert cultural power. She outlines the factors that have gotten us to this place like uncertainty, rapid social changes, and unmet needs for belonging and significance that can make people vulnerable to radicalization. However, the church can also provide healing and peace through community and finding significance in Christ. We talk about how the church can move back to the path of peace by centering Jesus rather than politics or culture wars. So join us to hear how the rise of Christian extremism came to be and for ways we can provide a path back to peace. America's rising domestic terrorism movement is not getting better it's getting worse. We have to look at ourselves, particularly if we're in the American Christian community, and realize something must be done to start seeding the ground for a different way of thinking. Which is why we're talking to former US security official and counterterrorism expert Elizabeth Neumann. Elizabeth served as the assistant Secretary for counter terrorism and threat prevention at the US Department of homeland security under President Donald Trump after starting her career in the George W. Bush White House. Now an ABC News contributor and chief strategy officer at Moonshot, Elizabeth has written the book ‘Kingdom of Rage: The Rise of Christian Extremism and the Path Back to Peace'. From 9/11 to 1/6; from growing up as a Christian to reckoning with the current state of the Evangelical church in America; Elizabeth Neumann, the former Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention at the US Department of Homeland Security, has the experience and has done the work to understand what's at stake in our country. So it was an honor to have her back on the program to discuss all this and more. Elizabeth Neumann had a first hand look at the inner workings of the Trump Administration. What's clear from her experience is that there were a lot of people who were hard working public servants doing their best to serve the country's interests while, at the same time, having to navigate the daily chaos that defined Trump's time in office. And Elizabeth certainly has an informed perspective, having also served in the George W. Bush Administration. (Spoiler Alert: Those 2 admins couldn't have been more different.) So we delve into the historic bookends of September 11th, 2001 and January 6th, 2021. We also candidly explore, as Christians, how so many of our friends from church have become radicalized; are sympathic to or are dismissive of acts of violent extremism; and some who have even participated in demonstrations of extremism. Most importantly, as the subtitle of Elizabeth's book indicates, we explore the path back to peace. For decades in its war on terror following 9/11 the U.S. government poured resources, including its own terror tactics, in combating Islamic radicalism during the rise of ISIS.
