Application to Admission

The better question is “do the college rankings consider Black families……” Regardless, affluent college educated Black families have very strong feelings about what kinds of colleges their children should attend and why. Does it have to be an Ivy or Ivy-adjacent school? Does the PWI have to have a certain percentage of Black students? Are my children “Black enough” to attend an HBCU?!!!   These are real questions that middle and upper-class Black people think about and Dr. Deborwah Faulk has taken the time to dissect this phenomena and give it light. As a Professor of Anthropology and Africana Studies at the University of Richmond, her 2023 scholarly research entitled College Choices, Choice Dilemmas: Black Advantaged Parents' Views of Their Children's College Options focuses on much of what we aim to examine in our book, The Black Family's Guide to College Admissions: A Conversation About Education, Parenting and Race. We were fortunate to interview this proud woman of Spelman who earned her doctorate at the The Ohio State University and share our thoughts as well as highlight hers.  Rankings, status, prestige and “what other people think” are woven into the fabric of American society. As Black people who make financial, cultural and educational choices for our children, we cannot ignore this fact.  Dr. Faulk gives voice to those who embrace this notion and those who want to challenge it. Her scholarship is novel and necessary. Learn something and let's discuss.

The spotlight was on Harvard and Yale Law Schools' decision to withdraw from the U.S. News and World Ranking Report. Joe discussed how these prestigious institutions believe the rankings are deeply flawed and unreliable, no longer reflecting the core commitments of the legal profession. Notably, Yale Law School, which had consistently held the top spot, decided to opt-out of the system.Joe highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding college ranking systems, emphasizing that they often fail to gauge the true quality of education or a school's suitability for individual students. The podcast stressed the importance of focusing on the right fit for students instead of fixating on rankings. Joe encouraged listeners to approach the college search with caution, conduct thorough research, and consider factors like academics, social aspects, and finances to make informed decisions about higher education. By recognizing the flaws in the ranking system and prioritizing personalized fit, students can choose colleges that align better with their unique needs and aspirations. Shocking factors that increase a school's US News and World Report college rank by 6.58 positions Rankings are long reports of all the best liberal arts colleges in the country. As a result, there is constant competition among parents and kids to get into these top schools. However, there are shocking issues around the calculations of the rankings that add to the common ideology of 63% of GenZ. So, I am exploring a new realm of Gen Z's infatuation with dissing institutions. And this is because I fall into the around 63% of Gen Z, who say, we are not so sure that college is a good thing or that the government bodies are working the way they should. In this episode, we shall explore begging questions that need to be answered on college rankings, and it's a shocking factor. What factors go into producing a study? Have you ever encountered a study and wondered how it came about? This is my natural reaction as a GenZ, but I hadn't questioned college rankings until I came across a shocking report. It reads, "Reed College, US News ranking dropped 54 places after they stopped sending their data to the US News World Report for best colleges in America." Now, what are the factors that go into producing the rankings or study? How is Reed College's report genuine to GenZ's College diss of a flawed ranking. Flawed Ranking; The US News World Rankings Every year, US News World Rankings sends out three surveys to three people at each school in a category. These three people are typically the president, the provost, and the head of admissions. They are to rank the schools, but it can play out in another horrific way, and the Media has a hand in it. However, our Generation can smell something fishy, Can't we? Is there Hope for this Generation? Students groups like the one at Reed will explore and ask questions. The complete idiocy of rankings based on numbers, wholly meaningless and biased, is being questioned. We're in the middle of a fundamental shift in our education, and we're only just at the beginning, and there's so much we can do to shift it. So stay tuned for that. Kindly ensure to follow us on TikTok and Instagram. We are going out on the street to find answers to germane questions if people use the skills they have? Are they getting the skills from other places? Or are they truly getting what they know and learn in their job from their degrees? Because the college institution is collapsing. Only one HBCU made the grade in U.S. News and World Report's overall rankings of top colleges and universities this week. But with metrics like SAT scores and high school class standings, some college leaders and education officials question the validity of the lists, despite their direct impact on how schools are managed and perceived.  We hear from Dr. Helene Gayle, president at Spelman College, which was ranked 51st in national liberal arts colleges and landed the top spot on their list of HBCUs. She discusses how schools could be measured more equitably, including social mobility and student progress within college, and explains why such rankings are still useful for education administrators like herself.

First: We've got the top headlines of the week: a national abortion ban on the table just weeks before the midterms, August inflation numbers (sigh), Ukraine's recent string of W's, and the DL on the new updates for iMessage.  Then: After a scandal at Columbia University, the college went from #2 to #18 on the US News College Ranking List. But after learning just how the list comes up with its rankings, many are questioning how legit that list even is. We break down what caused Columbia's fall from grace and the shady side of college-ranking culture…in 60 seconds.   Next: An investigation by The New York Times found that nearly one-fifth of Congress – or their family members – were trading stock in a way that could be considered a conflict, renewing convos around Congressional stock trading and whether it should be allowed. To hear both sides of the spicy debate, we talk to one of the reporters. PS: check out the Times investigation here.  Finally: Being mediocre at your hobbies is in. Chasing perfectionism is out.
