One of the most asked questions that I get, is about something which has already been covered on the podcast previously but perhaps needs a bit more context. Hermeticism is hard to get one's head around already, but what does somebody who calls themself a "Hermeticist" actually believe and more than that- what do they actually do? Taking us through this form of mysticism, and as a bonus, how Magical Timing can help your magic is my favourite person to talk to about Magic- The one and only Sam Block.
Sam Block joins me to explain why he possibly thought it was a good idea to start a weekly Kybalion discussion group on the Hermetic House of Life (HHoL). Sam is a moderator of HHoL and runs the Digital Ambler website, a blog about Hermeticism, magic, and the occult. This episode is based off of my recent YouTube video, The Nightmare of Hermes Trismegistus, but it includes the full interview with Sam instead of just the bits that made it into the video. Listen and enjoy! By the way, if you are interested in what to read instead of the Kybalion, I have an excellent reading list you should check out. “Block chains are basically an attempt to do a more efficient transaction by replacing trust with proof,” explains Sam Bizri, founder and CEO of Zeconomy. Until recently, transactions were committed via a trust-based bureaucratic system where watchdogs like banks and accountants acted as witnesses, providing a system of checks and balances in case anything fails. A blockchain, instead, is a ledger. It works on proof, using data that is 99.99% incapable of being corrupted, and giving millions of witnesses copies of the transaction, making it easier, cleaner, and able to better solve potential disputes. The problem, explains Sam, is that people are using the blockchain to make off-chain real-world transactions while still using the trust model, devaluing blockchain's efficiency of proof. Cryptocurrency answers this problem by doing on-chain business, but it has its own set of problems most notably stability, universally accepted legality, and intrinsic value. It seems blockchain value will increase when everyday people learn to value it, and when the trust system begins to trust blockchains to work the way they're meant to. Sam discusses the many solutions being developed to allow blockchains and cryptocurrency, including blockchain natives, and commercial paper, and what this all looks like in the real world at the consumer level. Quotes: “The idea is that if we can replace a lot of the trust mechanisms that we use in everyday commerce with proof mechanisms giving absolute proof of the data of transactions as much as we can obtain them, we can make things a lot easier to handle, a lot easier to process. (7:08-7:28 | Sam) “So now, I don't need five or six steps to do something. I can do it in one step. That's the promise of blockchains.” (8:21-8:29 | Sam) “Block chains are basically an attempt to do a more efficient transaction by replacing trust with proof.” (13:12-13:22 | Sam) “Depending on what your investment is, I think adding speed and efficiency on small transactions makes perfect sense. Adding more proof and immutability and focusing on that on large transactions is a must.” (43:52-44:09 | Sam) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926 Connect with Sam Bizri and Zeconomy:www.zeconomy.com Check out Sam's recommended learning: Sam very much recommends people read more in the genres of economics, statistics, and current events in geopolitics and the global economy. Here we are, at part six of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. We're over halfway done! I know it's been a weird ride, but hold on, because we haven't gotten to the strangest stuff yet. At this point in our exploration, we have developed a strong idea of Agrippa's world and some of the basic premises of Occult Philosophy. We have looked at history, the nature of light and the cosmos, and the mathematical underpinnings of Renaissance magic. Now it is time to finally explore one of the strangest and most exciting elements in Occult Philosophy: spirits! Discussion of spirits occurs throughout this enormous work, but if you want some reading to get into before listening to this episode, first re-read book 2, chapter 22, and then read book 2, chapters 55 through 57. Daemons, daimones, angels, demons, and intelligences—these are all words that describe spirits. Sometimes they are various categories of spirits, other times they are words for "spirit" in another language. From time to time, even the gods are referred to as spirits. In this episode, we explore why that is, and maybe we even look at some ideas surrounding how you can communicate with them. I warned you that we hadn't gotten to the strangest stuff yet! In episode 339 Sam Block joins the show to talk about the ancient philosophy of Hermeticism and its relationship to Hellenistic astrology. It represents a popular synthesis […]

Cheers! Super funny Sam Block on the podcast, chatting with Trish about growing up with a bunch of boys, getting into cooking, working on a cruise line, and why she started a TikTok channel. The two share a cocktail for the interview, share their dreams for the world (not really), and talk about food. And writing a cookbook. And being single.
Without a doubt, one moment that pretty much everyone is in agreement is absolutely seminal to the Occult, is when in 1471 Marcilio Ficino published the Corpus Hermeticum which he had recently translated. This triggered an explosion within Esoteric thought at the time, but also still right up to today. Finally, Hermeticism was something we could point a finger at and say that it was important. Since the publication, Hermeticism has had its ups and downs, but one thing is for sure- it is not going away any time soon. In this concluding episode, Erik Arneson and Sam Block go through Hermeticism over the last 600 years.
The return of this podcast's very first guest, Sam Block! This was another wonderful conversation, this time discussing grammatomancy (the art of divination using letters of an alphabet - in this case the ancient Greek alphabet and the oracle that uses those letters) as well as hermeticism, magic, and more. One word which gets used everywhere and almost as a substitute for Esoteric Thought and Philosophy- is Hermeticism. But what exactly is it and how did it come about? Is it a religion? A Philosophy? What was it all about? Our understanding of Hermeticism through time has changed vastly, much of the obscurity has been cleared up only within the last 100 years. In this, the first of a Two-Part series, I am joined by Erik Arneson and Sam Block to get to the bottom of the birth of Hermeticism and what it meant as it was originally conceived.
Nicholas Chapel is a Minneapolis-based ceremonial magician and professional hacker. He has been practicing magic for more than 20 years. While he graduated with a major in religious studies and a minor in philosophy, academia did not keep him; he landed instead in the world of IT, ultimately becoming a professional hacker on a cybersecurity red team. If his name seems familiar, it may be because he is the author of the well-known 2013 paper, “The Kybalion's New Clothes: An Early 20th Century Text's Dubious Association with Hermeticism,” which served as important source material for both Sam Block and me when writing our articles about the Kybalion. However, like the rest of us, Nicholas Chapel is not here to discuss the Kybalion; we are here to talk about real occultism. In this episode, we discuss the parallels between hacking and magic in several contexts. First, we look at the nature of hacking, malware, and information security from a magical context. Then, we dive into information in the occult, and how Trithemius, Agrippa, and other early modern magicians used cryptography and steganography in their work. Mr. R.A. Priddle joins me to explore the world of fraudulent ballooning magicians. No, not the Wizard of Oz, but rather Francis Barrett, author of that famous early 19th century tome of ritual magic, The Magus, or Celestial Intelligencer. Mr. Priddle, or Robert, as I usually call him, wrote his dissertation on Barrett and as I learned very quickly, it is actually not fair to label Barrett as fraudulent. He was instead a working, professional magician and teacher of magic, and his influential book was crucial for keeping alive many earlier occult secrets for later generations. Barrett led a life filled with interesting characters and dangerous adventures. He was an alchemist who experimented with hydrogen ballooning. He studied under Ebenezer Sibly, the 18th century astrologer famous for casting the natal chart for the United States of America. Barrett also attempted a translation of George von Welling’s massive tome, Opus Mago-cabbalisticum et Theosophicum. Barrett’s legacy is also impressive. He influenced Eliphas Levi and Edward Bulwer-Lytton, thus becoming a major contributor to the 19th century occult revival. In addition, a talisman drawn directly from The Magus was carried by none other than Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter-Day Saints (you know, the Mormons). I have a feeling that you will love this episode of the podcast. Mr. Priddle’s enthusiasm in exploring Francis Barrett’s life, work, and influence is infectuous. Barrett is an historical character worth examining, and I think you will agree that his work is worth a closer look. There is a good chance that you are already familiar with my guest on this episode. Sam Block, AKA @polyphanes, is the prolific genius behind the Digital Ambler, his blog covering a wide swath of esoteric and occult topics. Earlier this year, he took on the ambitious project of completing his own translation of the third book of the Corpus Hermeticum, the collection of classical philosophical texts that forms the core of Hermeticism. We begin this episode with a discussion about the nature of the Corpus Hermeticum and the Hermetica in general, and then we get into Sam’s project. We talk about his inspiration, the challenges of the translation, and what he learned through the experience. We discuss stories of creation in the Hermetica, how we use Hermetic concepts in our practices, and how to learn this stuff. This conversation ranges from the relaxed to the serious, from the frivolous to the deeply thoughtful. I am releasing it the week of Thanksgiving in the United States in the hopes that our conversation will add something special to everybody’s lazy holiday. Since 2011, my guest Sam Block, also known as Polyphanes, has written well over 1.5 Million words on his Blog, The Digital Ambler. Having found his work in late 2013, I loved his passion and process regarding such texts as the Corpus Hermeticum and the Greek Magical Papyri. In this episode of WMiT? I finally get to pick his brain about some of my favourite aspects of magic, his process and how he tackles such things as using Barbarous names, substituting ingredients, even prayer. The Magical Mindscape of Polyphanes is on full display.

Today on the show I’ve got the privilege of welcoming my friend Sam Block, with whom I became acquainted through Spooky Twitter, only to find out that he lives in my hometown, the forested wilds of Northern Virginia. Sam wears many hats; in addition to being a software developer, talented geomancer, and all-purpose magician, Sam is a prolific writer and has a robust online presence through his website, The Digital Ambler. He’s also a fully initiated priest in the Afro-Cuban spiritual tradition known as La Regla de Ocha Lucumí (also known as Santería). Today we’re talking spiritual lineage, sacred story, the ethics of magic, and the power of alternative spiritual practices and stories to shape the world for the better of all. Our conversation covers: a theory of magic (WHO IS SHE!?), the similarities between henosis in the Hermetic tradition and theosis in the Christian tradition, the role of the occult in shaping a healed world, the intricacies of being a white person in a non-white tradition, and several other stopping points along the way. An absolute joy of a conversation. Connect with Sam online at www.digitalambler.com and on Twitter @polyphanes. This week's bonus episode for Patreon subscribers (which will come out later this week) will be an introit into geomancy, with a live geomancy session!
