Liana's work focuses on Islamic esotericism and the occult sciences, with a special interest in the exchange of esoteric and occult knowledge between the Islamic and Latin inhabited lands. Her book The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2015. She is currently preparing a long-awaited critical translation from Arabic into English of the grimoire known as the Picatrix. A few of her research projects include the tenth-century secret brotherhood known as The Brethren of Purity, and the pseudo-Aristotelian Hermetica. She also worked as a project curator at the British Museum, deepening her interest in the material and artistic manifestations of the occult and the esoteric.Liana is a founding member of the European Network for the Study of Islam and Esotericism (ENSIE). Editorial roles include being a board member for Aries: Journal for the Study of Western Esotericism and Brill's Islamic Translation Series, and an associate editor of the journal Early Science and Medicine. In this interview, Liana speaks at length about Islamic Esotericism. This is an area of esoteric history that I haven't yet touched upon, so I was happy that Liana agreed to share her extensive knowledge on this topic. Some highlights of our discussion include: why the views and discourse of Islam within the area of “Western” esotericism is problematic; academic debates and disagreements in this area, how Liana defines Islamic esotericism, including paradigms and social orientations; and why the relationship between the idea of an eternal truth and the Islamic law raises anxiety in how Islamic esotericism is interpreted. Liana also discusses her research that deals with the 17th century Maltese inquisition, in particular the trial of Sellem the Moor, a Muslim enslaved person who was accused of being a magician. This work is part of a larger volume called Magic in Malta, and Liana examines this trial on three interconnected levels, and is a down-to-earth, practical example of how magic was being used by people at this time. Be sure to check out the program notes for links to all of the articles discussed in this episode. I hope you enjoy! At eight p.m this Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 the Hermetic Hour's host Poke Runyon will answer your call-in questions on our last show about European magus Franz Bardon. In between calls we will discuss the oldest, most famous (or infamous) of magical grimoires, "The Aim of the Sage", more popularly known as Picatrix" (Picatrix, not pick-up-sticks, and other books of dirty tricks!) This once forbidden tome ( at least in English ) is now available, translated from both the Arabic and the Latin medieval texts. We will discuss the Harranian Sabian contribution, and the Spanish connection--and if this sounds like Greek, it's that too. So tune in and find out how to get scorpions to sting themselves, and how to grow smart plants from human skulls, along with some profound Hermetic philosophy, and astrology that fights back.

On Thursday February 4th, 2021 - the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the 9th century Arab treatise on Stellar Rays by the Baghdad sage Abu Yusuf Al-Kindi. This work had a considerable influence on Medieval astrology and magick. Its influence continues to this day in the New Age astrology of Alice Bailey and in the revival of Picatrix an astrological magick grimoire from the 9th century that al-Kindi's work influenced. So if you want to find out where the mysterious Seven Rays came from, tune in and we will return to Baghdad in the days of the Arabian Nights.
On Thursday December 3rd, 2020 The Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will welcome V.H. Frater Suon, Michael Beeson, the host Wizard of YouTube and BitChute's "Hacking Fate" in a discussion of the 13th Century master astrologer Guido Bonatti and his significant contributions to Renaissance Astrology which is the practical philosophy behind Hermetic magick. So, if you want to want to make Picatrix work for you, tune in and take notes.
On Thursday March 12th, 2020 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review and discuss "The Grand Key of Solomon the King" (2009) and other works translated by Mamdouh Al Daye otherwise known as Nineveh Shadrach. Nineveh is a Golden Dawn adept whom we have known since 1998 when he sent us a copy of his first book "The Magical Tome of a Divine King;" this was also a Solomonic grimoire in Arabic called "The Medicine of Solomon" which was eventually pirated and became "The Book of Smokeless Fire." "The Grand Key of Solomon the King" is commonly referred to as "Al Ajnas" and is attributed to Asaph Ben Berechiam in the Ishtar Publishing edition, probably to help Solomonize the work. Arabic editions would be attributed to Asif ibn Barkhiya, an Arab version of the same legendary Jewish sage of Solomon's court who supposedly wrote the book. It dates back to the 12th century of the common era. Not quite as old as Picatrix but old enough to make it venerable on the magician's book shelf. I'll be joined by V.H.Frater SithMeth who has some thoughts on "The Book of Smokeless Fire." So if you would like to spend an hour in the study of forbidden and forgotten lore, sit on your magick carpet, rub your magick lamp and join us.

On Thursday October 25th, 2018 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the late Medieval astrologer magician Cecco d' Ascoli who was burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1327 a.d. for publishing books connecting astrology with magick, necromancy and demonology. In several ways he presaged the sad career of Giordano Bruno who went to the stake 273 years later in 1600 for a similar offense. Cecco expounded his magick on a geocentric universe model, whereas Bruno paganized (or demonized) a later Coperican universe. Cecco d' Ascoli may be considered the father of Solomonic ceremonial mirror magick. One of his most heretical revelations was a description of summoning (evoking) the demon "Floron", in a mirror of polished steel. Floron had fallen from the Order of Cherubim and served under the Goetic king Amaymon. Such a mirror was described in Picatrix and later depictions of it reveal that it was in fact a hand mirror. After Cecco's execution magicians no longer wrote of magick mirrors but their use continued until the present day. We will draw primarily from Lynn Thorndike's "History of Magic and Experimental Science", Volume 2 (1923) with current material from Christopher Warnock. So if you want to find out where this dark mirror magick got started, tune in and we'll pull another Italian magus out of the fire.
In this week's episode we conclude our series on Zodiacal Magick and finally discuss the secrets contained within one of the most important books of magick ever written, “The Picatrix.” While its English translation is only a few years old, the contents of The Picatrix has served as the definitive source for information about zodiacal magick and creating talismans for over a thousand years. Join us as we discuss the origins of Picatrix, who its author was, the philosophy contained therein, a spell to transform its user into animals and even turn invisible with nothing but a set of unethical, illegally sourced ingredients and a long list of complicated instructions. In the first part of our interview, Andrea and I discuss the complex issue regarding the definition of 'magic' within the Western historical study of esotericism and/or religion, and how we could perhaps see 'magic' as a meta-category containing 'family resemblances' or 'patterns of magicity' that allow for comparisons of different magical practices or attitudes. We also talk about the differences between the etic and emic perspectives of the term 'magic', as grimoires are concerned with the magicians' views and ideas about the rituals they perform and the significance these rituals hold. We then delve into the topic of legitimization of ritual magical practices within the context of Christianity from the 1200s-1500s. In this time period, most magical texts were considered heretical by the Church, forcing magicians to try to legitimize the use of these manuscripts. We look in particular at the views of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim and his attempts to restore the reputation of magic as a divine art. Our conversation then leads to different magical texts, focusing on the Liber Iuratus Honorii, or The Sworn Book of Honorius as it relates to Andrea's own research into ritual spaces. We also use Andrea's article to discuss these concepts in more detail, especially why space is such an important part of the magical ritual. Hear, golden Titan, whose eternal eye With matchless sight illumines all the sky. Native, unwearied in diffusing light, And to all eyes the object of delight: Lord of the Seasons, beaming light from far, Sonorous, dancing in thy four-yok'd car. With thy right hand the source of morning light, And with thy left the father of the night. Agile and vig'rous, venerable Sun, Fiery and bright around the heav'ns you run, Foe to the wicked, but the good man's guide, O'er all his steps propitious you preside. With various-sounding golden lyre 'tis thine To fill the world with harmony divine.

It's finally time for part seven of our exploration of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. In previous episodes, we have examined both the structure of Occult Philosophy and the worldview it attempts to explain. We are finally ready to take a closer look at one of the topics that this massive work is best known for: planetary and astrological magic! This episode will cover a lot of material from across book 2 of Occult Philosophy. If you are looking for sections to read before listening to this episode, I would suggest starting with book 2, chapter 29, and reading through chapter 50. You'll also want to read chapters 58 and 59, as I reference them specifically. However, after this episode, I believe you will want to spend some serious time studying all of book 2, especially going back over the parts about planets and spirits from earlier on. As we will discover, both planetary and astrological magic cover a wide range of practices that occultists of all varieties are likely familiar with. You will find sigils, prayers, petitions, spirits, and hymns. In fact, this type of magic also leans heavily on occult correspondences, which can include metals, stones, crystals, herbs, foods, and animals. And always remember, if you want to catch up with the rest of the Agrippa series, you can visit the home page for the series. Links Astral Magic by ɔ. Martiana at SARTRIX 36 Secrets with T. Here we are, at part six of our deep dive into Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy. We're over halfway done! I know it's been a weird ride, but hold on, because we haven't gotten to the strangest stuff yet. At this point in our exploration, we have developed a strong idea of Agrippa's world and some of the basic premises of Occult Philosophy. We have looked at history, the nature of light and the cosmos, and the mathematical underpinnings of Renaissance magic. Now it is time to finally explore one of the strangest and most exciting elements in Occult Philosophy: spirits! Discussion of spirits occurs throughout this enormous work, but if you want some reading to get into before listening to this episode, first re-read book 2, chapter 22, and then read book 2, chapters 55 through 57. Daemons, daimones, angels, demons, and intelligences—these are all words that describe spirits. As far as books of Magic throughout history, perhaps the most notorious of these is The Picatrix. Originally titled in Arabic as Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm or the Goal of the Wise, it is a very large tome of Talismanic and Astrological Magic which was likely originally composed in the 11th century. Hugely influential in the Renaissance, it has seen a recent surge in popularity in the last 20 years. Joining WMiT? for a discussion of all things Picatrix, is one of its translators and a leading force in Astrological Magic- Christopher Warnock.

My guest this Sunday is someone whose name might ring a bell with many of our listeners out there, it's author, practitioner, Lucumi initiate and astrologer Eric Purdue who just published a brand new translation of Agrippa's ‘Three Books of Occult Philosophy' in fall last year with Inner Traditions. Eric has been drawn to mythology, magic, astrology and occultism since his high school years and as a musician living in Chicago he had access to books on all subjects that interested him. However, ultimately a fellow band member pointed him into a direction that subsequently turned out to be spot on in giving him the phone number of a Lucumi practitioner who also happened to have a deep interest in Western Esoteric Traditions such as the Picatrix. At age 18, Eric met this teacher and got a crash course in possessions, séances and a lot more work that led him to become an initiate of this specific Lucumi tradition and it was also through this lineage that he received the recommendation to study astrology. However, being used to Lucumi divinational techniques which are usually very accurate, Eric was soon disappointed with modern astrology. Due to the fact that his interest in Golden Dawn style ceremonial magic had already receded he was trying to work with Agrippa's ‘Three Books' – which btw can't be overrated in terms of relevance – and he first focused on Christian astrology and then on traditional astrology. In our conversation Eric will take time to explain the main differences between modern and traditional astrology, we will talk about how Arabic influences managed to preserve a vast amount of knowledge, touch upon free will and the use of certain celestial objects, their pros and cons and a lot more. Of course, another main focus of this episode will be Eric's motivation that led him to pursue an 11 year long journey in order to translate and publish Agrippa's life work. In any discussion about the ‘Three Books' Agrippa himself can't be left out so we will also talk about his life and explore how he ultimately got away with the work he was doing despite of the inquisition at his heels. Another fascinating topic will be what exactly the (in)famous ‘Fourth Book' consists of and who might have authored it for real and we will also try to answer some further questions such as how to use the ‘Three Books' in practice and what they have to teach you which is actually far more than just doing magic. Eric Purdue's author page with Inner Traditions And this is a link to Eric's personal page Music played in this episode This week we present to you beautiful music from the 16th Century! Tempvs Fugit caused a sensation at the 2002 Calvi Festival of Polyphony. The group was singled out not only for its unusual vocal technique, but also for its innovative repertoire from the Nebbiu region, the result of research by the ethno-musicologist Corinne Bartolini, with harmonisations by Antoine Tramini. Their repertoire includes prayers for Holy Week, a 16th century Genoese processional song and the Vultum Tuum Mass, a Roman office from the very earliest times with a slight Byzantine touch, conceived as a depiction of the Virgin's face in sound. 1) VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS - L'ORME SANGUINE (Track starts at 8:36) 2) VELUM TEMPLI - VEXILLA REGIS - CHRISTUS VINCIT (Track starts at 56:39) 3) PERDONO (Track starts at 1:36:55) Intro and Outro Musicespecially written and recorded for the Thoth-Hermes Podcast by Chris Roberts
Is astrology a form of magic? In this episode, Christopher Chau (aka Chaustrologic) — an astrologer working in the Hellenistic and medieval traditions and crafting materia magica — delves deep into the heart of both practices with me in search of an answer. Topics covered: both of us being Scorpio suns with Gemini moons, essential dignity in action, the philosophies and spiritual frameworks behind astral magic, what it means to "live your astrology", and WTF is an antiscia!
For episode 89 we discuss one of the most infamous books ever penned in the Arabic language—indeed, one of the most infamous books in the history of Islam. Feared, banned, and burned, the Sun of Knowledge or Shams al-Maʿarif has nonetheless survived the vagaries of time to rise to prominence as the most famous Arabic grimoire. Today we are joined by Amina Inloes & J. M. Hamade to discuss their collaboration in translating the book into English (for the first time!) and illustrating The Sun of Knowledge along with a rich commentary for Revelore Press. Little is known about the author, Ahmad ibn ʿAli al-Buni (d. 1225 or 1232). His name suggests he was born in Buna now known as the Algerian city of Annaba. In any case what can be said is that the Sun of Knowledge is an authentic reflection of the Arabic esoteric tradition, which has been passed down throughout the ages under the spiritual aegis of a great master, and which today is the single most influential and comprehensive work in the Arabic occult tradition. In the show we discuss the mysteries of the letters. The secrets of Bismillah and its significance in Islam. The names Jesus Christ used to raise the dead. Talismans, Zar practices and the mysteries around Inspiration and the use of tonal sounds in practice. It's a wonderful, illuminating show and was a pleasure to record! In the Plus show the rich conversation continues with topics covering the Ring of Solomon, The Queen of Sheba and half Djinn people. How the Sun of Knowledge and the Picatrix sit together, the similarities and distinctions. We discuss in more detail the association between some letters and the lunar mansions. And we explore the Lunar mansions with their associated stars and from an astrological perspective. On Thursday December 1st, 2016, the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review the recently published compendium of manuscript translations dealing with the Homunculus, compiled and edited by Joseph Uncello from Four Hands Press, Viatorium and Ouroboros Press. This is one of the most remarkable books on alchemy and magick to have appeared since the release of Picatrix. We now have Paracelsus's own detailed accounts of the Homunculus operation. The creation of a humanoid being, using male sperm in an artificial female womb. This is followed by other Renaissance period authors elaborating on the process and presenting eyewitness accounts of successful Homunculi experiments. We are treated to works that seem to be the source material for The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosencrutz, the Tyrol experiment cited by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1908 novel "The Magician," and the little King and Queen created by Dr. Pretorious in the 1934 horror film "The Bride of Frankenstein." For comic relief we have an Arabic version of the operation using a sheep and a cow (without their consent) and for cultural diversity we are treated to a poetic Taoist perspective on the process, and for redeeming social value. We have a Valentinean Christian approach to making a Magical Child by the German philosopher Jacob Bohme, which may well have been the inspiration for Aleister Crowley's "Moon Child" -- So, If you want to delve into the dark secrets of creation, join us and we will open up the forbidden book: Codex Homunculi.
In this extra special episode, I will be interviewing two Tarot decks. I know what you are thinking: Tarot decks don't talk. But what if they could? Well, let's find out. My first guest this episode is an old and slightly crazy friend, my first edition copy of Robert M. Place's Alchemical Tarot. And after that, I'll be working with my second guest: the brand new Moonlit Hermit Tarot from J Swofford. I will be using a Tarot spread made specifically for interviewing Tarot decks. When some Tarot people get a new deck, one of the first things they do is an interview spread. This spread can supposedly help a reader forge a deeper connection with their divination tools. However, this might not be a very old tradition. The earliest example of one of these spreads that I was able to find on the Internet is from the Æclectic Tarot forum, in a 2010 post from a user called FireRaven. I have found a number of other spreads in various Tarot blogs and on other websites, but all of them seem to be derivative of the spread originally created by FireRaven. Here are the six basic questions from this spread: Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic? What are your strengths as a deck? What are your limits as a deck? What do you bring to the table? What are you here to teach me? How can I best learn from and collaborate with you? What is the potential outcome of our working relationship? The Alchemical Tarot I have a long history with this deck. I won it in a raffle back in 2003 or 2004. I knew I would win it before my name was drawn, which felt weird at the time. For many years it was my primary deck. I used it as a focus for Tarot meditation. When I started reading for others, I used this deck frequently. But very often, the readings were weird, uncanny, or strange. Sometimes strange things would happen while I was reading with this deck, so eventually, I stopped reading with it for others. If you want to hear one spooky story surrounding this deck, listen to the episode! And, spoiler alert, below is a photo of my reading. The Moonlit Hermit Tarot This brand new deck was just published earlier this year by J Swofford. It is based on the Tarot de Marseilles, which is a different system than I am used to. It has 78 cards like a standard Tarot deck, plus 4 cards that were originally meant to represent the Goetic kings: Oriens, Paymon, Amaymon, and Egyn. This deck is available in the Arnemancy Shop! I have only used it for a few test readings, so it is still very new to me. Will I need to turn to the Little White Book to interpret my interview reading? Listen to the episode and find out! Again, here is a photo of my reading. Links FireRaven's original forum post Join the Hermetic Agora Discord! Get the Moonlit Hermit Tarot by J Swofford Get the Alchemical Tarot, 5th Edition! On 25 July 1755, Giacomo Casanova—arguably the most famous libertine in Western history—was arrested for possession of illicit literature. Among the books authorities confiscated from his house were the Key of Solomon, the Zohar, and the devil-conjuring Picatrix. Early in his life, Casanova had attempted to enter the priesthood and he knew enough of Kabbalah to convince a senator and three of his occult-inclined friends that he possessed a secret numerological formula. And yet, in his autobiography, Casanova professed disdain for magical thinkers of all kinds, iterating at every opportunity the Enlightenment credo that one must only trust reason in answering life's many questions and quandaries. How can a man be both a magician and a disbeliever in magic?

Okay, stay with me here. You are going to have to hear this one to believe it, because my guest on this episode is Alexander Eth. That name is probably familiar, because Alexander is the host of the esoteric Glitch Bottle podcast, which covers topics we are all curious about: magic, mysticism, grimoires, necromancy, and other mysteries of our weird universe. Alexander is a classical ceremonial magician and researcher into grimoires. Did wizards just make all of this up? Alexander and I talk about the modern renaissance of grimoire magic and what he’s learned from all of the amazing magicians, researchers, scholars, and translators he has talked to. Is there technology to trace? How much of it is innovation? I have been waiting for so long to have this conversation, and Alexander’s insights are fascinating. In exploring this subject, we will discuss many of your favorite grimoires, well-known magicians both modern and historical, and a number of popular techniques. We discuss ritual implements, the history of such implements, and along the way we reveal that Alexander’s mind is a vast and impressive encyclopedia of magical goodies. We also talk a lot about the nature of spirits. What are they? Why can we talk to them? How can we do it better? Why does it work in so many different ways? We ask these questions and then we absolutely try to answer them! As a bonus at the end of the episode, Alexander and I share our pro tips on organizing podcast playlists. How can you spare your brain? Well, listen to the end and find out. Anyhow, you can tell from the description, I suppose, that the episode had to be a long one. On Thursday December 19th, 2013 The Hermetic Hour, with host Poke Runyon, will have as its distinguished guest the noted author on subjects arcane and esoteric, John Michael Greer. John's first book "Paths of Wisdom" has been of considerable help to us as an authoritative source in our on-going series of lectures on the Hermetic-Qabalistic Tree of Life. John is also the translator of the medieval Latin version of "Picatrix", with Christopher Warnock, which has now become as important in the magical revival as Tyson's Agrippa. Although certainly a Hermetic scholar John Michael Greer's magical heart lies in the Celtic-Druidic tradition. He has written several books in this area and is a practicing Druid himself. His latest work combines the Hermetic Golden Dawn and the Druidic traditions, both of which were active in Victorian England. John discovered a historic interchange between these two very British expressions and he has lovingly reconstructed the synthesis in "The Celtic Golden Dawn," -- So, let us go out to Stone Henge and see how the Druids do a Pentagram Ritual.
On Thursday July 18th, 2013 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the history and the use of the Dark Mirror in Medieval and Renaissance ritual magick. We will focus on historical accounts from Lynn Thorndike's "History of Magic and Experimental Science", the Latin "Picatrix", and passages from grimoires such as "The Grimorium Verum" and "St. Cyprian," and the kabbalistic "Ispaklaria" described by the late Aryeh Kaplan, along with references from folkloric sources and the" Saragossa Manuscript." Modern use by P. B. Randolph, Franz Bardon and Joseph Lisiewiski will be examined. This is a controversial subject among some contemporary Renaissance Magick reenactors who use crystals for both evocation and invocation. We will attempt to sort this out so the newcomer to the Art will have a better understanding of the full range of magical equipment and technique. So, tune in and go through "The Looking Glass."
At eight p.m this Thursday 2010 the Hermetic Hour's host Poke Runyon will answer your call-in questions on our last show about European magus Franz Bardon.
The Hermetic Hour for July 5th, 2012 will feature a discussion by host Poke Runyon on the "Magick of the Arabian Nights" or Alf Laya wa Laya as Crowley liked to call it, referring to Richard Burton's annotated translation. Actually the magick in Burton's version is mostly in the footnotes, but there is one specific tale which outlines the whole scheme of Muslim magical "Abjad," which is a Western term for Arab Qabalah. We will discuss that tale -- you'll have to listen to learn which story has the mystic juice -- and we will then move on to the King Solomon (Suliman) legends, the nature and hierarchy of the Jinn, the Turkish version of the Masonic third degree, the North Sabian (Harranian) contribution, Sufi methods and teachings, and the legacy of Picatrix -- so, if you want to get the gen on the Jinn, tune in and we'll open sesame for you.
