It is time for us to advance our knowledge of the Hermetica and one cool place to start is the Poemander or the Divine Pymander.This amazing piece of writing Hermes tells of speaking with the Mind of God and you follow a conversation he has with the creator. This writing has an energetic component, the mere process of reading or listening to it seems to awaken long lost portions of your inner power and genius. I wonder if these older texts went far beyond histories into the realm of tranformation. Hermes was a man who lived and breathed on this planet, centuries before Moses, in the land of Egypt. It is supposed that he was a king of Egypt, before the inclusion of the Pharaoh, and he was the teacher of all the spiritual Masters that lived. Not only that, but he was the teacher of Gods. And so, some time after his death, he was deified by the Egyptians and the Greeks. In Greek Mythology he is known to hold many roles. From Wikipedia, we read the following in relation to those roles: “He protects and takes care of all the travelers, miscreants, harlots, old crones and thieves that pray to him or cross his path. He is the messenger of the gods and does his job very well. He is athletic and is always looking out for runners, or any athletes with injuries who need his help. Hermes is a messenger from the gods to humans, sharing this role with Iris. An interpreter who bridges the boundaries with strangers is a hermeneus. Hermes gives us our word “hermeneutics” for the art of interpreting hidden meaning. In Greek a lucky find was a hermaion. Hermes delivered messages from Olympus to the mortal world. He wears shoes with wings on them and uses them to fly freely between the mortal and immortal world. Hermes, younger than Apollo, was the youngest of the Olympian gods. “Hermes, as an inventor of fire, is a parallel of the Titan, Prometheus. In addition to the syrinx and the lyre, Hermes was believed to have invented many types of racing and the sport of wrestling, and therefore was a patron of athletes. 

The Hermetica are texts attributed to the Legendary figure Hermes Trismegistus, known both as of the Greek God Hermes and the Egyptian God Thoth. This is a reading by Graham Hancock known as "Thoth's Prophecy". Many of these texts can go back as far as the second or third century BCE.

Hermetic writings, works of revelation on occult, theological, and philosophical subjects ascribed to the Egyptian god Thoth (Greek Hermes Trismegistos [Hermes the Thrice-Greatest]), who was believed to be the inventor of writing and the patron of all the arts dependent on writing. The collection, written in Greek and Latin, probably dates from the middle of the 1st to the end of the 3rd century ad. It was written in the form of Platonic dialogues and falls into two main classes: “popular” Hermetism, which deals with astrology and the other occult sciences; and “learned” Hermetism, which is concerned with theology and philosophy. Both seem to have arisen in the complex Greco-Egyptian culture of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.From the Renaissance until the end of the 19th century, popular Hermetic literature received little scholarly attention. More recent study, however, has shown that its development preceded that of learned Hermetism and that it reflects ideas and beliefs that were widely held in the early Roman Empire and are therefore significant for the religious and intellectual history of the time.In the Hellenistic age there was a growing distrust of traditional Greek rationalism and a breaking down of the distinction between science and religion. Hermes-Thoth was but one of the gods and prophets (chiefly Oriental) to whom people turned for a divinely revealed wisdom.In this period the works ascribed to Hermes Trismegistos were primarily on astrology; to these were later added treatises on medicine, alchemy (Tabula Smaragdina [“Emerald Tablet”], a favourite source for medieval alchemists), and magic. The underlying concept of astrology—that the cosmos constituted a unity and that all parts of it were interdependent—was basic also to the other occult sciences. To make this principle effective in practice (and Hermetic “science” was intensely utilitarian), it was necessary to know the laws of sympathy and antipathy by which the parts of the universe were related. But because these assumed affinities did not, in fact, exist and hence could not be discovered by ordinary scientific methods, recourse had to be made to divine revelation. The aim of Hermetism, like that of Gnosticism (a contemporary religious-philosophical movement), was the deification or rebirth of mortals through the knowledge (gnosis) of the one transcendent God, the world, and humankind.The theological writings are represented chiefly by the 17 treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum, by extensive fragments in the Anthologion (Anthology) of Stobaeus, and by a Latin translation of the Asclepius, preserved among the works of Apuleius. Though the setting of these is Egyptian, the philosophy is Greek. The Hermetic writings, in fact, present a fusion of Eastern religious elements with Platonic, Stoic, and Neo-Pythagorean philosophies. It is unlikely, however, that there was any well-defined Hermetic community, or “church.”Hermetism was extensively cultivated by the Arabs, and through them it reached and influenced the West. Interestingly, various religious doctrines have urged me to seek God in the Old Testament, in Jesus, and in celestial signs. At first, these paths seemed unproductive… or perhaps they held more than I initially realized. Chapter 5 of the Hermetica, titled "The Living Cosmos," explores the idea that the universe is a living, conscious entity. 1. The Universe as a Living Being The text describes the cosmos as a great living being, animated by a divine spirit. This being is intelligent, aware, and capable of interacting with itself and its parts. Everything within the universe is interconnected, and nothing exists in isolation. Each part of the cosmos has its own role and purpose, contributing to the harmony and balance of the whole. 2. Divine Mind and Soul The universe is governed by the Divine Mind (Nous), which is the source of all wisdom and knowledge. The Divine Mind infuses the cosmos with its essence, giving rise to the soul of the universe. The soul of the universe is responsible for its movement and life. It permeates every aspect of the cosmos, from the largest celestial bodies to the smallest particles. 3. Correspondence and Unity The principle of correspondence is emphasized, suggesting that what happens on a small scale (microcosm) reflects what happens on a large scale (macrocosm). This idea is encapsulated in the famous Hermetic maxim: "As above, so below." This unity and correspondence imply that the divine order is reflected throughout the entire cosmos, from the stars to human beings. 4. Interconnectedness and Sympathy The cosmos operates through a system of sympathy and antipathy, where all parts influence each other. This interconnectedness means that changes in one part of the cosmos can have ripple effects throughout the whole. Understanding these connections allows one to grasp the deeper truths of the universe and align oneself with its divine order. 5. Human Role in the Cosmos Humans are seen as a microcosm of the universe, containing within themselves the same elements and principles that govern the cosmos. This places humans in a unique position to understand and interact with the divine. By aligning themselves with the cosmic order and living in harmony with the divine principles, humans can achieve spiritual enlightenment and a deeper connection with the cosmos. 6. Divine Providence and Fate The chapter discusses the concepts of divine providence and fate, suggesting that the universe operates according to a divine plan. This plan is both orderly and purposeful, ensuring the continued harmony and balance of the cosmos. Fate is seen as the mechanism by which divine providence unfolds, guiding the events and experiences within the universe according to the divine will. "The Living Cosmos" in the Hermetica invites readers to view the universe as a living, breathing entity, interconnected and governed by divine intelligence. In this episode I channeled the goddess Artemis to discuss the divine feminine, retelling the ancient stories of the goddess, and fears of connecting to the goddess realm. Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, and of chastity and childbirth. She was identified by the Romans with Diana. Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo. She was a skilled archer and a fierce protector of her forest domain. Artemis was one of the most popular goddesses in Greek mythology. She was often depicted as a beautiful young woman with a bow and arrow, accompanied by a pack of hunting dogs. She was known for her independence, her strength, and her love of the wild. Here are some of the things Artemis was known for: Her skill as a hunter: Artemis was a skilled archer and huntress. She was able to kill any animal with a single arrow. Her love of the wild: Artemis loved the wilderness and spent most of her time in the forest. She was known to protect wild animals from harm. Her independence: Artemis was a fiercely independent goddess. She did not want to marry or have children. She preferred to remain a virgin and devote herself to her hunting and other pursuits. Her protection of women and girls: Artemis was a protector of women and girls. She was often invoked for help in times of danger or distress. Her role in childbirth: Artemis was also associated with childbirth. She was sometimes called upon to assist women in labor. Artemis was a complex and multifaceted goddess who was revered by many. She was a symbol of strength, independence, and the beauty of the natural world. She continues to be a popular figure in mythology and art today. In this episode Hermes as Hermes Trismegistus dropped in for a quick discussion. Hermes Trismegistus, also known as "Hermes the Thrice-Great," was a legendary figure of Hellenistic Egypt who was considered to be the founder of alchemy, astrology, and other occult sciences. He was syncretized with the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek god Hermes, combining their attributes and symbolism. Hermes Trismegistus was said to have lived during the time of Moses and was believed to be a great sage, philosopher, and priest-king. He was credited with writing a vast corpus of works on various subjects, including philosophy, theology, alchemy, and astrology. These works, known as the Hermetica, were highly influential in the development of Western mysticism and occult traditions. The true identity of Hermes Trismegistus is unknown, and there is no historical evidence to support his existence as a real person. Well, it's all over the place. We discuss many of the figures who appear in the book, like the dubious but charming Carlos Castaneda, Anthroposophy founder Rudolph Steiner, and Theosophy's grand dame H.P. Blavatsky, featured here alongside figures like Aleister Crowley, Carl Jung, Anton LaVey, and Jack Parsons, the pioneering father of modern rocketry—who was also a practicing magician, one-time Marxist, and famously died at 37 in a fiery explosion. Beyond that, we get into notions of radical self-reliance via Ayn Rand and comics artist Steve Ditko, UFOs, and the necessary path of following one's own innate proclivities. Arthur Miller once said something along the lines of, “An era can be said to end when its basic illusions are exhausted.” Perhaps that's at the core of this chat: in our hyper-individualized moment, with so many of the old ways breaking down around us, how we can think about the communal and the individual in less binary or dualistic terms? It was my pleasure to speak with Prof. Dr. Wouter Hanegraaff about his new book, Hermetic Spirituality and the Historical Imagination: Altered States of Knowledge in Late Antiquity.
