Lisa Kristine is an American humanitarian photographer, activist and speaker. Through her powerful pictures, she raises worldwide the awareness about the dignity and respect of indigenous peoples and the lives of slaves. Her photography has effectively documented indigenous cultures and social causes, including modern-day slavery in particular, in more than 100 countries. I first encountered her impressive work in 2013 at her gallery in Samona, California. When I entered her gallery I stood transfixed in front of the photo of five-year-old Kofi, a child slave from Africa. For several minutes I had to cry, although at that time I did not even know what this picture was really expressing. Since early childhood, Lisa has been living her passion and using her talent for a cause of the utmost importance. Her work has won her various international awards, she delivered TED Talks, and has been honored by the Pope himself. Lisa lives her purpose from the bottom of her heart and thus her unique legacy for the good of humanity. In our podcast, we talk about how she found her purpose how she finds the courage to follow her call, despite risks, to raise awareness for the dignity and justice of more than 50 million slaves how she descends into 300-meter-deep shafts to document the work of slaves in mines what her vision is what her foundation aims to achieve More information about Lisa Kristine and her impressive pictures at https://lisakristine.com/.

In this episode of Beyond the Meter, host John Failla is joined by three Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions team members. Mark Adams is the Business Development Manager, Mike York is the Strategic Account Manager, and Wayne Johnson is the Key Segment Manager for Education. These experienced executives walk through practical steps toward gaining approval for resiliency projects. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Understanding the project [02:21] Making the business case for a project [05:59] The “Money Authority Need” concept [10:14] Barriers to communication [15:21] The DISC profile [20:34] Building consensus [24:03] Risk-adjusted cost [30:22] Before the C-suite meeting [39:58] Making the business case Achieving internal buy-in for energy managers is a common challenge. Many projects miss the mark on this critical first step in making the business case for a project. Fully understanding the project, need, and goal will lead to precisely what's necessary for a project to achieve that goal. Starting with the end in mind and understanding the process will direct how the project is communicated. Everyone has different communication styles, so choosing the right person to present varies by initiative. Typically, engineers can speak to engineers and do a reasonably good job communicating with finance. Still, many engineers would find it a challenge to translate an initiative into business results and talk to executives. The presentation must be succinct, with further data ready for when there are deeper questions. The goal is to give people the information they need to make a reasonable decision and not drown them in detail and minutiae. With data, details can become muddled in the impact, degrading the target outcome's importance. Begin with consensus The default starting point for many projects has been receiving approval from finance. However, finance tends to wait to follow after the authority has expressed initial interest. At that time, a higher priority is placed on the project, and the project will receive more support. The entry point has to be with the individual with the need. Finance tends to look for a simple payback or some framework that may not apply well regarding the replacement of assets. The presenter will need to present the initiative in such a way as to anticipate and overcome objections. Finance finds comfort in consensus. If approached with a project that already has people from various departments working together to push it forward, finance is much more likely to join. Finance will need cost comparisons, asset lift management expectations, and expenses. Anticipating these questions means knowing the people in finance and how they communicate. Consider the wider audience When proposing a project to your business, the decision-makers are the primary audience. Often overlooked are the people who don't have the authority to approve a project yet affect how the project proposal is received. Considering these different perspectives and bringing them on board is crucial in making the business case for a project. Success is unlikely if a solution doesn't receive support from the engineering, facilities, and finance departments. This concept applies in other industries as well. In education, the sustainability officer doesn't typically have much money to spend or authority to leverage but is influential in the process. Being attuned to the broader audience will help gain the project's approval and its overall success. Researchers with the best of intentions still get things wrong. “Who made you the expert” is a valid question that research subjects might ask… and frankly, they're right to ask that. If you're, say, a drug user in Vancouver's downtown east side you probably don't want some guy from Harvard telling you what paternalistic research he's doing on you. You want to be a partner in research done with you. So what does it look like when the old paternalistic ways are dispensed of? Garth Mullins hosts Crackdown, a podcast about the drug war in Vancouver covered by the drug users themselves. Gordon talks to him about being the researcher and the researched in the downtown east side, a place where activists and academics have come together to develop better methods. We also talk to Michelle Fine of City University of New York. She's a leading proponent of “critical participatory action research“. That's a way of researching that de-centres the academic. We find out the theory, and what that means for expertise more broadly. Special thanks to Samona Marsh, one of the authors of Research 101: A process for developing local guidelines for ethical research in heavily researched communities, and also to Liz Dozier of Chicago Beyond. Samona Whiteside is a contemporary singer with incredible sounds that you can hear on spotify, youtube, reverbnation and many more online channels – and all of her songs have thousands and sometimes tens of thousands of plays. As a multi-talented and modern gospel vocalist and singer, when I first heard her music I was just blown away. I wasn't expecting such nuance, within an intimate, yet powerful way of singing, while still honoring her roots in the gospel tradition in exciting ways. Samona makes music that is thoughtful, conscious and driven by the desire to inspire, comfort and spread love and joy to all those that hear it. Join us as host Megan Morgan interviews Samona where they talk about music, being a wife and mother, and how she uses her voice and her music as a vehicle to express her perspectives and tell stories. The beginning and end of the episode feature her songs, so it's a special treat for listeners. Her overarching ambition is to encourage and motivate people, pushing the boundaries of our perception as to what music, devotion and particularly what gospel music can be. Samona believes that music may not change the world, but that it can certainly change people, in the world. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/megan-morgan1/support

Attualmente vive a Parigi, dove scrive, traduce, insegna…

When life just seems like it can’t get any worse, it’s almost instinct to just give up and let life happen to you. There’s a feeling of depression that can creep in, and a sense of helplessness can paralyze you if you let it. It takes a lot to press-on and take back your life, but you can do it! After spending years in a home where her father was abusive to her and her mother, and then losing her leg in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, Rebekah Gregory could have given up and decided to be satisfied with her life that seemed like it would always be going from one tragedy to the next. Instead, she stood in the face of adversity and decided to take her life back!
