S10 E199: “Will The Report Change Anything?”: Dr. Angela Byers-Winston and Ray Allen Discuss Systemic Change For The Black Experience On A University Campus

Dr. Gee returns to the discussion of his involvement in a university report on the Black Community Experience at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In episode 188 he discussed the upcoming report with UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and now that the report is public, he is joined by fellow board members on the ad hoc committee. Dr. Angela Byers-Winston and Ray Allen discuss the difference between good intentions and intentionality, when it comes to identifying and creating real change? The ad hoc study group worked to present their critical findings and strategic recommendations aimed at addressing the long-standing challenges faced by Black students, faculty, and staff on university campus. They discuss the question, “What is the systemic inertia to follow through on the recommendations?” Hear the unfiltered conversation about the report conducted by the UW by those that served on the board. All three speak honestly about the process, offering what made them angry or frustrated, and the hopes they have for change. They talk about how creating programs only can't change the DEI issues, but it takes institutional and organizational change. Also, be sure to catch a double portion of the Black Ice Breakers segment. Dr. Angela Byars-Winston is a tenured faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine. She is also the inaugural Chair of the University of Wisconsin Institute for Diversity Science, associate director in the Collaborative Center for Health Equity, and faculty lead in the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research. Dr. Byars-Winston has received numerous awards for her research on advancing diversity goals and mentorship in STEM fields. In 2011, Dr. Byars-Winston was selected as a Champion of Change by the White House through President Obama's Winning the Future initiative for her research efforts to diversify science fields. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Innovation in Mentorship Research award from the Association of Clinical and Translational Research. Dr. Byars-Winston chaired the National Academies of Sciences' 2019 consensus study report, The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM. She is an elected Fellow in the American Psychological Association and is currently an appointed member of the NIH National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council. Over a career spanning nearly 50 years, Ray Allen has worked at the John Deere Company and served in a number of leadership roles in state government, including Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. He was elected to three terms on the Madison School Board from 1995 to 2004, has served as chair of the Madison Area Technical College Board, and is the former publisher and owner of weekly newspaper The Madison Times. In 2016 Allen was honored with the Outstanding Alumni of Color Award from the UW–Madison Division of Diversity, Equity & Educational Achievement. He currently serves on more than 10 corporate and community boards, including 100 Black Men, the Overture Center, UMOJA Magazine's board of directors, United Way of Dane County, American Red Cross, Downtown Madison Inc., and Madison College. Joe also volunteers at Crossroads Hospice and in 2018 he was recognized as Multifamily Investor of the Year by Think Realty Magazine. Summary Joe Fairless, co-founder of Ashcroft Capital, shares his journey from single-family homes to multifamily syndication. He discusses the challenges he faced, including a 168-unit property that lost money, and the lessons he learned along the way. Joe emphasizes the importance of having a plan and believing in the operator's ability to execute that plan when considering a capital call. He also provides insights into the current multifamily market, highlighting the upcoming under supply of apartments and the potential for increased demand and valuations in the future. Keywords multifamily syndication, capital call, under supply of apartments, demand dynamics, due diligence, personal development Takeaways Having a plan and believing in the operator's ability to execute the plan are crucial when considering a capital call. The multifamily market is expected to experience an under supply of apartments in the future, leading to increased demand and valuations. When conducting due diligence, it is important to focus on NOI growth to isolate cap compression from the execution of the business plan. Investing in personal development can provide long-term benefits and pay bigger dividends than one-off investments. Taking action and making the decision to make a passive investment can lead to great satisfaction and the desire to start sooner. Titles Taking Action and Making the Decision to Invest Passively The Importance of Having a Plan and Believing in the Operator Sound Bites "Having a plan and believing in the operator's ability to execute the plan." "We're about to have more demand than supply. So in theory, prices will go up, which will help the valuations for any apartment community." "Focus on development of myself and then that will pay bigger dividends than any one-off investment would." In a new press conference-style episode, True Crime Reporter's Robert Riggs takes questions from fans.  True crime fan Patricia Rocha turns the table on Riggs and asks what it is like to go inside the crime scene tape. Riggs recently met Rocha, an architecture student, and her friends at a ceremony for Outstanding Alumni from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Afterward, Rocha and her friends peppered him with questions about true crime cases. Looking on was Bill Peel, an Outstanding Alum and Executive Director of Innovation at Texas A&M's Mays School of Business. Peel suggested that a press conference-style interview by fans should be a regular feature here. Riggs has covered his share of press conferences at the White House, Capitol Hill, Pentagon, State Department, FBI, and breaking news at crime scenes. But unlike the spokespersons behind those podiums, you will not find Riggs dancing around any questions. If you want to come on the podcast for a press conference send an email to Fan@TrueCrimeReporter.com.   Tell Riggs what you want to talk about and why. Here's today's True Crime Reporter® press conference.  We want to become your favorite true crime podcast. Please leave a review wherever you listen. Kemp has been a municipal Chief Executive Officer of major cities in the United States during his public service career. Prior to this, he worked his way through school while serving as the Assistant to the President of a real estate brokerage and appraisal company in San Diego, California. In fact, Roger was the recipient of a scholarship from the California Real Estate Association (CREA) to complete his undergraduate education. He subsequently received a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Business Administration, with a Specialization in Real Estate, from San Diego State University (SDSU). His original degree was an AA degree from Long Beach City College (LBCC), that he earned in the evening while serving on active duty in the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG). After receiving his Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree from SDSU two years later, he began his public service career in the Office of Budget and Management Services (OBMS) and, later, in the Office of the City Manager, in the City of Oakland, CA. Roger attended Golden Gate University's (GGU) doctoral program in Public Administration in the evening while serving in Oakland. He received his degree five-years later. Roger became a city manager the same month that he received his doctoral degree. During his city management career, he has taught graduate seminars at leading universities on both the West and East Coasts in the evenings. These schools included the University of California, California State University, Golden Gate University, Rutgers University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, the University of Connecticut, and the University of New Haven. Roger has written, edited, and been a contributing author to nearly 50 books dealing with cities. Many of his books focus on various aspects of cities, and highlight the national best practices being used to improve the quality of their services as well as their livability. These best practices include minimizing the negative impact of automobiles, growth management, the restoration of nature, the positive aspects of using the arts for inner-city renewal, and state-of-the-art economic development practices. Roger has also written about the importance of strategic planning, evolving immigrant services, financial management, and how to properly plan for the future of America's cities. When Roger was a city manager in Southern California he taught for GGU and completed the requirements for, and received, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in management. He received the Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award for 2007 for "Distinguished Service in the Field of Public Administration" from the School of Public Affairs at SDSU. This honor is recommended by the faculty, and is based upon the graduate's contributions to the field of public administration during his or her public service career. Several years later, in 2018, the School of Public Affairs, at San Diego State University, recognized Dr. Roger Kemp, at their 50 year anniversary ceremony, as one of their top 50 "outstanding alumni," during the first half-century (50 years) of their School of Public Affairs Program's founding. This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Kevin Iega Jeff — Artistic Director, Executive Director and Cofounder at Chicago’s Deeply Rooted Dance Theater. Throughout his career, Jeff has collaborated on a wide range of professional and community-based projects, including Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It; The Academy Awards; and The Wiz on Broadway. Kevin has received countless accolades for his work, including being named one of Julliard School’s top 100 Outstanding Alumni.  For Kevin, a dance company is only as good as its people. And, as an artist in dance leadership, it is his responsibility to look after the good of those that fall underneath him — and to do anything less would risk losing his organization. On the podcast, Kevin dives deep on his philosophies as a dance leader and gets “in the weeds” on how to build the foundation for a successful dance company that keeps its people at the center.   Moving Quotes: "If my company was just about dance, we might have folded during the more difficult times. But that never crossed our mind because growing people is at the core of the work. To grow communities." "In a capitalistic-focused society, we can tend to lose the spiritual value of how we engage with each other." "If you can support people through their errors, on the other side of that, you build an incredible amount of trust. You build an incredible amount of visioning and a safe space for you to collaborate." "Management is art, and art is management. Because you're engaging with people. And the reason why management is there is because things won't work perfectly, and people will need guidance." "[We've thrived for 25 years because] we identified and began planting the seeds for intergenerational leadership, so that we could make the organic transitions that the organization required to thrive over 25 years, as needed." "We [put rules in place around dialogues] so that we can move on with the productivity of the business of the organization, while also making sure that we're being accountable to the human engagement. Which is the only way things are going to work. If you lose the human engagement, you lose your organization." "In my education, having parallel worlds between the professional and the academic were really important to me. I also think mentoring is key."   Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:15: Kevin discusses the origins of his company — Deeply Rooted Dance Theater — and his current role with the company. 6:08: Kevin explains the secret behind Deeply Rooted’s success, as it embarks upon its 25th year as a dance company.  11:44: Jeff describes the process that went into crafting his dance company’s compelling mission statement and gives some tips for anyone looking to do the same. 16:32: Jeff sheds some incredible insight into how he managed to create a sustainable business plan for his dance company, while also honoring its core values. 22:26: Kevin walks through his earliest dance journey and discusses the value of hard work and delayed gratification. 28:05: Jeff explains what was most beneficial about his dance education. 32:19: Kevin describes the importance of self-positioning in order to make the best decisions possible and how he is spending his life helping others do that well.   Bullet List of Resources –  Kevin Iega Jeff LinkedIn   Deeply Rooted Dance Theater Company Website Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube

From 1927 until his death in 1979, E.F. Joseph documented the daily lives of African Americans in the Bay Area. His images were printed in the Pittsburgh Courier and the Chicago Defender, but not widely published in his home community. A graduate of the American School of Photography in Illinois, Joseph photographed the likes of such celebrities and activists as Josephine Baker, Mahalia Jackson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Thurgood Marshall. However, what is perhaps more compelling within these pages are the countless images of everyday citizens teaching, entertaining, worshipping, working, and serving their community and their nation. Emmanuel Francis (E. F.) Joseph (1900-1979) was born on November 8, 1900 in St. Lucia, West Indies. After graduating from the American School of Photography of Illinois, he moved to Oakland, California in 1924 where he served as an apprentice in a photography studio. He was the first professional African American photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area operating a commercial and studio photography business in his home initially at 1303 Adeline St. and then at 384 50th St. in Oakland. In 1980, Careth Reid purchased Josephs collection of negatives and personal papers, and nearly four decades later, a labor of love comes to fruition with the publication of The Picture Man: From the Collection of Bay Area Photographer E. F. Joseph (Arcadia, 2017). Ms. Reid, a lifelong educator and champion of community service in the Bay Area, partnered with longtime friend Ruth Beckford, a dancer, teacher, choreographer, actor, and author. Ms. Reid, a native of Berkeley, was the recipient of San Francisco State University’s Alumna of the Year Award in 1990 and is also a member of the university’s Hall of Fame. Ms. Beckford is featured in a downtown mural of the community’s artists and was also celebrated as an Outstanding Alumni of Oakland Technical High School in 2015. Together, they tell the story of the Bay Areas African American community through the eye and lens of one of its own. Ms. Beckford and Ms. Reid live in Oakland, California.
