WES BROWNE chats to Scott Blackburn & Paul Burke about his noir THEY ALL FALL THE SAME, (US Amazon link) why it wasn't called Spoon, the Appalachians, North Carolina, pizza and community. They All Fall the Same: Cannabis kingpin Burl Spoon has reigned over the Jackson County area for three decades, building a powerful backwoods empire. But behind a well-run organization, his personal life is crumbling - his daughter can't stay clean; his son has hated him since coming out; and after enduring years of infidelity, his wife is straying too. The only person not on his payroll who still adores him is his six-year-old granddaughter, Chelsea. When his daughter overdoses on heroin laced with fentanyl and one of his employees is murdered, Burl's retaliation against Clovis Begley, the patriarch of the heroin-dealing family involved in both deaths, is inevitable. As Burl's plan spirals into a firestorm of vengeance that threatens the safety of his granddaughter, his drive for revenge conflicts with his longing for redemption. On the brink of losing everything, Burl must find a path between retribution and protecting what's left of his family.Wes Browne has lived and practiced law as a criminal defense attorney, prosecutor, and public defender in Appalachian Kentucky for over twenty-four years. He also helps run his family's pizza shops.Mentions and recommends: Mark Westmoreland, Henry Wise, SA Cosby, Silas House, Wiley Cash, David Joy, Tom Franklin, Ron Rash, Robert Gipe, Barbara Kingsolver, Chris Offutt, Leah Hampton, Annette Clapsaddle, Eryk Pruitt, Kelly J Ford, Steve Weddell, Benjamin Percy, James DF Hannah, Ted Flanagan, Dom Nolan, Donald Ray Pollock, Elmore Leonard. Most importantly: Here's my Bookshop.org list for Frank Bill, where you can pre-order BACK TO THE DIRT, and pick up all of Frank's other books, too. BTTD drop 5/9!I first met Frank Bill in his home town of Corydon Indiana, on September 10th, 2011. It was the book release party for his first book, CRIMES IN SOUTHERN INDIANA. It's also where I first met Donald Ray Pollock, Matthew McBride, Scott Phillips, Jedidiah Ayres, Kyle Minor, and (in person) David James Keaton. It's also where I first met Waffle House. It was a significant trip for me.Since that time, I've done reviews for all of Frank's books, and interviewed him several times. I have a long history with this author, and I really enjoy his writing. So, when I got wind of his new book releasing, I was so excited that I had a podcast to invite him on to! What follows is a little over an hour of discussion about war, mental illness, drugs, and other things that can erode and destroy a person. You may think that, because Frank is a crime author, we dig into the dirty grittiness of life. Honestly it's more about the devastating effect all of these things can have on people, families, communities, and a national identity. We talk about how it's important to honor family and history, and to make an effort to understand people - especially people who come from different backgrounds. It was a great conversation that I hope you enjoy. For anyone viewing the YouTube video: There was an issue with the video file on Frank's side, so about halfway in to the recording, his feed goes to a still photo. The audio is fine, thankfully. We just lost some of the video. Apologies for making you look at my face more.YouTube video: Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe

Feedback Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman (tw: for sexual assault and miscarriage) (rec’d by Margot) The Secret History of the Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig (rec’d by Rose?) Current Futures: A Sci-Fi Ocean Anthology, edited by Ann Vandermeer (rec’d by Stephanie) Questions 1. Hey y’all! Could I ask for two separate recommendations? One is for my job and one is for my personal reading. I would appreciate it.  My professional recommendation: I am a 7th and 8th grade history teacher and I’m looking for some middle grade historical fiction books for the classroom, preferably Texas history and US history since those are the subjects I teach.  My personal recommendation: I really, really enjoyed True Detective, especially season 1 with Matthew McConnaughey and Woody Harrelson. I would like to read dark crime/detective/mystery/thriller books similar to True Detective.  Thank you so much for your help, I really enjoy the podcast! Respectfully, -Mason 2. I would love some recs for my Dad. He is basically retired bc of Covid. He has worked from home since March 2019 and watched ALL the tv shows and I want him to have some mental stimulation. I can’t remember the last book he read but I can tell you he loves sports, westerns, detective stuff and small town America. He would HATE anything with fantasy, sci-fi or true crime.   -Donya 3. I just finished Ask Again, Yes. And I absolutely loved it! I’m wanting to find another novel similar to it. I think I loved how the characters were so fully drawn and rich. The author did such a great job exploring all the characters personal backgrounds that way you fully understood who they were in all their complexities. I enjoyed the dynamic between the two families and the special, almost idyllic, childhood friendship between Peter and Kate. I also loved watching how the people changed over time. Books that I’ve enjoyed before that felt similar to this one are Little Fires Everywhere and Commonwealth. Thanks! -Emily  4. I’m finishing up with all the fall mysteries and spooky reads, and would love a recommendation for something heartwarming to read around the winter holidays/darkest week of the year. I typically like to read something lighthearted or at least with a happy ending, about characters with some emotional complexity and strong chosen-family relationships. LGBTQIA characters are pretty important to me, but the chosen family storyline is most important. Last year I read The Snow Child and loved it, but I could also go for something like House in the Cerulean Sea. Holiday or wintery themes are welcome but not necessary. I love fantasy, literary fiction, and memoirs (but am not into reading short stories or books that really center romance). Thanks so much, -Angela 5. I’ve been listening to your podcast for years and now need help. I finished reading The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune recently and completely fell in love with it. I loved the story, I loved the adult characters and I loved the children characters. I loved their relationships with each other and I loved the growth throughout the book of Linus. This is just such a sweet cozy read and I would love to find something similar. Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! -Ashley 6. I have desperately been trying to find a book like Lovely War by Julie Berry. I read it back in June and haven’t found a book that even compares since.  My favourite things about this book were the mythology, the romance, the time period (1920s), the way the gods interacted with the humans, the portrayal of death, the settings (England and France with a little bit of Belgium and America), etc.  It would be SO SO amazing if you could find any books like it! Thank you.  PS: LOVE your show and have so many new amazing books because of it.  -Niamh 7. So I’m looking for poetry audiobook recommendations. I recently bought Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass on audio and found it to be extremely therapeutic. I’m in law school now and don’t have the time to read anything except case books. I also found I have about zero capacity for concentration left outside of my class material and find my mind wandering during even my most favorite podcasts (Get Booked) which I listen to for the therapeutic aspect. But I found that Violet is something I can listen to over and over again and I feel soothed. I like that it’s ethereal and nostalgic. I like themes of love and love for your city and the personification of a city. I like the dreaminess of it too. I do like spoken word but I’d prefer things that aren’t particularly heart wrenching or political. I’m looking more for an escape than an awakening. Hope I haven’t made this impossible! Thanks

The characters are introduced in a post WW II setting and follows them through the 1950s. It’s one of those 6 degrees of separation type flicks.

Writer, Donald Ray Pollock's debut novel is brought to the screen by director Antonio Campos and with a great cast and strong production values, it's exactly the kind of grimy Hillybilly-noir I should adore. Sadly it's a boring, indistinct, meaningless mess of a film that takes far too long to give us the salvation of Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson.

The Devil All The Time, based on the novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, takes place in the 1960s after World War II in Southern Ohio amongst a group of bizarre, compelling and disturbed people who suffer from the war's psychological damages. Collett plays Gary Matthew Bryson, a naïve partner-in-crime to husband and wife team of serial killers, Carl and Sandy Henderson (played by Clarke & Keough, respectively), who troll America's highways searching for suitable models to photograph and exterminate. Executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, the dark and gritty film intersects storylines with a sickly and unsettling ability to entangle viewers into its spell. A colorful array of delightfully nasty, dirty and chaotic characters awaits you upon your first watch, and while each person has their own story, characters are inexplicably linked in the most peculiar of circumstances. The highly anticipated psychological thriller is scheduled to be released on Netflix later this year. Collett has been acting on film and stage for over 15 years and is also a trained stunt professional. His appearances in television include HBO's “Watchmen,” HBO's “Hung,” and NBC's “Chuck.” His film credits include "Stay at Condor Beach," the action-thriller "Military State," and the faith-based film "Inheritance", starring alongside legendary actor Robert Miano. Jason also played the lead role of Jamie Nabozny in the documentary "Bullied: A Student, A School, and a Case That Made History" for the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance program. Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen est né en septembre 1949 à Long Branch (New Jersey).

Scrapper (Soho Press)In Scrapper, Kelly scavenges for scrap metal from the hundred thousand abandoned buildings in a part of Detroit known as “the zone,” an increasingly wild landscape where one day he finds something far more valuable than the copper he’s come to steal: a kidnapped boy, crying out for rescue. Briefly celebrated as a hero, Kelly secretly takes on the responsibility of avenging the boy’s unsolved kidnapping, a task that will take him deeper into the zone and into a confrontation with his own past, his long-buried trauma, memories made dangerous again. Praise for Scrapper:"Scrapper is an offering to the grim phoenix rising out of the ashes of Industrial America—elegy, eulogy, and prophesy. Readers: listen and attend!"—Aaron Gwyn, author of Wynne's War and Dog on the Cross"Scrapper is a meditative, moody work of art. It's about love and violence, hope and ruin, a kind of superhero story for adults. Matt Bell is truly gifted and his latest offers more proof that he's a writer we should all be reading."—Victor LaValle, author of The Devil in Silver"Matt Bell adds his song to the poetry inherent in the image of the abandoned city. Here, in his fierce second novel,Scrapper, Bell mines Detroit, the zone, with Kelly, an unforgettably rendered ruin, an 'unaccomodated man . . . a poor, bare, forked animal,' who yet amazes with his capacity to love." —Christine Schutt, author of Prosperous Friends"In the imaginative, mysterious, and beautiful Scrapper, Matt Bell delves into the complexity of ruins: the wider American ruins and the local personal ruins. This is an evocative novel that lingers over what has been abandoned and shows us how the places we inhabit shape who we are and how we are."—Dana Spiotta, author of Stone Arabia"A fearless and harrowing meditation on the ruination and transformation of cities and of people; but amid loss and destruction, Bell finds a strain of piercing hope. This is an extraordinary book."—Emily St. John Mandel, New York Times bestselling author of Station Eleven"Like the very best novels, Matt Bell's dark and suspenseful Scrapper works on so many levels that it's difficult to describe in just a few words, but what I can tell you is that it's ultimately about love and death, and that people will still be reading it when all of America, not just Detroit, is crumbling under the weight of its mistakes." —Donald Ray Pollock, author of The Devil All the TimeMatt Bell is the author of the novel In the House upon the Dirt between the Lake and the Woods, a finalist for the Young Lions Fiction Award, a Michigan Notable Book, and an Indies Choice Adult Debut Book of the Year Honor Recipient, as well as the winner of the Paula Anderson Book Award. His stories have appeared in Best American Mystery Stories, Conjunctions, Gulf Coast, The American Reader, and many other publications. Born in Michigan, he now teaches creative writing at Arizona State University.Amelia Gray is the author of four books: AM/PM, Museum of the Weird, THREATS, and Gutshot. Her fiction and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Tin House, and VICE. She lives in Los Angeles.
