Shailee Basnet scaled Mt. Everest in 2008. She then led a historic “Seven Summits Women Team,” which became the world's first group to scale the highest peak in each continent. She currently leads, “Female Leadership Academy” in Nepal to help train young female survivors of human trafficking. Growing up with Mt. Everest in her backyard, Shailee saw climbing the mountain as her ticket to adventure. She took on climbing as a way to figure out what her body was capable of doing, and has since worked to lead teams across the 7 Summits. It takes incredible self-awareness to recognize when something is missing from your life and then take the action to do something about it. As a nearly five-foot-tall woman who started her journey having never trekked before in her life, Shailee had to work extra hard and she earned every single ability that she needed to climb Everest. Even when Shailee woke up paralyzed, she kept working toward her goals. She recognized that failure is just another emotion that has to be processed and worked through. She reflects on the presence of hospitality in the climbing industry and the differences between men and women in teamwork. As she says, “the clarity to stick together” as a team has been key to overcoming any challenge. Just as each summit she conquered presented its own unique set of challenges, each challenge you face in your life has to be addressed and handled in its own way. For Shailee, it was a simple pair of mittens; for you, it could be something as simple as a sales call that can go completely awry if you don't give it the full attention that it deserves. Every challenge you face requires your full attention and just may become your next great conquest. This is no ordinary "TV Talk"! This week, the Paradise Pals are here to deep dive into the horrors and beauties that arise from past relationships being brought into reality television. This episode primarily focuses on the impacts of Tyler's ex-girlfriend, Shailee, joining the hotel, and how the two of them, along with Rosanna and the rest of the house, deal with the new twist Kristin has dealt the houseguests. For once in this show, the contestants act civil, all while being placed in the most tortuous of situations. OH and one last thing... there is a check-out ceremony tonight and 2 women will be leaving the house!!! How serious of a couple were Tyler and Shailee? How many women can Carlos (aka Papi Saizon) choose from now? And who did Jesus Christ bring into the fantasy suites with him? Tune in to find out all this and more, but only on "The Good, The Bad, & The Movies"! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tgtbtm/message

These are terrible, painful days for many people in Nepal, and so I hesitated to post this episode. But then I thought, in the midst of the devastation and death caused by Covid-19 it is important to hear something positive and, in this case, not something cheery just for the sake of diverting our attention, like cat videos on social media. Rather, in today's episode we're talking about a positive, rising trend: the number of Nepalis who are reaching greater heights, both real — like the women's team that recently climbed Mt Annapurna — and metaphorically — like Chef Santosh Sah, who, with his unique Nepali dishes, wowed judges and the UK audience en route to the final of MasterChef Britain. Speaking to me is someone who knows first-hand the highs, and lows, of attaining a mighty goal — Shailee Basnet, who was one of a 10-woman team that summitted Mt Everest in 2008, a team that went on to reach the top of the tallest peaks on seven continents. Shailee will help me untangle why so many accomplishments seem to be, paradoxically, occurring during the pandemic. She will also explain her one-of-a-kind email signature. You know that creeping sensation you get when you think someone's watching you? Several scientific studies have found evidence to suggest that our minds have a mysterious capacity to sense what's happening around us, even if we’re not actually "seeing" it. But, is it all only in our minds? Do we have a sixth sense, something that tells us whether a stranger is near, watching us? Tune in to hear a true and terrifying story from Shailee, one of our long-time listeners, titled, “Someone Was Watching Me Sleep.” Source: https://www.sciencealert.com/the-science-behind-why-you-think-you-re-being-watched This episode was written and produced by Jaden McKell. This week on AnthroDish, I am interviewing freelancer writer and journalist, Shailee Koranne. Based out of Toronto, ON, she writes about pop culture, bodies, cultural production, politics, and identity, and has written for major news outlets like VICE, Huffington Post Canada, Bitch Media, GUTS, and the Aerogram. On top of all the amazing writing she does, she also studies Equity Studies at the University of Toronto. I was introduced to Shailee through a mutual friend and read a piece she wrote for Bitch Media called “The Fried Chicken Dilemma: Ugly Delicious wants us to love our foods and ourselves" where she explores the negative role that food-related stereotypes have on the relationships between people of colour and their cultural foods. She has a writing style that expertly intertwines her personal experiences of racism and food stigma with broader themes of racial stereotypes and identity. On today’s episode we discuss how food stereotypes inform and maintain historically racist attitudes and biases, particularly for Asians in North America, as well as the role that food plays in everyday racial microaggressions. We also talk about how cultural foods are sterilized and removed from their contexts in order to present them to white and Western diners, and the implications of "trend" culture (i.e. charcoal ice cream, superfoods, and any restaurant with a line up around the corner in Toronto) on cultural foods. Shailee discusses how she learned to unpack and unlearn some of the harmful attitudes through her writing on the topic as well. I’m so excited for you to check this interview out, as Shailee has some really amazing insights and powerful reflections on the ways in which food shapes and changes personal and cultural identities. Shailee Basnet grew up in the shadow of the Himalayas in Kathmandu, but never thought of mountaineering herself. In her twenties she answered an advert for Nepali women to tackle Everest, and has never looked back. Shailee is now the leader of the first all-women team to successfully complete the Seven Summits Challenge - climbing the tallest mountain on every continent. Katja Staartjes became the first Dutch woman to summit Everest in 1999, and has also done more dangerous climbs of over 8000 metres in Pakistan and Tibet. Katja says she loves putting everything she needs on her back, and setting off into the mountains.
