In a tragic turn of events, Specialist Neftaly Platero is convicted of a shocking crime that has left a profound impact on the military community and beyond. The case centers around a devastating incident involving a triple shooting that resulted in the deaths of Specialist John Carrillo and Private First Class Gebrah Noonan, with Jeffrey, a fellow soldier, narrowly surviving the attack. The incident occurred during a routine deployment, where tensions and stress were high. On that fateful day, Specialist Platero, previously a respected member of the armed forces, allegedly opened fire on his comrades during what was initially described as a routine check.The attack claimed the lives of Carrillo and Noonan and left Jeffrey gravely injured. The investigation that followed was intense and thorough, uncovering disturbing details about Platero's state of mind leading up to the shooting. Evidence pointed to a series of behavioral issues and troubling changes in Platero's demeanor. Despite the complexity of the case and the emotional turmoil of those involved, the prosecution argued that Platero's actions were deliberate and fueled by underlying grievances or personal issues. Platero was charged with double murder and attempted murder. The trial was marked by emotional testimonies from survivors, family members of the deceased, and military peers.The defense attempted to argue for Platero's psychological state as a mitigating factor, but the overwhelming evidence and the gravity of the crime led to his conviction. Sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, Platero's case serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact that trauma and mental health issues can have on individuals, even those in positions of responsibility. Shonk, Professor of History at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse to talk about his new book, Ireland's New Traditionalists: Fianna Fail Republicanism and Gender, 1926 – 38, out this year, 2021, with Cork University Press. The creation of Fianna Fáil in 1926 marked a new era in Irish politics wherein an evolved version of Irish republicanism, suited to operate in the Irish Free State, entered the political arena. Fianna Fáil was indeed a political organisation, but it was also a nationalist project, intent on creating a wide-reaching electorate and shaping Ireland's political discourse. De Valera's party defied the moribund direction of Irish republicanism, reversing the trend to the extent that the movement ultimately triumphed with the passage of the 1937 Bunreacht na hÉireann (Constitution of Ireland) and the Éire Confirmation Bill of 1938. Ireland's New Traditionalists situates Fianna Fáil's nationalist republican project within a broader European context by analysing the republican aesthetic through the lens of gender theory as well as situating Ireland within the context of interwar Europe. This analytical approach reveals that Fianna Fáil—the party that ‘made' the modern Irish Republic—spent a great deal of time and energy in building a national discourse rooted in a male/female binary that served to ‘correct' short term crises and long-term traumas by fabricating versions of an idealised Irish Feminine and Masculine that served to embody the party's vision of a traditionalist, yet modern Ireland. On a bonus episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast, ABA VP Krista Shonk outlines the process for modernizing Community Reinvestment Act regulations and how bankers can get involved. Shonk provides a detailed analysis of what’s in the OCC’s August advance notice of proposed rulemaking, including questions about ways the banking agencies can encourage more lending in areas that need it, clarify the types of activities that receive positive CRA consideration, update the assessment area concept and measure bank performance with a metric-based approach. Shonk also explains that the OCC will share public comments on the ANPR with the other banking agencies, informing the interagency process of modernizing CRA rules. For that reason, she encourages all banks — regardless of whether the OCC supervises them — to send a comment letter by Nov. 19. Screenwriter Chad J. Already wary of prequels, many wondered if a Han Solo origin story was necessary.   Phantom Troublemaker, Beth V, and Chad J. Shonk discuss Timothy Zahn’s new Star Wars novel, Thrawn, as well as Grand Admiral Thrawn’s history in the galaxy far, far away!   In 1991 Timothy Zahn released the first official, Lucasfilm approved narrative to expand the Star Wars galaxy beyond the events of Return of the Jedi. He continued the adventures of the characters we all knew and loved, but also introduced a number of new characters that would grow to become vital and beloved fixtures in the new ongoing canon of the Expanded Universe (now known as Legends).   Among those characters was Mith’raw’nuruodo, a member of the previously unknown Chiss species. Against all odds he rose through the ranks of the human-centric Empire to attain the rare rank of Grand Admiral, all in order to guard against a threat from outside the galaxy. Thanks to his tactical genius and driven nature, Thrawn became a hugely popular character to EU fans.   When Disney bought Lucasfilm and stated their intention to eject all previous canon, Thrawn was assumed to be lost to the changing tides.
