In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing my friend and colleague, Dr. Ed Dunkelblau, who is the International Coordinator for the Academy for SEL in schools to discuss social & emotional learning. I was, of course, previously aware of EQ, or emotional quotient, but wasn't up-to-date with SEL and Ed brought the receipts. We talked about what SEL is, the skills that comprise it and the benefits of implementing it in schools. Ed had a great response to the question, "When should we be teaching kids SEL skills in school?" and he said, "When their parents are in kindergarten." The benefits of SEL are astounding and everything educators and parents would want. In addition, research shows greater SEL skills lead to better academic grades. It's not an extra, fluffy thing; SEL actually is something that enhances learning. Ed also shared the choice he made to get involved with aath.org as a significantly positive choice he made. He found his home at the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. To reach him for more information, email ed@teacheq.com. If you are interested in certification in SEL, there are two online certification course series at Rutgers University that lead to certification. There are two strands, one for educators to learn SEL in the classroom and the other for administrators to apply SEL in their school setting. You will find both programs here.

Frank Chindano is the Founder & CEO of LaughMD, sure knows a thing or two about comedy and the power of humor. Frank's comedy career resume is a riot. He's been a writer for SNL, worked on Ghostbusters, and has garnered some 30+ awards for writing and producing comedy videos for HBO, Showtime, CBS, PBS, Comedy Central and more. In addition, he's a certified humor professional as part of the Association of Applied and Therapeutic Humor, Frank launched LaughMD, the worlds' first mobile comedy channel and it's a huge hit with patients and health care workers in hospitals and health facilities around the country. LaughMD iPads are a digital therapeutic healing tool. LaughMD Has PROOF They're The Best Medicine! SERIOUSLY. 500 scientific studies show positive health benefits of humor and laughter. If you saw the movie Patch Adam's with Robin Williams, you'll understand why the real Patch Adam's is on Franks' LaughMD advisory board. Dr. Patch Adam's is a medical doctor and a clown who has devoted over 40 years of his life to changing Americas healthcare system and has traveled the world sharing his message that laughter, joy and creativity are an integral part of the healing process. Health care providers and patients are raving how the LaughMD content is lowering their stress and pain. No joke! Franks says, when you laugh your breathing gets better, your heart rate slows, your blood pressure goes down, all kinds of things happen to you when you laugh, all kinds of good things! Your endorphins, your serotonin, your dopamine go up, your cortisol and your adrenaline go down. So, you feel less pain and you are in a better mood and so that promotes healing. You heal more quickly, literally. Frank also says, the nurses love it too, because their job is so incredibly stressful that according to National Public Radio about half of them are going to be planning on leaving the profession in the next two years because there's so much stress. They don't have to convince me. I'm positive my sense of humor is what got me through my own 2 bouts of cancer. My favorite line I used every time I arrived for chemo treatment wearing a wig was, “Hi I'm here for the modeling assignment.” I ‘get' and wholeheartedly support Frank Chindano and LaughMD. Frank says, “Ask your doctors, ask your health officials, ask your hospitals to please subscribe because we don't sell to the public, we sell to the institutions, health care institutions, dialysis, cancer clinics, drug and alcohol recovery, that sort of thing. Those are our customers. So if you work there, please, my phone number is on the website and if you're a customer there, even better.:” Right now LaughMD is an app but they're raising funding so that they can do it in virtual reality, and hook up with medical devices so people can see their biometrics change in real time. Tune in to this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show and meet Frank Chindano and help spread the word to other healthcare facilities about the healing power of LaughMD.

This special episode, originally released by Laugh Box, the podcast of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor, brings humorists Katy Bee and Jim Bob Williams together with East Side Institute director Dr. Lois Holzman to talk, joke, and giggle about the importance of humor, fun and happiness in human development. Guaranteed to raise some serious questions and quite a few smiles. ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. The Institute is a center for social change efforts that reinitiate human and community development. We support, connect, and partner with committed and creative activists, scholars, artists, helpers, and healers all over the world. In 2003, Institute co-founders Lois Holzman and the late Fred Newman had a paper published with the title “All Power to the Developing.” This phrase captures how vital it is for all people—no matter their age, circumstance, status, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation—to grow, develop and transform emotionally, socially and intellectually if we are to have a shot at creating something positive out of the intense crises we're all experiencing. We hope that this podcast series will show you that, far more than a slogan, “all power to the developing” is a loving activity, a pulsing heart in an all too cruel world. ----more---- The East Side Institute is a hub for a diverse and emergent community of social activists, thought leaders, and practitioners who are reigniting our human abilities to imagine, create and perform beyond ourselves—to develop. Robin and I have known each other for years. I met her a few years back as she was initially transitioning out of the Army. At that time, Robin was just starting her comedy career, but it was clear in just those first few times meeting her, she had a gift for making others laugh and was going to go so far. She's now not only showing the world what a successful post-military transition can be, but she is using this skill to demonstrate how laughter can help us in our darkest periods. And she is an Ohio State buckeye like me! In 1994, Robin enlisted in the Ohio National Guard and served as a 92Y Unit Supply Specialist. She was later commissioned through THE Ohio State University ROTC program as a Quartermaster Officer. Robin's career highlights include five deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, Company Commander, A Co, 603rd ASB, 3d Combat Aviation Brigade, 3d Infantry Division; Support Operations Officer, 3d Cavalry Regiment; Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Battalion Commander, 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division; and Employment Director, Soldier For Life. Her awards and decorations include the Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder badges, three Bronze stars, and the Defense Meritorious Service medal. Robin's new mission is to heal people, organizations, and communities through humor. She created Best Medicine Brigade to give veteran and military spouse comedians performance opportunities and heal people with humor. Robin's passion is the applied and therapeutic use of humor for mental health which is why she also facilitates HEAL*ARIOUS, a humor therapy program for veterans. She is a Level 2 Certified Humor Professional with the Association For Applied and Therapeutic Humor and a comedy boot camp instructor for Armed Services Arts Partnership. In this video, I experience the practice of therapeutic humour under the kind and wise guidance of Mallori DeSalle and Dr Lodge McCammon. They demonstrate some warm up exercises, therapeutic exercises, and we have a lot of laughs! It was also interesting to consider how therapeutic humour might relate to compassion and self-compassion, as well as in the practice of compassion focused therapy (CFT). Would love to hear your thoughts on how humour fits within the CFT framework! Our twenty-second episode of the Creative Flow: Thinkers and Change Agents Podcast Series features Beth Slazak, MBA, MS, a certified humor professional, the Education and Events Manager at the Creative Education Foundation, and the conference manager of the Creative Problem Solving Institute (CPSI). She has an MBA and a Master's in Creativity and Change Leadership from the Center for Applied Imagination, SUNY Buffalo State. Beth shares her work with teachers sharing tools such as empathy maps to make learning more engaging, and describes the experience of CPSI as so much more than a conference. This year is again in person, and there are opportunities to learn foundations in Creative Problem Solving or take advanced immersion classes that are deep dives into topics. One of the highlights will be Massimo Agostinelli from Cirque du Soleil, who explores the concept of bouffon characters with a sense of humor. Some people have attended 40 CPSIs, and they keep coming back for the campfires, networking, labyrinth as well as the learning. Beth describes her journey as self-actualization, where deliberate Creativity has given her more awareness and a deeper understanding. She studied improv at Second City and the Comedy Sport and a three-year program offered by the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor. She uses improv in every training at CEF and regularly experiences how games can help warm up the brain and help participants practice in a lower-risk way. Don't miss this lively discussion of what it is like to work in the field of creativity and be in the forefront of teaching at the highest level. We hope to see newbies and old friends in June at the CPSI Conference, where the community gathers to learn and laugh.
I was tempted to release this week's episode as my New Year's podcast, but I think it's still early enough in the year that the sentiment is still there. As we enter year three of an ever-changing pandemic, it might seem like there's just nothing left to laugh about anymore. Much less, things that leave us in ‘awe'!That's why I thought it might be a good idea to find someone who not only sees the world as an actively awe-inspiring place but has made a living spreading that message and helping others to see it, too. Allen Klein is an author, internationally sought-after speaker, and the world's one and only “Jollytologist”. And he's got the credentials to boot. He followed his dream of becoming a set designer and eventually found himself working for one of the longest running children's shows - Captain Kangaroo. In 1982 Allen returned to academia, earning his Masters in Therapeutic Humor from St. Mary University of Minnesota. What would follow is a writing and speaking career that is now entering its 4th decade.Allen has written over 15 books, including the international best-seller, “The Healing Power of Humor” which has been reprinted over 30 times in more than 10 different languages, as well as his latest work, “The Awe Factor: How A Little Bit of Wonder Can Make A Big Difference in Your Life”.It was a wonderful, lighthearted conversation that I hope can lift your spirits & help finish out the week with a little bit of awe. Enjoy the show.

And when we do that together, we increase the energy we have to bring to the time that we have and we're better together. So please, be good to yourself, and I'll see you next week.
