Today, we're talking about a new phenomenon that affects social interactions. Phubbing is something we've all likely experienced or done ourselves at some point. The term is a portmanteau of "phone" and "snubbing", and refers to the act of looking at your phone instead of paying attention to someone else in a social situation. It's becoming increasingly common as our reliance on our mobile devices continues to grow. The term was first introduced in 2012 by Australian advertising agency Maccann Erickson, as part of a campaign for the Macquarie Dictionary. The “A Word is Born” campaign was designed to demonstrate that language is constantly evolving and hence having an up-to-date dictionary is important. Where does the term come from? Why do people phub then? How can we avoid phubbing someone? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Send us a textDoom-scrolling through social media might be destroying your most important relationships without you even realizing it. In this revealing follow-up to our previous episode, we dive deep into the darker side of our digital habits and their profound impact on our connections with others.Did you know there's actually a term for ignoring someone while checking your phone? It's called "fubbing" (phone snubbing), and research shows it significantly decreases relationship satisfaction and trust. I share real examples from my therapy practice of couples whose relationships are deteriorating because one partner can't stop scrolling, even during what should be quality time together. The statistics are alarming - studies directly link increased Instagram usage with decreased relationship satisfaction and increased conflict with family members and spouses. Perhaps most concerning is how social media creates new avenues for potential infidelity, with over 50% of couples in one study reporting engaging in concerning online behaviors that damaged their relationships. But this episode isn't just about identifying problems - it's about solutions. I provide practical, actionable strategies to regain control of your digital life before it ruins your real-life connections. From removing social media apps from your home screen to setting specific time limits, these simple changes can dramatically improve your relationship satisfaction. When you realize that spending six hours daily on social media equates to 91 full days per year of scrolling instead of living, the cost becomes clear. The good news is that awareness is the first step toward change. By tracking your usage and implementing the strategies shared in this episode, you can break free from unhealthy digital habits and rebuild the meaningful connections that truly matter.Text "hypnosis" to 313-800-8510 to receive your free hypnosis guide PDF and learn more about how mindfulness techniques can help you build healthier digital habits.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. They also talk about a recent study, which found that higher phone use was associated with more relationship problems, and an article by a therapist, called “As A Therapist, I Know What's Breaking Couples Up.” Hint hint, it's allegedly the smartphone.

The more you connect, the less you connect!  Over recent years explosion of technology has helped us increase our connection with others, both in local communities and around the world. Many positives come from increased social connection, but one downside is when connecting with people outside the home leads you to “phub” significant people in the home, particularly your partner.  Phubbing = phone + snub. It's where your focus on connecting via your phone causes you to snub people in your immediate surrounds. Often occurs with a partner.  Partners can play a crucial role in our wellbeing including helping with better work-life balance and wellbeing. 75% of people choose to share their emotional struggles with their partner as the first port of call. Partners are usually the most available people in our home life too. Good partner support is also associated with our own career success.    On the other hand, phubbing has been linked to poorer quality of relations with partner, and lowered sense of self-esteem in the partner.    What can people do about it?  It's not about throwing the baby out with the bathwater – it's still important to connect with work colleagues and share work-related stressors with them.  Wherever you are – be there! If you're at work, connect with people at work. If you're at home, connect with people at home.  Set some limits around use of phones in your relationship e.g. no phones during dinner, not using phones after a certain time at night, not using them in bed.  Workplaces also have a role to play in this by setting appropriate expectations around replying to emails, messages, etc., out-of-hours. Hard to be present with your partner if your boss is messaging you demanding an immediate response!    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In today's digital age, the impact of phone snubbing, also known as "phubbing," and smartphone addiction on relationships is a growing concern. This issue, which disrupts communication, hinders empathy, and leads to dissatisfaction in relationships, is the focus of Dr. Fred Harvey's perspective. Dr. Harvey, who emphasizes the importance of being mindful of our smartphone use, believes that phubbing and smartphone addiction have a negative impact on relationships. He suggests that the first step towards change is for individuals to be aware of their behavior and respect those around them by engaging in face-to-face interactions. Dr. Harvey also highlights the detrimental effects of smartphone addiction on communication skills, empathy, and self-revelation, and believes that addressing this addiction is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and preventing psychological distress and loneliness. It's one of the rudest things you can do in a conversation, almost everyone does it, and now it's got a name! (:30) What's the most annoying thing about Zoom? It may not be as widespread now as it was during the pandemic, but the old annoyances haven't gone away! (3:45) Following your dreams is nice, but if you quit your job out of nowhere and leave your whole team stuck, that's all I need to know about you! (7:40) How do you introduce yourself to the new neighbors? Anna moved into a new neighborhood and Raven has a foolproof plan to endear herself to everyone! (11:20) Did you do something nice for someone over the weekend, but they didn't give you any credit?  Or did someone do something nice for you, but you forgot to thank them?  Anna and Raven will give you the credit due! (15:00) Have you ever gone to a psychic before? Anna wants to book a psychic for a Halloween party, but she wants to make sure they're a good one! (22:23) What's the grossest thing you can find on a playground? Anna took her daughter to the playground recently and was appalled when she saw one of the features! (29:19) Brian and Mary are retired. Brian would love to get a pilot's license and learn to fly small aircraft. Mary thinks it's unsafe and he's too old to take up such a dangerous hobby this late in life. Brian says she's overreacting, retirement is supposed to be for trying new things and chasing dreams you never achieved! What do you think?  (34:51) Amanda has got a shot at $100! All she has to do is beat Raven in pop culture trivia! (41:25)

Diving into Deep Waters

After a recent encounter I realized we seem to be more connected to a little device called a smartphone than to those around us. We lack in being present and have made ourselves accessible to everyone except those present! My goal is to make ourselves aware and hopefully stop phubbing. (Listen to find out what that means.)

Something I'm working on more and more - phone-based snubbing, commonly known as "phubbing," is a modern social phenomenon where individuals prioritize their smartphones over face-to-face interactions with those around them. This behavior often involves ignoring or neglecting real-world conversations, gestures, or experiences in favor of digital distractions, such as texting, scrolling through social media, or checking notifications. Phubbing can lead to feelings of disconnection and frustration among friends and loved ones, highlighting the need for mindful technology usage to maintain meaningful human connections in an increasingly digital world.

Think about the last time you went to a restaurant or sat with your partner on the couch. What do these two have in common? Phones! Phubbing, or phone snubbing, is a growing phenomenon where we spend more time on our phones or electronic devices than we do actually connecting with those around us. Eye contact, verbal communication, attunement to emotions, and physical contact are essential for true, deep connection. Phubbing can leave the other person feeling alone, disconnected, devalued, and unimportant, including with our partner. Join us as we explore phubbing. In our desire to stay ever connected with the outside world or “check out” for a bit, we lose depth and quality in our relationships nearest to us. By staring at our phones constantly, even while eating or having a conversation, we are communicating to the other person that we do not prioritize them or value what they have to say. In this episode, we offer insights into the true impact phones are having on our relationships, as well as tips to notice and correct our phubbing behaviors. You and your partner deserve better! Please head on over and check out episode 63, Phubbing Your Partner. Are you guilty of 'phubbing'? This means snubbing someone to look at your phone. New research into the effects on married couples has found that couples who regularly phub each other have lower marriage satisfaction. To discuss the issue Nuala is joined by Claire Cohen, author and journalist, who says she is guilty of this. Having graduated from drama school only three years ago Georgina Onuorah takes on the role of Dorothy in a new production of The Wizard of Oz currently on stage at the London Palladium. She joins Nuala in the Woman's Hour studio to sing ‘Over the Rainbow' live. Over 80% of legal practitioners feel that the family court, when dealing with private law cases, is likely to retraumatise victims and survivors of domestic abuse. That's according to a survey by the Office of the Domestic Abuse Commissioner which was published in a report yesterday. Nuala is joined by Nicole Jacobs, the Domestic Abuse Commissioner to find out what the report revealed. Nuala also hears from a Woman's Hour listener who is critical of the way that the family court works. Today a new song, Call Me A Lioness, is released to coincide with the start of the Women's World Cup. The drummer on the track, Al Greenwood from the band The Sports Team, joins Nuala in the studio.
