Colleen Stanley | The ROI of a Mentorship Culture & Ending the "Phubbing" EpidemicHow much is "Phubbing" (Phone Snubbing) costing your organization's trust? Most leaders view mentoring as a "nice-to-have" that loses the battle against urgent deadlines. In this episode of the Uncommon Leader Podcast, Colleen Stanley (author of Be The Mentor Who Mattered) challenges that mindset, arguing that mentoring shouldn't be a formal program to manage, but a culture where "no one goes alone."Colleen shares her moving origin story of how community mentors stepped in during personal loss and offers a refreshing, accessible definition of mentorship—from "book mentors" to "moment mentors." We dive into the practical and the profound, covering:Culture vs. Program: Why a mentorship culture scales faster and drives higher ROI in retention and productivity. The "Fobbing" Epidemic: How pulling out your phone mid-conversation destroys trust and coaching opportunities.Creative Leadership: Lessons from "Sister Emma" on problem-solving and service. The Time Myth: Real-world ways to mentor during airport rides, workouts, or even a quick trip to Chipotle. The Power of Words: How five intentional words can dismantle self-limiting beliefs and change a career trajectory.Stop waiting for a formal initiative to start leading. John Maytham speaks to Claire Hart, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Southampton, whose research examines how “phubbing” — short for phone snubbing — affects relationship dynamics. Phones have quietly become one of the biggest threats to real connection, and in this episode of Secret Life, we unpack phubbing—the habit of choosing your phone over the person right in front of you. From partners texting while you're talking to kids glued to their screens 24/7, this conversation goes beyond annoyance and into the emotional damage phubbing creates: disconnection, resentment, and feeling invisible in your own relationships. If you're exhausted by competing with a device—or realizing you might be doing the same—this episode names the problem and challenges what we've all been normalizing for far too long._____If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, depression, trauma, sexual abuse or feeling overwhelmed, we've compiled a list of resources at secretlifepodcast.com______ To share your secret and be a guest on the show email secretlifepodcast@icloud.com_____SECRET LIFE'S TOPICS INCLUDE:addiction recovery, mental health, alcoholism, drug addiction, sex addiction, love addiction, OCD, ADHD, dyslexia, eating disorders, debt & money issues, anorexia, depression, shoplifting, molestation, sexual assault, trauma, relationships, self-love, friendships, community, secrets, self-care, courage, freedom, and happiness._____Create and Host Your Podcast with the same host we use - RedCircle_____Get your copy of SECRET LIFE OF A HOLLYWOOD SEX & LOVE ADDICT -- Secret Life Novel or on Amazon______HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE SHOW?Tell Your Friends & Share Online!Follow, Rate & Review: Apple Podcasts | SpotifyFollow & Listen iHeart | Stitcher | Google Podcasts | Amazon | PandoraSpread the word via social mediaInstagramTwitterFacebook#SecretLifePodcastDonate - You can also support the show with a one-time or monthly donation via PayPal (make payment to secretlifepodcast@icloud.com) or at our WEBSITE.Connect with Brianne Davis-Gantt (@thebriannedavis)Official WebsiteBrianne's Coaching WebsiteInstagramFacebookTwitterConnect with Mark Gantt (@markgantt)Main WebsiteDirecting WebsiteMark Gantt Coaching WebsiteInstagramFacebook• • TwitterSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/secret-life/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Distraction kills our purpose. It keeps us from focusing on what we truly want by throwing our attention to other things. Social media offers a new type of distraction for humanity and we are experiencing the repercussions. So how do we know if our own social media habits are hurting us? How do we assess we need a break? And then how do we actually take one? Our guest on the podcast this week, Allie Smith, gives us true and firm words about how social media use can impact quality of life. She also offers some ways to take a break, or "fast", or simply to turn down the volume of the virtual noise. It takes some humility and discernment to look at our own use and how it may be distracting us to a point of trouble. If you log on to a social media account on a regular basis, this is a great listen. Today, we're talking about a new phenomenon that affects social interactions. Phubbing is something we've all likely experienced or done ourselves at some point. The term is a portmanteau of "phone" and "snubbing", and refers to the act of looking at your phone instead of paying attention to someone else in a social situation. It's becoming increasingly common as our reliance on our mobile devices continues to grow. The term was first introduced in 2012 by Australian advertising agency Maccann Erickson, as part of a campaign for the Macquarie Dictionary. The “A Word is Born” campaign was designed to demonstrate that language is constantly evolving and hence having an up-to-date dictionary is important. Where does the term come from? Why do people phub then? How can we avoid phubbing someone? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Send us a textDoom-scrolling through social media might be destroying your most important relationships without you even realizing it. In this revealing follow-up to our previous episode, we dive deep into the darker side of our digital habits and their profound impact on our connections with others.Did you know there's actually a term for ignoring someone while checking your phone? It's called "fubbing" (phone snubbing), and research shows it significantly decreases relationship satisfaction and trust. I share real examples from my therapy practice of couples whose relationships are deteriorating because one partner can't stop scrolling, even during what should be quality time together. The statistics are alarming - studies directly link increased Instagram usage with decreased relationship satisfaction and increased conflict with family members and spouses. Perhaps most concerning is how social media creates new avenues for potential infidelity, with over 50% of couples in one study reporting engaging in concerning online behaviors that damaged their relationships. But this episode isn't just about identifying problems - it's about solutions. I provide practical, actionable strategies to regain control of your digital life before it ruins your real-life connections. From removing social media apps from your home screen to setting specific time limits, these simple changes can dramatically improve your relationship satisfaction. When you realize that spending six hours daily on social media equates to 91 full days per year of scrolling instead of living, the cost becomes clear. The good news is that awareness is the first step toward change. By tracking your usage and implementing the strategies shared in this episode, you can break free from unhealthy digital habits and rebuild the meaningful connections that truly matter.Text "hypnosis" to 313-800-8510 to receive your free hypnosis guide PDF and learn more about how mindfulness techniques can help you build healthier digital habits.FIND ME:My Website: https://motorcityhypnotist.com/podcastMy social media links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/motorcityhypnotist/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCjjLNcNvSYzfeX0uHqe3gATwitter: https://twitter.com/motorcityhypnoInstagram: motorcityhypnoFREE HYPNOSIS GUIDEhttps://detroithypnotist.convertri.com/podcast-free-hypnosis-guidePlease also subscribe to the show and leave a review.(Stay with me as later in the podcast, I'll be giving away a free gift to all listeners!)Change your thinking, change your life!Laugh hard, run fast, be kind. The Psychology of Self-Injury: Exploring Self-Harm & Mental Health
In this episode, Dr. Jonas Bjärehed from Lund University in Sweden walks us through his research on nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) that he began in 2007 as part of his dissertation project. For example, he shares high prevalence rates of NSSI in Sweden (~40%) and discusses gender differences of NSSI among adolescents in 2007 compared to 2023. He also explains the results of a 10-year longitudinal study in which he surveyed individuals as adolescents about their self-harm and then surveyed the same group as adults 10 years later.Learn more about Dr. Bjärehed's research here and connect with him on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/jonasbjarehed.
