Show Notes: Have you ever thought of a financial services career? What is the career path of a financial professional? How do you move through the ranks? When it comes to terms like "analyst", "lead service advisor" or "senior advisor" what do they mean? And even more so, what do those jobs look like? Although I've talked about my fairly non-linear path as a financial professional, there are career paths that are more linear in nature. If you're contemplating a career as a financial professional, check it out to see what you might expect. Years 0-3. This job role/description can take on many names but you are basically an analyst. By definition, you will see a lot of data and you will be challenged to synthesize mainly for YOUR sake. There's not a lot of liability on you from a client standpoint because you're still learning. Owners don't want you with that level of responsibility quite yet. Tasks may include: inputting data into software, running reports, sitting in meetings and having things go over your head. Years 3-5. You might have the title as "associate, lead" advisor but you are basically a service advisor. Having been in the game for some time you may be bumped up in PAY and RESPONSIBILITY for a few reasons. Hopefully, you've deepened your knowledge and invested in yourself to earn a master's degree, designation or both. You've got more experience so you will likely have migrated from synthesizing data for YOUR sake to OTHER stakeholders like firm owners and clients. Tasks may include: running joint or solo in client meetings, managing client relationships within the business, finding new business for the firm, etc. Beyond year 5. You have a lot of flexibility. This is where some advisors with a less certain upside decide to go on their own. If you have a good opportunity you may start down a partnership track which could present you with some interesting opportunities beyond just compensation--like ownership during a succession event. Tasks will likely include a fair amount of business development for (finding and retaining client relationships), you may also wind up portfolio management responsibilities depending on your expertise, or other high-level responsibilities like operations, compliance, marketing, etc. Thanks for listening, reading and watching. Show Notes: Have you ever wished you had more time in a day? Understanding how to stop procrastinating and get work done can be liberating for you. As a financial advisor to clients and a coach to financial advisors, I've put together a system that allows me to seemingly squeeze more hours out of my day. Getting more done and being more productive will only help you procrastinate less and thereby be more effective. I share the method to my madness in the video below... Have a morning routine. I have a whole philosophy around mindset and how that dictates our result. I strongly advocate employing a system or framework to start your day. Whether it's exercise, meditation, reading, prayer, et. Some level of consistency provides you with the discipline and momentum you'll need to finish your day. My routine is made up of a mosaic of techniques like using the Life SAVERS technique introduced by Hal Elrod in The Miracle Morning. Develop a capture system. This was probably one of my biggest wins going back to 2018 was finding a way to capture my thoughts. (EXPLAIN... You know when you have an idea and then your brain goes into the stage where you can't remember it because you didn't write it down. This is why you need a capture system. Some may use sticky notes, but the goal of any capture system should be EFFICIENCY. When the idea/thought/to-do hits you capture it for processing later. This is how you keep the maximum amount of RAM available for higher-level activities. Stay out of your email. This seems a little weird, right? As a financial advisor, you're like well I might miss something from a client or prospective client. Although that can happen you can use an autoresponder during the day. If this is a concern you can turn this on when necessary. Generally speaking, though you should stay out of email because of how much a time-suck it can be. Most are there least productive stuck inside their email inbox marking things read/unread, dragging to folders and contemplating. Set a time in the morning and the end of your day to process your email. Thanks for listening, reading and watching. Are you a current or aspiring financial professional? It took me six months to get this podcast out to you guys. And I could've had it out by last year in 3 months. I kept sitting on it, trying to refine it and make it better. When, in reality, it was already perfect. I would keep comparing my podcast to other people. I would say "well, this person already talked about this topic, so I can't do it because they have more experience than me." 076 The One with the Consulting Client Episode 76: Show Notes Have you ever wondered what would happen if someone found out about your short comings? Maybe they could: expose you, take your business, tell your boss or even make fun of you. Or maybe they could help you overcome those short comings? Many get a frightened felling by the prospect of someone finding out we don’t know something, or that we are not the best at a particular area. That’s normal. The thing that makes someone get better at that area is what they do once they have that feeling. Don’t let fear or pride get in the way of making yourself better. I've been in water treatment for well over 20 years. If there is one thing I can say for sure about our industry, it is people in our industry go out of their way to help others. Time and time again, I have seen competitors help a fellow competitor just because they asked. I can't say for sure, but I don’t think this is true for other industries. So, the next time you are worried about not knowing something, remember this, there are people out there that want to help you better yourself and better the industry, don’t let pride or fear get in the way of that. Now, you want to find out what you don’t know you don’t know; you have two options: 1. read about it, 2. ask someone about it. My preference has always been both. Reading about something allows me to start to know the topic better. Where working with someone allows me to use their experience to help me with my lack of experience. When you work with someone, they may charge you for their time and access to their expertise. If they do, the term we give them is a consultant, if they don’t the term I give them is a mentor. Each have their merits as you will learn from my interview today. My guest is Brian Waymire of Innovative Water Consulting. Brian is a consulting client of mine. Join me as I talk to Brian about our relationship, why he hired me, what I did for him and how we work together today.

Kick It With Donna episode 58 – Tough Love & Acceptance Tough love and acceptance. My personal journey with my son and acceptance of a scar that runs down my abdomen. Show Notes: Have any of you gone down the tough love road with your son or daughter? I have been an enabler with my son for years. Maybe his whole life. I paid his rent, bought him furniture, took him shopping twice a year for clothes. I took him out for dinner once a week. I paid for half his tuition. The bottom line is I loved him and I didn’t want to see him struggle. Unfortunately, struggling is a normal part of life. Without it, you can’t succeed. Why did I enable? I didn’t grow up with enabling. My parents divorced when I was eleven. There was no good will between my parents. I had to work for everything I needed and wanted. This wasn’t a bad thing. It gave me a strong work ethic and strength and resilience. I’m not making excuses for why I enabled. Going back to the past helps me to understand the why. Did I enable because I wasn’t? Did I think I would be a better parent by giving my kids everything without them having to work for it? After my son graduated SMU with a degree in finance, I was sure he would get a good paying job. He never even tried. He is now begging his dad for a job, and I have become his sworn enemy. Where does this leave me? Strong in my belief that the tough love road is the only way he will learn to be financially independent. Do I miss him and still love him? Yes, I do. * * * * * From my ATV accident in 2009, I suffered a TBI and had a lacerated liver and bowel perforations. They cut me open to address the liver and bowels. This left me with a scar down my abdomen and it didn’t make my day. No more bikinis for me! I tried two different non-invasive procedures to lessen the look of it, but was disappointed in the results. My sweetheart and I went to Jamaica the first week in December. We picked an adult all inclusive resort in Ocho Rios. The reason we picked this resort was because they had an au natural beach a very short boat ride away. Neither one of us had ever gone to an au natural beach before. We teased each other about it for weeks. I felt so insecure about that scar. What if people stared? What if someone asked me what happened? Guest what? No one did. Nobody gave a crap about that scar, why should I?? I left Jamaica feeling like a new person. It took nine and a half years to finally accept that scar by going to a nude beach! Now I look at that scar as a badge of honor. I feel honored to share my personal life with you. Thank you for listening.

SHOW NOTES Have pain you don’t consider an injury but it lingers? Are you strong but constantly experience joint pain? Is your squatting form solid but your back still hurts? This is the podcast for you. Honestly this could be the most ground breaking concept you’ve ever hear as an athlete, lifter, runner or even health care clinician. I met Dr. Richard Ulm DC in Long Beach this year at the Perform Better Summit, where he was speaking about the concept of Functional Capacity, Functional Gap and Compensation Patterns. The concepts he talks about in this podcast are derived from Vladimir Janda’s Lower Cross Syndrome and furthered by the work from Pavel Kolar. Dr. Ulm takes the concepts of both and translates them to high performance movements and the compound movements we use in the gym every day. We just released a Journal on church planting and church mergers.
