This is the third-time return of one of the great thinkers and educators in human performance today, Nick Winkleman.  Nick currently serves as the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union.  I recently bumped into him at a Perform Better Summit in Orlando, Florida where he and I were speaking. He was presenting a topic seemingly out of context for the environment entitled "Zen and the Art of Coaching." I was intrigued and spent 75 minutes listening to a man talk about a subject I knew little about, but found myself moved to better understand.Later sitting by the pool, we further got into a deep discussion, and I invited him to come back to the LYM podcast to enlighten our listenership with his insights.  Nick has been through a great deal of change, some unexpected, and some expected in recent years.  His faith has helped him navigate this change, and he felt moved to share what he has learned through this unique presentation, and now in this wonderful conversation. I think you'll enjoy the ride!If you liked this EP, please take the time to rate and comment, share with a friend, and connect with us on social channels IG @Kingopain, TW @BuiltbyScott, LI+FB Scott Livingston. To be undeniable means you will not be denied. Being Undeniable is a mindset. This doesn't just happen. It is built on a foundation of always doing the hard thing first. Always stepping up when the shit hits the fan. Taking the tough road out so the ride home can be enjoyed. Everyone knows a person in their life who always takes the easy road, bails out when the going gets tough and never sees their commitments through to the end. This is the opposite of Undeniable. Stop training and go play! This episode may anger you. We have been force-fed the notion that training is supposed to be hard and you can't ever stop or you will turn into a weak fat slob. If you are an athlete you need to train every day and constantly be getting faster stronger and more powerful. Grind it out! This is ridiculous. If you are always training, when do you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour? You say you want to "peak for the Majors" but never take time off to allow your body to express its greatness. If you are a nine to fiver who trains to stay young, fit and looking lean you need to actually stop what you are doing to see if your diet and training regime actually works. If taking a break results in you gaining weight and you feeling pain and lethargy then your program sucks! Just listen to this rant and heed my advice. You are either injured or you are okay. Those are the only two states I give my athletes when they are competing. There is no grey. You are either 100% and focussed on competing at the highest level or you are injured. Injured means you are not practicing or playing. Simple as that. I know what you are thinking. "There is always grey Jason!" Not in the mind of a competitor who is putting their body on the line. Black or white. Non competitive times we can have a full spectrum of conditions. We can have everything from being in the process of healing, actively healing, removing limitations, transition toward performance, training for performance, but still never injured. Its a mindset and the mind will dictate the rate and the quality of the healing process. How about you just listen to this podcast episode where I share a ton of example and how we manage the injured athlete on a psychological level. My wife and I have this thing. We call it the ‘Executive Decision'. If one of us feels the need to plan something, buy something or do something out of the ordinary, the ‘Executive Decision' is evoked. This is only performed if the decision is so important to the person delivering it, that there can be no disagreement or discussion on the matter. It will be done! Two weeks ago my wife unleashed the full power of the ‘Executive Decision'. Executive Orders were delivered and met. What kind of Executive Orders would you deliver to those around you? Would you pull the plug and buy that Peleton you have been trying to justify yourself out of for the past year knowing full well that it would positively enhance the health of your family? Would you go on a solo trip to fulfill that bucket list item that only you would appreciate or take the family on that cross country trek you have been brining up at the end of each summer? Jealousy is seeing your unrealized dreams in others. Imposter Syndrome is trying to be someone you don't believe you deserve to be. Both of these make you look outside of yourself and compare what you see to your true self. You will only be jealous of things that you feel are attainable. You aren't going to be jealous of Bill Gates but you may be jealous of Bill in your office who got the promotion over you. Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head when you put yourself into situations over your expertise or if you feel that you have presented yourself to the world in an inaccurate way. Jealous people are usually not willing to do what it took for the person they are jealous of to accomplish the same thing. Imposter Syndrome occurs most often to high achiever perfectionists that never feel like they have mastered their craft. So which one are you? Listen and learn. On the last episode I shared some personal feelings I was experiencing that I can only describe as the "Post" Covid Blues. A lack of drive, joy , and overall motivation to attack life. I knew that it was temporary but at the same time meaningful. Now that I am on the other side of this mental state I can share some perspective on not only what I was dealing with but more importantly how to get out of it. I realized I was falling in to the trap of trying to keep up with everyone's highlight reel on their social media. Somehow I wasn't doing enough in my business, comedy and overall ability to crush life. I felt that whatever I was doing, watching or enjoying was somehow the wrong thing which left me an overwhelming sense of missing out. The key to eliminate this was to disconnect from the source of my FMO. Turn off and tune out the noise. The next step was to reconnect with positive people in my life and enjoy the simple things. I took my kids to San Diego and spent 4 days surfing with my pal Robert Yang and eating burritos till my belly burst! I got to teach Fitness Level 3 for TPI and meet a ton of enthusiastic superstar trainers and helped them enhance their skills. Just being in the ocean and doing what I was put on this earth to do, recharged my batteries. Sitting on the beach watching the waves break made me realize that each wave that broke was one that I could have rode but somehow didn't feel like I was missing out. This is because it was replaced by another wave and another wave. Even when I slept the waves kept pounding the beach at Swami's like it had since the beginning of time and will till the end. When you apply a stress to the body the body adapts. So thats what we do. We create programs that stress the body. The bigger the stress the bigger the adaptation. But what if instead of making exercises harder, we made them easier? What if you could produce the same amount of work with less effort? Wouldn't that make you a better athlete? As a strength coach I add resistance. As a performance coach I make you move that resistance with less effort. More efficiency! Like Tai Chi! Life is never black or white. We live in the grey. Rules however, need to be black and white. It is your job to decide where on the spectrum your actions will sit. We live in the greys and browns but judge others on the extremes. "Look at that asshole speeding past us like we are standing still!" while you are driving 15 over the limit. "I cant believe that person is not wearing a mask!" While yours is hanging below your nostrils. "Look at her eating a dessert, no wonder she is overweight!" while you sip your 3rd glass of wine. The problem comes when you are living a contradiction. When what you say and what you do conflict. In coaching I love extremes. I teach my athletes to feel the extremes and then execute somewhere between. Want to hit it straight? Lets learn how to hit slices and hooks. Wanna learn how to use your legs in an Olympic Lift? Do a shoulder press without the legs followed by a jump press! Want to be more open minded? Try living the other side of your belief structure for a day. They are right too! Would steroids help you play better golf? Isn't the idea of golf performance training to maximize power and speed? Every sport that requires maximal power and speed output has to watch for athletes cheating. Most common forms of performance enhancing drugs include anabolic steroids and growth hormone. Bigger, faster and stronger in a pill! So why would golf be any different? Anyone who has played competitive golf would know what it feels like to to grind over a 6 foot putt to either win or make the cut. Bad time for roid-rage! But you could technically use steroids for a cycle, get your "gains" and then ween yourself off in time for a Major. But, in today's game with FedEx points on the line each week it is critical that you compete 20 plus tournaments a year. No time for bulking season. One benefit and probably the most valuable benefit of steroids is the recovery benefits. Recover from injury, fatigue from travel or train before and after intense range sessions. But what are the side effects? What about Testosterone Replacement Therapy? Lower does of testosterone for those who have low levels of the hormone. Where do we draw the line between hormone therapy, injury recovery and performance enhancement? These questions and more answered on this week's Coach Glass Podcast! The Science of Coaching and Learning Mountain Bike Skills

BikeJames Podcast

In this podcast I explain what makes for good coaching cues when trying to teach and learn skills on your mountain bike (or anywhere else for that matter). There is some fascinating research behind the language you use when thinking about or talking about a movement skill and I hope that you’ll learn something that can make your journey towards improving your skills faster and easier.   You can stream or download it from the link below or you can find it on Itunes, Podbean, Spotify and all other major podcasting platforms.   While I go into these things in a lot more detail in the podcast, here are the notes from it:   One of the most important things you can do as a rider is to invest in your technical skills. The better your skills are the safer you will be, the faster you can ride and the less energy you will use.   However, not all methods of coaching are created equal and some methods are demonstrably better than others. There is some fascinating science around the subject of cueing and teaching movement and sports skills and it has changed the way I coach based on it.   I was first exposed to some of these concepts at a presentation I heard from a coach named Nick Winkelman at a Perform Better Summit. He talked about how he was taking a deep dive into the science behind language and cueing movement and that there were some interesting things he had found about how certain types of language and cueing were much more effective than others.   I started to apply some of the things he talked about and found them to be helpful and more effective. Last year I came across the book he wrote called The Language of Coaching and in it he spelled out everything he had found in the last few years of researching and applying the science behind coaching movement skills.   At the end of the day, learning and coaching MTB skills are no different than learning how to lift properly, throw a fastball, swing a bat or kick a soccer ball or any other movement skill and so the findings are as applicable to our sport as any other. And it is important for you to know this stuff in case you need to help another rider learn a skill and so you know how to best approach your own learning.   The idea behind coaching any movement skill is to give your brain the input it needs to figure out how that skill should feel. The skills aren’t “Step 1, Step 2, Step 3…”, they are the principles you are applying and proper application will feel different than bad application.   The goal is to move beyond Step 1, ect. and and not think about them when you ride. The best in the world aren’t thinking through the X Steps of Cornering when they are riding, they are going based on feel.   Like I tell people in BJJ class, the steps are not the technique. They are simply the window into the principles behind the technique and it is your job to use that window to learn them.   So this is why cueing is so important - they are the bridge between “knowing” and “feeling”. Good ones make that journey easier, bad ones can make it impossible for you to ever make it in the first place.   Based on Nick’s research here is what makes for good cueing:   Less is more. Most coaches tend to over cue a skill and give people too much to think about. While not science, my experience tells me that 3-5 cues per movement is the most someone can remember. The body learns best through analogies that “stick” in the person's head and that these analogies will be different for different people. People don’t think in exacting detail and analogies can help you pack a lot of cues into one. Internal vs. External Cueing. The science clearly shows that External Cues that focus on something outside of the body are more effective than Internal Cues that focus on a body part or muscles. Use Internal and External language for describing but focus on External for cueing. Direction of the cue can also have an impact (moving away from vs. moving towards something) Using tape can help you turn an Internal Cue into an External Cue   The best cues tend to find analogies that connect with the learner to describe the movement in an external way that allows quality movement with minimal thought. And remember that you need the Position before the Pattern - the best cue in the world won’t work if you can’t get into the positions you need to execute it.   Based on this, let’s look at some cues for Body Position on the bike.   Common Internal Cues include “bend at the hips”, “tuck your shoulders down and back” and the infamous “elbows out”. Alternative cues could include “push your butt back like there is a button on the wall behind you and you need to push the button”, “tuck your shoulder blades into your back pockets” or “get even pressure across your palms into the bar”. You could also use tape on the shoulders and back of the hands to help people understand how to lower their shoulders while the hips slide back while keeping their shoulders over the bar.   As you can see, it is easy to get caught up in Internal Cues because External Analogy based cues can take some more thought and they don’t all work the same so you have to be able to adjust based on the student. Take a look at how you have learned and apply your MTB skills and see how much Internal Technical based cues you use and see if you can find some External-Analogy based cues to replace them and see how it works.   I’ll be posting some videos in the coming months sharing new ways of learning MTB skills based on the science behind cueing. In the meantime, check out the www.bikejames.com, get the Atomic Strength Program and buy some Catalyst Pedals.   Until next time…   James Wilson   “All men are the same except for their belief in their own selves, regardless of what others may think of them.” - Miyamoto Musashi

Vigor Life Podcast · EP114: Training, Nutrition & Lifestyle Wisdom from 25 Years of Coaching and Writing w/ Bryan Krahn Bryan and I met almost 13 years ago at a Perform Better Summit through our mutual friend Nate Green. At that point in time Bryan was writing a lot of quality fitness articles for top publications. I really enjoyed his writing style: real world wisdom from training his real world clients. The thing about Bryan is that while he wrote for T-Nation, Mens Health, Mens Fitness, Bodybuilding.com, Ask Men, and many more, he had so much actual coaching experience and real world results with his clients. Not to mention himself. He’s 47, jacked and lean. Today he continues to write, train, and have a successful online coaching business. In this podcast episode we dive into the principles of the “How” in coaching to get the best possible results with your clients; whether face to face, or online. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN How Bryan started training people but kept it as a side hustle. Believe it or not, he didn’t believe he could make a career out of it. We discuss what changed his mind. Why it’s important to go past the sets and reps to help people truly transform. Why you MUST build a foundation and understanding the body, movement, program design, etc. AKA "the buy" in to coaching. Why you should always start with finding out a client's lifestyle before building their program. e.g. “How do they go about their day?”Why you can’t take your clients word at the height of their excitement and motivation when it comes to what they’re able to commit to. We discuss how you uncover the reality. Why it’s so much better to build on success than having to pull back when you start training clients. We share out mistakes so you can avoid making the same ones. What the ideal training frequency is for different goals, from muscle building, to fat loss, no matter your age. What the “cardio placeholder” is and how it creates better results for clients. Why walking is key to feeling better when you’re pushing your diet (and how it helps you physiologically unpack things).Whether or not age should dictate the exercises you should choose, and the formula for not getting injured and continuing to progress.Doing ramp sets, pushing to positive failure, not training for less than an hour, and other myths get put to the test by Bryan and myself. The “not so cool” modalities that pay the biggest dividends but get missed so often. How everything affects itself and why coaching is like a dance that you always have to assess.3 nutritional principles that will create success for your clients if you nail them. How to take how a person who is currently living one way and gradually make it better (and why this is the key to success). Why precision and being geeky on the numbers will most times hinder success when it comes to body transformations. Why variability is NOT a good choice when people are looking to change their habits. While simplicity and autonomy matter, creating rules for clients can be powerful. Bryan explain this concept. The power of creating wins in a client's day to build from. And much more. Vigor Life Podcast · EP110: The Language of Coaching & the Art and Science of Teaching Movement w/ Nick Winkelman I’ve followed Nick’s work for over a decade after meeting him at the Perform Better Summit speaking on the topic of coaching. After every workshop that he hosted over the years, I always left a better coach—curious and thirsty for more. Nick has a ton of experience from studying and applying his knowledge in the field. His resume is evidence of this. Nick is he currently the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. His primary role is to oversee the delivery and development of strength & conditioning and sports science across all national and provincial teams. Before working for Irish Rugby, Nick was the director of education and training systems for EXOS (formerly Athletes' Performance), located in Phoenix, AZ. As the director of education, Nick oversaw the development and execution of all internal and external educational initiatives. As a performance coach, Nick managed the speed and assessment component of the EXOS NFL Combine Development Program and supported many athletes across the NFL, MLB, NBA, National Sports Organizations, and Military. Due to his knowledge and real world application there’s no better person to have wrote the book, “The Language of Coaching”(which is truly a body of work and must for any coach). It’s what Nick and I dive into this episode—the art and science of teaching movement, helping clients move and perform better, get better results, and fulfill your potential as a coach, as well as differentiate yourself and stand out from the rest. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN What triggered Nick to write this book and what experiences in his life and coaching career drove the focus to make this such a depth of knowledge. Why you need to be good at the “What” but you must be even better at the “How.” We dive into what every coach needs to understand. The two things that separate the good coaches from the greatest coaches. The reason you still need to understand anatomy, assessment, the X’s and O’s of training as a foundation.Attention powers leaning but motivation powers attention. We talk about how to get both. The reason why a coach MUST be a great salesman. How to understand the client’s personal narrative and use it throughout every training session. We share specific examples you can use.Why most coaches talk too much and how it actually reduces results. We outline the right amount of coaching and what the best of the best do.The “Capture - Keep - Direct” concept of coaching and how it will supercharge your clients attention. The breakdown of a group training session and the “What, Why, How” concept of getting clients on point to have the best session. What the “Read Thread Review” is and how it allows clients to celebrate their wins and learn better, faster, and retain it.The 3 key things every client must have to success long-term and how YOU can help them instil them. How to find cues unique to each individual when it comes to coaching (which will help you connect to the client). The Goldilocks Principle and why you have to use it with people to make sure they don’t get bored or frustrated when training. Why you need to ask yourself how you are challenging clients externally and how you are challenging them internally. You need both every session. What “D-D-C-D-D” is and how this structure can help you organize communication.Reducing stress and anxiety for clients and putting them in a better position for performing the movement. We outline 3 different ways to do it.Strategies to build your coaching cues repertoire and system. Nick and I discuss how you can do it. And much, much more. Who I am is not about my achievements. Who I am is what's inside. - Ingrid Marcum   What I am supposed to do with my life now that I'm no longer an athlete?   Please leave us a review at http://reviewourpodcast.com Join our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group! Do the 7 Day Pal   From high school and college to professional athletes, that is a question many people find them themselves asking as they adjust to the idea that athletic competition is no longer the center of their life. This week, we have multi-sport athlete, speaker, educator, strength & conditioning coach, and movement specialist, Ingrid Marcum aka The Iron Valkyrie, sharing her own experience and how she discovered her own value and confidence during the ongoing process. As Rob speaks to Ingrid about her life as an athlete, she opens up about what it was truly like to retire from athletics and start a new path in life. But it's not that easy; this is something that she is still working on and wants to help people who are facing a similar obstacle. Not only is Ingrid's experience a common sensation for athletes but we can all relate to it via other scenarios such as being new parents, being older parents who are now empty nesters, starting a new to a job, getting ready to retire, preparing to leave the military forces or any other big transition we experience in our lives. In this episode, you will learn: Ingrid's own transition to find her true identity after ending her athletic career by doing the inner work. The power of focusing on what can you do while in the midst of struggle and setbacks. How to change your negative mindset to one accepting reality and dealing with it the best that you can. Why it takes time to discover and accept who you really are as a person. How to compete at a high level and still have a blast with it while not taking yourself too seriously. The process of being happy with where you are in life right now.   Breathing for Performance Contact Ingrid here with questions or to request more information on working with her Focused breathing work is often overlooked as a key to performance. I only learned about incorporating breathing techniques toward the end of my athletic career, but have found it to be extremely helpful for myself, my athletes and my clients. Most athletes and people, in general, have altered breathing mechanics that can affect them in various ways. But efficient breathing plays a role in mobility, stability, ability to focus, concentrate and deal with stress in addition to contributing to recovery and sleep! I hope you find these tips as valuable as I have in training myself and my athletes and clients! Feel free to contact me with questions or to learn more about how you can work with me - I’m available for seminars, workshops & speaking engagements as well as a limited number of direct individual movement work, either in person or online.     About Ingrid Marcum As Ingrid traveled the world training and competing as a multi-sport athlete, she was fortunate enough to build a career helping others reach their own fitness and athletic goals. Success is really nothing more than the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. This means that any person who knows what they are doing and where they are going is a success. Any person with a goal towards which they are working is a successful person.- Earl Nightingale   This week, All-American discus thrower, strength coach, author, and instructor, Dan John, returned to Open Sky Fitness to discuss his Ten Commandments of Fitness, the power of learning through failure, and all about his brand new book, 40 Years With a Whistle. Furthermore, you'll listen to Rob and Dan discuss: Why you should find something unique about yourself to set yourself from the rest and how to do it. How Dan tries to look at the world in a different light than everybody else. Dan's advice for getting anything you want in life and how to create one that you love by standing out. How to stay on top of your game in health and life. The differences between a pirate map and shark habits plus how Dan uses them in his life.   Please leave us a review at http://reviewourpodcast.com Join our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group! Do the 7 Day Paleo Reset     Dan John's Ten Commandments In Fitness: 1. Constant assessment 2. Constant upgrading 3. Ignore perfect 4. This isn’t moral theology—there are no “good” or “bad” exercises or systems 5. Everything works! 6. Achieving a goal versus achieving success (not the same thing…sadly) 7. After the peak is the cliff 8. Self-discipline is a finite resource 9. Fundamentals trump everything else 10. Take a moment to appreciate those who went before you.   40 Years With A Whistle by Dan John Click here to get your copy of 40 Years With a Whistle by Dan John When I was a child, people used to tell me that “your life flashes before your eyes” just before you die. As I was writing 40 Years with a Whistle, I laughed a few times out loud as my past kept flashing before my eyes. “All in all, this wasn’t a bad life, but I would prefer to live a bit longer” This book has been ruminating in my brain for a while. In 2011, I popped open my first lifting journal from 1971 and realized I had been keeping track of my workouts for 40 years. So, I wrote a two-part article on the lessons I had learned (Part One, Part Two); very simply, it was 40 lessons from 40 years. Last summer as I was coaching next to a throwing cage at St. Mary’s in Twickenham, London, a local coach asked me how I could “see all of this.” I responded, “Well, you know, I have been doing this for…” It took me a minute to figure out that I had been standing in fields, yelling in weight rooms and making half-time adjustments for the past 40 years. Maybe it’s my background in religious studies and education, but 40 years always seems to get my bells ringing. Walking back to my place that night, I kept trying to figure out how the 40 years had gone by so fast. In a flash, so to speak. Everything coalesced when Ron McKeefery asked me to write the introduction to his book, Weight Room Wisdom. As I thought about wisdom in the weight room, it was obvious that my coaching methods came directly from Dick Notmeyer and the Pacifica Bar Bell Club. But there was more to Dick than just reps and sets. He was a master storyteller. I was going through a rough time at home and his stories always showed me the path, the route, to success. Showing up every day, getting the work done and avoiding stupidity would lead ultimately to success in all areas of life. I have discovered no better truism in my life. Writing the introduction to Ron’s book made we want to tell more stories about other mentors who shaped my career. I began to dig into my past and I realized how many people have coached me. Literally, a coach is something that carries one from here to there. I have been carried many times in my life through bad times and disasters. I have arrived successfully many times and I needed to make sure I thank those who got me there.   About Dan John Dan John has spent his life with one foot in the world of lifting and throwing, and the other foot in academia. An All-American discus thrower, Dan has also competed at the highest levels of Olympic lifting, Highland Games and the Weight Pentathlon, an event in which he holds the American record. Dan spends his work life blending weekly workshops and lectures with full-time writing and is also an online religious studies instructor for Columbia College of Missouri. As a Fulbright Scholar, he toured the Middle East exploring the foundations of religious education systems. Dan is also a Senior Lecturer for St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London. His books, on weightlifting, include Intervention, Never Let Go, Mass Made Simple and Easy Strength, written with Pavel Tsatsouline as well as From Dad, To Grad. He and Josh Hillis co-authored “Fat Loss Happens on Monday.” In 2015, Dan wrote Can You Go? on his approach to assessments and basic training. In addition, Before We Go, another compilation akin to Never Let Go became an Amazon Bestseller. In early 2017, Dan’s book, Now What?, his approach to Performance and dealing with “life,” became a Bestseller on Amazon. Hardstyle Kettlebell Challenge became available in September 2017, too. The physical therapy industry is evolving and it starts with the physical therapist. Change is hard, it needs to be systemized. To know where we are going we have to know where we came from. In order for growth to occur we have to sustain multiple failures. Failure in real-time, while in the act of change, is not easy. It's messy. Even more so, change is hard when dealing with people. That's people within the physical therapy industry and people outside. Let's go over it on episode 4this episode of Therapy Insiders Podcast with guests Dr. Kelly Starrett and Dr. John Rusin. About Kelly: From: https://www.mobilitywod.com  Kelly Starrett is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of this blog, which has revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance. His 2013 release, Becoming a Supple Leopard has become a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller. This is the podcast for you. Honestly this could be the most ground breaking concept you’ve ever hear as an athlete, lifter, runner or even health care clinician. I met Dr. Richard Ulm DC in Long Beach this year at the Perform Better Summit, where he was speaking about the concept of Functional Capacity, Functional Gap and Compensation Patterns. The concepts he talks about in this podcast are derived from Vladimir Janda’s Lower Cross Syndrome and furthered by the work from Pavel Kolar. Dr. Ulm takes the concepts of both and translates them to high performance movements and the compound movements we use in the gym every day. Today’s show is with Dr. Kelly Starrett where he answers audience questions concerning how he optimizes human performance. Kelly is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of the blog Mobility WOD. Kelly’s work across these mediums has reached large audiences and revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance.   In this episode, we discuss: -Allied relationships between physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches -Do anatomical variations impact ideal posture and movement? -Why we should be taking a 30,000 foot view in our culture -How Kelly reconciles pain science and biomechanics in his physical therapy practice -How to build a large platform with the use of social media -And so much more!   Kelly advocates that every human should be incorporating a mobility regime into their day to day lives. He states, “What does it mean foundationally to be a human being, what are the things we should be able to do? We remain agnostic about the way you want to train, but you better have a movement practice or at least express full range of motion if you plan on moving fast, lifting heavy, going up and down stairs, or picking up your kid.”   Kelly stresses that enhancing movement is a continual process and every day is a movement screen. “We don't expect movement competence to happen overnight. This is a process but eventually we should all be moving better and better and better because that is what it means to acquire skills as a human. It takes 10,000 repetitions as a baby to integrate a movement pattern. That means we have some tolerance in the system to buffer some less than ideal biomechanics. Overtime we should be refining that.”   Kelly challenges the physical therapy profession to focus more attention on educating the public on preventative care. He stresses, “When you have a fever, you take some Tylenol. If you have a cold, you don’t go see your doctor. If you have a cut, we teach people basic first aid. [Physical therapists] are not doing a good job teaching basic first aid around the body to everyone.”   We also discuss Kelly’s widely successful online fitness platform and the best ways to target and gain influence in your own local community. He states, “People are looking for advocates, they are looking for help… if you set out to influence a bunch of people, you influence no one. It’s not authentic, it’s not real. Solve a set of problems and be of use to your community and people will find you.”   For more about Kelly: Kelly Starrett is a coach, physical therapist, author, speaker, and creator of [mobilitywod.com], which has revolutionized how athletes think about human movement and athletic performance.   His 2013 release, Becoming a Supple Leopard has become a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller.
