Weird Alaska, Nick Shimmin is an Australian experimental music historian, world traveller, curator, writer and renowned editor/subtitler. He operates a venue in Sydney for fringe musicians/performers (national & international) that is truly a philanthropic venture. Recently he went Aurora Borealis chasing in Alaska and so we decided to interview him there. Alaska appears to be one of the most predominant Fortean windows of high strangeness in the world. It has 11,000 islands and over 90,000 thousand square miles of wilderness. Constant U.F.O & cyrtid sightings blend harmoniously into this terrain with its long rich indigenous culture that often supports these claims. Aspasia & Jay candidly scratch the surface with Nick on just how weird Alaska is and its odd history as an American state.

The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Muscogee, Choctaw, and Seminole Nations of Oklahoma have agreed to recognize each other's licenses for hunting and fishing on their respective reservation lands. Tribal leaders say the agreement both strengthens their sovereignty and creates a more sustainable fish and wildlife management system. If you know where to look, there is an abundance of edible fungi available on trees and the forest floor. It's mushroom season in the Southwest and Native foragers are collecting beefsteaks, lobsters, and chicken of the woods. And Columbia River tribes celebrate what is among their oldest food sources: lamprey. These are the topics in the latest helping of The Menu, our regular Indigenous food show hosted by Andi Murphy. GUESTS Erik Holt (Nez Perce), chairman of the Nez Perce Tribe Fish and Wildlife Commission Jaren Bates (Diné), chef and pit master Matt Gamble, senior manager of Wildlife Conservation for the Choctaw Nation

I first fished the North Umpqua a dozen years ago, and I was way late to the game. It's been a river iconic in the steelhead community for at least a century, from before Zane Grey, to Frank and Jeannie Moore, to the present moment. And the situation in the present moment is unbelievable. After reading about it in emails and social media, I lined up a visit with Jim McCarthy of Water Watch of Oregon and Kirk Blaine of The Steamboaters and Native Fish Society. If you were upset by the social media posts, listen to the conversation, and get really mad. Then act. Sign the Native Fish Society petition, and then go ahead and write your state representatives and the governor, and ODFW. And call. And let them know that in the face of innumerable challenges to the survival of wild steelhead, a public and valuable resource that brings incalculable financial benefit to Douglas County, we are watching a small, select group bypass all meaningful regulation and oversight for their own benefit. Senators, ODFW, and the Governors contact is listed below. Jim and Kirk both volunteered their contact information for any additional information or any possible help someone can offer.Petition- https://nativefishsociety.org/action-alerts/ask-you-state-and-federal-representatives-to-stand-up-for-the-north-umpqua-riverhttps://www.dfw.state.or.us/agency/directory/contact_us.asp (https://www.dfw.state.or.us/agency/directory/contact_us.asp)https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/senate/Pages/SenatorsAll.aspx (https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/senate/Pages/SenatorsAll.aspx)https://www.oregon.gov/gov/Pages/share-your-opinion.aspxjim@waterwatch.orgkirk@nativefishsociety.org (mailto:kirk@nativefishsociety.org)

Eating too much Lamprey is thought to have killed King Henry the First of England but how much of that story is really true?
If you travel from Alaska to the Eastern Seaboard and across the pond to England, you're in lamprey country! Lampreys are an important First Food for Indigenous peoples and have a rich history across their native and invasive range. This episode is all about the famous royal lamprey pies of Gloucester, a rather recent connection to the North American Great Lakes, and a prelude to the coronation of Charles the Third.

Welcome to Shelley, Idaho! The town is located in eastern Idaho on the banks of the Snake River near the Blackfoot Mountains. John Shelley, the town's namesake, moved to the area in 1892. Shelley asked to railroad company to make a special stop to drop the supplies he ordered to build a small store and the railway agreed. The railroad later put a spur in to supply the town which was established in 1904. "The Idaho Spud Day" has been held annually in the town since 1927. The event includes a parade, a spud tug of war with a mashed potato pit, and various other activities. We hope you enjoy our trip to Shelley!

Pacific lamprey have lived on Earth for about 450 million years. When humans came along, a deep relationship formed between Pacific lamprey and Native American tribes across the western United States. But in the last few decades, tribal elders noticed that pacific lamprey populations have plummeted, due in part to habitat loss and dams built along the Columbia River. So today, an introduction to Pacific lamprey: its unique biology, cultural legacy in the Pacific Northwest and the people who are fighting to save it. (Encore)

While lamprey, with their eel-like bodies and suction cup mouths full of sharp teeth and vampire-like feeding habits might seem scary, they're actually not dangerous to humans at all. In fact, they're a very important part of the ecosystems they live in. These anadromous fish provide marine-derived nutrients to the stream systems they migrate into, and the protein-dense nutrition they provided for Native Americans may have also provided a buffer for salmon populations. We explore these amazing, older-than-the-dinosaurs fish with ODFW's Statewide Lamprey Coordinator Ben Clemens.
