We often think of PTSD as the result of dramatic, one off events, like an assault or car accident. But for many people, trauma is something they lived with every day growing up. In her bestselling book, What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma Stephanie Foo documents her process of healing from an abusive childhood. She looks at her own past through the lens of investigative journalism, drawing on her skills as former radio producer on shows like This American Life and Snap Judgement.  Stephanie and I spoke about the wildly positive reception of her book, what it was like to approach the topics of generational trauma and abuse in the Asian American community, and parenting as a person with complex trauma.

Adam Gamal (pseudonym), one of the only Muslim Arab Americans to serve in "The Activity," or "The Unit" (as the Department of Defense has asked us to refer to it) has written one of the most explosive and unlikely stories of immigration, service and sacrifice: THE UNIT: My Life Fighting Terrorists as One of America's Most Secret Military Operatives (On Sale February 20, 2024). Within the U.S. military there is a team so secretive that not only is the name of this unit classified, its members are like ghosts to the military personnel. Even the VA doesn't have them listed. This is the world Adam Gamal lived. As a young boy he fled Egypt to come to the U.S. to escape from the Muslim Brotherhood. He spoke no English, stood 5'1", 112lbs, and hardly cut the figure of a future soldier.
