What a Creep“The Disappearance of Bobby Dunbar” (1912)Season 29, Episode 1Margo & Sonia love us a creepy historical crime, and what is more puzzling than the case of Bobby Dunbar? In 1912, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar vanished during a family trip to Swayze Lake, Louisiana, sparking a massive search. Eight months later, a boy resembling Bobby was found with a handyman, William Walters, who insisted the child was Bruce Anderson, the son of Julia Anderson. Despite her claims, the Dunbars took the boy and raised him as Bobby. In 2004, DNA testing confirmed he was not biologically related to the Dunbars, meaning the real Bobby Dunbar's fate remains unknown, making this one of history's most haunting cases of mistaken identity.Sources for this episode:RankerWikipedia This American Life ep 352BuzzFeed VideoMorbid PodcastCountry Roads MagazineAll That's InterestingIFL Science Trigger warning: Child abduction Be sure to follow us on social media. Two decades before the Lindbergh baby became America's most famous missing child, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar, went missing in Opelousas, Louisiana, setting in motion one of the strangest kidnapping stories in the nation's history. In the summer of 1912, the Dunbar family took a trip to Swayze Lake in St. Landry Parish, where Bobby wandered off and disappeared. The boy's disappearance was followed by an eight-month search across the American south, until Bobby was ostensibly found in the company of William Walters, a handyman traveling through the Mississippi. Bobby's parents were elated to have their son back after such a long absence, but the problem was, very few people seem convinced that the boy was in fact Bobby Dunbar. After extensive news coverage of the search, Walters' trial for kidnapping, and the joyful return of Bobby to his family, interest in the case began to fade, but for the Dunbar family, questions remained about Bobby's identity. Had the Dunbars, in their desperation to find their son, unintentionally kidnapped someone else's child? On August 23, 1912, Percy and Lessie Dunbar loaded their two young sons and left their Opelousas home for a camping trip at nearby Swayze Lake. Four-year-old Bobby Dunbar wandered away from the family's tent and disappeared that night. During a search, a boy matching Bobby's age and description was found. Assuming this was the missing boy, “Bobby” was returned to the Dunbar family despite protests from a woman claiming to be the boy's mother. In 1912 a four-year-old boy named Bobby Dunbar went missing in a swamp in Louisiana. Eight months later, he was found in the hands of a wandering handyman in Mississippi. In 2004, Bobby Dunbar's granddaughter discovered a secret beneath the legend of her grandfather's kidnapping, a secret whose revelation would divide her own family, bring redemption to another, and become the answer to a third family's century-old prayer.
In 1912, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar went missing in the Louisiana swamps. After an eight-month search that electrified the country and destroyed Bobby's parents, the boy was found, filthy and hardly recognizable. A wandering piano tuner was arrested and charged with kidnapping— a crime then punishable by death. But when a destitute single mother came forward from North Carolina to claim the boy as her son, not the lost Bobby Dunbar, the case became a high-pitched battle over custody—and identity—that divided the South. My guest, Tal McThenia, first introduced listeners of NPR's This American Life to this case in 2008. A few years later he co-wrote, along with Margaret Dunbar Cutright (the granddaughter of Bobby Dunbar) the definitive book about this historical whodunnit, called "A Case for Solomon: Bobby Dunbar and the Kidnapping That Haunted a Nation". A young child goes missing, the whole country starts looking for him, and eventually, the family gets him back, only to realize that he wasn't their kid after all. Bobby Dunbar was a four-year-old boy who had gone on a fishing trip with several members of his family, along with family friends. When Bobby goes missing one day in 1912, his family searches for him for weeks, but finds no evidence of an animal that has eaten him, someone who kidnapped him, or any sort of accident. There's just...nothing. Eight months later, a telegram comes in stating that a boy who looks like Bobby was spotted in Mississippi. Bobby's mother is hesitant to say for sure that this is her missing son, but soon finds birthmarks and other signs that this boy is Bobby. She is ultimately certain that her lost son has been found. On the other side, you have a different mother claiming that the boy is actually HER son, a boy by the name of Bruce Anderson. DNA evidence comes in decades later to solve a part of this mystery and determine if the boy found was actually Bobby Dunbar. August 23, 1912 was a day that changed the fates of two families for generations to come. Two women greiving the loss of their son, are claiming that the same child is in fact that son!!! So is Lessie Dunbar or is the little boy really Bruce Anderson, Julia's son?
This week, CiCi dives into the case of Bobby Dunbar, a 4 year old boy who went missing during a family fishing trip on Swayze Lake in Louisiana. After the boy's body was never recovered, the family concluded that Bobby must have been kidnapped and after 8 months, they finally found him and brought him home. The only problem is that another woman claimed this was her son. Who was actually recovered? Bobby, or Bruce?
Hello and welcome back! In this week's episode, Kevin enjoys a drink with a terrible name, Hailey grants listeners two new vocabulary words, and Hailey tells the story of Bobby Dunbar. Bobby was just 4 years old when he vanished from his family's campsite. Despite an expansive search, it took 8 months, and plenty of blood sweat and tears to bring him home. But soon after his arrival, a woman came claiming that the child was HER son and not Bobby Dunbar. Who was telling the truth? Hang on tight. In August 1912 while on a family camping trip, four-year-old Bobby Dunbar wandered away from his family's tent, presumed dead or kidnapped. Almost eight months later, “Bobby” was found, but many remained suspicious of his true identity and the circumstances of his disappearance. Would you know if your child was replaced by a look-a-like? Plus, sometimes hearing voices in your head might save your life, not unlike the case of a woman who self-diagnosed her own brain tumor. Four-year-old Bobby Dunbar disappeared during a family trip to Louisiana's Swayze Lake in the August of 1912. Everyone from his family to friends to strangers searched the lake for a week, using dynamite to unsettle the water in case it would bring his body to the surface. When they couldn't find him in the lake, his parents were left wondering what happened — did he drown in the water or was he out there somewhere, potentially in danger? After eight months of sending out his photo to neighboring states and searching orphanages, the Dunbars got a telegram about a boy in Mississippi who looked just like their son. They weren't sure if it was Bobby when they first saw the boy, but they became certain soon after and took him back home with them. To almost everyone, this seemed like the happy ending to long, awful situation. There was just one loose end: a woman named Julia Anderson from North Carolina said they didn't have Bobby, that they had her son Bruce and she was his mother instead. But before we get into this episode's main story, Zoey is here with a list of odd laws from every state we cover in this week's Something Southern.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/05/10/the-wrong-child/

One of the horrible truths of our world is that every day, people go missing. It's heart-wrenching to the loved ones and many times, the missing are never found. But in some miraculous cases the missing are returned. In most of these scenarios, this is the best thing that could possibly happen. But in some cases, there are often more questions than answers. Sometimes when we look deeper, the cases are just weirder. In this episode we are going to present the case of Bobby Dunbar and the case of Danny Filippidis. What on Earth happened when they were missing? All I can guarantee is it was some weird. Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages.
