Our knowledge and understanding of the scripture is critical to our knowledge of God, our own self, and the ever-changing world and its culture. The scripture, also known as the Word of God, is the culmination of what we know as the holy Bible. It is written for the profiting of its readers. The Bible was written and put together within a vast space of centuries with the utmost accuracy, orchestrated and supervised by the Holy Spirit in a manner that gives answers, clear direction and sights to any question we can ever imagine as humans. However, since the word of God is spiritually inspired, it will take those whose spirits have been redeemed and awakened from spiritual blindness, which is the result of sin nature we inherited, to appreciate the value of God's word to pay close attention to it, in a manner that God can speak to them through his written word. Our insight into God's word will ultimately define and determine how far we will go, not just in a spiritual walk, but also in our general walk and interaction with life. The reason for this is that God‘s word, or any other word, shapes the ideologies that determine the philosophy and outlook to life. Hence, if we don't have a solid understanding of what God says, how the Father intends to be approached, we will not only live in ignorance and confusion, but also in every likelihood that we will be deceived by the trickery of the enemy. Studying the word of God to me is more than just acquiring information and theological knowledge, as well as theology is a profound part of getting to know God's word and will. 2 Timothy 2:15. His mother was a professional musician, and his father was a pastor.He was enamored with music and loved God's work. He nurtured these interests as he grew up, joining band and starting a bible study at school.In college, Ben studied music. He truly enjoyed it and fell in love.However, he also wanted to share God's Word and make music for a purpose. Everything followed when she started knowing Jesus.Ben and Alison went through a deep loss when Alison had a miscarriage. This tragic experience encouraged them to move.They were able to achieve all they had set out to do. They built their little kingdom despite all they've lost.[17:55] Sharing God's Word with FamilyBen and Alison have been married for almost 20 years with 2 teenagers and a 3-year-old toddler.After the traumatic miscarriage, Alison looked for a community to lean on when she should have been clinging to God's Word.Her children became her community. They had deep conversations and often talked about faith and spirituality.Homeschooling their children became a way to have these deep conversations.In the past, Alison was more self-focused. It was a big shift for her to focus on God's Word and the spiritual growth of their children.[24:44] Surrendering and Trusting GodAlison had a lot of fear and anxiety. The miscarriage helped her realize she was finding safety in the wrong places.She decided to try again and trust in God. No matter the outcome, she knew He would always walk with her.Alison [25:37]: “God isn't just good because good things happen in our lives. He's good regardless.”It's easier, more peaceful, and beneficial to surrender to God. Let go of the fear and trust that God will do the best thing for you.If the pregnancy didn't come through, then they trusted the Lord to make something great out of it.They pray that their baby grows up to love God's work and her family.[29:47] God ProvidesGod is the provider of all things. It's not just material things; He also provides the reasons and the story.Stop running around trying to figure out what to do with your life. You are part of God's plan.It's important to surround yourself with people who will redirect you to God's truth.You have two options in life: the way of life or the way of death. Using the gift of wisdom, make decisions that lead you to life.Reagan [35:43]: “Even though we go through really hard and traumatic things, when you find your way, and you find the truth tellers in your life, and you read the truth of God's word, it is literally the only thing that can sustain us.”[36:52] The Importance of Knowing God's WordNowadays, the Church often perpetuates a focus on self-help. God's Word should guide biblical counseling.Their eldest daughter had recently been going to self-focused Christian counseling. However, she started feeling better once she focused on God's Word.You can address the symptoms, but it's God's Word that gets you to the root cause. Otherwise, the cycle of deception continues.Those who know God find calm and peace.[44:09] Facing Spiritual Warfare with God's WordYou can be a Christian without knowing God's Word or following Jesus.Studying the Bible can make a difference in your life. A personal small Bible study can guide you and allow you to learn from people who may know more.When he was younger, Ben experienced spiritual warfare through nightmares. These prevented him from calling Jesus' name.This was spiritual warfare he could only address through spiritual powers. Understanding God's Word can give you this power.Listen to the full episode to find out what Ben and Alison share about spiritual warfare and the Bible.Ben [52:08]: “I think that's one of the things that's wonderful about God's Word. He will be faithful to help you figure that stuff out.”[01:01:22] Speaking with God through His WordStarting to study and understand the supernatural in the Bible can be intense.Studying God's Word can help you understand and identify what truly lines up with Him. It can also help you understand where you need to go in life.If you think God isn't speaking to you, remember that He has always spoken to you through His Word.Sometimes God can speak directly to you. Alison felt fear during her pregnancy, but she trusted God and heard Him speak to her.[01:06:36] Passing Faith to Your ChildrenIt's important to work together with your children.Try to be less distracted. Be available to talk with your kids whenever they want to talk about the spiritual.The distractions have to go. That's one of the reasons Ben and Alison homeschooled their children.Less is more. Less allows for more opportunities for the things that matter.Their children could see them engage with God's Word. They can talk about it with each other.[01:10:23] Advice from the CalhounsOne motto of another artist is faith, family, and freedom. Sticking to these simple things can guide you.Don't forget to give to God's work. Whenever the Calhouns have a big financial decision, they choose to give more and trust the Lord to work it out.Find something worth fighting for — it can bring you a lot of life.Alison operates with the end in mind. Invest in your own flesh and blood; they will receive your legacy.Be careful of power and influence. A Growing Church is Devoted to Studying God's Word.

Or they may read bits and pieces, one verse or passage at a time but struggle to apply it to their lives. There are so many reasons why this is true, but it is possible to start today. Culture offers up quick fixes that leave us unsatisfied and still hungry for fulfillment. God's word fills us up, but creates a thirst for more of Him. Don't mistake reading God's Word for Studying God's Word. They are not the same. As you begin your quiet time each day, do you come hungry to hear from the Lord? God is not confusing or far off — He is near and abiding. And His Word is living and active… and applicable too! Most of us spend our days shoving food and other fillers into the hurts and holes of our lives. But nothing works to make us whole (or holy) other than our Bibles. Pinpointing what it is we are turning to, in lieu of turning to God in the pages of His Word, can help us to lay that thing down for a short season and turn instead to the only thing that can satisfy and sanctify us! Pinpointing and laying down all of the false-fillers is a lot like laying down false-idols. And once the throne is vacant it is a JOY to invite the rightful King to take His place. I've also become aware that all the scrolling and eating and movie watching and shopping can all fall under the umbrella of consuming… ingesting… gobbling… eating. And I know that the more I ingest things that won't ever satisfy the less I turn to God's Word — the only thing that can! I want to hunger and thirst for God and His righteousness and His Word more than anything else! First and foremost every day! But the other stuff gets in the way. No book has ever been written, nor ever will be, that holds the power to sway a human heart toward the Word of God more than the Bible itself. Pinpoint what it is you turn to when you are worn out or overwhelmed, then lay it down and pick up your Bible. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus extended this invitation, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” When we stop pushing all the stuff into our lives and bring Him back into the center of our lives… he gives us His rest and His joy and a very real sense of His loving nearness! “We are not powerless to change when we hold a Bible in our hands, for that Bible holds the power to change us.” The book will come to an end, but the Word of God never ends. Introduction      In 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Paul set forth 15 qualifications for church leaders. In Titus 1:5-9, he presented 17 qualifications. Though similar in most ways, the two lists differ slightly. Each list served either as a general guideline, or was specifically tailored by the apostle Paul for each church-group to whom he was writing. I tend to think Paul was providing a general list of characteristics that one would like to see when considering a person as an elder in the church. Paul's list of qualifications for overseer in 1 Timothy 3:1-7      Paul moved from a discussion about authority in the church (1 Tim 2:11-12) to the office and qualities of an overseer in the local assembly. Paul said, “It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do” (1 Tim 3:1). The term overseer (ἐπισκοπή episkope) refers to “engagement in oversight, supervision, of leaders of Christian communities.”[1] The term overseer appears to be synonymous with elder (πρεσβύτερος presbuteros) and pastor (ποιμήν poimen), as these terms are used interchangeably in the New Testament (Acts 20:17, 28; Tit 1:5-7; 1 Pet 5:1-3). Beginning his list of qualities for overseers, Paul states: "An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money. 4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?), 6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. 7 And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil." (1 Tim 3:2-7) Above reproach (ἀνεπίλημπτος anepilemptos) means there must be nothing observable in an overseer's life that others can take hold of and legitimately criticize him for. This requires sound doctrinal thinking by the church and time to observe the candidate. Sadly, Satan will always have those who oppose a good candidate, and where a genuine flaw cannot be found, one can be manufactured, in order to disqualify an elder candidate. This sort of false attack was certainly true for the Lord Jesus, whom the Pharisees and Sadducees had called “a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!” (Matt 11:19). Surely, their estimation should not count. The husband of one wife (μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἄνδρα), is literally, a one-woman man. This phrase is somewhat ambiguous. Certainly it prohibits polygamy. I take the phrase to mean the overseer must have his affections directed solely to his wife. However, some Bible teachers take the phrase to include men who have been divorced and remarried (Wiersbe). According to Duane Litfin, “The reasoning behind this view is usually that divorce represents a failure in the home, so that even though a man may be forgiven for any sin involved, he remains permanently disqualified for leadership in the congregation (cf. vv. 4–5; 1 Cor 9:24–27).”[2]One must consider this matter carefully, for though the church must select qualified men to serve as overseers, it must also guard against weaponizing these qualifications to rule out good candidates. Wisdom is needed. Temperate (νηφάλιος nephalios) “pertains to being very moderate in the drinking of an alcoholic beverage, temperate, sober.”[3] The Bible does not condemn drinking alcohol (John 2:1-10; 1 Tim 5:23), but it does prohibit drunkenness (Eph 5:18; cf. 1 Cor 11:21). This is because alcohol can impair a person's thinking and behavior, which must always be under control. A church elder must always be able to think, and to think doctrinally in order to lead effectively. Prudent (σώφρων sophron) “pertains to being in control of oneself, thoughtful, self-controlled.”[4] This means he must take his work in the church seriously and be disciplined. Of course, this does not mean he is not friendly or jovial, for one with a dour personality will not last long in church leadership. Respectable (κόσμιος kosmios) means he must be orderly. Wiersbe states, “The pastor should be organized in his thinking and his living, as well as in his teaching and preaching.”[5] There is a discipline and ordered structure to the life of a church elder. Hospitable (φιλόξενος philoxenos) means he must love strangers. Elders should be friendly toward unbelievers (Rom 12:13; Heb 13:2), who must feel welcome in the local assembly, but also to Christians who might be traveling from city to city and looking for Christian fellowship (3 John 1:5-8). Able to teach (διδακτικός didaktikos) means he is skilled to teach others. This requires years of training and practice as a communicator of God's Word. There's no place for sloppiness in handling God's Word, and judgment will fall upon the one who does (Jam 3:1). Not addicted to wine (πάροινος paroinos) pertains “to one who is given to drinking too much wine.”[6] This touches on the matter of maintaining self-control in one's thoughts and actions, which is forfeited when intoxicated. The Bible clearly prohibits and condemns drunkenness (Eph 5:18; 1 Cor 11:21). Not pugnacious (πλήκτης plektes) refers to a person who is “a striker, one apt to strike; a quarrelsome, violent person.”[7] Such behavior is characteristic of a bully, and there's no place for bullies in the church. Charles Spurgeon used to tell his students, “Don't go about the world with your fist doubled up for fighting, carrying a theological revolver in the leg of your trousers.” Gentle (ἐπιεικής epieikes) describes the believer who is “not insisting on every right of letter of law or custom, yielding, gentle, kind, courteous, tolerant.”[8] Where God's Word is silent, the overseer will make room for others in the church to exercise their preferences. Peaceable (ἄμαχος amachos) means the Christian leader must “not be disposed to fight; not quarrelsome or contentious.”[9] He is one who, when possible, prefers peace in all situations. Elsewhere, Paul said, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men” (Rom 12:18). Free from the love of money (ἀφιλάργυρος aphilarguros) means “not fond of money, not covetous, generous.”[10] The one who loves money might be tempted to twist or compromise God's Word lest it offend a would-be giver. The writer to the Hebrews states, “Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have” (Heb 13:5a). A good family manager. Paul states, “He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity 5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)” (1 Tim 3:4-5). This means he must manage his home well, controlling his children—as best he can—while not throwing his dignity out the window. Paul's rationale is that if he cannot manage his own home life, he will not be able to manage the local church. According to Wiersbe, “This does not mean that a pastor must be married, or, if married, must have children. However, marriage and a family are probably in the will of God for most pastors. If a man's own children cannot obey and respect him, then his church is not likely to respect and obey his leadership.”[11] The overseer must a mature believer. Paul states the elder must “not be a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil” (1 Tim 3:6). According to Litfin, “An overseer must not be a recent convert (neophyton, “neophyte”), lest his rapid advancement to leadership fill him with pride and conceit, and he experience the same kind of judgment that the devil incurred for his pride.”[12] He must have a good reputation with outsiders. Paul closed this section, saying, “And he must have a good reputation with those outside the church, so that he will not fall into reproach and the snare of the devil” (1 Tim 3:7). Thomas Constable states, “A good reputation with those outside the church is essential so that the elder will not bring reproach on the name of Christ and the church. Paul saw this as falling into disgrace and the snare of the devil.”[13] Warren Wiersbe asks, “Does he pay his bills? Does he have a good reputation among unsaved people with whom he does business? (see Col 4:5 and 1 Th 4:1).”[14] Additional Matters      Biblically, it appears God is the primary Person who selects elders to serve in His church. The Apostle Paul, when speaking with the elders at Ephesus, said, “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood” (Acts 20:28). William MacDonald states: "Only the Holy Spirit of God can make a man an elder. This is clear in Acts 20:28. The Holy Spirit lays a burden on a man's heart to take up this important work and also equips him for it. It is impossible to make a man a bishop by voting him into office or by ordaining him. The responsibility of the local assembly is to recognize those men in its midst who have been made elders by God the Holy Spirit (1 Th 5:12-13). It is true that we find the appointment of elders in the book of Titus, but there it was simply a matter of Titus' singling out those men who had the qualifications of elders. At that time, the Christians did not have the NT in printed form, as we have it today. Therefore, they did not know what the exact qualifications for elders were. So Paul sent Titus to them with this information and instructed Titus to set apart those men who had been raised up by the Spirit of God for the work. The recognition of elders by a local assembly might be quite informal. It often happens that Christians instinctively know who their elders are because they have acquainted themselves with the qualifications of elders in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1."[15]      The Bible does not specify how many elders may serve in a church, or even what process is to be followed concerning their appointment to office. The church has the liberty to follow a relaxed or formal policy depending on its membership. Other qualifications for church elders are as follows: They consist of men only (1 Tim 3:2; Tit 1:6; cf. 1 Tim 2:12-14). They solved doctrinal problems in the church through biblical discussion and research (Acts 15:1-11, cf. Acts 16:4). They worked with “the whole church” in choosing men to send on a missionary journey (Acts 15:22). This is important because elders lead from the front, not the top. They work within the church, and with the church, serving as examples to the church, and not “lording” their authority over others (1 Pet 5:3). They received biblical instruction from Paul regarding the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27). Today the elder spends the majority of his time studying Scripture so he can be spiritually prepared to meet his obligations as a church leader. Studying God's Word is important, for he cannot live what he does not know. They shepherded the church through general oversight (Acts 20:17; 28). They guarded against false teachers and their false doctrines, guiding believers into God's will, and feeding the church with the truths of Scripture (Acts 20:28-32; Eph 4:11-14, cf. Jer 3:15). All the elders were leaders (1 Th 5:12-13; Heb 13:7, 17), but only some functioned at “preaching and teaching” (1 Tim 5:17; cf. Eph 4:11-14). They were supported financially by those who benefitted from their oversight and teaching (Gal 6:6; 1 Tim 5:17-18). The elders offered support and prayer to fellow believers who were suffering (Jam 5:14). The first elders in Scripture had their place in the church by apostolic appointment. First, Paul appointed elders in Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch (Acts 14:21-23), and later, he commanded Titus to appoint elders in the church (Tit 1:5). Since we do not have apostles today, authority does not rest in a person, but Scripture alone. Church leadership is still appointed by God (Acts 20:28; cf. Eph 4:11), and the church recognizes leadership because they measure up to the qualifications set forth in Scripture (1 Tim 3:1-7; Tit 1:5-9).      The role of elder/overseer/pastor is very challenging. Though there are no perfect pastors, they must display a level of maturity and godly qualities to be eligible for leadership service in the local church. Pastors have huge responsibilities and often bear great burdens for those in the church (2 Cor 11:29). Today, a qualified pastor will devote many years to learning God's Word, which requires great discipline and financial cost, both for his education and library. Afterwards, he will often accept pay well below what he could have earned if he'd chosen another profession. Many pastors serve bivocationally (Paul was a tent maker who often paid for his own needs; Acts 18:3; 20:34), and some work purely as volunteers.      Continuing the reason for God's judgments on Israel, Moses stated, “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; 48 therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you” (Deut 28:47-48). In this statement we are reminded that God's cursings would come upon His people “Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and a glad heart” (Deut 28:47a). Wiersbe comments: "It's quite depressing to read this long list of calamities, especially when you realize that Israel experienced all of them at one time or another and that innocent people suffered because of the sins of the guilty. Not only Deuteronomy 28, but also Jeremiah's Book of Lamentations is a solemn reminder that it doesn't pay to rebel against God and try to have your own way. And what was the reason for all this trouble? “Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and gladness of heart for the abundance of all things” (Deut 28:47)."[1]      One would expect that God's magnificent kindness to Israel would result in humility and a natural expression of gratitude and service to Him. However, it appears in her prosperity and in her abundance of all things, that Israel would forget the Lord and pursue her gifts rather than her Giver. This language harkens back to Moses' previous words in which he warned the nation not to forget God because of His goodness (Deut 6:10-12). By failing to serve God with joy and gladness, Israel would bring God's judgment, and the result would be that the nation would serve its enemies whom the Lord would send against her. Israel's enemies, like all enemies, would be cruel. Israel would know hunger, thirst, nakedness, and a “lack of all things”, which are indicators of poverty. And this will be God's judgment upon them, as He will place an iron yoke on their neck until they are brought down. Most yokes were made of wood, so an iron yoke would be heavier and impossible to break. At a later time in Israel's history, Jeremiah used this language to explain God's judgment upon those who would not submit to Babylon (Jer 27:6-8).      God's judgment would come in the form of a foreign power whom He would raise up to attack Israel. Moses said, “The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you shall not understand, 50 a nation of fierce countenance who will have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young” (Deut 28:49-50). This reveals that God is the sovereign Lord of the universe, that all nations are ultimately under His control, and He will raise up one and bring down another. The Assyrians are described as an eagle that swoops down with destruction on Israel (Hos 8:1), and the Babylonians when they were used by God to destroy Moab (Jer 48:40). Daniel Block offers this insightful comment: "Verses 49–50 characterize Yahweh's agent of doom with five bold brushstrokes, each of which intensifies the terror of Israel's demise. (1) The enemy will come “from the ends of the earth.” What is near is familiar; what is distant is mysterious and fearful. (2) The enemy will be fast. Like an eagle swooping down on his prey, he will attack his targets suddenly and without warning. (3) The enemy will speak an unintelligible language. This rules out negotiations and contributes to horror. (4) The enemy will be “fierce-looking” (lit., “strong of face”), which expresses both the terror of a victim and the resolve of the attacker. (5) The enemy will be heartless, showing no respect for the aged or mercy toward the young."[2]      Moses' description continued, saying, “Moreover, it shall eat the offspring of your herd and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed, who also leaves you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the increase of your herd or the young of your flock until they have caused you to perish” (Deut 28:51). Here we observe a kind of scorched-earth tactic where the enemy would devastate the land and leave nothing for the inhabitants. And this would envelop the whole land, as “It shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it shall besiege you in all your towns throughout your land which the LORD your God has given you” (Deut 28:52). Israel would make the mistake of trusting in its own fortified cities and abilities when they came under attack, but these would prove useless against the forces God would raise up to defeat them. If Israel would have maintained their walk with the Lord, He would have been their protection against all enemy forces (Deut 28:7). But turning away from God meant leaving the fortress of His love and care.      Then, in horrific detail, Moses explained the degree to with Israel would act when being starved while under siege, saying, “Then you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you” (Deut 28:53). When all food portions had run dry, Israelites would resort to cannibalism, even eating their own children. Moses continued, saying, “The man who is refined and very delicate among you shall be hostile toward his brother and toward the wife he cherishes and toward the rest of his children who remain, 55 so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, since he has nothing else left, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in all your towns” (Deut 28:54-55). Eugene Merrill states: "The intensity of the distress is emphasized by the fact that parents would eat their children, their only hope of earthly remembrance and posterity (v. 53). And not just the most crass or barbaric among them would do so. The gentlest soul would abandon all restraint and loyalty and in his hour of self-preservation would feed upon his own precious loved ones (v. 54), not retaining a shred of generosity toward others in similar plight (v. 55). The basest human (or animal?) instincts would prevail when choice had to be made between one's own life and another's."[3] Having discussed the gentle man who engages in cannibalism, Moses said of the gentle woman: "The refined and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and refinement, shall be hostile toward the husband she cherishes and toward her son and daughter, 57 and toward her afterbirth which issues from between her legs and toward her children whom she bears; for she will eat them secretly for lack of anything else, during the siege and the distress by which your enemy will oppress you in your towns." (Deut 28:56-57) Eugene Merrill states: "Lest it be thought that the maternal side of womanhood might preclude such abhorrent behavior, the text goes on to reveal, in terms that stagger the imagination, that women so refined and genteel as to avoid touching the ground with unshod feet would not hesitate to consume their own offspring (vv. 56–57a). In fact, they would keep for themselves their newborn infants and even the afterbirth even if it meant that their husbands and other children had to do without and starve. These they would hoard and eat secretly to preserve themselves in that day of unspeakable horror."[4]      These horrible acts of cannibalism occurred among the ten northern tribes of Israel during the Aramean siege by Ben-hadad II circa 850 B.C. (2 Ki 6:24-30), and the two southern tribes of Judah when they were besieged by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. (Jer 19:9; Ezek 5:9-10; Lam 2:20; 4:10).      What follows in Moses' speech is a summary statement that all the curses described herein would come upon God's covenant people if they turned away from Him. Moses said, “If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law which are written in this book, to fear this honored and awesome name, the LORD your God” (Deut 28:58). Serving God and experiencing His blessings was not a guessing game. Moses had clearly communicated “all the words of this law”, which words, he said, were “written in this book” for Israel to know and follow (Deut 28:58a). Moses had referenced the words of the law before (Deut 17:18-19; 27:2-3, 8, 26), and he would reference them again as being “written” for posterity to study, understand, and follow (Deut 28:61; 29:20-21, 27; 30:10; 31:24, 26). Studying God's Word and walking in obedience meant they would fear and honor (כָּבַד kabad) His “awesome name”, which name embodied all that God is in character and conduct. According to Kalland, “This glorious and awesome name speaks of his essence, character, and reputation as the God of the promises, the true and living God revealed to the people, particularly at Horeb (Sinai).”[5] If Israel would not honor God's name, “then the LORD will bring extraordinary plagues on you and your descendants, even severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses” (Deut 28:59).      Unfortunately, throughout Israel's history, the book of Deuteronomy was rejected and Israel fell into all sorts of sinful behavior and judgment. It was during the reign of Josiah (2 Ki 22:1), that a copy of Deuteronomy was found in the temple (2 Ki 22:8-20), and the land was largely purged of idolatry and the temple restored to its proper place of function (2 Ki 23:1-25). However, after Josiah died in 609 B.C., the four subsequent kings all did evil in the sight of the Lord until eventually Judah and Jerusalem were destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C.      The disobedience of Israel meant they would suffer diseases, sicknesses, and plagues, some of which Israel had seen God bring upon Egypt, but also included other maladies not mentioned here. Moses said, “He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt of which you were afraid, and they will cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague which, not written in the book of this law, the LORD will bring on you until you are destroyed” (Deut 28:60-61). Merrill states, “the Hebrew construction in v. 61 allows the sickness to be viewed as a divinely ordained instrument of judgment, not just an illness of happenstance or of no apparent purpose.”[6] And such illnesses would decimate the nation's population, as Moses said, “Then you shall be left few in number, whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, because you did not obey the LORD your God” (Deut 28:62). Whereas God had promised to bless the nation with a multitude of people, here the curse would cause their numbers to shrink, making them smaller and smaller as His judgments advanced, and this until they were destroyed.      God is righteous, and it pleases Him to bless His people when they walk in righteous conformity with His directives. However, it also pleases the Lord to act righteously to judge His people when they disobey Him. Moses said, “It shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you will be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it” (Deut 28:63). God prefers to bless and not discipline; however, His attribute of righteousness demands He act justly toward His people. Block correctly observes: "Moses begins by speaking shockingly of a change in Yahweh's disposition toward his people. Where previously Yahweh had delighted in causing Israel to flourish, now he will delight in their destruction. The notion is troubling to modern readers, but read within the ancient conceptual environment, it contrasts sharply with the notions of Israel's neighbors. Where others attributed such calamities to demonic forces and hostile deities, Yahwism refuses to take the easy way out. These statements reflect the other side of Yahweh's passion: When his people trample underfoot his grace, his passions will be ignited against them."[7]      Not only would God remove Israel from their land because of idolatry, but He would scatter them among the pagan nations to worship and experience what they sought to elevate above God. Moses said, “Moreover, the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known” (Deut 28:64). Of course, the reality is that these idols are dumb—wood and stone—and are foreign to the living God who revealed Himself to their patriarchs.      The sad reality is that idols offer no real rest from the troubles of this world because they cannot deliver. Moses said, “Among those nations you shall find no rest, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul” (Deut 28:65). There would be no rest physically “for the soul of your foot”, and there would be no rest mentally or emotionally, as they would have a heart that constantly trembles, eyes that never fail to see trouble, and a soul that despairs all that life offers. Merrill states, “External transience would be matched by internal, emotional upheaval. The mind would be anxious (lit., “there will be a quaking heart”), the eyes would fail because of longing (cf. 28:32), and the heart (nepeš; i.e., the inner being as a whole) would become faint. The very lives of the people would be hung up before them, that is, would be in suspense.”[8]      The state of their difficult condition would be constant. Night and day they would have no confidence about their condition. Moses said, “So your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you will be in dread night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life” (Deut 28:66). When blessed by God, Israelites would experience long life in the land of blessing. However, when cursed by God, they would never know from day to day whether their lives would be safe. They would be in a constant state of anxiety.      Internal fears and stress from life's experiences would cause them great anguish. Concerning their mental state throughout the day, Moses said, “In the morning you shall say, ‘Would that it were evening!' And at evening you shall say, ‘Would that it were morning!' because of the dread of your heart which you dread, and for the sight of your eyes which you will see” (Deut 28:67). Here is psychological and emotional disequilibrium that is caused by the uncertainty of a troubled life.      Slavery and subjugation would be the end result, as Moses said, “The LORD will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way about which I spoke to you, ‘You will never see it again!' And there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer” (Deut 28:68). These would become the lowest of slaves, regarded as so worthless that no one, not even their former captors in Egypt, would want to buy them. Deuteronomy 28:68 shows a final reversal of all God's blessings as the Lord, who had once brought them out of slavery in Egypt, would return them to their former captors, only in a worse state than before. According to Craigie, “In the blessing of God, the people had been brought out of Egypt and freed from that old servitude. In the curse of God, they would return to Egypt once again, and there they would experience the depth of humiliation; in offering themselves for sale, they would be deemed by the Egyptians to be substandard, not even worth making into slaves.”[9]      All of these cursings could have been avoided. None of them had to happen. In fact, God desired to bless His people, and all they had to do was to know His Word and walk in it, keeping covenant with the Lord. These curses served as a warning of the consequences of turning away from the Lord and pursuing a life of sinful rebellion. Constable states, “God designed these blessings and curses to persuade His people to obey His covenant with them. Stronger proof of the blessing of obedience and the blasting of disobedience is hardly imaginable. God's will was, and is, very clear and simple: obey His Word.”[10]And Wiersbe adds: "There's a sobering message here for the church in today's world. Like Israel of old, we are God's chosen people and a holy nation (1 Peter 2:9–10) and have been greatly blessed in Jesus Christ. We are here to “advertise” the virtues of the Lord and declare the good news of the Gospel. If we fail to glorify God and obey His Word, He will chasten us just as He chastened Israel (Heb. 12:1–14). “For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17) If God chastens His own people for their sins, what will He do to those who don't belong to the family and have resisted His will? After that, Josh, Tyler and Michael address questions like "What if I can't find time to pray or study Scripture?", "What do I do if prayer or Bible study feel's like a routine/ritual?" and "What do I do if I don't feel like praying/studying Scripture?" and dive into Romans 8:22 to explain the Holy Spirit's role of intercession in the life of the follower of Jesus! Many people like to study God's word, but they don't know HOW to study. Let's discuss some principles that help us rightly divide God's word.

Tyler and I discuss the necessity of studying Gods Word, remaining balanced as a young preacher, and which translation of the Bible to read. Tyler is currently the student body president at Urshan College for the UPCI and is currently graduating with a Bachelors Degree in theology and biblical studies. He is also seeking to obtain his masters degree.

May we continue to dig deeper in the Scriptures daily, examine it critically, and obey its teachings faithfully.

Study of God's Word will help us to grow in faith and in Christ-likeness.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. We can strengthen our faith by feeding on God's Word often. Studying God's Word should be a priority in our lives. We must believe Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins and trust God's Word.

This is the second in a series of sermons pertaining to the study of God's Word. The text is taken from Psalm 8. We are to glorify God and to study Him. We can taste and see that the Lord is good as we study His Word.

When disaster comes, it's the Word of God in your soul that will deliver you and give you the ability to relax. So quit leaning on others. Lean on God and His Word. Understand that Jesus Christ controls history. “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Matt 24:4). To interpret contemporary history you must be able to apply the Word of God to the situation. You must understand the contemporary history and evaluate it as it unfolds. You should learn from history about the next prophetic event, the Rapture. “Be not troubled for these things must come to pass” (Matt 24:4-8). Jesus Christ controls history directly by means of His divine power and indirectly through certain safeguards which don't overlap called dispensations. Each period inhibitory stands alone in history. Studying God's Word on a consistent basis under a qualified pastor and observing history as it unfolds will give you tremendous stability in life. “Take Heed” - there is no disaster in this world that can remove you from life unless it's God's predetermined time for you to go. Studying God's Word can seem intimidating to some and not challenging to others. In this message, I want to share techniques and resources relevant to people at different stages in their spiritual journey. We'll look at how God's Word is a powerful gift to our spiritual development. Then, I will present how people new to faith, growing in faith or mature in faith can study God's Word differently in order to meet their growing needs. We'll talk about the importance of reading, studying and reflecting upon God's Word. I will also talk about specific resources that people at different stages of spiritual maturity should have in order to grow.
