I went from producer back to composer, eventually getting both my first sync deal with a BMG library AND a master's degree in music composition. Scary twist? Not really. Nick D'Virgilio's drumming has been been heard with many bands, including Spock's Beard, Big Big Train, Tears For Fears, and most recently on the current Asian leg of Mr. Big's The Big Finish Tour. Nick is also the drum and percussion product specialist at Sweetwater Sound, so he is known around the world as a "drum guy." He is also a fantastic singer and multi-instrumentalist as evidenced in his solo releases under his own name. Jason Koons has been with Sweetwater since mid 2000 when he accepted an internship in the Sales Department with ambitions of working his way into the recording studios( background and schooling). He was 20 years old and didn't really know who he was was yet, but quickly fell in love with all things Sales & Business Development. He spent 22 years truly sprinting, learning all he could about the craft and being an intentional student of sales, and that led to being the top producer for the company 17 of his 22 years as a Sales Engineer. What's more, those weren't just 17 years straight but each and every month of that as the top producer…203 consecutive months. He held the honor of having talked to more customers of Sweetwater's over his tenure than any other Sales Engineer and in his final month in that role, made the decision to find fulfillment in leadership at Sweetwater Sound.   In January of '22 he accepted the role of Director of Sales Growth & Development where he could focus on bringing the already successful top-performers at Sweetwater to their next levels, as well as contribute to overall sales initiatives and company motions while growth continued. In 1979, musician Chuck Surack started a business in Fort Wayne called Sweetwater Sound by creating a mobile recording studio in a Volkswagen Bus. Fast-forward a bit more than four decades, and Sweetwater has evolved into one of the nation's most prominent e-commerce sites for musical instruments and audio gear, with $1.6 billion in sales for 2022. Surack and his wife, Lisa, had total ownership of the company until 2021 when they sold a big stake to a private equity firm. The Suracks have used that money to help further their already extensive philanthropic giving. Chuck also has more time to focus on Surack Enterprises, a collection of companies unrelated to Sweetwater, including several that stem from his interest in aviation. And that's the reason why Chuck has been in the news in Indianapolis in recent weeks. The Indianapolis Airport Authority wants to decommission the Indianapolis Downtown Heliport, a move that's supported by the city of Indianapolis due to the site's attractiveness for redevelopment. Chuck is helping lead the charge to persuade the Federal Aviation Administration to deny permission to decommission the heliport. Chuck has a helicopter charter company that uses the heliport, but he also joins aviation experts and the Indiana Department of Transportation in arguing that the heliport is uniquely positioned to advantage of new developments in urban aviation. That includes electric aircraft that can take off and land vertically. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, Surack sheds more light on his decision to sell a controlling stake in Sweetwater and step away from day-to-day operations. According to Diversity Wins, the third in a series of reports from famed management consulting firm, McKinsey and Company, the business case for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) is stronger than ever. In their research, McKinsey followed the trajectories of 1,000 companies in 15 countries using a very sophisticated methodology called “social listening” to determine what actually drives success. They've followed these companies since 2014, so this is not simply a snapshot; instead it's a true look, with the perspective of time, on what's happening. The reality is that many, if not most companies, made little progress during a 5-year period. Some even regressed. However, the diversity winners are adopting systematic, business-led approaches to inclusion and diversity (I&D). McKinsey's latest analysis reaffirms the strong business case for both gender diversity and ethnic and cultural diversity in corporate leadership—and shows that this business case continues to strengthen. The most diverse companies are now more likely than ever to outperform less diverse peers on profitability. Moreover, Mckinsey found that the greater the representation, the higher the likelihood of outperformance. In the case of ethnic and cultural diversity, their business-case findings are equally compelling. While these data points are persuasive, getting there is not easy and it doesn't happen overnight. NEWS Nielsen's mid-year recorded music report has some interesting data pointsKorg and Roland get big fines in the UK GUEST Sweetwater Sound's founder and CEO Chuck Surack Chuck Surack supplemented his playing career as a sax and keyboard player with a makeshift recording studio in the back of a his Volkswagen bus. That mobile studio was the departure point for what was to become the largest online music retailer in the world - Sweetwater Sound. The company now ships over 3,300 guitars, 830 keyboards, 460 drum kits, and 5,300 microphones every week from its facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  As successful as Sweetwater is, what you probably don’t know is that Chuck also owns a dozen other business in the area, including a luxury car dealership SweetCars, private charter business companies Sweet Aviation and Sweet Helicopters, and optical retailer Longe Optical, in many cases rescuing the business from bankruptcy to save local jobs. During the interview we talked about the surprising history of Sweetwater, the musical instrument business before and after the coronavirus, how the company finds high quality employees, the big difference between buying from Sweetwater or Amazon, and much more. This week, we talk to the world's foremost experts in guitar effects pedals. After spending decades in music production, live tech, and pedal development, these four guys decided to help break the world's record for the largest guitar effects pedalboard ever created. Some may ask, why? These guys asked why not? In coordination with Sweetwater Sound, the record-setting team included Josh Scott (JHS Pedals), Robert Keeley (Keeley Electronics), Brian Wampler (Wampler Pedals), and Ryan Dyck (Temple Audio), with guitar player and YouTube celeb Rob Scallon spearheading the effort alongside Sweetwater. On July 9th, at Sweetwater's Clyde Theatre in Fort Wayne, Indiana strung together 319 pedals on 34 dedicated pedalboards, featuring 34 different pedal manufacturers. What could possibly go wrong!?

Chuck Surack is a legend in music circles, having created one of the largest MI retailers in the world with Sweetwater Sound. It is interesting to understand how he got there - from a mobile recording studio-in-a-bus, through his initial (and sometimes painful) experiences as a sound designer, then into building a massive business getting us the gear we want. Chuck is much more than a successful retail businessman. He continues to be an active musician and complete gear nut. And he is actively involved in helping young people continue to make music part of their lives through his work with non-profit organizations. Chuck has also been one of the great supporters of user groups and online communities. I saw this first-hand when he helped make the K2000 mailing list and online users group one of the most vital places on the web. It's been my great pleasure to interact with Chuck over the years, and this interview should help you understand why I hold him in such high regard. Enjoy!

Yay! We made it! It's show #10 and we're feeling stronger than ever. We review some of what has gone into our first ten shows and how we're just not going to stop! We're already planning what we're going to do to make our 100th show special. Today's show is a tasty grab bag of tidbits that were planned for earlier shows but never made it for one reason or another. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN DAVIDSON! John and his lovely wife just welcomed a new addition to the family with a healthy baby boy! He was born at 12:11 AM on Saturday March 11, 2006. He's 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and 20 1/2" long. Al points out that he believes John brought in a surround sound crew to record the birth and that he managed to get a small sample from the scratch track already in 5.1. Al plays the clip and everyone is amazed by the "you are there" realism! A Minor Correction: Just a minor correction from last week's trivia question. We spoke with Charles Dye, and while the Ricky Martin song, Livin' La Vida Loca was recorded and mixed entirely inside the box with Pro Tools, it wasn't mastered that way. It was mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York, New York. British songwriter Ian Dury, the Doobie Brothers' Michael McDonald, and music producer Gary Katz all add their fascinating anecdotes to this highly involving rockumentary. Many of the mixes are dissected and studio sessions are detailed. Find the DVD for less than ten bucks! Eric JohnsonTotal Guitar Al recommends a DVD by Eric Johnson titled Total Guitar. This is an opportunity to study with one of the electric guitar's true virtuosos. This lesson encompasses all styles and includes advanced picking for speed and accuracy, left and right hand muting, various blues bends, country "pedal steel" bends, using different positions for sound and more! There's all kinds of free video music tutorials and gear reviews that are a lot of fun to watch. Mike encourages trying to play as many parts live in your project as possible. Break out of the sequencer and samples and discover something new! Al details solving a sampled bass challenge by running it through Amplitube (a digital guitar amp simulator). How do you pronounce the word spelled P - I - E - Z - O? The Online American Heritage Dictionary sets us all straight. Here's the audio pronunciation from their site. Click here to hear it! "The Womanizer"Al mentions a recent gear find that looks very promising. It's dual-tube guitar pre-amps from a relatively new company founded by some ex-Line6 (Pod XT) folks. Here's a link to their site: http://DamageControlUSA.com Viewer Mail: "Big Al, I picked up the BBE acoustic pre-amp you recommended on ebay for $72. Just got it yesterday, tried it out, and you were right. It works great. Nice sweetening effect, even on my Neve-equipped Taylor. Begs a question, however. What's your opinion on piggy-backing pre's?" I'm not a big fan of stacking up pre's. That said, it can work with careful monitoring. The problems that often crop up are distortion and phase-like anomalies. If you're using a unit with an effects loop that you can use it to insert the BBE. If you're using a mixing console, you could also insert the BBE in the channel there. If the only choice is to stack the pre's, I think I'd go through the BBE last. It's usually not a good effect to equalize the BBE process. It lives best at the end of the chain.
