1 /200 doesn't usually get former US State Department officers as guests, but Dr. Annelle Sheline is no ordinary former State Department officer. Having famously quit her job in protest at the Biden administration's unequivocal backing for Israel's war on Gaza, she recently sat down with Branko Marcetic to talk about how a US foreign policy that puts military power over human rights hurts everyone - including the United States itself.https://quincyinst.org/research/under-primacy-weapons-sales-will-always-supersede-human-rights/This episode's co-hostsBrankoTimestamps0:00 Opening 1:30 Arms Sales in US Foreign Policy6:59 Competition with China13:16 U.S Cost of Supporting Israel17:17 Bidens Damage to Human Rights24:59 Shared Interests of Hegemony30:01 Biden Decision Making for Gaza38:48 Delusion and Denial48:56 ClosingsIntro/Outro by The Prophet MotiveSupport us here: https://www.patreon.com/1of200

Since Donald Trump took office and Elon Musk made himself the face of Doge, Tesla stock has dropped 48%. In a show of loyalty, Trump cheapened the front of the White House by turning it into something of a Tesla showroom yesterday. Musk had a Cybertruck and a couple sedans brought over. Then, Musk and Trump posed for pictures as the owner of Tesla sold the non-driving president an electric car. The move brought Tesla stock up 4%. Tesla has also been the target of protestors who have burned charging stations and vandalized vehicles. To them, Trump says he is directing those acts to be considered “domestic terrorism.” Our resident presidential historian, John Rothmann, will have a lot to say about using the Whitehouse as a backdrop to sell cars. Our favorite Britisher Anthony Davis stops by to talk politics. He is the host of “5 Minute News” on YouTube and brings his deep knowledge of world politics to the conversation. Potential Social Security changes are concerning many people. We'll talk about it with Branko Marcetic. He is a journalist, investigative reporter and author. *Programming Note: Belinda Waymouth is off today

The one good thing about defeat is you can learn some lessons. But what if the lessons you learn are the wrong ones. In the wake of Donald Trump winning the presidential election, pundits and Democratic strategists have already been drawing lessons.Unfortunately, as Branko Marcetic documents in a recent piece in Jacobin, many of these lessons are in fact myths, designed to exculpate those responsible for the electoral disaster while scapegoating groups that have much less power. On this episode of The Time of Monsters, I was very happy to talk to Branko about both election myths and the mythmakers who spin them.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

We are joined by Jacobin writer and author of the definitive Biden takedown "Yesterday's Man" Branko Marcetic (@BMarchetich) to talk about Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the race, and the rise of his VP Kamala Harris as the likely Democratic Party candidate. Read Branko's work on Biden dropping out and Kamala Harris: https://jacobin.com/2024/07/kamala-harris-2024-biden-trump https://jacobin.com/2024/07/biden-2024-dropout-gaza-legacy
Should he stay or should he go? President Joe Biden's decision to remain in the presidential race has consequences for hundreds of millions of people — and it has at least one Democratic National Committee member and convention delegate inquiring whether the party can force him off the ticket. But if Biden's out, corporate lobbyists who've embedded themselves into the party could help select the new nominee. Today on Lever Time, Arjun Singh speaks withThe American Prospect's Executive Editor David Dayen, Jacobin staff writer Branko Marcetic, and Sludge co-founder David Moore to unpack the divide fracturing the Democratic Party and look at how corporate power is woven into the fabric of the party's convention, to be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22. Biden's road to the 2024 presidential nomination has been anything but democratic. Team Biden crushed all attempts to have him prove his mettle against primary challengers. After his disastrous debate performance against Trump triggered a revolt within his own party, Biden didn't hold a town hall to meet with the public — he hopped on the phone with his top donors. Now, those same donors could portend Biden's downfall, with wealthy backers like George Clooney urging the president to step down, and others yanking their donations. Will the new alliance between a majority of Democratic voters and the party's elite insiders all be on the same page regarding Biden's potential replacement?

Branko Marcetic joined Antiwar Radio this week to talk about two articles he wrote recently. The first concerns the ousting of former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan in a no-confidence vote. U.S. officials and their friends in the media had said, emphatically, that the American government had no role in his removal. But a recently published cable appears to contradict that claim. Scott and Marcetic discuss. They then turn to the second article which examines the U.S. government's apparent plan to extend the war in Ukraine, despite the failures of the counteroffensive. Discussed on the show: “Imran Khan's Ouster Is a Story of US Power and Propaganda” (Jacobin) “U.S.-Israel Plot Against Pakistan: A Desperate Imran Khan's Big, Bad Conspiracy Theory” (Haaretz) “Are US officials signaling a new ‘forever war' in Ukraine?” (Responsible Statecraft) Branko Marcetic is a writer for Jacobin Magazine, a fellow at In These Times, and host of the 1/200 podcast. For a month now, the so-called Discord leaks have shown us a whole new dimension of the war in Ukraine — how Washington really feels about the much-anticipated Ukraine counter-offensive, how Zelensky has been trapped between hardliners and his Western patrons, and how not all of our partners and allies are on board equally in the US policy in Ukraine. This week we talk to Jacobin reporter and analyst Branko Marcetic on what he is reading between the lines, as well as the difficulty in covering the war with a persistent lack of clarity regarding battlefield numbers and data. He also discusses his recent article on the futility of economic sanctions on American "adversaries" — how they more often than not, don't work, and end up being a form of "collective punishment."In the first segment, Kelley and Dan talk about those surprise high-level U.S. talks with China, Zelenksy's outburst against the Washington Post, Trump's Town Hall, and Washington accusing South Africa of sending weapons to Russia.More from Marcetic:Mainstream Media Doesn't Care That the CIA May Have Helped Cause 9/11, Jacobin, 5/13US Sanctions Are Brutal and Inhumane. The COVID-19 lab leak theory went from being dismissed as mere misinformation, to now a credible matter of debate amongst media, scientific, and intelligence organizations. What's changed, and what does this teach us about science journalism and science communication? Is it time to let go of our obsession over “misinformation”? First, Jacobin staff writer Branko Marcetic lays out the political problems with the idea of misinformation. Later, Nicole M. Krause, a PhD candidate focussing on science communication, looks at conceptual problems in the research itself. What's “True,” and who gets to decide? And after this week's attempted drone strike on the Kremlin, these leaks of US aggression become even more important. “One of the topline revelations,” he tells us. “Was that despite the fact that Joe Biden said early in the war we're not going to send US troops, it turns out that there are boots on the ground.” What they're doing there, we don't know yet. What it means for the war, Branko explains. Another major revelation, he explains, is that “last year there was a run-in between a Russian and British plane. It turns out, we know from these documents, that a Russian plane fired at a British spy plane because the pilot misunderstood the instructions he was getting from the ground.” The only reason the plane wasn't shot down, potentially leading to World War III: “The plane malfunctioned. And humanity escaped by the skin of its teeth.” But our heads of military in both the Pentagon and the media can't let Americans know how dangerous this increasingly escalating war is for fear of losing support for the billions of cash we spend on it. And that's where Branko gives the third revelation from the Pentagon leaks: “US officials lied about Ukraine winning the war. Privately, they believe Ukraine can make modest land gains at best. But if Americans believe that Ukraine is winning, they're more likely to support sending further military aide.” The Pentagon leaks are being censored to keep a deadly proxy war alive, to keep support for sucking Ukraine dry until we fight to the last Ukrainian. Branko Marcetic is uncovering it. Watch the full interview to hear the scary extent of the Pentagon leaks, the depressing reelection campaign of “yesterday's man” Joe Biden, and a heated debate: Is Tucker Carlson actually anti-war? "I Was A Teenage Conspiracy Theorist," The Atlantic magazine playfully titled a 2020 essay. "Choose your reality: Trust wanes, conspiracy theories rise," reported The Associated Press in 2022. "Do You Know Someone Who Believes in Conspiracy Theories? We Want to Hear About It," wrote The New York Times last year. Fears of "conspiracy theories" are a common trope in the U.S. media, a worry that's grown more acute with the rise of QAnon, anti-vaxx sentiment, anti-semitism and a host of other dangerous theories that unduly rot brains throughout the country. To a great extent, this understandable: Many ideas that meet the definition of "conspiracy theories" are, indeed, baseless and dangerous and can direct people's political energy and resources into wasteful, racist, and downright stupid rabbit holes. But that fact shouldn't delegitimize or foreclose all skepticism of those in power, but too often the term "conspiracy theory" is used to do just that. Repeatedly, media lump together so-called conspiracy theories, regardless of their accuracy, rationale, and ideology: at once, UFO chasers, QAnon, and the Black Panther Party being subject to FBI disruption are somehow placed in the same category of paranoid kooks. At the same time, unproven, and often debunked ideas advanced by media that also meet the definition of "conspiracy theories" — such as Saddam Hussein being behind 9/11 or so-called Havana syndrome — are treated as unassailable, meriting ongoing investigation, limitless resources, and of course, utmost solemnity. On this episode, we detail the double standards applied to conspiracy theories inside and outside of the realm of U.S. corporate media. We'll examine the development of the concept of conspiracy theories and the media's selective invocations of the term to discredit real grievances directed at American power and the U.S. government, and moreover, how power-friendly conspiracies — namely those focused on Enemy States like the Havana Syndrome narrative — are permitted to fester and grow without pushback because their red yarn dot connecting implicates the right lists of Acceptable Bad Guys. Our guest is Jacobin writer Branko Marcetic.
We have some juicy topics today! The military member caught by the FBI for trying to be a hitman, super PACS of Trump and DeSantis go head to head, but look out for the chocolate fingers! The good news is we have one less thing to worry about: so-called Havana Syndrome turns out not to be caused by a mysterious super-weapon to harm American diplomats and military personnel, despite numerous press reports warning of a hypothetical ray gun created by a foreign foe (Cuba? Russia? China?). Instead, an assessment by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) concluded that the symptoms of Havana Syndrome, reported by hundreds of government officials working all over the world) likely had “medical, environmental, and social factors that plausibly can explain.” In less polite terms, this was an example of a mass psychogenic illness, a product of hysteria and over-active imaginations. Writing in Jacobin, Branko Marcetic links the Havana Syndrome frenzy to other examples of national security paranoia such as the false reports of Russians paying for Taliban bounty hunters and the recent meltdown over Chinese surveillance balloons. I talked with Branko about both the Havana Syndrome, and the reasons – political and psychological–that the military-industrial complex is going into over drive conjuring up imaginary or overhyped threats.Subscribe to The Nation to support all of our podcasts: thenation.com/podcastsubscribe. Scott talks with Branko Marcetic about some cables he recently dug up that show U.S. officials and western governments voicing concern about Russia's reaction to NATO expansion going back to the 1990s. Marcetic's work adds to the evidence that shatters the argument that anyone connecting NATO expansion to the February invasion is either an amplifier or victim of a Russian disinformation operation. Scott and Marcetic go over what he found and zoom out to examine the broader context. Discussed on the show: “Diplomatic Cables Show Russia Saw NATO Expansion as a Red Line” (ACURA) “Ignoring Gorbachev's Warnings” (Current Affairs) “‘Now or Never': The Immediate Origins of Putin's Preventative War on Ukraine” (Journal of Military and Strategic Studies) Retired General Wesely Clark saying the US cannot let nuclear weapons deter its efforts Branko Marcetic is a writer for Jacobin Magazine, a fellow at In These Times, and host of the 1/200 podcast. Was it, in fact, a legitimate coup attempt? And what role did social media play in the storming of Brazil's capital? Then we pivot to a philosophical conversation about the role Brazil's speech laws, which allow for many more constraints on speech than our own first amendment does, are a better match for a country that has recently experienced an actual military coup. Is the commitment to free speech absolutism so common in America a product of political naivety in a country that's never really experienced the full potential consequences of home grown fascism? Does the first amendment provide protections that sincerely protect minority views, or does it just create the perception that speech is free at the same time that tech platforms, news papers owned by billionaires, and corporate campaign spending neuter dissident voices? Are Glenn Greenwald's criticisms of limitations on speech occurring in Brazil overly reliant on a US lens/speech framework? Or is there a there there? Scott is joined by Branko Marcetic of Jacobin to discuss the recent revelations that the Department of Homeland Security has been guiding tech platforms on what they should censor. They observe some specific cases where platforms like Facebook and Google changed rules and suppressed stories to help prop up the U.S. government's narratives, even when they proved false. Scott and Marcetic also talk about the potential for cross-idealogical coalitions to fight back against these blatant and dangerous government interventions in the information space. “I want you all to know that among progressives, it has become clear that you cannot claim to hold progressive values yet back Israel's apartheid government.” Those words, spoken by Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., at a Palestine Advocacy Day event, created a firestorm within the Democratic Party last month. When journalist Katie Halper decided to discuss the comments in one of her regular editorials for Hill TV's “Rising,” she had no idea that she was about to ignite a firestorm of her own. Ryan Grim and Jacobin writer Branko Marcetic join Halper to discuss.https://join.theintercept.com/donate/now Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
