The Power Glove: From NASA to Nintendo

What may seem like a novelty video game accessory from the 1980s actually has a much deeper backstory. The Nintendo Power Glove, a game controller you wore on your arm, came out in 1989, but its roots go back to the 1970s. Before it was the "baddest" accessory around, the Power Glove started out as the Data Glove, a high-end instrument used by scientists, MIT, and even NASA. What began as a $10,000 instrument for a new world called "Virtual Reality" eventually entered the consumer market. Did the data glove have more novel applications? Could this unique device even become a toy...? But to make it a toy, a redesign and a MUCH lower price point were both critical, and that meant a lot of compromises in both materials and functionality. Even though the Power Glove was launched with a huge boom, did the at-home gaming experience live up to the hype...?  War Games movie review: Patreon.com/80s

Inside Scoop Live!
"Second Last Chance" by Darren Watling

'Darren has reached deeply into the very bottom of toilet humour.' 'iiieeeooo.' Humankind has one more chance, a second-last chance, to survive. We are in a lot of trouble if these zany characters are our last hope. Prison Planet accommodates the American crew, safely landing with all dubious passengers intact. An evil warden assumes the role of dictator for the planet's lifers. Crew 7 must escape the clutches of the warden and his hench . . . men/women/other. But who are the real criminals? The House of FILTH. Some still dealing with their own afflictions, the ex-psychiatric patients stumble upon an oasis on a new planet. The 'most powerful organisation in the universe' does not take kindly to strangers. In another world, on the isolated island of Retro-Tech, who or what is the unknown entity that has seized control? Climb aboard the realm-hopping transport with Arros Sole to get to the bottom of it. Born Darren Edward Watling, Subiaco, Western Australia, 1966. Darren excelled in English, maintaining ‘A's, throughout his schooling and wrote a play, ‘Laughing Gas', for his school at the age of 10. Credited with a few small, published articles, Darren found inspiration and reward, arriving at his latest piece, ‘2nd Last Chance'. He completed an apprenticeship, as a fitter, at Princess Margaret Hospital, while continuing his passion for short story writing. Travelling Australia for three years on a private bus gave Darren a beginning to the experiences and continued, humorous outlook he has on life. Darren approached Jill Stubbs Mills and asked for her blessing to take her short story, ‘Deception', and rewrite it into a novel. (The feedback from Fremantle Press about her story was exceptional). Jill agreed to her son's request. Sadly, Jill now suffers with dementia, but, laughably, keeps her sense of humour. Various forms of employment, including a movie extra, a welder on a crocodile farm, a drummer for a touring band and currently a roof plumber, gave Darren considerable, ‘fuel', for a comedic novel. Darren has had several passions over the past 50 odd years while walking this Earth. Drums, Karate, Tennis and continuing today- comedic writing. You can learn more about Darren E. Watling and his books on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/darren.watling.37/ and Instagram at  https://www.instagram.com/darren.e.watling/ TOPICS OF CONVERSATION Humor and Satire: Using comedy to critique society and shape characters. Character Inspirations: Creating exaggerated characters with real-world influences. Worldbuilding: Crafting absurd settings like Prison Planet and House of Filth. Writing Process: From adapting a short story to surprising plot twists. Audience and Reception: Targeting older readers and reactions to dark humor. What's next for Darren Watling?

If you grew up in the 80s, you grew up in the era of physical media. Our videotape collections allowed us to watch our favorite movies and TV shows over and over, allowing us to develop a deep appreciation for the things we loved. But how did we get here, and how did it all end up changing so drastically? Today we not only revisit the origins of the VCR itself but look at the VHS/Betamax format wars of the 80s and the worthy third competitor: Laserdisc. We also look at the growth of home video, the time when the VCR was under attack by Hollywood, and the progression of the VCR to DVD, Blu-Ray, and then streaming. This episode is also a look at how physical media has become a bit of an endangered species, but why it still has an important place in our modern world. We'll have tons of content for you guys throughout the next couple of weeks with our coverage, but starting off, Darian had a chance to do an interview with talent behind the camera for a fascinating docuseries, 'An Update on our Family.' Director/Executive Producer Rachel Mason & Executive Producer Rachael Knudsen sat down for a virtual interview with Darian highlighting the documentary surrounding Myka Stauffer and the Stauffer family, one of the pioneers of the "family vlogging YouTube community," who were on top of the world until one day they weren't. After adopting a young boy from China, their seemingly perfect family quickly became entrenched in a cascade of controversy. In this chat, Darian talks to Rachel & Rachael about the article that spawned the series, the role that content has on people's lives, the family vlogging space and much, much more. Please enjoy this chat with Rachel Mason & Rachael Knudsen! #interview #familyvloggers #anupdateonourfamily #tribeca #filmfestival Rachel Mason is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker with a background in visual art and music. She received an Emmy Nomination for her Netflix Original Documentary CIRCUS OF BOOKS, Executive Produced by Ryan Murphy. The film explores her biographical story, learning the truth about her parents' adult bookstore at the center of the gay community. Mason was featured as one of Indiewire's “25 LGBTQ Filmmakers on the Rise.” Mason is currently directing the official documentary about Halyna Hutchins, with Story Syndicate. She is also directing a series about Billy Newton (aka Billy London) a gay adult film star whose unsolved murder haunted the Los Angeles gay community for 32 years. Rachael Knudsen is an award-winning producer and director whose work has been featured on Hulu, Netflix, MTV, VICE, A&E, Lifetime, Food Network, TLC, and Animal Planet. Over the past 15 years, she has dedicated her career to producing compelling non-fiction projects that explore culture shifts, sexual health, and the quest for belonging. In 2021, Rachael received a Front Page Award for her investigative documentary "Bad Goods," which exposed the global illicit trade of pangolins. Are you stuck in the cycle of scaling your creative work, but feel like you're compromising on quality? Fear not, we've all been there. This episode is a vibrant exploration of the paradox of wanting to grow without losing the essence of our work. We discuss the allure of 'plasticifying' our endeavors – making them more appealing to the masses – and how we can safeguard our creative integrity. Ever felt trapped in the realm of complexity? It's an alluring place, but sometimes, simplicity delivers elegance and authenticity. We discuss how overcomplicating our lives with material possessions can distract us from what truly matters. Using the example of a movie remake simplified for a mass audience, we delve into the potential drawbacks of plasticity in our creative processes. We'll also address the challenge of balancing artistic vision with commercial goals, a common quandary for creators. We round up the conversation with a dive into live streaming and its value, especially when compared to traditional newsletters. The spontaneity and real-time connection that come with live streaming can catalyze a unique bond with the audience. Lastly, we discuss the joy of handcrafting unique experiences, embracing minimalism, and reducing complexities. Join us for this enlightening conversation and learn how simplifying your life can sometimes lead to more success. - Ai Alex referenced a movie called "THE FOLLOWING" during our conversation, and he meant to say "THE VANISHING" - link below. Show Notes:The Graduate: https://www.criterion.com/films/28578-the-graduateTravels with Charley in Search of America by John Steinbeck: https://www.theatlantic.com/past/docs/unbound/classrev/charley.htmThe Vanishing (1993): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vanishing_(1993_film)The Vanishing (1988): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vanishing_(1988_film) Coca-Cola Buys Topo Chico: https://bit.ly/45UR0B6Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead: https://youtu.be/n5h0qHwNrHk?si=0vXqkBPG_VRKxQ2UVan Neistat GoPro Video: https://youtu.be/tPv83XxkrWo?si=VddLvDGgzCsBtw8iWillem Verbeek Canada Road Trip Video: https://youtu.be/I6ESg2Fdtn4?si=oULCDAZ3YPf3HHQ-Seinfeld Episode with John Cheever's Letters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyT3jlANQ_Q If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review.
