P&C drink and review Troeg's Hop Horizon IPA, then discuss the need for strong men. One side of the culture war wants to tell boys they're toxic, potential rapists, and the best they can do is sit quietly and not get in the girls' way, because the future is female. And if you won't sit quietly, we'll give you drugs to make sure you do. On the other side of the culture war, Sen. Josh Hawley recently wrote a book to encourage boys to grow in the manly virtues. From a Roman perspective, these are the classical virtues. 1. Virtus (Manliness) encompasses bravery, courage, and strength. A Roman man was expected to display valor on the battlefield and face adversity with resilience. 2. Pietas (Piety) referred to a sense of duty, devotion, and loyalty. A Roman man was expected to fulfill his obligations to the gods, his family, and the state. 3. Fides (Good Faith) was the virtue of trustworthiness, reliability, and honesty. A Roman man was expected to keep his promises, be true to his word, and honor his commitments. 4. Gravitas (Dignity) denoted a sense of seriousness, self-control, and responsibility. A Roman man was expected to conduct himself with dignity, maintain composure in challenging situations, and exercise self-discipline. 5. Industria (Industriousness) represented diligence, hard work, and perseverance. A Roman man was expected to be productive, industrious, and committed to achieving his goals. 6. Clementia (Mercy) referred to the virtue of mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. A Roman man was encouraged to show leniency and kindness, particularly in positions of power and authority. 7. Honestas (Respectability) encompassed moral integrity, honor, and a respectable reputation. A Roman man was expected to lead a virtuous life, maintain his family's honor, and contribute positively to society. The cardinal virtues, according to Roman Catholicism are prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. What's wrong with these things? The boys also review a horrible article by Silva Neves from Psychology Today.

The boys drink and review Troeg's Nugget Nectar, then discuss how men are stealing all the top places in women's rankings. While thinking about transgender ideology, the boys look at ... * Contradictions in transgender ideology * What "transgender" means * Can people be "trapped in the wrong body"? * Examples of how men are stealing women's thunder * Where have all the feminists gone? The gender fluidity / trans perspective is internally inconsistent, illogical, unscientific, and mind-bogglingly stupid. Pigweed and Crowhill try their best to inject some sense and logic into the debate.

Welcome to Fresh Fest 2019, which happens this Saturday, August 10th at Nova Place in Pittsburgh. Mike Potter, Fresh Fest cofounder, joins Ed and Day to talk all things Fresh Fest, which he describes as, “a festival which we just happen to bring beer to.” What makes Fresh Fest unique and history-making is its collection of stories and its offerings: 70+ beers that have been specifically brewed for Fresh Fest and never tasted before. Even better is what the festival represents: a brand new approach to beer by making it accessible to a new audience. This latest interview shines a light on how the festival began, where it might grow, and what makes it so special. What is new for 2019 is the festival’s expanded schedule, which now includes a Friday night beer exchange and symposium (hosted by Ale Sharpton) at Ace Hotel and a Sunday brunch with the brewers at Savoy Restaurant in the Strip. Some exciting beers that will be featured are: a collaboration beer from Warcloud Brewing and Eleventh Hour, a triple threat brew from the team of Troeg’s Brewing, Apis Mead and Winery, and the Drinking Partners, and more than forty other collaborations, from fruity sours (Syla Pgh and Aurochs Brewing) to a juicy New England IPA (Nappy Roots and Dancing Gnome) to a blueberry pancake inspired stout (Hardo and Union Brothers Brewing). With beers in hands, they welcome Sam Leonard from Pittsburgh Local News and Shannon Harris, a Texas-based beer blogger and award-winning home brewer. The early conversation focuses on Sam’s take on the happenings in and around Pittsburgh and the role of media and free speech. Shannon – known as The Brew Brotha – is highlighted midway through as he offers his thoughts on the beer scene in Texas and Black beer culture across the country. He explains in the latter minutes how he collaborates with breweries across the country, including Dancing Gnome, where he created an “aggressively hopped” styling for Fresh Fest 2018. Listen until the end as the group loosens up and jumps between the beers that Mr. Harris has brought with him and hilarious stories, an unsurprising conclusion for loyal listeners. Hear Sam on the Epicast network with his podcast Pittsburgh Local News, and find Shannon Harris at www.thebrewbrotha.com.

What’s better than getting beer shipped to you from Troeg’s while sipping on beer from Mindful? Not much, the Drinking Partners decide in their latest podcast release. Happy and well-lubricated, Ed and Day welcome noted Pittsburgh blogger, and, according to Day, the daredevil of journalism, Virginia Montanez. Ms. Montanez shares a unique perspective as she relates her history of being “outed” as a once-anonymous political commentator, which caused her to lose her job with a non-profit, which leads into a conversation about the consequences of free speech. Several, Drinking Partners-esque detours offer laughs as the trio muses about deer as vermin, privacy concerns, and the political happenings in and around Pittsburgh, all within a few breaths. After years of blogging as Pittsburgh’s preeminent and wittiest voice, Ms. Montanez now shares her thoughts on Twitter. To follow her and her latest thoughts, find her @janepitt.

Welcome to the York Story Slam podcast, where we feature select stories from our monthly open mic storytelling events in York, Pennsylvania.  On October 18, 2016, 10 storytellers shared their stories with our audience at Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York. Our theme for the evening was Unmasked. We heard stories about both literal and figurative masks people wear. Michelle Macera won with the story about how she exacted revenge on her on-again, off-again high school boyfriend.  Next up is Matt McDunnell. Matt, a regular at York Story Slam, recalled the time he saw a little girl - and an older one - get scarred for life. Our final story on this month’s podcast comes from Billy Krouse, who shared a story about a night on the job as a limo driver. Our next event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th, and it’s our Grand Slam. All the winners from this year’s open mic story slam events will return to compete for the title of Best Storyteller in York. We’re excited to host this culminating event in the beautiful Capitol Theatre. Our podcast is produced with support from The Beer Ace.  This episode comes to you with support from this month’s featured brewery partner, Troeg’s Brewing Company.

In this episode, we falsely claim that Troeg’s Brewing was acquired by one of the brewing world’s big guns, but this is not true. Not at all  Here’s the story.  This makes me incredibly happy, even though I wasn’t initially super stoked by the label-art redesigns.  They are beautiful, though. (If you’re ever in/near Hershey, it’s absolutely worth your time to stop at the brewery, eat at the exceptional and amazing “snack bar,” which is an understatement of epic proportions, and take the tour.)  Sometimes I’m a crotchety old traditionalist, though…particularly when it comes to big things that I used to know and love when they were considerably smaller.  So, Troeg’s.  We had Nugget Nectar tonight (7.5 ABV, 93ish IBU).  We did this post Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and Imperial Pils, which is becoming a bit of a tradition for us.  Get buzzed on the Lagunitas, hit record, and bring that buzz to a drunk with a new brew. So, what is the topic today? We talk about absurd Twitter battles (…I know, the word “absurd” is entirely unnecessary and is implied by the following two words…) and misinformed bro-beefs. First, B.o.B. versus Neil deGrasse Tyson regarding the following question: Is the world flat? Really.  It wasn’t a joke.  I mean, it’s a fucking joke…but it wasn’t to B.o.B. (His Twitter profile leads me to believe that he also believes the moon landing was faked.  Perhaps by Stanley Kubrick.  Yikes.) This is a real thing that just happened.  A fairly popular hip hop and pop music artist, that being B.o.B., claims that there is NOT irrefutable evidence that the earth is round; that, in fact, there is much conspiracy-theorist-nut-job-driven data pointing in the direction of human beliefs circa 300 BC.  An actual scientist and also popular culture icon, that being deGrasse Tyson, argued with him.  And the fall out includes several songs.  Here’s B.o.B.’s.  Here’sTyson’s.  I don’t know, maybe we should prepare for the Armageddon. Next, we try to interpret the Wiz Khalifa/Kanye West Twitter battle.  Think about that.  A friggin’ Twitter battle.  Not a physical fight.  Not a drive-by shooting.  Not even a verbal confrontation.  Just two dudes, presumably of average intelligence, arguing with each other over a social media platform.  About…really, it’s entirely unclear; or at least not worth any additional cognitive energy to explain here.  Is this what we’ve become?  When hip-hop hatred needs to be modified and telegraphed to fit the character constraints of an application?  I guess. And through this entire thing, Jen ends up becoming a fan of B.o.B.’s flow and the producers with whom he works. Here we go…presenting to you, “#HipHopisDead.” Oh, the music!  At the beginning, “Blues Music” by G Love and Special Sauce.  At the end, “Hip Hop is Dead,” by Nas.  And just below, the iconic image of the iconic Notorious B.I.G.       B-I-G…P-O…P…P-A
