With special guest Longinus, the boys drink and review Naked Elf by Troegs (a version of their seasonal Mad Elf), then discuss the history of all the funny traditions that make up our modern Christmas. Was Jesus really born in a manger on the 25th of December? And speaking of dates, why do the Orthodox celebrate Christmas on a different day? What did Saturnalia, the winter solstice, and Yule contribute to our Christmas traditions? How did St. Nicholas get associated with Christmas? Where did we get tree decorating, mistletoe, Yule logs, gift-giving men in fur cloaks, strange animals pulling sleighs, and the general festivity of the season? Why are "scary ghost stories" associated with Christmas? And how did Thor's goat get thrown into the mix? Why did Oliver Cromwell and the early Americans have such a problem with Christmas? Is Santa Claus really St. Nick, or is he the pagan Father Frost, or maybe Odin? The boys discuss these and other fun stories about the origin of our modern Christmas celebration.

To kick off Valentine's month, we're doing “Whatever You Like” (or whatever we like, in that case). This is nowhere near our favorite song, but we sure had a good time! Listen in as we develop the germ of a parody idea, talk about too much chicken, go off about fast food restaurants, government cheese, Blockbuster Video WOW what a difference, ballin' brownies on a budget, and more! This week, we had whatever we liked. Lauren has Mad Elf from Troeg's Independent Brewing. John has Cold Brew Coffee Pumpking Nitro from Southern Tier Brewing Company. Cheers! Merry Christmas to all, now you're all gonna die! We are starting a new tradition here at the Beer'd Al Podcast, wherein we revisit "The Night Santa Went Crazy" at Christmastime! Full disclosure, this episode is less about the song and more about general holiday frivolity. We do tackle the song (and even share a clip from our VERY FIRST EPISODE!), but there's also beer, farts, Christmas cookies, and a weirdly deep discussion about knowing your self-worth. We both have Mad Elf from Troegs Brewing. Because IT IS CHRISTMAS! CHEERS! Beer'd Al is a part of the OddPods Media Network. Promo for Keeping Up with the Cardassians.
Returning guest Taylore helps us out with the year 2019 in our Best of the Decade marython. We are talking Ready or Not, Jojo Rabbit, and Midsommar. We enjoy beer from Ship bottom, Glasstown Brewing, and Taylore has the notorious Mad Elf.

WE ARE BACK with a new series and new episode! This holiday season, we're focused on inappropriate holiday movies paired with our favorite Christmas Ales. To start things off, we're drinking Troeg's Mad Elf while watching "Office Christmas Party" and talking far too much about Fortune Feimster, Denzel Washington and Jillian Bell (one of which is not in this movie). Back to back Friday nights and this one was all about the girls. The Shane twins, Cora & Taylor, were front and center for a pre-race conversation about their 5k tomorrow. The event is part of the Girl's on the Run program they are a part of, which is a nationwide non-profit organization to help with physical and mental health development. You can find more about the organization in the link below: https://www.girlsontherun.org/ Weather came up, as always and it is going to be a chilly 26* for their run tomorrow……brrrrrrr! Some PSU Football and a few little life lessons – “Stop, Breath, Think!” The girlies brought it tonight and hope you all enjoy this one. This may have been the first time we recorded a session on a Friday night. May be wrong but it was a fun show and maybe you'll get a nugget or two out of it. We talked about some insecurities and areas we should all be working on and be aware of, compassion, kindness, and perspective. We discussed “the dash,” and it has nothing to do with running, more who we are becoming. We spent some good time on a favorite book and documentary of ours. The book is Cross Country: A 3,700 Mile Run to Explore Unseen America! The YouTube Documentary: Transamericana with Ricky Gates running 3700 miles across America! If you need some perspective, a runner not, maybe something to read and/or watch? Of course, we talked about weather, new baby Shane, Isabella becoming an adult turning 18, and – how the stores are still not listening to us by keeping the Christmas holiday decorations out of site until Thanksgiving. Which leads us too……. Little switch from last week with Mike having the sparking water but Bryan going big with Troegs' Mad Elf – just in time for Halloween!!! Last year, right around this time, I visited Troeg's Independent Brewing in Hershey and met with Co-Founders, John and Chris Trogner and in a wide ranging conversation, talked about their careers, the brewery's history, their beers and their team. Now that we are well into the holiday season, I thought it would be the right time to revisit that meeting and put the spotlight on Mad Elf Ale, their amazing Christmas Ale, and talk about their process for developing recipes. Cheers! -Jefferson

What's that causing havoc in the Prose and Bros studio? It's Troeg's "Mad Elf" everyone's favorite (maybe) high octane holiday brew! John Travolta—Scientology's original darling son—spent years attempting to bring L. Ron Hubbard's not-so-classic science fiction novel Battlefield Earth to the big screen. It was a great passion of his, which, for us viewers, is quite unfortunate. His dogged determination to appease Hubbard—the founder of the Church of Scientology—by bringing his novel to life in the vein of "Star Wars" is what ushered this travesty into the world. Battlefield Earth, and I don't say this lightly, is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Putting aside its shameful treatment of logical sense and sound science, it is just not well made. From the dismal lighting to the awkward angles to the laughable costumes, creature designs, and effects, it seems to be intentionally making a mockery of its source material. But therein lies the issue: The movie is not in on the joke. Sure, there are elements of it where it may seem that it is self-aware—Travolta's insane turn as Terl—but then you discover that the actor himself once labeled it the "Schindler's List" of science fiction. That bloated sense of the project's own importance is what makes its utter failure so ironic. Battlefield Earth, despite all the backing and might of its church, was a flop, earning just over $29 million on a budget of $44 million (Roughly $12 million of that went to Travolta's pocket, which may explain why the CGI is so wonky). It is also one of the worst reviewed films of this century, currently sitting at a paltry 3% on Rotten Tomatoes with 148 reviews. And it wasn't just critics who hated it. The film's initial screenwriter, J.D. Shapiro, penned an open letter in the New York Post apologizing for his role in its development. As with all terrible films, though, this one sure gave us plenty to discuss. So sit back, grab a Mad Elf from Tröegs, and jockey for some all important leverage as I the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla smelt some gold and start the man-animal revolution! This Week’s Segments: Introduction – We break down this epic mess of a movie, even crowning it the inaugural "Bad Movie Champion" of the pod. (00:00) Scientology is Weird, but is It Really That Weird? – I challenge Capt. Cash and Chumpzilla to determine whether these nutty facts about Scientology are True or False. (52:10) Recommendations – We provide our picks for the week, each of which are more entertaining than this movie. (1:07:06) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter or Facebook to check out all the interesting factoids—the Psychlo stilts, Kelly Preston's cringe-inducing cameo, and more—from this week’s episode!

Podcast 36: We Birthed a Podcast : Beery Christmas! Nick and Alex hold it down while Jake is traveling from Nashville to Boston. We decided to find some holiday themed beers and review them while drilling each other with Christmas themed questions. Beer #1: Holiday Donut Cookie - Platform Beer/Brewnuts (7.0% Holiday Ale with milk sugar, vanilla, spice and Snickerdoodle cookies) Smells of cinnamon and nutmeg, very clear pour but tastes more beer-y than anything. Not a lot of carbonation which is to be expected for the style. We went to Hal's for Four Points Brewing tap takeover. We were blown away by the Orange Passion Biotix (5% Sour with Blood Orange and Passionfruit) sour. Check out Four Points Brewing (Link below!) Nick and Sara went to Dancing Gnome this week for Simcoe Jam and we were pleasantly surprised. The guys always take care of us and we love going there. The beer was great and then we all headed to Hal's. Nick and Alex smashed out some Super Smash Bros Ultimate for an extremely long time. Alex's segment of the week: Awkward Christmas Questions! Question 1: What are you thoughts on Candy Canes? Question 2: Is there anything about Christmas you don't like that most people do like? Question 3: Who on your list is the hardest to buy for? Beer #2: Celebration Ale - Sierra Nevada (6.8% Fresh Hop IPA) Reddish color, hoppy finish but the fresh hops make it taste like a crisp holiday beer. No spices to overpower anything. Question 4: What is your least favorite Christmas song? This one got really heated. Alex was upset with Nick's pick and Nick was lost on what Alex thought was the worst. After the worst we both named our favorite Christmas songs as well. Sara joined us for this question. Alex comes right out and says he hates Trans-Siberian Orchestra. No one else is in agreement. Question 5: The true meaning of Christmas is… (the cringiest of questions) Question 6: Do you have a Christmas movie you have to watch during the season? Beer #3: Noel - Delirium (10% Belgian Triple) The quintessential holiday import. Highly carbonated and deep red in color. Caramel-y and syrupy. The alcohol is well hidden and the carbonation does not lend to a light drinking experience. We discuss the local breweries and their forays into Christmas ales and holiday beers. Mad Elf is obviously part of the conversation. We drink it in a little bit, so stay tuned. Question 7: What was your favorite gift ever? This question launches us into a discussion on Eeyore the donkey from Winnie the Pooh. Beer #4: Holly Jolly - Fatheads Brewery (7.4% Winter Warmer Ale) Very clear pouring but still darker than a standard IPA. Lots of spices but not overpowering. A very well balanced Christmas ale. (Add Fatheads to the breweries we Stan, this week) Holly Jolly being brewed with honey threw us into a conversation about Strange Roots and mead and it got a little weird. Wrapping up, we rank the beers we had tonight: Alex: #4: Holiday Donut Cookie - Platform #3: Noel - Delirium #2: Holly Jolly - Fatheads #1: Celebration - Sierra Nevada Nick: #4: Holiday Donut Cookie - Platform #3: Holly Jolly - Fatheads #2: Celebration - Sierra Nevada #1: Noel - Delirium We close it out with a Happy Holidays to all! It’s almost Halloween so of course we decide to charge ahead to trying some whales from the holidays of yore with our friend and co-worker Daniel Menestres! Daniel shares his Belgian background, relates how he got in the beer business, and then opens his vault to us with three terrific aged brews: 2013 Tröeg’s Mad Elf, 2014 Anchor Christmas, and 2015 Prairie Christmas Bomb! The news begins with another sign of the times courtesy of Vice reporting that a women-only craft beer forum has been shut down by a “men’s rights activist”. Next up Market Exclusive has a story on how BrewDog has launched the first cryptocurrency bar that accepts Bitcoin for drinks! Then we head to Chi-town via The Chicago Tribune (thanks Scott!) revealing that a Planters peanut IPA collaboration with Chicago brewer Noon Whistle tastes better than a gimmick! Then we close the week with The Miami Herald going over to OKC to find that not all Oklahoma brewpubs are offering higher ABV beers! You have great responses to last week’s #caskquiz “have you been influenced to purchase beer or cider to support a cause? Which products and causes?” This week we are curious about your take on the lead story regarding the shut down of the women-only beer forum. Was this justified? We so love hearing from you! In Episode 44, we sit down with Rick Gillette, singer and guitarist for popular Scranton pop rock band Nowhere Slow before his two shows next weekend at The V-Spot in Scranton. The first is on Friday, Jan. 26 at 9 p.m., and the second is the Action for Jackson benefit for local musician Jackson Vee on Sunday, Jan. 28, an all-day event where they’ll play at 3 p.m. Action for Jackson, which will help Jackson pay his medical bills, features 25 acts at three different venues - The V-Spot, Waldo’s Tavern, and Morgan'Z Pub & Eatery - with basket raffles, a 50/50, and more. Before and during the interview, we drink Beer Boys crowlers of Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf from 2016, and Sunshine Pils by Tröegs Brewing in Hershey in anticipation of Beer Boys’ 18th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Jan. 20, where they’ll have 18 special brews from Tröegs on tap, including year-round, seasonal, limited release scratch beers, and casks that you can’t get anywhere else. We talk about how Nowhere Slow got started 21 years ago when Rick was in high school, why he has continued to stick with it all the time, the enduring popularity of the band, their name and his love/hate relationship with it, their four original albums and how the fifth is shaping up, making a living as a working musician, choosing songs to cover and whether or not there is still a stigma with playing covers instead of originals, changes to the local music scene and venues over the last two decades, performing outside the area in vacation spots, getting people to come out to shows, a funny story about a sound wave project for schools, playing to huge crowds on Parade Day in Scranton and some of the craziness he has witnessed, his best and worst gigs, the Action for Jackson benefit, his goals going into 2018, and more. We also answer some questions and react to comments from live viewers, which largely involve jokes and ball busting. Writer and New York City comedian Jasmine Pierce (@jasminecomedy) joins Scott and Mike to talk about why she hates baseball, her worst moment as a Bengals fan, a better name for the Vegas Golden Knights, and how she survived her family's Thanksgiving. The fellas kick off a series of Christmas beers, with Tröegs Mad Elf. Jasmine and Mike team up to talk a ton of shit to Scott.
In this action packed episode, the hosts delve into four tantalizing Tröegs ales. They start with the year-round options Troegenator and LaGrave. Satisfied with their choices, the hosts move on to the elusive Nugget Nectar, then finish with a Mad Elf they fortuitously saved from Christmas. In addition to the brews, Dan and Chris reminisce about their time at the Tröegs brewery, including all its delicious beers and foods, and thanks to his meticulous beer tracking via Untappd, Chris can pinpoint exactly when he's had Tröegs' rare Scratch Series. Since they were driving down Memory Lane anyway, Dan and Chris also bring up a film they made in their misbegotten youth, The Chronicles of Shirtfinder. For some reason that is still highly unknown, the hosts also say "cockles" a lot in this episode. A bit more on topic, they also discuss the Beer Bracket that Untappd has running, and bring back the segment What I've Been Drinking. Lastly, no episode of YBOH would be complete without a story from Dan on beers and bathrooms.
This week, we taste a 2 year vertical of Troegs Mad Elf, discuss Momento being remade, remakes vs. reboots, and what movies we would like to see re-made.
