Last year, Colorado voters decided that grocery stores could sell wine along with beer, which had many independent liquor store owners nervous. With the holiday season in full swing, how are those mom and pop shops doing now with more competition? Host Bree Davies, producer Paul Karolyi, and newsletter editor Peyton Garcia discuss the liquor store conundrum, and talk about competitive eater and social media star Raina Huang's recent trip to Colorado — she downed 14 pounds of food in one day. We have no idea what's going on anymore. Some of the beer (or at least alcohol) news we see is just insane. Maybe we shouldn't judge too hard, we've all had our moments, remember Brian's BORG phase?Seems another ridiculous TikTok trend has people de-carbing their White Claws. If you're gonna do that, why not just get some crazy flavored vodka and mix with some water. I think that would actually be cheaper. Madness. And from the "I shouldn't be surprised that I'm surprised" file, Ultra Right beer is a hit. A special edition with Trump's mug shot on it apparently sold 20,000 six packs in record time. A little less insane, the popularity of hop water is increasing. We've dabbled. Hop Lark was on the show a few years ago and we've even made some hop water ourselves. It's not really my thing, but Brian digs it.And we've got one last round of stats from this year's Oktoberfest. They hit record attendance in 2023, but sold less beer than previous years. Oh well, at least people were showing up.Beers of the WeekReuben's Brews / Monday Night - Surround SoundXul Beer Co - Rhymes Like DimesHalfway Crooks - Whole Cone Fest MarzenUntitled Art/ Collective Arts Brewing - Cotton CandyGood Word - Any Day NowBurnt Hickory Brewing - Big Shanty (Graham Cracker Stout)Hi Wire 10 Years of Hi Wire | Blend of BBA 10W-40 Imperial Stout, BBA Barleywine, and BBA Belgian-style QuadSourceshttps://allaboutbeer.com/why-hop-water-is-great-for-breweries-and-consumershttps://vinepair.com/articles/urine-in-corona-hoax/https://www.forbes.com/sites/dontse/2023/10/07/2023-oktoberfest-was-the-biggest-beer-party-ever/https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/04/molson-coors-ceo-on-non-alcoholic-drinks-were-moving-beyond-beer.htmlhttps://vinepair.com/booze-news/iwsr-data-at-home-drinking-trend/Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! We kick off the new year with Rockies and Rangers boyfriends. Patti is already considering Rangers pitching for our wacky fantasy league, but that's separate from picking Josh Smith, because LSU and other compelling factors. Pottymouth selects Nathaniel Lowe because he's a pottymouth, and other compelling reasons. For the Rockies, Patti and Dante Bichette both see the potential in Brendan Rodgers, and Pottymouth likes that Yonatan Daza is always dancing. A Dominican court convicted ten people on charges including criminal organization, use of illegal firearms, attempted murder, and complicity in the murder attempt of David Ortiz in 2019. Former Oriole Adam Jones helps Pottymouth's dad feel better about the Red Sox. We reassure you that movement is happening, quietly and slowly, toward the minor league's first collective bargaining agreement. So much happening in international baseball including a preview of the Serie del Caribe, a heads up to start making plans for the 9th Women's Baseball World Cup to be held in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and the news that diplomacy prevails and Cuban-born MLB players will be permitted to play for the Cuban team in the World Baseball Classic. On a happy pod note, Patti and the Pottymouth are officially going to Miami for two quarterfinal games and one semi-final game so get in touch if you'll be there too! Patti wants you to read a fiction series about hockey because you'll cry in a good way, and makes Pottymouth drink a Christmas beer, also in a good way.We say, “that sounds like a Patrick Swayze movie,” “at some point that was not yet now,” and “this is what happens when I break my toe and I'm on vacation.” Get boosted, fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. This week Greg sat down with Randy Meyers. Randy is a teacher, author, professor, and home brewer. So Greg took full advantage and had a discussion while reviewing their favorite Christmas craft beers. They discussed how Calvinists (and all believers) can become misguided in their theology, assuming grace may abound, and ignoring the seriousness of their sin and the lack of their works, all while tasting and reviewing six of their favorite Christmas craft beers. It's the most wonderful time to drink beer... Winter beers are the best beers. I know it, you know it, we all know it. Our holiday beer blind tasting has become a tradition. Last year our friends from Rainy Day Brewing joined us for the tasting. They commented that you know it's getting bad when they have to "Call in the Jews" for a Christmas beer tasting. We liked their style so we rolled with that this year for the 2nd Annual Interfaith Holiday Craft Beer Spectacular, cause we're inclusive like that. Rules are the same as always. Blind taste the beer and pick your favorite. Simple. At the end of the show we tally everyone's favorites for an overall Top 3. This year's holiday beers included... Abita Christmas Ale St. Bernardus Christmas Ale Highland Cold Mountain Bold Monk Leon Anchor Christmas Ale Shiner Cheer Rogue Santa's Private Reserve Delirium Noel N'ice Chouffe Bell's Christmas Ale Southern Tier 2XMAS Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Sierra Nevada Celebration 21st Amendment Fireside Chat I'm gonna be straight with you here. Overall, this year's offerings didn't seem to meet the mark we expect of many of these beers. We've had many of these before and had high expectations. However, there are a few standouts and you'll no doubt have some good selections to enjoy through the holidays. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and we hope you enjoy any other holiday you celebrate. Cheers! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Did you miss us? It's been an... adventurous... couple of weeks. While driving down the interstate another car decided to see how fast they could go and I got in his way. After ping-ponging me off a couple of other cars, I walked away, but my trusty Ford Explorer did not. RIP. Brian was going to carry on, but then he got the flu and spent a week locked away from everyone. BUT, we're back and (mostly) good as new. Fireside Beer Chat Vol. 2 Smalls joined us in the studio this week along with our friend Earnest Hansley so we opened some beers and ran on about the hot topics in beer right now. I'm calling these episodes our Fireside Beer Chat. We have no fire, but it's there in spirit.GABF is underway in Denver and expects 40,000 attendees this year. It's a great event that every beer lover should attend at least once. Denver pulls out all the stops for the week and it's a great time all around. We talk seasonal creep that leads to Spooky Season, Thanksgiving sides, and Holiday beers and talk about how big we like our cans. And we argue about Rauchbier and American vs. English Barleywines. Have you ever gotten drunk at a holiday party, gone to a gentleman's club, and ended up making your sister cry? Beergirl Melissa drops in to hang with Flex and Greg. The group is ringing in the holidays with their favorite drunk Christmas stories, creepy European holiday animals, Christmas in Finland, and those crazy Germans and their sexy Christmas.Greg kicks off the hydration with Stone Brewing's Xocoveza Tres Leches. Then, Melissa comes in off the top rope with Santa's Private Reserve Ale - Kringle Krusher from Rogue Ales. Finally, Flex is getting into the spirit with Warmest Wishes, a holiday milk stout from Phase Three Brewing. When it comes to drunk holiday stories, you are covered. Flex had to dress up as Santa at work while still throwing up from the night before. Melissa got hydrated with co-workers and ended up angering some dancers at a gentleman's club. Greg hates his wife's co-workers and tries to sabotage the holiday party. Listener Martín writes in to share his holiday drunk-punch. Then, the crew travels to Finland to learn about their holiday traditions. It turns out the Europeans love their creepy holiday animals. And Chew Your Beer calls in to wish everyone a happy Chew year. Thanks to Washington DC for the holiday-themed Ludicrous Libation Law.We wrap things up with Greg's favorite holiday tradition; the dropping of the yule log.Melissa:www.instagram.com/beergirl_melissa Flexy: www.instagram.com/flex_me_a_beer Craft Beer Republic: www.CraftBeerRepublic.com www.instagram.com/CraftBeerRepublic www.facebook.com/CraftBeerRepublicPod www.twitter.com/CraftBeerRepub (805) 538-2337 Use promo code UNFILTERED on Tavour.

There are a lot of winter and “Christmas” beers that come out around the holidays, but do they all really count as Christmas beers? We take three completely different styles of “Christmas” beers and put them to the test to see if they are Christmas enough! It's time for the second annual Itch 12 Pods of Christmas, wherein we shout out some of our favorite podcast friends and direct you, the listener, to a pair of episodes from across our shows to keep you entertained through the holiday season. We're very grateful for the kindness and camaraderie shown by the Twitter podcast community and the opportunities we've had to guest on other shows, as well as to have other hosts as guests on ours. One such show is Beer'd Al, wherein Lauren and John Carey talk about two of the greatest things in the world: beer and Weird Al. You can find the Beer'd Al Podcast at: beerdalpodcast.com and on the Twitters @beerdalpodcast. We recommend listening to The Itch's guest appearance, in which we discussed Alapalooza and broke a record that didn't even need to exist. And follow that up with our episode, Songs About Your Mom, which we're pretty sure would make Lauren laugh. And hey, when you're done, follow our New Rock Roundup playlist and then connect with us! itchrocks.com Twitter.com/itchrocks Facebook.com/itchrocks Instagram.com/itchrocks itchrocks@gmail.com Thank you so much for listening. Best Christmas Beers of 2021 Christmas, the most wonderful time to drink beer Ahhh, who am I kidding? It's ALWAYS the most wonderful time to drink beer. But, Christmas is a great time for beer. Beautiful Belgian ales, spiced Winter Warmers, maybe some glühkriek? Christmas beers are some of our favorites and we look forward to this show each year. With a sampling of Christmas brews from around the world we blind taste them with our friends and pick our favorites. This year, Ron and Michael from Rainy Day Brewery joined us on the show. We didn't even think about the fact they are Jewish when we invited them over for Christmas, but they were happy to join us and the show became a nice, interfaith celebration. L'chaim! There are no set rules for our "competition." We simply taste the beers and decide if we like them. Make some notes, share our favorites, and then tally the scores for a top three. To keep things festive we share some fun trivia and facts about Christmas and drinking traditions. Wassailing and such. It's a good time all around. Michael talks about beer and food pairing, a very important component of enjoying beer to the fullest and is an important segment in Cicerone studies. They then move on to the first new segment of the podcast, Triple B, which stands for Blindfolded Beer Badge, where Michael blind tastes 2 beers of same or similar style and tries to guess which one's which. This week he had Hop Sounds by Singlecut Beersmiths, a crushable and refreshing IPA which the creators actually identify as a Kolsch vs. Mandarin Galaxy by Vasen Brewing, a fruity DIPA. Cheers, Merry Christmas, and happy holidays everyone! We got together with some of our beerest friends to share some Christmas beer and cheer. The Booze League's Commissioner, Coley, and BDN join friends-of-the show Brian and Deb along with Shannon to play a game of "Guess that Christmas Beer" (to not spoil the beer for those that want to play along, the beers will be listed at the very end of the show notes). Ramon Tamayo is our guest on Brew Ha Ha with Steve Jaxon and Mark Carpenter. He holds Mark's former job as brewmaster at Anchor Brewing in San Francisco. Mark Carpenter starts the show with a beer from Anchor and introduces Ramon Tamayo who is the current head brewer at Anchor. He says, "I picked up the baton where Mark left it." He's doing some very creative stuff, Mark says, such as a Brewer's Pale Ale. Steve asks Ramon to tell how he got into brewing. He was a home brewer in college, which was necessary while he was too young to go out and buy beer. He loved the art and science and the enjoyment of the hard work. He just made beer to drink with his friends. He grew up in Petaluma. Herlinda mentions that he is part of the Tamayo family that founded a famous local business, La Tortilla Factory, which is famous. Mark asks him to explain the Citra Pale Ale. After Mark left Anchor, they opened a successful 7-barrel brewhouse. He made this beer in the main facility, just like the old was Anchor used to do it, 125 barrels. Ramon says he learned a lot from Mark at the brewery. Herlinda remembers a Gigantes beer, that they made to celebrate the San Francisco Giants baseball team. For him it was an honor to work with another iconic San Francisco brand. Mark tells about the way San Francisco was in the late 1960s, it was the time of the hippies and everything. "It was a fabulous time." When he started at Anchor, they only made Steam. But they started Liberty Ale, the first IPA in America, and several other types that were the first of their kind. They also started a distillery to make whiskey and gin. Now Anchor has a brewpub now, and food trucks that come. Mark tells the history of Steam beer. With the Gold Rush came beer drinkers. The brewers tried to set up brewing as fast as they could. They did not have refrigeration so they could not make lager beer. They called "Steam" a beer that was an "artificial lager beer" fermented at temperatures that were more similar to ales or old school beers. They they would Kräusen it, which is a second fermentation. Mark thinks it serves to clean up the beer. It's cleaner and crisper, which makes lager popular because it's easy to drink. As soon as they could use refrigeration, other brewers stopped using this process, except Anchor. Anchor will always make Steam beer, it's their main variety. They also do a Christmas Beer, that Fritz Maytag started many years ago. There is a different tree on the label every year. The recipe is pretty secret but he says they will have a Korean Pine Tree on the label. Herlinda says this year's Christmas Beer is rich and stout. It's available already, in late October.
