Dan, Manny, & Billy welcome writer and director Jonathan Salemi to talk all about filming the indie action drama film The Last Deal. “A couple places ran with the headline, [The Last Deal] is the biggest guerrilla film in the last two decades. I have no proof of that or against it, but I'd say we're definitely in the running.” -Jonathan Salemi This episode of Nostalgia 101 is a detailed lesson from writer and director Jonathan Salemi on what it takes to make an indie film in the recent state of the movie industry. Jonathan starts with his experience interning at Sony Pictures to field producing for major networks like Lifetime and History Channel. He talks about the many stories behind filming The Last Deal guerrilla style in LA during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the true story that inspired the movie, and his experience shooting in various LA locations without permits. Jonathan answers the guys' questions about specific scenes in the movie, he shares some behind-the-scenes anecdotes and what went into casting. They end the episode with Jonathan's upcoming project and his ranking of the Rocky movies. There's so much more! Email us (thenostalgiatest@gmail.com) your thoughts and opinions about this episode and we'll talk about them on a future episode.   Jonathan Salemi is a feature film director, writer and producer. Send us a Text Message.Ready to hear why "Logan" is not just another superhero movie? Join us for Project Geekology's 88th episode as we unpack the 2017 film that redefined the X-Men franchise, starring Hugh Jackman in his final(not really) bow as Wolverine. We start off with Anthony's recent gaming escapades, including his surprisingly balanced take on the Suicide Squad game, despite its mixed reviews. Plus, get his thoughts on World of Warcraft and his budding interest in the new Suicide Squad isekai anime, setting the stage for a bigger conversation about why game studios need to listen to their fans.Ever wondered how "Logan" managed to stand out in a crowded superhero landscape? We discuss "Logan's" mature and gritty tone, exploring how "Deadpool" might have paved the way for its success. As Anthony gears up for an appearance at Supercon on behalf of Crunchyroll, we're also teasing an upcoming Star Wars-themed episode designed to help newcomers navigate the expansive galaxy far, far away. Whether you're into movies, TV shows, gaming, or novels, we've got tips for every type of Star Wars fan.Daphne Keen's portrayal of X-23 is nothing short of phenomenal, and we break down her fierce fight scenes and emotional depth. The film's poignant portrayal of aging heroes like Charles Xavier and Wolverine adds another layer of complexity, making "Logan" a truly unique entry in the superhero genre. As we reflect on the themes of mortality and legacy, you'll hear why this movie resonates on an emotional level. On episode 224 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Cody Dericks to take a look back and review The Matrix for its 25th anniversary and give out their Top 5 1990s Action Films. As talked about a couple of times on the AwardsWatch Podcast as well as on Director Watch, 1999 is one of the greatest years for cinema, not just in the modern era but of all time. The collective batch of films released in that last year of the 20th century profoundly spoke to the times they were released, while also paving the way for the next 25 years of films and filmmakers to come. One of the most influential films from that year was The Matrix, which just celebrated its anniversary of release just a few days ago. In a wonderful conversation, Ryan, Dan, and Cody break down this one-of-a-kind sci-fi-noir- action spectacle, talking about what the films means to them and so many others, as well as it's substantial legacy that has made it stand as one of the best films of all time. In the back half of the show, in honor of speaking about The Wachowski's masterpiece, the AW team go back to their nostalgic pasts and talk about their Top 5 action movies released within the 1990s. A bountiful decade to choose from, they were able to narrow this difficult exercise down with films like Mission: Impossible, Twister, Heat, Speed, Face/Off, Saving Private Ryan, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and more were discussed. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h14m. On our next episode, we will be reviewing Dev Patel's directorial debut, Monkey Man, and talking about our favorite actor-director debut feature films. Story Works Round Table | Conversations About Craft | Before You Can Be a Successful Author, You Have to Write a Great Story

This week on the Story Works Round Table, Alida and Kathryn welcome screenwriter Tim Auld back to the round table to discuss heroes. What makes a hero resonate with an audience? Tim Auld introduces us to the concept of ordinary heroism, a principle that suggests heroes should be inherently inadequate to the challenges they face. It's this inadequacy, this underdog status, that endears them to us and makes their journey emotionally gripping. He illustrates this point with a powerful image: an orangutan striking a crane with a stick, a futile yet emotionally charged act of defiance. It's a metaphor for the kind of heroism that Tim believes should be at the heart of storytelling. Throughout the conversation, Tim emphasizes the importance of allowing heroes to fail and suffer. It's through their trials and tribulations that we, the audience, find a piece of ourselves, empathizing with their struggle and rooting for their success. He also touches on the current trends in storytelling, where characters are often portrayed as too perfect, too idealized, which can disconnect them from the audience. Are you ready to get more out of your writing, to grow your writing skills, and get that novel done faster? Do you want community, feedback, and mentoring? Check out group coaching for novelists. “Tae Bo sold 115 million copies and revolutionized the fitness world.  It changed the way people talked about fitness, I was the first person that talked about inside out.  Most people didn't really talk about the inside, most people talked about changing your hips, your legs, your bum, and your arms, but nobody talked about the heart.  I was the only one talking about the heart.  If you really want to change your life, you have to change what is going on on the inside.  What if all of a sudden God gave you the best body in the world, would that change who you are as a person? No, because the inside is still the same, outside may look different but what is carrying that body is still the same thought pattern.  Change the inside before the outside can change.”—Billy BlanksMy guest this episode is the one and only Billy Blanks who is a 9'th Degree Black Belt and one of the greatest Karate Fighters in history.  He is a 7-time world Karate Champion, the first Amateur Athletic Union Champ in 1975, and a Golden Gloves boxing Champion of Champions.  He was the captain of the United States Karate Team and won over 30 Gold medals in international competitions.  He is the founder of the sensational “Tae Bo” fitness system that sold over 115 million copies and revolutionized the fitness world.  Mr. Blanks was inducted into the world Karate Hall of Fame in 1982.This episode is all about transformation from the inside out.  My key takeaway is that success in martial arts and life begins with unlocking the heart.  We all experience fears and doubts that cause us to put up protective walls, these walls stop us from feeling, growing, and honestly expressing ourselves.  Our true gifts remain hidden behind these walls, but the practice of martial arts pierces these walls, and allows us to discover who we truly are and gives us the ability to face our challenges with courage, confidence, and clarity.  We also dive deep into training philosophy and how to perform under pressure at the highest levels of competition.  We discuss the value of testing your skills, to see how you can improve and to find out where you stand instead of focusing on outcomes like winning and losing.  Mr. Blanks shares some great stories of overcoming adversity, the early Karate Scene, and finding greatness through the service of others.  I was really moved by this episode, and Mr. Billy Blanks truly has the heart of a champion.
