The Industrial Hemp Podcast is back after a short break. Episode one of Season Four is available now. The theme of this episode is Good News, because there seems to be a fair amount of it these days in the hemp space. One such piece of positivity comes to us from podcast guest Morgan Tweet, executive director of the Hemp Feed Coalition, a nonprofit organization working to gain federal approval for hemp grain as a commercial livestock feed. “The good news to share is we've completed a key milestone in the regulatory pathway for federal approval, specifically for hemp seed meal, as an ingredient for laying hens,” said Tweet. “This is a big deal,” she said. “We got the nod of approval from FDA CVM. They have made the recommendation for approval, to allow this as an ingredient. So it's a big deal. It's a long time coming.” On this episode, Tweet explains the process of introducing new ingredients into the commercial feed supply and how hemp presents some unique challenges to the feed control officials. She said there are still hoops to jump through but expects hemp seed meal to be granted approval as a feed for laying hens after a final vote by the Association of American Feed Control Officials this August. Continuing with theme of good news, hempcrete builder Cameron McIntosh shares the news on this episode that his company Americhanvre has been awarded a Small Business Innovation Research grant. “We received a fully funded direct-to-phase-two award, worth $1.9 million, for research and for studying the Ereasy hempcrete system and methodology,” McIntosh said. “So that's about the best news I could give you.” The system is a spray-applied method of building with hempcrete, a faster and more efficient delivery system compared to the traditional cast-in-place method of building with hemp. “Building and construction are globally responsible for 30% of our carbon emissions,” McIntosh said. “I think (this grant) is an acknowledgment by, not only the U.S. Army, but the entire Department of Defense and even the entire federal government that they need to encourage and be interested in carbon sequestering, sustainable, renewable building technologies,” he said. We'll also hear some good news from Patrick Atagi, president and CEO of the National Industrial Hemp Council of America, about the work his organization is doing to get hemp on a level playing field with other commodity crops in the eyes of the USDA. And finally, Tennessee filmmakers Jordan Berger and Maxwell Duryea stop by the Lancaster Farming podcast studio in Ephrata to share some good news about their documentary about industrial hemp called One Plant.

This week on the hemp podcast, Lancaster Farming talks with Alejandra Diaz, a hemp entrepreneur, educator and activist from Los Angeles. Diaz does business development and sales for Hemp Fortex, a Chinese manufacturer of sustainable textiles with a specialization in hemp fabrics. “Most of our fiber comes from China, and currently sourcing some from France as well,” Diaz said. “And (we are) now looking to the U.S. and other parts of the world to source fiber.” Diaz has been a leader in her community, organizing education programs around hempcrete, hemp farming and hemp clothing. Also on the podcast this week, we share an interesting hempcrete project. It's a collaboration between the Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast and Americhanvre Cast-Hemp, a hempcrete building company based in Barto, Pennsylvania. The idea was to build hempcrete acoustic panels for the walls of the new podcast studio in Lancaster Farming's Ephrata office. Earlier this week, podcast host Eric Hurlock and Cameron MacIntosh from Americhanvre built wooden frames and filled them with pigmented hempcrete using the cast in place method. The panels will spend the next few weeks curing in the Americhanvre shop and then will be trimmed out with HempWood, a hemp-based wood alternative made in Kentucky. In April of 2010, Janae and Rodney Hostetter received devastating news. At only 12 weeks pregnant, they learned their baby girl had a severe birth defect called Anencephaly. This birth defect made their daughter "incompatible with life." They were told she would likely die a few minutes after being born. Janae and Rodney knew this child was a gift from God, so they quickly declined the option of abortion. Even though they did not see their daughter — Aliyah Joy — healed on this side of Heaven, they did see God begin to write a powerful redemptive story over her short life. Ready to hear how God uses this story for His glory and Kingdom purposes on Earth? Let's go! JANAE HOSTETTER is passionate about seeing an end to abortion. She has the privilege of serving on the board for Align Life Ministries with her husband who shares this same passion. Align Life is a gospel-centered ministry that provides pregnancy services and resources to families across Lancaster and Lebanon Counties in Pennsylvania. Rodney and Janae live in Ephrata, Pennsylvania and Janae enjoys being a stay-at- home mom to their four children ages 10, 8, 6 and 4. Cloister Talk: The Pennsylvania German Material Texts Podcast
One of the most wonderful things about Pennsylvania German studies is the opportunity they open for interdisciplinary research. In fact, interdisciplinary perspectives that draw on multiple theories, methodological approaches, and research skill sets are required to develop a fulsome view of Pennsylvania German culture. In this episode of Cloister Talk, musicologist Dr. Christopher Dylan Herbert grants us special insights into his research focused on the music of the Ephrata community. We consider Dr. Herbert's inspirations for exploring Ephrata's rich and complex musical heritage, the findings of his research, and the value of interdisciplinary methods in a shifting scholarly landscape. Listen to Dr. Herbert's new album of Ephrata music, Voices in the Wilderness, here: https://open.spotify.com/album/6iPkwxZsUaOEbY2zeB4gf0. Note: This interview was recorded live and in-person. Occasionally, the host's questions and comments were not picked up by the mic, but the interview guest's responses are all clear.

Luke and Julie Weaver make their first appearance on the Larry Kreider Leadership Podcast to share their leadership insights and how they helped to start YWAM Lancaster. Listen as they explain how they make decisions as a couple in a God-honoring way, the impact of getting your entire family involved in your ministry, and the importance of remembering that God is the author of the plan. Luke and Julie Weaver helped to pioneer YWAM Lancaster, located in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. YWAM Lancaster's mission is to train disciples to reach the unreached internationally, grow and develop leaders, and fulfill the Great Commission. Luke currently serves as the director of YWAM Lancaster. The Weavers have six children and reside in Lancaster, PA. Quotable Quotes: "I'm living and dying based upon seeing the fulfillment of the dream of God." "We cannot do it on our own." Highlights: Give 100% in everything you do for the Lord. Wait, and then move forward with a decision once you and your spouse are on the same page about what God is saying. Write down whatever you hear from God to help you process and remember. Keep your focus on the journey itself rather than the end result. Your journey will have twists and turns. It will not be linear. You may not have the same role throughout your leadership journey. However, you need to maintain the same heart in every position. Isaiah 62 Habakkuk 2 I Peter 1:23 What God is planning is so much bigger than you. Over the past year, the housing market has seen high demand from buyers, fewer homes for sale, and higher prices. As the Federal Reserve raises interest rates, what impact will it have on home sales? In Pennsylvania, 12,759 homes were sold from June of 2021 to last month; more than 33,000 were for sale, the houses for sale and sold were on the market for a median of 20 days and 53% of homes sold above list price. New Cumberland is one of the hottest locations for homes sales in the country while Camp Hill, Ephrata and Mechanicsburg are all in Pennsylvania's most competitive markets. Friday's Smart Talk zeroes in on the housing market with Christopher Beadling, President of the Pennsylvania Association of Realtors and Elle Hale, President of the Realtors Association of York and Adams Counties.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Navigating the tension between different generational groups can sometimes feel like a minefield. How do we overcome the common frustrations that come with generational differences? In today's episode, Wes Dudley and Larry Kreider break down the distinctions between each generation and discuss the importance of building bridges between each age group with a spirit of honor and service. Wes Dudley is the executive pastor and young adult director of DOVE Westgate Church in Ephrata, Pennsylvania. He lives in Ephrata with his two children and wife, Juliana. Wes also serves on several committees for the Borough of Ephrata. The 5 Generations: Greatest Generation Baby Boomers Gen X Millennials Gen Z Highlights: Leaders need to be purposeful in bringing the generations together. When team building, look for any generational gaps you have at the table. Ask the younger generations, “What can I do to help you? How can I serve you and meet you where you are at? How can I help you succeed?” Colossians 3:13 1 Peter 2:9 Quotable Quotes: “In times of crisis the wise build bridges while the foolish build dams.” -African proverbs “I believe what really happens in history is this: the old man is always wrong; and the young people are always wrong about what is wrong with him. The practical form it takes is this: that, while the old man may stand by some stupid custom, the young man always attacks it with some theory that turns out to be equally stupid.” -G. K. Before taking on a pastoral role, Deryl Hurst had started his own company and worked in the real estate business for many years, allowing him to gain valuable leadership skills. In today's episode, listen as Deryl recalls how he received a calling to ministry through a prophetic word as a young child and how God led him in what he now realizes was a preparatory journey in leadership. Today, Deryl Hurst serves as the lead pastor at Westgate Church in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, alongside his wife, Mim. Deryl has been a part of the Westgate Church family for over 30 years and has served as a small group leader, elder, and executive pastor. Highlights: Take ownership - This deals with making decisions and taking responsibility. A natural reaction is to justify yourself and explain, but taking ownership also means bearing the burden of leadership. Seek first to understand - When approaching confrontation, seek first to understand before seeking to be understood. Business leaders have access, influence, and relational opportunities to aid in sharing their faith in the marketplace. Spend more time in prayer - Instead of relying on your own intuition and intelligence, look to run your business differently and see the Holy Spirit for guidance and direction. Serve the person you are under and be dedicated to their success - A rising tide raises all ships. Find the truth in unjust criticism - Look for the 5% of truth in the unjust criticism you are receiving, don’t try to justify yourself, and let the rest go. Strive towards excellence rather than perfection. Work on becoming an effective communicator. Utilize personality assessments to understand the strengths and distinctiveness of your team. Engage in the process God is taking you through - Keep the vision/dream in front of you and reference it often, but realize it doesn’t have to happen tomorrow. Continue to train and learn.
