What Gene Hackman's death can teach home care and family caregivers

Gene Hackman's death offers a vivid example of the choices older adults and their family caregivers need to consider such as where to live and how to develop a network of support, Andrea Cohen, board chair of the Caregiver Action Network and founder of HouseWorks, said. Home care can play a role in these conversations, Anne Tumlinson, founder and CEO of ATI Advisory and founder of the family caregiver group Daughterhood, said. Home care must treat family caregivers as one of their key stakeholders, along with the client and employee, Cohen said. When she started HouseWorks, a personal care company, family caregivers were invisible. No longer. Family caregiver training is much better than it used to be. Public policy also has shifted so that, through the new GUIDE Model, Medicare now recognizes the important role that family caregivers of loved ones with dementia face, Tumlinson said. Going forward, home care companies need to be strategic and provide a range of services, such as home modifications, for their clients. Tumlinson agreed. The most successful home-based care models are interdisciplinary and scalable, she said. And they must be data-driven, Cohen added. Providing for family caregivers is essential. Taking care of them helps to solve problems for the hospital and healthcare plan and other parts of the healthcare system.Follow us on social media:X: @McKHomeCareFacebook: McKnight's Home CareLinkedIn: McKnight's Home CareInstagram: mcknights_homecareFollow Caregiver Action Network on social media:Facebook: Caregiver Action NetworkLinkedIn: Caregiver Action NetworkInstagram:@caregiveractionFollow ATI Advisory on social media:LinkedIn: ATI AdvisoryFollow Daughterhood on social media:Facebook: DaughterhoodInstagram: Daughterhood

The Relationship Guy

Relationship coach John Kenny interviews Angie Tomlinson, a student of the science of the mind. Angie shares her personal journey of overcoming tragedy and finding her true identity. After experiencing multiple deaths in her family and feeling lost and unfulfilled, Angie discovered the power of the natural universal laws and began studying with Bob Proctor. By changing her mindset and embracing the law of polarity, Angie transformed her life and achieved incredible success, turning her annual income into a monthly income of 50k. She shares her insights on the importance of self-study, reprogramming beliefs, and creating a new reality. KEY TAKEAWAYS The power of mindset: Angie's journey highlights the importance of changing one's mindset and beliefs in order to achieve success. By shifting her mindset and adopting new beliefs, she was able to transform her life and achieve her financial goals. The law of polarity: Angie learned about the law of polarity, which states that things just are until we assign meaning to them. By consciously choosing to focus on positive thoughts and feelings, she was able to attract abundance and success into her life. Taking inspired action: Angie didn't just visualise her goals, she took inspired action towards them. She wrote a story as if she was already making 50k a month and made changes in her life to align with that vision. She hired a housekeeper, stopped doing certain tasks, and focused on activities that brought her joy and fulfilment. Overcoming limiting beliefs: Angie had to overcome limiting beliefs that were ingrained in her from her upbringing and religious background. She had to challenge the idea that she had to work hard for her money and that wealth was somehow negative. By reprogramming her beliefs and embracing her own worth and empowerment, she was able to achieve financial success. Embracing personal growth: Angie's journey involved a deep exploration of herself and her own identity. She realised that she had never truly studied herself and had been living according to other people's expectations. Through personal growth and self-discovery, she was able to find her true desires and create a life that aligned with her authentic self. BEST MOMENTS "I started studying with Bob and I started listening to his stuff, which is so interesting, because my paradigm or my way of thinking is, especially growing up in the church, you don't listen to outside voices."  "I made the decision, I'm going to pursue this goal. I want to turn my annual income into a monthly income. And my husband threw a birthday party for me. And I had a bunch of friends there. And they asked me, what did I want to do this year around the sun? And I said, I want to turn my annual income into a monthly income." "I remember people were like, oh, yay, well, good luck with that. And everybody just kind of ignored me. And I was like, wow, this is interesting. And so I realised I couldn't share my goal with other people." "I had been working and doing what I was doing so much and working on my mindset that the physical, I didn't know how to live in the physical life yet. I've been living in the spiritual and the intellect part of it, but I didn't know how to really live in the physical."  "You're this person, let's get on with it. I kept studying myself. I kept going forward. And pretty soon I started making 50,000 a month, every single month. And then I thought, what happens if I could do it twice a month? Then what happens if I could do it three times a month? And before I knew it, I was a millionaire and I had no idea I had become a millionaire."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Links: www.johnkennycoaching.comThe Bicycle Affect: https://youtu.be/oO7XZGvdWnoRelationship Video course and 1-2-1 coaching: Relationship Ready Online Programme - John Kenny (johnkennycoaching.com)To get in touch - email – john@johnkennycoaching.com or book a complimentary call –https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30minIf people want to order a copy of the book then they can just pay postage of £4.95 (RRP £8.99) - www.johnkennycoaching.com/podcast-book-offerWant to be able to address the relationship issues in your life? - Why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get the new started with some new types of relationships - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30minThe Relationship Guy Podcast - https://omny.fm/shows/the-relationship-guy  CONTACT METHOD Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/johnkennycoaching LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-kenny-coaching

On this episode we're discussing talking plants and smart insects with entomologist and author Dr. Joe Lewis. Lewis spent his career in entomology with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service at the Tifton Campus of the University of Georgia. It was there that he worked to unlock the secrets of how plants and insects communicate with one another, particularly how plants use SOS signals to recruit beneficial insects to their defense. Based on those groundbreaking insights, Lewis and his colleagues developed holistic and sustainable approaches to pest management within agricultural systems. In 2008, along with his colleagues John A, Pickett and James H. Tumlinson, Lewis received the prestigious Wolf Prize in Agriculture. Although Lewis has published papers in many academic and scientific journals, he's just published his first book for Acres U.S.A. It's call A New Farm Language: How a Sharecropper's Son Discovered a World of Talking Plants, Smart Insects, and Natural Solutions. The book tells the story of Joe Lewis's humble beginnings as the son of an illiterate Mississippi sharecropper and the hardscrabble, yet happy childhood he spent raising chickens and growing cotton. It was on that small, rented farm, which had no electricity or indoor plumbing, that Lewis developed a fondness for nature that would set him on an unlikely path toward becoming an eminent scientist and innovator. More than a memoir, A New Farm Language is a manifesto and mission statement confronting the abuses of industrial agriculture and defending the value of strong communities and natural solutions.

This episode is all about one of the most fascinating topics: space. Our guest is Rick Tumlinson, the co-founder of several space companies and non-profits, and one of the most influential people in the space industry. Rick kicked off the episode by talking about the book The High Frontier and how it inspired him to get into the industry. He then gave us a rundown of the space industry from a business lens. Tim followed up by asking how the space industry was funded. It was absolutely interesting to hear Rick speak about private vs government and China vs the U.S. in this new "space competition." We were intrigued by Rick's description of what a settlement could be like in space, and where he predicted those places may be. Nathaniel asked Rick's opinion on what Elon Musk's and Jeff Bezo's passion for space could mean for Telsa and Amazon, respectively. Rick's closing speech was powerful: to bring lives to dead space, to redesign our civilization and culture in a new era, that's our job, and that's where our future lies.

Kevin Tumlinson is Marketing Director at Draft2Digital and a prolific and bestselling author of thrillers. Draft2Digital was founded in 2012 to provide an easy way to format and distribute your ebook. One of D2D's recent partnerships is with Bibliotheca, which extends their reach to libraries, a market overlooked by many self-publishers. Find out why it’s a great way to increase discoverability, about the mechanics of how ebook licenses get delivered and purchased by libraries, how the cost per checkout model (CPC) model allows as many patrons who want the book to check it out at the same time, and about the potential to make a lot more money by distributing to libraries. We discuss the importance of audiobooks, too which Tumlinson says is “the new frontier” of book publishing because the market isn’t yet saturated. Draft2Digital has a partnership with Findaway Voices to help you get that process started. Author pages also come up in our conversation, and not just your Amazon Central Author page but your free author page from Draft2Digital’s sister site Books2Read. Even if you haven’t published using Draft2Digital, you can use Books2Read author page, book page, and universal book link. A universal book link creates a single trackable link that shows readers where it’s sold. See an example: The Girl in the Mayan Tomb by Kevin Tumlinson. Other features that I think you’ll find interesting are the automated front and end matter, including the Contents and the Also By page, and their book formatting tool that Tumlinson says is their “own version of Vellum” but for both Mac and Windows, with templates that output both ebook and print book formats. The author of more than 30 books, Tumlinson talks from both sides of the author-aggregator equation, and I know you'll benefit from his insights.  ADDITION: BONUS CONTENT: KEVIN ANNOUNCES D2D POD PRINT

1. When you need someone to faithfully implement your time-tested policies and procedures, hire a straight-A student. This is what we know about them: A. They bought into the educational system, believed its promises, and played by its rules. B. They have demonstrated obedience, compliance, and conformity. C. They have obvious respect for authority. And these are not bad things. 2. When you need to innovate, improvise or reinvent, hire a rascal.1This is what we know about them: A. They mistrust the system, laugh at its promises, and make up their own rules. B. They have demonstrated disobedience, defiance, and abnormity. C. They have obvious respect for alternative thinking. Steve Jobs was a rascal with an unimpressive résumé. When Steve applied for a job at Hewlett-Packard in 1977, they rejected him because he had dropped out of Reed College in 1972. “Quitters never win.” That's the traditional wisdom. Ask any high school football coach. And Steve Jobs was definitely a quitter. Jan Koum was a bonafide rascal. When he was 20, his ex-girlfriend got a restraining order against him. He later said, “I am ashamed of the way I acted, and ashamed that my behavior forced her to take legal action”. Jan Koum was also a quitter. Facebook refused to hire him in 2008 because he had dropped out of San Jose State. Here's what was on Jan's resume for the previous year: “I traveled around South America playing ultimate frisbee.” I can almost see that HR director rolling her eyes, can't you?In 2009, Jan Koum founded WhatsApp, an innovation he sold to Facebook in 2014 for $9.1 billion. Steve Jobs and Jan Koum are mentioned in the opening paragraph of a 59-page study2 published by two academicians in 2017. That paper is titled Asymmetric Information and Entrepreneurship. Its scholarly authors reached their conclusions only after analyzing 12,686 individuals over a period of more than 30 years. I'll do my best to summarize those 59 pages:“A person is motivated to start their own business when they have more confidence in their ability than they have in their résumé.” – Roy H. Williams There. I've put 59 pages into a single sentence. Perhaps I should become an ad writer. Roy H. Williams 1 If no rascals are available, you can substitute a rebel, a rogue, or a renegade. 2 Hegde, Deepak and Tumlinson, Justin, Asymmetric Information and Entrepreneurship (May 15, 2017). https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2596846 (Available for download at SSRN.)

In the pre-interview introduction to this episode, Mark shares a few updates that include: How T S Paul (from Episode 13) ended up doing on Kobo in March as well as his continued growth (well ahead of the normal slow curve for sales growth on Kobo) His training (or lack thereof) for the end of April Waterloo half-marathon His rediscovery of the love of writing short fiction (and the #FreeFridayFrights he launches this week) A thank you to the latest Patreon supporters of the podcast This week's Terrible Tongue Twister, AKA “Twisting by the Fool” – this time done in the voice of the guard from the French castle, as played by John Cleese, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail In their chat, Mark and Kevin talk about: The fact that Kevin was always a writer and how Kevin wrote his very first “book” when he was five years old The early dictation that Kevin did with a cassette tape recorder when he was a child (dictating his own versions of the Encyclopedia Brown mysteries) His introduction to reporting and journalism in high school and his first professional earnings as a writer ($10 per column) The “nice advance” with a “terrible contract” that Kevin signed early in his writing career and then made the tough decision to leave, and pay back that advance The Vimeo and YouTube web series Kevin and a few friends had planned, and how that story turned into a novel Kevin's move from writing science fiction and into thrillers and how that led to his best-selling and award-winning novel Kevin's goal to get 12 books in total written in the Dan Kotler series by the end of 2018 The pattern of alternating between writing novels and short stories that Kevin is considering The basic minimum daily word count goal that Kevin sets for himself. (It is currently 2500 words) How, regardless of what's on his plate or calendar, that the writing for Kevin comes first. (As in, the very first thing that he does in the morning) Stephen King's quote about Art or Writing being a support system for life (and not the other way around) The genesis and desire behind Kevin's creation of the Wordslinger Podcast How inspiration for writing and creativity can come from any source, or virtually any conversation, not just from authors and writers A bit of a background on Draft2Digital and Kevin's role as Director of Marketing at this author-centric company How the “caring about the author” was something that always stood out the most when Kevin was initially looking at Draft2Digital as an author himself How working at Draft2Digital has opened a lot of additional doors for Kevin The automated in-matter and the amazing Book2Read offering that Draft2Digital provides to authors, book bloggers or anybody who wants to create a universal book link that connects to everywhere the ebook is sold online (including the ability to add affiliate codes for Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, etc into those links) The newly launched Author Pages that Draft2Digital has recently released, which connects back to the Books2Read content   After the interview, Mark reflects on something that Kevin mentioned, which was PLAN vs PROCESS, and the importance of having a flexible process. Mark spends some time thinking about how focusing on the process rather than the initially failed plan has benefited him in multiple ways in his personal life as well as his recent attempt to evolve into a full-time writer. Mark spoke openly about the process of transitioning in more personal detail on Episode 77 of the Inner Dominatrix Podcast, with host Dana Pharant back in December of 2017 (while he was in the midst of the latest transition in his life) Mark also shares that he was recently a guest on Patricia McLinn's new AUTHORS LOVE READERS podcast, where he and Pat had a fun time talking about the story behind the story of writing, where inspiration is found and other reader-centric questions about the writing life.   Links of Interest Kevin Tumlinson's website Wordslinger Podcast Draft2Digital.com D2D Blog Sample Author Pages from D2D Mark Leslie Kevin Tumlinson Authors Love Reader Podcast: Finding Inspiration in Everything We Experience, with Mark Leslie Inner Dominatrix Podcast: Mark Leslie: Transition Time Can be Fun Findaway Voices Stark Reflections Patreon Page Free Friday Frights
