Dreaming of space is something many of us have done as kids, but as we grow up, we start to learn that there are only a few seats in every cabin, and not everyone is well represented in that group. Kim Macharia is the Executive Director of the Space Prize Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the Space Frontier Foundation. And it's Kim's personal mission to make it easier for women and people of color to work in the field. In this episode, we talk about how a space camp jacket and a screenplay led to the start of Kim's galactic career journey and how her work inside two nonprofits is helping send more people into space. Before any world-changing innovation, there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. JUMP STRAIGHT INTO: (01:28) - The screenplay that got Kim interested in space democratization - “I met a few startup founders, a few folks from NASA, a really solid variety of people and I just simply began telling people my story and what I hope to accomplish in the industry.” (09:21) - How the Space Frontier Foundation is engaging with underrepresented groups - “We realize that we've been keeping women and other underrepresented groups out of this field for too long and we're stifling innovation because of it.” (16:49) - Making women the stars: Kim's role inside Space Prize - “We're https://www.spaceprize.org/global (launching a global contest this summer where two young deserving women will get the chance to go to the edge of space), via https://spaceperspective.com/ (Space Perspective), which is like a capsule that sends you to space.” (21:13) - Kim shares success stories from Space Prize programs - “We actually had the opportunity through a partnership with https://www.thefemalequotient.com/ (The Female Quotient )and we had all 24 of our finalists featured on a billboard in Times Square for a week.” (24:05) - Diversity and the impact of space innovation - “This is an industry that's growing and you can come in here and learn. It's okay to make mistakes. It's okay to be challenged. This is a challenging field, but if you're determined enough, you can make a place for yourself.” EPISODE RESOURCES: Connect with Kim on https://www.linkedin.com/in/kim-macharia-459266aa/ (LinkedIn), https://twitter.com/galactic_kim (Twitter) and https://www.instagram.com/galactic_kim/?hl=en (Instagram) Learn more about the https://newspace.spacefrontier.org/ (Space Frontier Foundation) & the https://www.spaceprize.org/ (Space Prize) Thank you for listening! Humans have a propensity to think in absolutes. For instance, fire the team member or keep them? Get divorced or have a baby? Consider this, the profound and innovative technologies tend not to be either or, but rather AND based instead. Who can we look too? Who can teach us an AND way of thinking, particularly when confronting the really big questions, the really big problems we face? You may love or hate people like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, or Jeff Bezos, but as a leader, you likely do want to know what drives them to extraordinary heights? One thing is certain, these individuals tend to be solution-based not in an either-or but very much in an AND way. So, let me ask you, do you know what or who got someone like Jeff Bezos to even think about big problems, particularly in an AND way? The answer may surprise you. It is a man who very few people today would even recognize the name of, a man who our guest today has made a fascinating movie about. The gentleman I'm referring to has inspired everyone from Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk to Star Trek creator, Gene Rodenberry. A man who, when you watch this movie, ‘The High Frontier,' may change your entire understanding of the possibilities and value of the new space race. On the heels of a summer of billionaire space flights and William Shatner's recent rocket trip, some Americans are echoing old arguments about the wastefulness of space exploration. In today's episode of "Political Economy," John Logsdon discusses NASA's history since the Moon landing, billionaires in space, and the path forward for continued exploration. John is the founder and Professor Emeritus of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. He is the author of several books on the space program, including, most recently, https://www.amazon.com/Frontier-Palgrave-Studies-History-Technology/dp/3319989618/ (Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier).

Music by man and his machines in this episode of Freaks like us (1970s -1980s) and sampling for off world colonies : Future music for space exploration is the one that made its home over the early 1960's. This is one reason why I decided to take a look at the new songs that came out of NASA's Cassini spacecraft earlier this fall. This is the story of an interstellar civilization that has been looking for a planet far from the solar system and now it's up against the likes of Jupiter and Saturn. I'm currently in Japan for the ISS Festival while preparing the latest release Cosmic Voyage: The End of the Space Frontier. This story first ran in May 2015 in SPACE HOLDERS ! I'm now writing it for SPACE HOLDERS! I've tried every instrument that can be used on this journey to try to see these alien planets, and you could see them pretty damn well while the probes have made their way. You can see an image of this planet below, then let's see exactly where it's situated, first the rocky rim of Saturn's moons, then back to the moons of the moon rings, and most recently back to the space-travellers. And this isn't just the end of the story of Earth and Mars. It's just the beginning and, as we've seen from the Voyager 3 probe, this one is just as important. It's also the beginning of the end in terms of the future. And last but not least, it's the first time that I've seen any such aliens, and I believe that. I don't know if there are any music, but one might have heard of the The Song of the Wolf songs and wondered if I'd have found that kind of song if I'd sat and listened to them all. I don't know. Maybe it was at the end of last record as the song's theme is about Mars and Earth? Or some old timey theme on a The Music of Space ? I don't know! After reading these blogs over the past couple of weeks (some of which I am not allowed to see here), you guys had this to say about this theme and how he got it: "It's the theme of the film, the theme of the music - the theme of the ship, the theme of the people going down to Mars, the theme of the people going back to Earth and back down to earth to get back in space to get back on their ship. It's a theme inspired by the theme from Space Invaders (which you guys all know is from DragonFly! ). They used a couple of references to these movies that the people are going to look down on when they go to Mars, and then just to remind them of the space they are on...It just happened in some places and they didn't want to do that. They didn't want to make a sequel
In today's episode, we're talking with Ethan Batraski, Partner at Venrock, in Palo Alto, California. Ethan invests across sectors with a particular focus on hard engineering problems, such as development infrastructure, advanced computing, and space technologies. We're going to dive into our shared investment in Astronomer and why they invested as well as the Space Frontier and how communication will change and new cases will start to emerge that we're not even thinking about today.

At 4:33 this afternoon, if the weather and all systems are go, a SpaceX-built Falcon 9 rocket, carrying two NASA astronauts in a crew capsule called “Dragon," will lift off from Launchpad 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and soar toward a rendezvous with the International Space Station. The mission, dubbed "Demo 2," will be the first time a privately-built rocket will carry humans into space from US soil, and the first US-built manned spacecraft in a decade. NASA Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken, both veterans of multiple missions aboard the now-retired Shuttle Orbiters, will dock the CrewDragon with the International Space Station and remain aboard the ISS for at least several weeks. What will this launch mean for NASA’s bid to send humans back to the Moon by 2024 and to Mars in the coming years, and for the future of commercial space exploration? Tom's first guest is reporter Mike Wall. He has covered the space program for Space.com since 2010, and he's is the author of Out There, a 2018 book about the search for alien life. He joins us via Skype from his home in San Francisco. Then, we get some historical perspectives on the SpaceX launch from esteemed space policy analyst, John M. Logsdon. He’s a Professor Emeritus of political science at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. In 1987, he founded the Elliott School's Space Policy Institute. Professor Logsdon is also a former member of the NASA Advisory Council and its Exploration Committee. He is the award-winning author of three books about politics and the space program: John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon (2010); After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program (2015); and Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier (2019). He has also edited the recently published The Penguin Book of Outer Space Exploration (2018), a collection of original documents tracing the evolution of the U.S. space effort. John Logsdon joins Tom via Skype from his home in Washington, D.C.

When Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, limits on NASA funding and the lack of direction under the Nixon and Carter administrations had left the U.S. space program at a crossroads. In contrast to his predecessors, Reagan saw outer space as humanity’s final frontier and as an opportunity for global leadership. His optimism and belief in American exceptionalism guided a decade of U.S. activities in space, including bringing the space shuttle into operation, dealing with the 1986 Challenger accident and its aftermath, committing to a permanently crewed space station, encouraging private sector space efforts, and fostering international space partnerships with both U.S. allies and with the Soviet Union.Drawing from a trove of declassified primary source materials and oral history interviews, John M. Logsdon provides the first comprehensive account of Reagan’s civilian and commercial space policies during his eight years in the White House. Even as a fiscal conservative who was hesitant to increase NASA’s budget, Reagan’s enthusiasm for the space program made him perhaps the most pro-space president in American history.John Logsdon is a world-renowned historian and analyst of space issues. He is the author of John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon and After Apollo? Richard Nixon and the American Space Program, both award-winning, definitive accounts of presidential space policy, and his most recent book is Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier. Professor Logsdon is Professor Emeritus at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and founder of its Space Policy Institute. Historian John Logsdon discusses his new book, Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier. It explores the legacy of the 40th president’s major space policy decisions. We look at four major topics: early efforts at commercializing space, the survival crisis for planetary exploration, the Space Shuttle, and the decision to build the space station. Casey also shares good news about NASA's newest budget and how a battle between rocket companies could spell trouble for NASA's Lucy mission. David Parker gave the Society early insight into ESA’s vision for human spaceflight and robotic exploration beyond 2019, going forward to the Moon and on to Mars and aimed at securing Europe's central role in the new era of global space exploration, in which ESA plans to work with existing partners, such as the USA, with new partners such as China, as well as engaging with commercial players. ESA’s vision and the associated programmatic elements are to be presented for approval at the next ESA Ministerial Council meeting to be held in November 2019.

In this episode I talk to Dr James Schwartz. James teaches philosophy at Wichita State University. His primary area of research is philosophy and ethics of space exploration, where he defends a position according to which space exploration derives its value primarily from the importance of the scientific study of the Solar System. He is editor (with Tony Milligan) of The Ethics of Space Exploration (Springer 2016) and his publications have appeared in Advances in Space Research, Space Policy, Acta Astronautica, Astropolitics, Environmental Ethics, Ethics & the Environment, and Philosophia Mathematica. He has also contributed chapters to The Meaning of Liberty Beyond Earth, Human Governance Beyond Earth, Dissent, Revolution and Liberty Beyond Earth (each edited by Charles Cockell), and to Yearbook on Space Policy 2015. He is currently working on a book project, The Value of Space Science. We talk about all things space-related, including the scientific case for space exploration and the myths that befuddle space advocacy. You can download the episode here or listen below. Thursday, January 28, 2016. Thirty years ago today, the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch, killing the seven astronauts aboard. I talk about my own memory of that day, the impressions the relentless news coverage left on me, and discuss the lessons of the accident. Whether those lessons were lasting, I fear is open to question. For a very thoughtful commentary about the Challenger disaster and the effect it has had on NASA (along with the Apollo 1 disaster before and the Columbia disaster after it), I highly recommend the following from NBC News space analyst James Oberg: NASA has to fight the forgetting The music for today's show is "Space Frontier," by Morwic, used with most kind permission.
