The singer-songwriter Natasha Khan, known by her stage name Bat for Lashes, joins Anita to talk about her new album, The Dream of Delphi. Named after her daughter Delphi, her new music explores motherhood through lush orchestral sounds. She discusses having a baby during the Covid lockdown and how the experience informed her song-writing. Vengeance is award-winning journalist and writer Saima Mir's second novel, and the sequel to her crime thriller debut The Khan. The book continues the story of Jia Khan as she's fighting to keep her position at the head of a crime syndicate her father created, and as the mysterious corpses of men begin to appear around the city. Saima joins Anita in the studio to discuss writing a British Asian crime family, creating the characters she wants to read, and why sisterhood is at the heart of her new novel. The mother of a 16 year-old-boy who ended his life after becoming the victim of a sextortion gang says the tech giant Meta has taken too long to hand over data which might help the investigation into his death. Joe Tidy, the BBC's first Cyber Correspondent, explains how he's been investigating Sextortion – a type of online blackmail which involves threatening to share intimate pictures of the victim. Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Allied troops landed on beaches across Normandy, marking the start of the campaign to liberate Nazi-occupied northern Europe. What's often forgotten is the important role that women played in organising this huge military project and making the D-Day happen. Anita Rani speaks to historian, teacher and writer Shalina Patel, who has told some of these women's stories in her book The History Lessons, which celebrates stories and people beyond the usual narratives.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Olivia Skinner

Our guest this week is Georgia Day (Of Sand and Bone, Rhapsody Press, November 2022). Hear how a recurring nightmare, complete with a haunting, portentous image, led Georgia to the story that would eventually morph into her speculative fiction novel. Set in a unique world of undulating sand and daily life-and-death struggles, her two female protagonists set out on a journey and Georgia went on her own journey as well, creating a world where everything from the environment to the origin stories and myths to the animals that share the space had to come  from her own imagination.  into a lyrical yet unsettling dystopia. Her reading from this lyrical yet unsettling dystopia half-way through the interview will enchant you as will her future goal of growing Rhapsody Press as a joint co-op venture with her father, a fellow writer. Georgia Day holds a B.A. in Literary Studies from the University of Texas at Dallas and has dreamed of being a writer her entire life. She is an avid reader, movie buff, and travel enthusiast. I am no longer waiting for a special occasion; I burn the best candles on ordinary days. I am no longer waiting for everyone to understand me; It's just not their task I am no longer waiting for the perfect children; my children have their own names that burn as brightly as any star. I am no longer waiting for the other shoe to drop; It already did, and I survived. I am no longer waiting for the time to be right; the time is always now. I am no longer waiting for the mate who will complete me; I am grateful to be so warmly, tenderly held. I am no longer waiting for a quiet moment; my heart can be stilled whenever it is called. I am no longer waiting for the world to be at peace; I unclench my grasp and breathe peace in and out. I am no longer waiting to do something great; being awake to carry my grain of sand is enough. I am no longer waiting to be recognized; I know that I dance in a holy circle. I am no longer waiting for Forgiveness. I believe, I Believe. TITAN’S DAY returns us to the city of Titanshade, our police investigator protagonist Carter, and his two-mouthed, mandibled partner, Ajax. Their discoveries in the first novel have changed the fate and fortunes of their dirty, cold and crime-ridden city — whether for good or ill, who yet can say? But bodies are still showing up in alleyways, so Carter and Ajax are back on the streets — and back in the thick of inter-department politics and inner city crime syndicate conflict. The detectives race to save innocent lives as the boom-town tips towards anarchy, and all-out war threatens the lives of human — and otherwise-humanoid citizens — during the city’s biggest celebration of the year: Titan’s Day. In the fourteenth episode of the Mindfulness & Grief Podcast, I interview Jan Warner, author of Grief Day by Day: Simple Practices and Daily Guidance for Living With Loss. During this episode, Jan shares how her deep love for her husband Artie lives on, how to deal with people who just don't understand, and how Grief Day by Day can help you become your own "grief whisperer." What I love about this interview with Jan is her honest and unfiltered view of life after loss that balances the reality of the pain of loss with the love and levity that helps you continue to live on - with their memory right by your side. The book itself is a fantastic resource - easy to read and offered in small, daily bites that will help you take the next best step for you. About Jan Warner When my husband died I thought I would sadly miss him. Instead I was devastated. After the first chaotic year I began to rebuild my life by honoring him. I became available to grieving people the way he, as a recovering alcoholic, was available to alcoholics and addicts. I wrote a blog. Five years ago, I started a FB page, Grief Speaks Out at www.Facebook.com/GriefSpeaksOut. It is a loving, supportive international community of 2.4 million people. My book, Grief Day By Day: Simple Practices and Daily Guidance for Living With Loss has been called a soothing balm for a wound and an outstretched hand in friendship.  I have a Master's in Counseling Degree and have studied NLP, and hypnotherapy. In becoming fully alive with grief I have produced documentary films and an off-Broadway play. I'm a vagabond who has been to all seven continents. I love being a grandmother.

In the pre-interview introduction to this episode, Mark shares a few updates that include: How T S Paul (from Episode 13) ended up doing on Kobo in March as well as his continued growth (well ahead of the normal slow curve for sales growth on Kobo) His training (or lack thereof) for the end of April Waterloo half-marathon His rediscovery of the love of writing short fiction (and the #FreeFridayFrights he launches this week) A thank you to the latest Patreon supporters of the podcast This week's Terrible Tongue Twister, AKA “Twisting by the Fool” – this time done in the voice of the guard from the French castle, as played by John Cleese, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail In their chat, Mark and Kevin talk about: The fact that Kevin was always a writer and how Kevin wrote his very first “book” when he was five years old The early dictation that Kevin did with a cassette tape recorder when he was a child (dictating his own versions of the Encyclopedia Brown mysteries) His introduction to reporting and journalism in high school and his first professional earnings as a writer ($10 per column) The “nice advance” with a “terrible contract” that Kevin signed early in his writing career and then made the tough decision to leave, and pay back that advance The Vimeo and YouTube web series Kevin and a few friends had planned, and how that story turned into a novel Kevin's move from writing science fiction and into thrillers and how that led to his best-selling and award-winning novel Kevin's goal to get 12 books in total written in the Dan Kotler series by the end of 2018 The pattern of alternating between writing novels and short stories that Kevin is considering The basic minimum daily word count goal that Kevin sets for himself. (It is currently 2500 words) How, regardless of what's on his plate or calendar, that the writing for Kevin comes first. (As in, the very first thing that he does in the morning) Stephen King's quote about Art or Writing being a support system for life (and not the other way around) The genesis and desire behind Kevin's creation of the Wordslinger Podcast How inspiration for writing and creativity can come from any source, or virtually any conversation, not just from authors and writers A bit of a background on Draft2Digital and Kevin's role as Director of Marketing at this author-centric company How the “caring about the author” was something that always stood out the most when Kevin was initially looking at Draft2Digital as an author himself How working at Draft2Digital has opened a lot of additional doors for Kevin The automated in-matter and the amazing Book2Read offering that Draft2Digital provides to authors, book bloggers or anybody who wants to create a universal book link that connects to everywhere the ebook is sold online (including the ability to add affiliate codes for Amazon, Kobo, Smashwords, etc into those links) The newly launched Author Pages that Draft2Digital has recently released, which connects back to the Books2Read content   After the interview, Mark reflects on something that Kevin mentioned, which was PLAN vs PROCESS, and the importance of having a flexible process. Mark spends some time thinking about how focusing on the process rather than the initially failed plan has benefited him in multiple ways in his personal life as well as his recent attempt to evolve into a full-time writer. Mark spoke openly about the process of transitioning in more personal detail on Episode 77 of the Inner Dominatrix Podcast, with host Dana Pharant back in December of 2017 (while he was in the midst of the latest transition in his life) Mark also shares that he was recently a guest on Patricia McLinn's new AUTHORS LOVE READERS podcast, where he and Pat had a fun time talking about the story behind the story of writing, where inspiration is found and other reader-centric questions about the writing life.   Links of Interest Kevin Tumlinson's website Wordslinger Podcast Draft2Digital.com D2D Blog Sample Author Pages from D2D Mark Leslie Kevin Tumlinson Authors Love Reader Podcast: Finding Inspiration in Everything We Experience, with Mark Leslie Inner Dominatrix Podcast: Mark Leslie: Transition Time Can be Fun Findaway Voices Stark Reflections Patreon Page Free Friday Frights

So nyah-nyah. But as of this week, I’ve launched Wordslinger Press. This will be the non-fiction arm of my publishing business, focusing primarily on creating content oriented toward the indie publishing community. You may already be aware of one of my other non-fiction books, 30-Day Author. This week I released a second Wordslinger book titled Writing A Better Book Description. This is a short, quick read—around 40 pages for $1.99, and available as an ebook everywhere you can think to buy one. This is the first in a series of quick guides meant to give authors and publishers a place to start when trying to figure out the mechanics of this business. Look for more of these in the near future. Some authors are getting a little extra surprise with with their tax forms, though. Patrick Reames got a 1099 indicating that he’d made nearly $24,000 from book sales on CreateSpace. This seemed unlikely, as Reames did not have any books published through Amazon’s POD service. Upon checking into it, he discovered that someone had used his identity to create an account and sell a book titled “Lower Days Ahead” for $555 per copy. Reames and others aren’t entirely sure what’s up, but one theory is that someone is using CreateSpace to launder pilfered credit cards, buying copies of the paperback and having Amazon deposit 60% of the sale into a bank account. If true, this represents a huge and scary problem for both Amazon and indie authors. But it’s the kind of cool plot twist one might turn into a thriller novel. While in India, Nourry was interviewed by Scroll.in, and was pretty open about his disdain of the entire eBook market. “The ebook is a stupid product. It is exactly the same as print, except it’s electronic,” Nourry said. “There is no creativity, no enhancement, no real digital experience.” Nourry did admit that it was the entire industry that had not done a good job with eBooks … big of him. Frankly, the CEO’s comments highlight the fact that he and the rest of the traditional publishing industry seem to be utterly clueless about the impact of ebooks. That’s my opinion of course. Episode 5 Kevin Tumlinson needs no introduction in the Indie publishing world – or in the podcasting world for that matter – and there’s a growing interest in his transition amongst his followers, including me, to full-time RVing. Kevin and his wife, Kara, will be travelling in style and for a while in this interview I forget about writing as I get lost in the detail of his new lifestyle. But, never fear, Kevin is as ever generous in his writing advice as he is in sharing the excitement of his new lifestyle. This man writes 5000 words a day, which to me, makes Kevin one prolific writer. I can’t wait to see how he maintains the schedule when life outside his rig proves too tempting. He has visions of sitting inside at his already designated writing desk as he churns out his words. Good luck, Kevin, there’s a big wide world of distraction out there waiting to tempt you. For more about Kevin’s writing and writing journey, visit http://www.kevintumlinson.com (www.kevintumlinson.com). His latest adventure thriller novel, The Coehlo Medallion is available in all the usual places and his non-fiction book, The 30 Day Author, has become this wanna-be-prolific-author-when-I-grow-up’s bible of sorts. Read Full Transcript Kevin Tumlinson Duration: [01:05:49] Melinda: Welcome to another episode of Writer on the Road. I have a very, very special guest with me today who I've been courting, I guess, for several months now. My guest is Kevin Tumlinson and to most of people in the podcasting world he's going to need absolutely no introduction whatsoever. Good morning Kevin! Kevin Tumlinson: Good morning, good afternoon. Let's see, I'm, I don't know how many hours opposite you that I am, but it's 3 o'clock here and 6 am there. So I guess, good afternoon here, good morning there. Melinda: There's another difference as well that I'm going to point out, my business is called Tropical Writing Services and I've just moved down from a tiny place called Magnetic Island off Townsville in far north Queensland and I'm down in Brisbane, which is still tropical, but it's 5 degrees here today. Kevin Tumlinson: Oh really? Melinda: And I'm not a happy writer. So I'm sitting here in UGG boots and coats and mittens with a cup of Milo in my hand and Kevin you're from Texas? Kevin Tumlinson: Yes. It is not 5 degrees here. It is very warm here right now. I believe it's somewhere in the high 90s right now and the humidity is killing me. Melinda: I think there was something, I think one of the times I contacted you, you were quite happy to be in the air conditioning and it was 30 degrees and very sweaty outside. Kevin Tumlinson: Right, right, exactly. That's what happens when you're in the general Houston area, that's one of the reasons why my wife and I were keen to get in the RV and get on the road full time so that we can choose comfortable places to live. Melinda: There's a mass exodus north as we speak this time of year, anyone who has any sense of all is in their RV and heading north, the tried and true track is you go up through Brisbane up north to Townsville, Cairns, Daintree, and across to Darwin where it's very comfortable, thank you very much, and that's where you stay for the winter. I'm assuming when you travel that big wide country of yours that you will have plenty of choices. Kevin Tumlinson: We do. One interesting thing is the way the mountains actually sort of dissect the country at one point, so there's kind of a definitive east and west here and then once you go a little further west there's a big huge dessert. So we haven't really ventured beyond the mountains yet, but we do like to get up north into the mountains and kind of find a relaxing place. I'm a mountains guy, I'd much rather be in the mountains than say on a beach or in the tropics or something like that and I'm really looking forward to spending months at a time on a lake or somewhere where I've got a, sort of a vista that I...

Author Gwen Cooper joins host Robin Milling to talk about her new novel, Love Saves The Day which is the story of bridging the gap and cementing the bonds of unconditional love between a mother and daughter, told through the voice of a brown tabby cat they rescue named Prudence. Even if you're not a cat lover, you will relate to this story of how animals can ultimately rescue their humans, which Prudence firmly believes she has done.  Gwen who says she is an equal opportunity animal lover has three cats of her own, all of them adopted or rescued. She tells Robin the feline heroine in the book is based on her cat Scarlett who made her debut in her bestselling memoir Homer's Odyssey, about her blind cat Homer who became a celebrity in his own right especially amongst the rescue community who rallied to the book.  What is most rewarding for Gwen is how Homer's Odyssey inspired many more adoptions of blind, deaf and special needs pets, namely the Blind Cat Rescue and Sanctuary in North Carolina who have seen a spike in support since the book was published. She hopes Love Saves The Day has a similar impact, embarking on a tour across the country to 15 no-kill shelters whose outreach in their communities benefit the elderly, the homeless and at risk children. Gwen says the temptation to adopt another cat while she's there will be great but realizes living in a New York apartment; three is the charm!
