This week, we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Mark Mandell of Mandell, Boisclair & Mandell, Ltd (https://www.mbmjustice.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Acclaimed trial lawyer Mark Mandell of Mandell, Boisclair & Mandell, Ltd. explains how he successfully advocated for Alissa Moulton, who was ejected from her boyfriend Alexander Arango's car after he lost control while driving under the influence, leaving her paralyzed. In April 2010, Alexander, who was only 18 years-old at the time, became highly intoxicated after he was illegally served alcoholic drinks at Twin River Casino and Royal Liquors store in Rhode Island. While under the influence, Alexander drove his mother's 1997 Toyota Camry and lost control of the passenger-filled vehicle as it struck a median barrier, crossed two highway lanes, rolled onto its roof and hit a tree, ejecting Alissa and another passenger. Today, Alissa is paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair. Despite the defense's attempts to poke holes in the established timeline of events and to question whether Alexander was served drinks at the casino, a Providence, Rhode Island jury found in favor of the plaintiff Alissa, returning a total judgment of $21,270,455.69 in November 2016. The ongoing outbreak of the coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China. Since the first of the year, one of the hardest hit industries in Asia is land-based casino gambling. The Macao region of China tops the list as the biggest attraction. Visitation to the Macau casinos is down around 70 percent in conjunction with the Lunar New Year holiday. At the same time, it was reported that online gambling was up 90 percent during this time frame. Online gambling sites are illegal in China, but legal in the Philippines. Traffic to illegal online casinos in Asia have also experienced increased traffic.Next, A Lucky California Gambler Wins Big at Las Vegas AirportA recent visit to Las Vegas resulted in nearly $12,000 in prize winnings. Identified only as Ulla T., the Roseville, California resident accumulated $11,761 in winnings playing a penny slot machine. What made headlines was the fact that she was playing the machine in Concourse A of McCarran International Airport. Slot machines fill all the terminals at the Las Vegas airport to give travelers one last chance to hit it big. You can also play the machines when arriving in town to get the early jump on hitting it big. The winning machine was “Smokin’ Hot Stuff Wicked Wheel.”In the next story, A Las Vegas Casino Tests New Weapon Detection TechnologyIn light of the deadliest mass shooting in US history, heightened security in Las Vegas has become a high priority. A highly successful security technology company is tackling the problem in a stealthy fashion. Patriot One unveiled its weapon-spotting technology at a recent Las Vegas trade show and one casino has taken interest. Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino has been testing the system at their place of business. The main attraction is the discreet nature of the detection machines. Relying on a series of hidden sensors, all forms of weapons can be detected as patrons walk through an invisible barrier.Lastly, IGT and Twin River Seek to Resolve an Ongoing Dispute With a Business PartnershipInternational Game Technology is one of the largest casino games manufacturer in the world. Twin River owns and operated the Lincoln Casino in Rhode Island. The two sides have been feuding over the state’s current and future gaming machine contract. In an effort to solve the dispute, an agreement to operate a joint company has been proposed. IGT would own 60 percent of the new company’s stock. Twin River would control the remaining 40 percent. As part of the deal, the new company would spend more than $100 million renovating and expanding Lincoln Casino. State approval of the deal is pending.

Rhode Island’s political leaders have been ensnared in a bitter joust between two gambling companies that provide several thousand jobs and millions in state revenue. Gov. Gina Raimondo has sided with IGT, which provides technology and machines to the state’s casinos, over Twin River, which operates the state’s two casinos. While this battle consumes the Statehouse and generates headlines, The Public’s Radio political analyst Scott MacKay ponders a bigger issue: Is the billion-dollar gambling industry reaching a saturation point in New England and other northeastern states?
