Accused Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann faces new charges after DNA evidence linked him to the notorious "Gilgo Beach Four" murders. In an indictment unsealed in Suffolk County court, Heuermann, 60, was charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, one of the victims whose remains were discovered along the Sound Shore in 2010. These murders had remained unsolved for 13 years. The breakthrough in the case came as investigators connected Brainard-Barnes' murder to Heuermann through DNA evidence. Specifically, a female hair found on the victim's body was matched to samples collected from Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup, and their 26-year-old daughter, Victoria. Remarkably, both women were out of town when all four of the murders took place, including the time of Brainard-Barnes' death in Atlantic City, as detailed in the indictment. Prosecutors revealed disturbing details about Heuermann's alleged activities. He reportedly texted escorts while his wife and children were away, engaging in sick online searches such as "Very skinny white teen tied up porn," "tied up fat girl porn," "medieval torture of women," and "how I was raped audio." Investigators also discovered a collection of violent, bondage, and torture pornography on Heuermann's electronic devices. Furthermore, they found that he had used his computer to contact escorts, using the names "Andy" or "Andrew," which correspond to his middle name. One of the escorts allegedly received a text message from Heuermann on March 1, 2020, stating, "Hi, I saw your ad and wanted to see if we could set something up later." This chilling exchange occurred as the escort asked if the following day would work, to which Heuermann responded, "I am working all day. I was free today; my wife is out for the day… working Monday." While Rex Heuermann pleaded not guilty to these new charges, his wife, Asa Ellerup, and daughter, Victoria Heuermann, were present at the arraignment but did not address reporters. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney had previously identified Rex Heuermann as the primary suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes. He had expressed that his office was close to linking Heuermann to her case. Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, was the first of the "Gilgo Four" to disappear on July 9, 2007. Her body was later discovered on December 13, 2010, and she was reportedly bound with a belt stamped with the initials "WH," which investigators have suggested may have belonged to Heuermann's late grandfather, William Heuermann. The "Gilgo Four" case involved the discovery of more than ten sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway between December 2010 and April 2011. Three other victims who worked as escorts, Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, and Megan Waterman, became known as the "Gilgo Four." Maureen Brainard-Barnes had a life prior to her tragic disappearance. She was originally from Groton, Connecticut, and was described as a straight-A student who dropped out of school at 17 after becoming pregnant. She held various jobs, including working as a card dealer at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, at a local ShopRite, and at a gas station in the area. As this shocking case unfolds, investigators continue their efforts to seek justice for the victims and their families, as well as to provide answers in a case that has haunted Long Island for over a decade. Hodinkee Radio returns for the second installment of The Collector's Edition With Ben Clymer. Follow along with Hodinkee's founder as he speaks with notable friends and watch enthusiasts about what it means to be a collector. As you may recall, we launched the series last year with pop star Ed Sheeran. In this episode, we are thrilled to sit down with comedian, actor, producer, and serial entrepreneur Kevin Hart. If it seems like Hart is everywhere all the time, that's because he is – from the current "Reality Check" stand-up tour and the big screen in hits like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Secret Life of Pets to television ads for the likes of DraftKings and JPMorgan Chase. On top of that, he also runs a media company called HartBeat Productions. And on top of that – and what brings us here today – he's also a legit watch enthusiast. We caught up with Kevin at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, right before he was about to hit the stage for back-to-back "Reality Check" shows. We learned that his love of watches dates to the early days of his career and that over the years Submariners, Daytonas, Pateks, and Richard Milles adorned his wrist. Today, his collecting has evolved to the point where he has a partnership with Audemars Piguet. As a "friend of the brand," Kevin has access to some very special pieces, including the ceramic chronograph he famously leaked to the world and the piece he'll be wearing in the upcoming Netflix movie Lift.Show Notes: 0:27Kevin Hart0:30Ben Clymer0:56A stop on the "Reality Check" tour2:00Audemars Piguet4:57Rolex Submariner 166105:14Rolex Daytona 1165085:40Jacob the Jeweler6:25Richard Mille RM 0299:07Kevin's first Tourbillon: The Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Chronograph in Rose Gold 26223OR10:51Revealing the Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph "50th Anniversary" in Black Ceramic13:28Watch worn in the movie Lift14:05Chadwick Boseman and the AP x Marvel Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon17:58Royal Oak Openworked Extra-Thin "40th Anniversary" In Platinum18:46Kevin's car collection20:24Celebrity friends into collecting watches20:48Corey Gamble watch collection

Amine Ballafrikh was born in a small town near Rabat, the capital of Morocco. As the youngest of nine children, and with his father working in the U.S., he started working at seven years of age by selling plastic bags and sharpening knives in markets. He became a plasterer at the age of 14, which was also when he started training in Muay Thai. Up until that point, he says, he was always getting into street fights. He had his first amateur fight three months after starting training, and lost. The shocked young fighter was convinced he'd won his fight, and only after watching the video realized that he was not invincible and intensified his training regimen. He won his first national title at the age of 16, and four years later moved to Alexandria to live with his father. After working a number of odd jobs, and without speaking English, he moved to New York City for a few years and became a truck driver. Eventually, he moved back to the area and began training at Capital MMA. After work driving, he would often park his trailer behind the gym and his trainers would have to knock on his door in the morning. He'd emerge from the bed of his truck to start training for the day. Ballafrikh is now a full-time trainer at Capital MMA and lives a Spartan lifestyle fighting exclusively for Lion Fight Promotions LLC. He says that he can fight up to six times a year, and last year took his team to the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT, to win the North American Lightweight championship. What's new for the Alexandria fighter? He has to participate in a Superfight, and he has to fight a European fighter. “So, the fights are going to go overseas,” Ballafrikh said. “Where? We're not sure exactly. It's between Italy, Australia, and Sweden. I have to fight someone from Europe, and then I need to fight for a world belt.” The 27-year-old Ballafrikh is the two-time North American Lightweight Muay Thai champ! He has a professional record of 13-3 and an amateur record of 36-4. He trains at Capital MMA at 6301 Richmond Highway, is also known by another name – “The Lion,” because of his ferocity in the ring and his native country's connection to the majestic African king of the beasts. CBIA BizCast host Ali Warshavsky speaks with Foxwoods Resort Casino president and CEO Jason Guyot. Guyot, who began his career at Foxwoods as a bellhop in 1995, became interim president in April 2020 while the casino was closed during the pandemic. He was named president and CEO in March this year. “It wasn't like there was any one day where I said ‘hey, I want to be CEO of Foxwoods,'” said Guyot, the first member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe to lead the company. “I have been here for almost 20 years of my career and built my career here and had a lot of support through that. “Last year in 2020 when the council asked me to fill in in the interim role, I really jumped at the opportunity. I felt I was ready.” Foxwoods currently has about 3,000 employees, down from a pre-pandemic high of more than 5,000. Guyot said Foxwoods is using a variety of tactics to address the labor shortage, including hosting job fairs. Today Amy takes a peek behind the curtain to learn the trick of pivoting from “almost famous” magician to keynote speaker, coach and workshop presenter. You will enjoy hearing Brian Miller tell his very unusual career story. Brian comes from a family involved with music, math and science. Those influences brought him, at the end of high school, to a decision to study rock guitar at a very prestigious school. He was delighted when he was accepted there, but shortly thereafter he realized the money spent for that education might never be returned through a career in music. So as a 17 year-old, he made the sobering decision to enter a local college on a full scholarship as an audio engineering major. During his freshman year, the music industry nearly collapsed with the advent of Napster and uncontrolled file sharing. This brought Brian to reconsider his thoughts of continuing his major because a future in audio engineering was beginning to look bleak. He returned then his sophomore year with the intention of studying to be a math teacher. Although he thought this might be a good fit, it wasn't, and by the time he finished his last undergrad year, he had earned a dual degree in math and philosophy. What to do with this new degree? He decided to go directly for a Ph.D in philosophy. He applied and was accepted to the program he wanted. But Presto Chango! The would-be doctor of philosophy was now going to be a professional magician! What? Brian had always been interested in magic, and as a kid, he often performed in magic shows. He had continued performing in college and was often tapped to entertain for college events. It was a sideline interest and hobby that occasionally brought in some spending money. Listen to him explain to Amy how this major reversal on his career path took place. But how do you become a professional magician? Can someone really do that? Brian detailed his process. He had already developed a website and had business cards printed. He began working for very little as an entertainer in restaurants ad each time he performed at a table, he handed out one of his business cards. His earnings were hardly enough to live on, and he went through all his savings in no time. Luckily his college Director of Student Activities had taken an interest in him, having put him on stage for several events during his undergrad years. Through him, Brian was introduced to the owner of Neon Entertainment where he signed on. Little by little he began to be hired for more professional gigs. A second lucky break occurred when he was in the right place at the right time and was hired by Foxwoods Resort Casino, one of the 2 largest casinos in North America. He became their exclusive magician, and he hadn't been out of college a year yet. Over the following ten years, he became a better magician and “was about as successful as he could be without being famous.” But in 2015, his career took another turn. He had been performing at colleges and doing corporate events for some time, and this set him up for his transition from magician to public speaker. He began by giving a few speeches and incorporating a little of his magic in them. He was somewhat surprised to see how much audiences loved his blended performances. They lined up to thank him for his insightful presentations afterwards, and this was when the real magic happened. Brian realized he was having a different kind of impact than he had when he performed solely as a magician. He found this extremely gratifying, enough so that he pursued even more speaking engagements. At about this time, he was invited to give a TEDx talk. He was hoping the video might get at least 5000 hits so that he could justify raising his fees a bit. As it turned out, it received over 3.3 million views! Why was his speech so successful? Brian listened to the presentations of other magicians and realized they were discussing topics that were generally of real interest only to other magicians. He found himself thinking about what he could take from his magician's life to share with a general audience that would be of more consequence. What he arrived at was “perspective taking”. He explains to us what that is and what a valuable tool it can be for anyone if they learn how to use it properly. As a magician, he had intuitively used perspective taking all through his life and now he was ready to share his insight through his speaking engagements. Thus, was born his speech, “How to Magically Connect with Anyone”. This speech explains the power of perspective taking and how it can help anyone who cares to use it. His talks were so well received that at this point he became fully involved with public speaking. But as his popularity grew, he began to feel inadequately prepared. How could he be an “expert” without having done any formal research or learning? He decided to remedy the situation by delving into the psychology behind what he was delivering in his presentations. He explored every avenue he could think of to gather data and proof of his assertions. After a year or two immersing himself in the topic, he felt more qualified to speak authoritatively about “human connection”. His speaking engagements gradually then became his mainstay, dedicated to promoting the benefits of perspective taking to make meaningful human connections. What advice does he have to share from his unusual career? He says don't worry if you don't know what your passion is. You will find it by putting yourself out there. Meet new people, try new things. Take risks. Step out of the box. Yes, hard work, talent and persistence are vital, but a measure of luck is also involved. Open yourself up to opportunity. Who knows what's in the cards for you? Takeaways: Risk taking is often rewarding but may also involve a lot of work People skills can be improved and in turn can improve your life Staying positive helps you to find and focus on the good in seemingly bad situations Allow yourself to step outside the box Networking is a skill that puts you at great advantage, so it pays to learn to network well Prepare in school as best you can for the road you think you'll take, but don't be afraid to take a detour, as it may be the better road Contact: softskillsarehard.com Podcast-Beyondnetworkingpodcast.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/bmillermagic/
