In this episode of Cutting Deep Into Horror, we dive into the intricacies and terrors of the 2014 film "Last Shift," directed by Anthony de Blasi. Co-hosts Henrique and Rachael unpack the story of Officer Loren, a rookie cop assigned to her first shift at an abandoned police station as it prepares to close its doors for good. The discussion explores various horror tropes while delving into profound themes of family legacy, trauma, and the impact of the past on the present. We begin with introductions, setting the eerie tone and encouraging listeners to remain alert as we dissect the film's chilling narrative. Henrique recounts his experience watching the film for the first time, discussing its gradual build-up of tension and the heart-pounding scares that punctuate the silence. Rachael thoughtfully emphasizes the importance of acting and atmosphere in horror, sharing how Loren's relatable character helps ground us in the unfolding supernatural events. As the plot progresses, we examine key interactions between Loren and her commanding officer, Sergeant Cohen, who introduces a mix of gruffness and dark humor amidst the unsettling environment. The two discuss how the film establishes its eerie rules early on, highlighting how the unknown looms larger when untrusted elements fill the frame. The exploration of visual storytelling techniques reveals how these choices amplify the film's sense of dread. The hosts unpack pivotal moments in the film, including the discovery of supernatural phenomena and the haunting implications of the station's dark history tied to the Payman family—infamous for their murderous past. The discussions touch on the larger themes of legacy and expectation, particularly how Lauren grapples with her father's shadow as a former law enforcement officer. We analyze how the film unravels these elements, showcasing the psychological and emotional pressures on Lauren as she navigates a night filled with supernatural horrors.Henrique and Rachael highlight the film's minimalist approach, noting how budget constraints did not hinder its ability to instill fear. They examine the stark imagery of blood and ghostly apparitions, influenced by traditional horror filmmaking where restraint often results in a more profound impact. Each scare is dissected, showcasing the effectiveness of sound and silence in creating an immersive viewing experience. As our hosts reach the film's climax, they discuss Lauren's realization that the horrors she faces are intertwined with her family history, leading to a tragic and haunting conclusion. The conversation eventually turns to the implications of her journey and the film's commentary on facing one's fears—both seen and unseen. The episode wraps up with reflections on “Last Shift” as a masterclass in suspense and an exploration of how trauma shapes our lives.Listeners are advised to tune in for future episodes, with a promise of more chilling discussions during the spooky season. Next month, Rachael will introduce Henrique to "A Killing of a Sacred Deer," setting the stage for even more insightful critiques on horror cinema.Support Us and Get Bonus Shows on Patreon!Contact Us/Submit a Storytwitter.com/WeeklySpookyfacebook.com/WeeklySpookyWeeklySpooky@gmail.comMusic by Ray Mattis http://raymattispresents.bandcamp.comExecutive ProducersRob FieldsMark ShieldsBobbletopia.comProduced by Daniel WilderThis episode is sponsored by HenFlix.com

What goes bump in the night giving Kyle a fright? This week it's Last Shift (2014) directed by Anthony DiBlasi. This film throws a rookie cop into a haunted police station to contend with ghouls and cult members. Was this movie a bit of a cop out? Where did that exposition lady of the night come from? Is Kyle a momma's boy? Radio for backup as the Boo Boys break it all down.

Nothing quite says Have a Bad Day like being a rookie cop, and on your 1st day, you're tasked to be the only officer to secure and monitor an out-of-commission police station. If that wasn't crappy enough, let's up the ante by making it haunted by a cult that died at the station! Is this episode one of the Top Dawg Forever Midnight Society members picked the poison for the FM3. This time around that poison was the independent haunted cop shop movie "Last Shift" from 2014. This episode is a fun one chalk full of revealing moments, hot topics and even hotter takes. Apologies ahead of time - Trigger warnings include: Suicide, Police, boogers, Trump, Top Knot Buns, Charles Manson & Florida.
Chaney Morrow! My 75th guest on my shows! Clearly this man is a very talented actor and Oscar material. He stars as “Ghost” in one of my all-time favorite Halloween movies, “Haunt” (2019). So, what is the movie “Malum” all about? A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at newly decommissioned police station where members of a cult committed suicide years prior. However, she begins to experience supernatural occurrences throughout the night as she also uncovers the secret of her mother and father's history. Chaney Morrow acting as the cult leader, John Michal Malum – very charismatic and very talented. I really enjoyed this interview because I tapped into the one source that could tell me everything about this movie. Yes, it's a remake of the “Last Shift” but after comparing the two, “Malum” is by far much better with the supernatural aspect. With 200 times more the scares and cult affiliation, this by far is more accurate. Rather than focusing on one character throughout the entire movie, in “Malum” you have all the actors which turned out to be a brilliant ensemble who obviously had a lot of fun providing more of a story. But Chaney Morrow – tapping into my own soul with his words of wisdom in the interrogation scenes… That's something that will probably make you shit your pants, making you question yourself and your sanity. With the anticipation, the foreboding, the suspense, the makeup, the special effects, and especially with the women singing – this movie turned out to be a labyrinth of death and I could not ask for anything more. With his upcoming movies, make sure to follow this brilliant and talented actor on social media. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

If you're like us, you were probably surprised to find out that Anthony DiBlasi's Last Shift has less than 10 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Welcome to The Nick Taylor Horror Show! Today, we have a dynamic duo, Director Anthony DiBlasi, and his wife, actress Natalie Victoria, joining us. After graduating from Emerson College and moving to Los Angeles, Anthony became a protégé of Clive Barker and worked alongside him on films like Midnight Meat Train and 2009's Book of Blood. Anthony made his directorial debut with the psychological thriller Dread, based on a Clive Barker short story. One of Anthony's most acclaimed films was Last Shift, released by Magnolia Pictures in 2015. His filmography also includes the psychological thriller Extremity from 2018. Now let's talk about Anthony's Wife, Natalie Victoria. Beginning her career in theater, Natalie has earned awards and recognition for her acting and writing. Natalie has acted in various features, short films, and stage plays, including the comedy "Deadheads," and the cult classic horror film Last Shift. Natalie stars in Anthony's latest release Malum, which is actually a remake of Last Shift. The film follows a rookie police officer as she uncovers the eerie connection between her father's death and a vicious cult during her shift at a decommissioned police station. As the lone officer on duty, she finds herself in the midst of terrifying paranormal events while learning the shocking truth about her family's history with the cult. In our conversation today, we discuss the importance of building trust with actors, crafting horror based on personal fears, and Anthony's 10 years working with Clive Barker. Here for your listening pleasure are Natalie Victoria and Anthony DiBlasi. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Anthony DiBlasi. Make Hell a safe space. I've talked with people at length about how horror can be substantially more demanding on actors because it requires the most intense emotions. For this reason, horror directors need to take particularly great care of their actors. Anthony mentioned that it's essential for directors to shield their actors from on-set turmoil, especially time constraints. By ensuring your actors are cocooned from such pressures, even at the cost of other departments, you provide them with the environment necessary for a stellar performance. Forge an emotional connection to your actors. Anthony also stressed the significance of establishing genuine emotional connections with your actors. It's the director's job to uncover the emotional truth that resonates with the actor for each scene. Rather than rudely prying them for emotionally intimate details of their life, Anthony stated that he would often reveal intimate and vulnerable details about himself and how he related to a scene to enable them to open up. Art often requires vulnerability; if you want your actors to go to dark places, you have to be willing to go there first. Find out how your actors like to work. Further, Anthony and Natalie underlined the importance of understanding your actor's preferred way of working and direction style. Encourage them to share past directing experiences, both good and bad. Every actor is different, and tuning into their specific needs will mold you into a more versatile director. Create a repository When it came to the creation of Malum, Anthony revealed how various elements - dreams, sketches, vague concepts - had been incorporated into the film. Fortunately, his habit of consistently jotting down ideas, no matter how undeveloped, provided a wealth of material, or 'firewood' as David Lynch would say, all of which was at his disposal during the scriptwriting process. As a result, Anthony strongly encourages the use of note-taking apps (like Evernote and Notion), as they can be game changers. Amassing your thoughts over time can make facing that blank page far less daunting. Thank you for listening! Don't forget to subscribe. ----- Produced by Simpler Media

PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Anthony DiBlasi (DREAD, LAST SHIFT, MALUM) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope studio to discuss his career journey. From graduating Emerson College in Massachusetts and making the move out West to La La Land… to finding his place among the Los Angeles horror community working as both an executive and a producer for Clive Barker's Seraphim Films… to juicy stories about the making of MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN that you won't hear anywhere else… to his experiences directing his first feature film DREAD (2009)… to the challenge and triumph of reimagining his own film (2014's LAST SHIFT) with Anthony's latest feature MALUM (currently still in theaters but stalking a digital platform in your home soon!)… this wickedly candid discussion between 3 filmmakers and old friends is precisely the “fly on the wall” style of conversation that has made THE MOVIE CRYPT the industry's resource for film therapy over the last decade!
On this episode, I am joined by the creative duo Natalie Victoria and Anthony DiBlasi about their film Malum. We talk about how this movie developed after The Last Shift. https://twitter.com/NatalieVArtist https://twitter.com/ant_DiBlasi For more Beyond the Playlist https://twitter.com/JHammondC https://www.facebook.com/groups/Beyondtheplaylist/ Theme music by MFTJ Featuring MIke Keneally and Scott Schorr - to find more of MFTJ go to https://www.lazybones.com/ https://mftj.bandcamp.com/music http://www.keneally.com/ To support the show with patreon go to: https://www.patreon.com/jhammondc
Remakes and reimagining's get a bad rap. Though there have been many lousy ones (people still puzzle over Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake) there's also many that are now classics. John Carpenter's "The Thing", David Cronenberg's "The Fly", Philip Kaufman's "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", Gore Verbinski's "The Ring, William Malone's "House on Haunted Hill" and Zack Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead". All inspired takes on classic films. What makes these examples work whereas others (here's looking at you Elm street remake) feel like tired retreads? It seems like it has a lot to do with a filmmaker who has a new lens to see the story through. Carpenter didn't just rely on the special effects (though they sure are special) for his take of “The Thing”, Cronenberg wasn't content to just rely on a cooler looking fly, Kaufman knew it would take more than bigger body snatcher crowds. You get where we're going with this. There's a connection between the filmmaker and the material for all these films that's evident in the movies themselves. Our guest today can be added to the list of filmmakers whose reimagining works because there is a clear connection between the filmmaker and the world he's creating. PLOT TWIST… he's reimagining his own movie. In 2014, a film about a rookie cop's night at a soon-to-be-shuttered police station that becomes a descent into hell became a sleeper hit. The film was “Last Shift” and it has just been reimagined in the form of the new film “Malum” by its creator, our guest in this episode, writer/director Anthony DiBlasi. When I asked him about returning to the world he created with “Last Shift”, Anthony told me “I think the remakes that work are the ones that are really treated like reimaginings. They took the core of what was cool with the original and expanded on it. Almost as if it were a sequel to the original. What Aliens did for Alien. That's what we wanted to do with Malum. Explore what we couldn't in the first one because of resources, but also dive deeper into a mythology we barely touched on in the original. Build on the elements that work while also improving on the ones that didn't.” Anthony also delves into the years he worked closely with horror icon Clive Barker, how dealing with MPAA interference and studio meddling is basically trial by fire and adapting one of Barker's stories for his film “Dread”. Our talk with Anthony is a proper deep dive covering all his genre films so we will be dropping it in two parts. So remember, nothing is what it seems and the darkness is going to be staring right back at you while we explore the work of Anthony DiBlasi. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Nothing quite says Have a Bad Day like being a rookie cop, and on your 1st day, you're tasked to be the only officer to secure and monitor an out-of-commission police station. If that wasn't crappy enough, let's up the ante by making it haunted by a cult that died at the station! Anthony DiBlasi truly makes sure this is Jessica's Last Shift! MALUM MOVIE REVIEW Writer/Director Anthony DiBlasi has been making horror movies for a while now. One of them is called Last Shift, released in 2014. Well apparently he liked the idea so much, he essentially re-(made/booted) his own film. Which brings us to today's film, Malum. It tells the story of a rookie cop's first… Read More »Screener Squad: Malum
