In fact, Food Drive reports that plant-based food retail sales were worth $7 billion in 2020, showing a 27% growth rate overall for products that specifically replace animal-derived options, according to SPINS data released by the Good Food Institute and the Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA). To explore this societal change to our diets, and the potential impact it might have on our psychology, we spoke with Dr. Uma Naidoo, Faculty Member at Harvard Medical School, an author, a Professional Chef, Culinary Instructor and Nutrition Specialist. We kick off the show by hearing from Dr. Naidoo about how witnessing her grandmother cooking homemade meals using ingredients grown in her back garden influenced her career in psychology and nutrition. We also discuss the philosophy around food, and how our diets reflect different beliefs, and why it is important to respect others' beliefs and dietary choices. Dr. Naidoo explains that as a chef she was taught to respect food, and not demonize it, regardless of your own personal beliefs and choices. She also highlights some impressive companies working in this space such as The Very Good Butchers who refer to themselves as “bean butchers.” Alongside other companies innovating new methods to produce protein sources for plant based meats, such as seaweed and algae via cellular agriculture. Dr. Naidoo also explains the need for more research around the potential psychological benefits that plant based meats can offer. She draws on the example that we know a plant rich diet leaning on lentils, beans, nuts and seeds can be very beneficial to mental health, but suggests it is still too early to assume that plant based meats might have the same effect. Moreover, Dr. Naidoo also states that, even if you consume plant based meats from fast food chains, it is better to make them at home as these chains often use processed vegetable oils that are very inflammatory for the gut and can negatively affect mental health.

In this episode I interview Mitchell Scott, co-founder and CEO of The Very Good Butchers, a Canadian plant-based meat company. After selling out the farmers' markets on Denman Island, British Columbia, Mitchell and his co-founder and fellow ‘bean butcher' James Davison knew they were onto something. They brought their beans to Victoria and opened the Canadian West Coast's first plant-based butchery. The pair are currently opening a new facility that will be able to produce up to $100 million more in product a year which is an increase of more than 2,500%. Last year they became the second plant-based meat company to release an IPO. In this interview Mitchell discusses: • Why they use the terms ‘butcher' and ‘butchery' • How they raised $600k from 240 investors in an equity crowdfunding campaign in 2018 • The unexpected turn of events after they received several offers of a deal on Dragon's Den (Canada) • Why they went public last year and the benefits and challenges it's brought • How to go public and how much it costs • And more Visit The Very Good Butchers website RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook   Twitter  Instagram  Connect with me personally at: Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn

If you don't already know about the Very Good Butchers, you will soon. While not the most dominant plant-based meat company, it's certainly the cleanest. We were shocked (pleasantly so) that we could find every single ingredient listed for the Smokin' Burgers and Very Good Pepperoni in our local grocery store. Co-founder and CEO Mitchell Scott sits down with us to discuss the rising trend of vegan meat, going public, and how The Very Good Butchers make meat out of beans. He also discloses a super simple cooking tip that will take any vegan meat to the next level. Our minds were blown—apparently, we've been cooking veggie burgers the wrong way for years! Plus, we introduce a new rapid-fire Q&A segment.
