Zazie and Kristi talk to dog trainer Emily Priestley about her book Urban Sheepdog and what you need to know about herding breeds. We start by discussing which breeds count as herding breeds and what they were bred to do, and ask Emily how a herding dog first came into her life. Then we talked about the kinds of herding dog behaviours that dog guardians can sometimes struggle with, and the extent to which we consider these normal or pathological. We also talk about the importance of exercise and enrichment, and Emily's main takeaway from the book. Finally, we talk about the books we're reading.Emily Priestley is a multi-certified dog trainer, having graduated from the renowned Academy for Dog Trainers and is a Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant through the IAABC. She has been working with and handling dogs professionally for over a decade.Emily specializes in working with herding breed dogs struggling in pet homes. If you were the CEO of a for profit company and 48% of your sales team had one foot out the door and were scanning the horizon for a better job would you make a correction? Of course you would. And yet, for decades the charitable sector has been tolerating a revolving door of staff with the average tenure for senior level fundraisers just 18 months. That is hardly enough time to figure out how the coffee maker works. Let alone build strong relationships with donors. And yet we seem content to hemorrhage human and financial resources. What if it didn't have to be that way? Today on our podcast we are spotlighting the British Columbia Society for Prevention Cruelty to Animals. Under the leadership of powerhouse fundraiser Shoni Field the BC SPCA is a great example of an organization that prioritizes building a loyal team. Shoni is going to share more about the work of the BC SPCA so I tell you a little bit about her. Shoni is the Chief Development Officer at the BC SPCA and is very proud of her skilled and passionate team of innovators who consistently exceed industry benchmarks. She has been fundraising for 25+ years for a range of causes including environmental, youth, health, and development organizations. Shoni is the founder of the For the Paws Summit for animal welfare fundraisers and when she's not fundraising, she advocates for electoral reform and citizen engagement, plays strategy games and bakes fancy cakes. Shoni is a settler on the unceded traditional territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. In this episode Shoni and I cover a lot of territory. We talk about rethinking performance metrics, what makes a good boss, values-based decision making and creating psychological safety for your team. Remember, if you have more examples of organizations that you think we should shine a spotlight on next season we are actively curating Season Five right now so get in touch Thank you for making this conversation a priority in your day. We are so glad you are part of this community and we would be so grateful if you would rate, review and share this podcast so that we can keep widening the circle. Rodents – mice, rats, squirrels and the like – are found all across Canada. At some point, pretty much every homeowner or building owner will be confronted by two little eyes and a twitchy nose, and need a solution. For a long time, rodenticides – poisons targeting rodents – have been the norm. But the issues relating to welfare of animals and secondary poisoning have prompted many jurisdictions to implement bans on second generation anticoagulant rodenticides and others. British Columbia is considering heavily restricting their use – and an opportunity for citizen engagement on this is available until June 19, 2022. To discuss rodenticides, the proposed regulatory changes, and what alternatives exist, the BC SPCA's Erin Ryan joined Defender Radio. Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

Having a chipmunk come up, sniff your finger cautiously, then nip a treat and run off is magical; I won't lie – it's pretty remarkable. But the consequence of that single moment of joy for a person can lead to devastating impacts to ecosystems, communities and individual animals. Be it for a close-up experience, because of a perception of hunger and need, or even incidental feeding from outdoor pet food or bird feeders, most folks who feed wildlife do so with goodness in their heart. This episode isn't about blaming or shaming – because that simply doesn't work. It's about understanding the complexity of nature and animal behaviour, and the role – often negative – humans end up playing. You only need to look to British Columbia's black bears to see the significant impacts of failing to take down bird feeders or be aware of the impact of unintentional and intentional feeding – hundreds of bears killed every year by conservation authorities. You can identify feeding in a significant number of cases when coyotes inappropriately interact with people. And, even with little chipmunks and squirrels, as I note later in this interview, feeding can end up wreaking havoc in an ecosystem or causing behaviour that the public views as aggressive or bold. To go in-depth on feeding – from causes, to impact to solutions, I reached out to Dr. Sara Dubois, Chief Scientific Officer of the BC SPCA, who is also a professor at University of British Columbia. Dr. Dubois has an impressive background on the subjects of wildlife, ethics, humane treatment of animals in numerous sectors, and, of course, the impact of feeding wildlife. Call to end mink farming due to risk to human health

New in this update:Wild mink also at risk from farmingA Nanaimo veterinarian and several animal scientists are calling on the province to end mink farming in B.C. Dr. Ken Langelier says COVID-19 outbreaks at two farms in the Fraser Valley have shed light on the unnecessary risks posed to human health. Scientists are concerned because the virus can mutate in mink and the mutations could affect vaccine efficacy. Animal welfare specialists say wild mink are also at risk for the virus because of the farms and mink farming itself is cruel. Langelier says the public health risk posed by the mink farms far outweighs any social or economic benefits."And it's a big concern as the virus continues to mutate, that we may all of a sudden have something come up in our own province and do we want to continue to take this chance. And really, this industry that provides fur and false eyelashes and mink oil, we don't need it. It's not really providing what I would say is a valuable function in our society and it should go.”—Dr. Ken Langelier. The letter, to BC's Ministers of Agriculture and Forests and Lands, calls on the province to help BC's 13 mink farms transition to other types of agriculture. It is signed by Langelier, 2 animal welfare scientists and environmentalist David Suzuki. The BC SPCA has also called on the province to end mink farming, but so far, no one from the province has responded to those requests. Immunization program will ensure a second doseThe provincial health officer says a delay in the supply of the Pfizer vaccine means BC will receive only half the doses it expected over the next three weeks. Dr. Bonnie Henry says that's why the immunization program will focus on those who need a second dose. “We have, however, been able to rearrange and look at the process we have to make sure that we are continuing with providing the first of two doses to those at highest risk and that we are able to start second doses at day 35. So it is a bit of a setback but it is only a delay.”—Chief Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.Despite the setback, Henry says residents and staff at every care home in BC will have received their first COVID-19 vaccine by the end of next week.Mountain rescueThree people from Victoria were rescued from a steep section of Mount Arrowsmith on Sunday. The Alberni Rescue Squad Search manager says a helicopter hoist was used to remove the hikers, who were clinging to each other on a ridge. Dave Poulsen told Nanaimo News Now that had “one of the hikers let go, more than one of them would have fallen." One woman is in serious condition in hospital, while another is stable. The male hiker suffered no injuries. Witnesses say the trio left the Judge's Route Trail and were hiking in uncharted territory.

Are you wondering how animal charities are faring in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic? In British Columbia, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SCPA) is trying its best to rethink their strategies and campaigns so that they can continue to be of service despite the challenges. The pandemic is a tough time for charities, who are struggling to reconcile the increased demand of their services with the potential loss of some of their fund sources. Chief Development Officer Shoni Field joins Douglas Nelson on this episode to talk about how the organization is responding to these challenges. A big part of this is building a culture of digital maturity and adopting a lower risk model of operations. Listen and learn more about who BC SCPA used these pivots to thrive in the midst of crisis.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

Cats love to climb, jump, pounce, and play. Unfortunately, they often want to do this outside, where those skills help them kill wildlife and birds in large numbers and are exposed to innumerous risks to their well-being. It’s not fair to tell cats they can’t be who they are, and it isn’t exactly fair to let them be at risk of causing damage or being injured. There is, however, a middle ground: catios. The BC SPCA recently hosted a tour of catios in the Vancouver region with great success and are strong proponents of people giving cats a safe way to live their lives and engage their behaviours fully. Marieke van der Velden , an outreach specialist for the BC SPCA joined Defender Radio to share the secrets of catios and how easily cat lovers can build or buy them for their furry friends. While we all love wildlife and want to co-exist with the animals, sharing our bedrooms and walls with them isn’t exactly ideal; many species can cause significant electrical or structural damage to homes or businesses, putting everyone at risk. Some species do carry diseases that are harmful, particularly in locations like hospitals or restaurants. And, if you’re like me, having a squirrel scrabbling around in the vents causes the dogs to go absolutely insane. Safely and removing wildlife is an important job that should often be left to experts – but who exactly are the experts, and what makes them humane operators are long standing questions. And now, the BC SPCA wants to help answer them. The BC SPCA launched AnimalKind last week, a program that will help residents and business owners find accredited wildlife removal or pest control companies who put humane treatment of animals first. Dr. Sara Dubois, Chief Scientific Officer for the BC SPCA joined Defender Radio to explain the need for AnimalKind, how it was developed, and why it will benefit people, businesses, and the animals. What happens when you put 20 international scientists in a room for two days to talk about human-wildlife conflict resolution? You get the seven principles for ethical wildlife control. The BC SPCA and UBC’s Animal Welfare program (funded by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies) hosted a two-day workshop in 2015, which brought together scientists from around the world to look at these subjects from an international perspective. Out of this workshop came the seven principles for ethical wildlife control. The paper, which was published this month in the journal Conservation Biology under the title International consensus principles for ethical wildlife control, and is publicly available, does not focus on a single ethical standpoint, or biological function to determine effective, ethical control. It is, according to the authors, the first paper that poses several points to create a framework for control and conflict resolution. It can be boiled down to several questions: Can the problem be mitigated by changing human behavior? Are the harms serious enough to warrant wildlife control? Is the desired outcome clear and achievable, and will it be monitored? Does the proposed method carry the least animal welfare cost and to the fewest animals? Have community values been considered alongside scientific, technical, and practical information? Is the control action part of a systematic, long-term management program? Are the decisions warranted by the specifics of the situation rather than negative labels applied to the animals? To discuss why we need a framework for ethical decision making in wildlife conflict, how these principles apply in various circumstances, and what a roll out of these guidelines could look like, Defender Radio was joined by co-author of the paper, and chief scientific officer at the BC SPCA, Dr. Sara Dubois.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

Uncomfortable discussions come up in the world of animal advocacy, just like any other field. But when we have our awkward conversations, there are often lives on the line. This week we’re going to look at two such topics: dogs in hot cars and seal penises. Dogs die every summer from coast-to-coast because they’re left in hot vehicles on warm days. We’ll be joined by Dr. Emilia Gordon of the BC SPCA who will help us understand the physiological changes dogs undergo when left in hot cars, as well as what dog lovers should know about cooling off overheated pups. Then we’ll connect with Sheryl Fink of the International Fund for Animal Welfare to talk seal penises. It’s no prank – and you may have a lot of explaining to do to those around you when they see you switch from laughing to crying and back again following the interview.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

On this week’s episode we’re focusing on two spring-related topics that come up every year – wildlife feeding and living with bears. In almost every wildlife conflict situation we’ve studied, food is a central issue. Whether it’s intentionally feeding ungulates like deer or unintentionally feeding predatory animals like coyotes, the easiest and safest way to live with wildlife is to ensure we’re not feeding them. And Dr. Sara Dubois, the Chief Scientific Officer for the BC SPCA, has a plan – she wants to make wildlife feeding the new littering. Being Bear Smart isn’t always something on our minds – but it certainly is easy to do once you understand the basics. Sylvia Dolson of the Get Bear Smart Society in Whistler, BC, joined Defender Radio to talk spring bears – what they’re up to, how they respond to us and what we can do to prevent conflict.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

We’re continuing our back to school series – focusing this week on the two-legged young who are eager to learn. This week we’re happy to bring you two top humane educators. First up is Zoe Weil, co-founder and president of The Institute for Humane Education, who will share her thoughts on the importance of humane education in homes and classrooms, as well as the best way to get teachers on board with the rapidly growing demand for such lessons. Following Zoe is Paula Neuman, Manager of Humane Education for the BC SPCA, who will talk about the success the west coast organization has had in teaching children – some of whom are today staff at the BC SPCA – what it means to be compassionate. We know that many parents in British Columbia are struggling with keeping their children busy – and entertained – during a prolonged labour dispute between teachers and the province. We’re happy to inform you that our own lesson plans – with content ranging from K to 12 – is available to freely download at FurBEarerDefenders.com. These lessons can serve as a great way to keep your children thinking and learning while awaiting their return to the classroom.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers

For nearly 80 years, The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals has tried to find ways to stop the use of fur and end trapping. While many of our traditional methods – letter-writing, campaigning, advertising and others – have worked well in many areas, our co-existence program has yielded the greatest results. The concept of co-existence stems from understanding the wildlife in an ecosystem and finding steps that can help prevent conflict. This week, we’re hearing from two experts. First up is Adrian Nelson, my colleague at APFA who is also our urban wildlife conflict manager. For the last several years, Adrian has headed up our Living With Wildlife beavers campaign to great success – and he’ll be sharing how the program works and what you can do to get involved. Following Adrian will be Sara Dubois, Chief Scientific Officer at the BC SPCA who will discuss a recent study out of Africa illustrating that not only is co-existence better for the environment and animals, but better for the economy.

We also hear from Sara Dubois of the BC SPCA, who is slated as a speaker at the conference. Sara will explore her new position of Chief Scientific Officer at the BC SPCA and give our audience an idea of what she will be presenting during her time at the conference. APFA is a proud supporter of Animal Advocacy Camp and encourages all our members to attend if they're available. To learn more about the event, visit animaladvocacycamp.ca.
